Maggie Douglas

CHESTER - Mrs. Maggie J. Stroud Douglas, 84, of 207 Peyton St. died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Blackrock Baptist Church, with the Rev. James W. Wilson Sr. officiating and the Revs. Paul Jackson, William Jackson, Ambrose Jackson and W.W. Thompson assisting. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Douglas was a daughter of the late John Stroud and Manda Mobley Stroud. She was educated in the public schools of Chester County, and was a member of the Blackrock Baptist Church, where she sang in the vocal choir. She was a deaconess, a member of the Missionary Society, the AP Society and the Josephus Chapter No. 160 Order of the Eastern Star. She served as chairperson for the church cafeteria for over 20 years. She retired from the Chester County school district as a food service attendant.

She was the widow of Robert Douglas Sr.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Douglas Jr. of Chester and James F. B. Douglas of Columbia; her daughter, Amanda Douglas of the home; her sister, Geneva Wilmore of Union, N.J.; two brothers, B.T. Stroud of Chester and James Ervin Stroud of Buffalo, N.Y.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 207 Peyton St. Eastern Star rites will be 6 tonight at the King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St.

Joe Gross

ROCK HILL - Mr. Joe Gross Jr., 71, of 2243 Ferris St. died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Chapel-Greene Funeral Home and entombment will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Chester, Mr. Gross was the son of the late Joe and Estelle Gross. He was the former owner and operator of Joe's Garage and was a member of Woodhaven Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ethel Gross; four sons, Wayne Gross of Loris, and Mike Gross, Billy Gross and Fred Yannotti, all of Chester; two daughters, Rose Carr of Georgia and Francis Gaston of Chester; his sister, Martha Watts of Chester; his brother, Bobby Gross of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends at Greene Funeral Home 7 to 9 tonight and at other times at home, 2243 Ferris Street.

Memorials may be made to Woodhaven Baptist Church, 2044 Marett Boulevard, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Johnny Haynes

ROCK HILL - Mr. Johnny Ralph Haynes, 63, of 2727 Lesslie Dale Road died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999 at Piedmont Medical Center.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bill Shytle officiating.

A native of St. Louis, Mr. Haynes was a son of the late John C. Haynes and Edith Davenport Haynes.

He started his military career in the Army and retired from the Navy. He served in the military for 23 years. He worked as a transmission specialist in Gastonia, N.C., after his retirement from the military.

Surviving are his wife, Eralean Tilley Haynes; his niece and caregiver, Deborah Burky of the home; two brothers, Ben Haynes of Jakima, Wash. and Leonard Haynes of Louisville, Ky.; and five sisters, Millie Lecocq and Alice Moore, both of Missouri, Jane Hardy of Louisiana, Nellie Kinaman of Iowa, and Violet Andolina of Alaska.

The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Lynn Knopp

FORT MILL - Mrs. Lynn Harris Knopp, 49, of 10143 Southwest Drive died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999 at Mercy Hospital South in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Higher Ground Church, formerly Six Mile Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Walter Harris and Princeton Terry officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

A York County native, Mrs. Knopp was employed with The Villages at Carolina Place Assisted Living in Pineville, N.C. She was a member of Harrison United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Lewis Knopp; her son, Stephen Tilley of Fort Mill; two daughters, Jonica Shackelford of Fort Mill and Emily Gibson of Lancaster; four brothers, Glenn Bridges of Demopolis, Ala., Grady Bridges of Hartsville, the Rev. Walter Harris of Hendersonville, N.C., and Wayne Harris of Fort Mill; two sisters, Betty McClain of Charlotte; and Letsy Bronson of Thomasville, Ala.; and six grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Fort Mill Funeral Home and other times at home.

James Lesslie Jr.

GREER - Mr. James Dixon Lesslie Jr., 88, of 1305 Boiling Springs Road died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Neelys Creek ARP Church with private burial in Neelys Creek ARP Church Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Fleming will officiate. Visitation will follow the funeral.

Born in Rock Hill, Mr. Lesslie was the son of the late James Dixon and Nina Gettys Lesslie and was the widower of Elizabeth Ware Lesslie.

Mr. Lesslie was a retired executive with the Springs Mill Inc. Prior to that, he was an educator as well as an engineer with the city of Rock Hill. He was a graduate of Erskine College and received his engineering degree from the University of North Carolina.

Mr. Lesslie was a member of the Lions Club in Fort Mill, where he was a past president and was awarded citizen of the year by the city of Fort Mill. He also was a member of the Lions Club in Abbeville.

He attended Neelys Creek ARP Church in Rock Hill. He also was a former deacon and elder as well as a Sunday school teacher and had a class named for him at Neelys Creek.

Surviving are his daughter, Ann Reid of Columbus, Ga.; his son, James Lesslie III of Greenville; his brother, Robert Lesslie of Pawleys Island; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Neelys Creek ARP Church, 974 Neelys Creek Road, Rock Hill, SC 27930; Erskine College, Due West, SC 29639; or Bonclarken Assembly, 500 Pine Drive, Flat Rock, NC.

The Mackey Mortuary of Greenville is in charge.

Gene Liverett

CLOVER - Mr. Gene Thomas Liverett, 59, of 1763 N. Hwy. 321 died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999 at home.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Doyle C. Baynard officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of York County, Mr. Liverett was the widower of Jacqueline R. Liverett and was a retired truck driver.

Surviving are his daughter, Doris Clendening of Clover; two stepsons, Jess Rayburn of Bowling Green and Tony Rayburn of Thomasville, N.C.; two brothers, O.D. Liverett of Albemarle, N.C. and Guy Roger Liverett of Thomasville, N.C.; two sisters, Nancy C. Van Degriff of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mary Jo Hancock of Troy, N.C.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at M.L. Ford and Sons.

Mary Beckham

LANCASTER - Miss Mary M. Beckham, 96, of West Barr Street died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Douglas Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Kevin Cooley officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, Miss Beckham was a daughter of the late Halcot Junius Beckham and Mary Lula Gooch Beckham. She was a graduate of Winthrop College. She was a retired elementary school teacher who taught 33 years in the Laurens and Lancaster County schools. She was a member of the National Teachers Association, South Carolina Education Association and the Retired Educators Association. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Key Teachers Society and Waxhaws Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was active with the Springs Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and worked at the front desk. She volunteered with the American Red Cross Blood Bank. She was a lifelong member of Camp Creek United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, served on the Official Board and was a member of the Christian Fellowship Sunday school class.

Surviving are two sisters, Gladys Moffat of Westport, Conn., and Julia Beckham of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Ruth Cochrane

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ruth Von Cannon Cochrane, 79, of 664 Ferndale Drive died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cumbie Funeral Home in Archdale, N.C., with the Rev. David Emery officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Cemetery in Trinity, N.C.

A native of High Point, N.C., Mrs. Cochrane was a daughter of the late Claude A. Von Cannon and Lillie Hamilton Von Cannon. A homemaker, she attended Hayworth Wesleyan Church for many years.

Surviving are her husband, Leonard James Cochrane Sr.; her son, Dr. Leonard J. Cochrane Jr. of Easley; two daughters, Gail Fite of Tega Cay and Gwyn Henke of Martinez, Ga.; her brother, Walter H. Von Cannon of Archdale, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home in Rock Hill and at other times at home.

Lewis Jordan Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Lewis Jordan Jr., 88, of 1573 Crawford Road died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Weeping Mary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Mosley officiating and the Rev. Hattie Foster assisting. The Rev. Dr. J.H. Bailey will give the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Fairfield County, Mr. Jordan was a son of the late Lewis Jordan Sr. and Mattie J. Hall. He was the widower of Ammie Jordan. Mr. Jordan worked as a carpenter, truck driver and cement mason. He was a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church, where he was a trustee and chairman of the cemetery committee. He attended the Fairfield County schools.

Surviving are seven sons, Albert Jordan of Chicago, Jerry L. Lindsay and the Rev. Robert A. Lindsay Sr., both of Rock Hill, James E. Lindsay of Edgemoor, Tommy L. Jordan of Birmingham, Ala., Larry L. Coleman of Winnsboro and Fredrick E. Coleman of Corona Queens, N.Y.; two daughters, Lizzie J. Yelverton of San Mateo, Calif., and Francis L. Thomas of Rock Hill; four sisters, Elizabeth Belton of Brooklyn, N.Y., Katie Belton of Salisbury, N.C., Leola Odom of Rock Hill and Hattie Wallace of Milford, Conn.; 36 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Weeping Mary Baptist Church.

Enid Mangum

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Enid Greene Mangum, 74, of 2581 Mangum Road died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Michael James officiating.

A native of Greer, Mrs. Mangum was a daughter of the late James H. Greene Sr. and Annie Belcher Greene. She was the widow of Arthur L. Mangum. Mrs. Mangum was a retired bookkeeper for Sherer Cleaners in Rock Hill. She was a member of St. John's United Meth-odist Church in Fort Mill and attended Trinity Bible Church in Rock Hill. She was a 1943 graduate of Fort Mill High School.

Surviving are two daughters, Kelly S. Mangum and Cindy Croft, both of Rock Hill; her stepson, Larry Mangum of Rock Hill; her stepdaughter, Catherine Pressley of Rock Hill; her brother, James H. Greene Jr. of Rock Hill; two sisters, Constance Spinks of Rock Hill and Faye Milem of York; three grandchildren; and her special friend, Doris Ferguson of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her brother, James Greene, 2590 Mangum Road, Rock Hill.

Alvin Bankhead

BLACKSTOCK - Mr. Alvin O. Bankhead, 70, of 4647 Mountain Gap Road died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia.

Graveside service with Masonic rites will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. John Rumford officiating.

A native of Fairfield County, Mr. Bankhead was a son of the late William McLin Bankhead and Esther McKeown Bankhead. He was a retired supervisor with J.P. Stevens Co. and owner of Alvin Bankhead Construction Co. He was a graduate of Great Falls High School and attended Berry College in Rome, Ga. He was a member of Great Falls Masonic Lodge No. 277, Hejaz Shrine Temple and the Rossville Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Simpson Bankhead; three daughters, Lynn B. Jackson of Manning, Susan B. Andrews of Lamar and Pixley B. Roberson of Lexington; two brothers, William Bankhead and Karl Bankhead, both of Blackstock; his sister, Elizabeth Cornwell; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Roy Chappelear

LANCASTER - Mr. Roy Dean Chappelear, 57, of 1419 Williams Estate Drive died Monday, Aug. 31, 1999.

The funeral will be noon today at Mahaffey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Curtis Cameron officiating.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Chappelear was a son of the late Raymond Henry Chappelear and Martha Louvinia Carnes Chappelear. He was a painter and an U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his son, Roy Chappelear of Sugar Hill, Ga.; his daughter, Crystal C. Peralero of Lawrenceville, Ga.; his brother, Ray Henry Chappelear of Great Falls; and his sister, Ann Duncan of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon today and at other times at the home of Ann and Don Duncan, 2086 John Everall Road, Lancaster.

Jerry Gainer

LANCASTER - Mr. Jerry Robert Gainer, 68, of 4766 J.B. Denton Road died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jimmy Fore and Michael Lewis officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Gainer was a son of the late John Lee Gainer and Amanda Bailey Gainer. He was retired from Lehigh Steel and was a lifetime member of the Hart Masonic Lodge No. 380. Mr. Gainer was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Horton Gainer; two daughters, Debbie Gainer Caskey of Heath Springs and Ronda Gainer Mahaffey of Lancaster; two brothers, Curtis Gainer and Elliott Gainer, both of Lancaster; his sister, Eunice Snipes of Lancaster; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.
