Ruthie Ashley

YORK - Mrs. Ruthie Lee Easter Ashley, 89, of 5 Turner Ave. died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. J.C. Miller officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Sharon, Mrs. Ashley was a daughter of the late Rufus Easter and Alice Garfield Easter. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Usher Board for 50 years. She was a member of the PWO Circle No. 1, the Hymn Choir, the 5th Sunday Singing Convention and the Interdenominational Ushers Associates Organization. She was a volunteer worker for the senior citizens.

Surviving are her daughter, Ruthie Easter Brown of the home; her brother, Wilson Easter of York; and two sisters, Fleater Meeks of Rock Hill and Mattie Garvin of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today.

James Baker

KERSHAW - Mr. James William Baker, 66, of 3252 Old Georgetown Road died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charlie Young officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Baker was a son of Louise Mosley Baker of Kershaw and the late John Palmer Baker. He was the widower of Katie Pierce Baker. He was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church and was a retired carpenter for Daniels Construction Co.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his son, William D. Baker of Kershaw; two daughters, Ava Mahaffey of Lancaster and Pamela Phillips of Rock Hill; two brothers, Homer C. Baker of Camden and Harold T. Baker of Kershaw; her sister, Johnnie Mae Baker of Kershaw; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after 3 p.m. Friday at the home.

Phoye Funderburk

Lancaster - Mrs. Phoye Miller Funderburk, 83, of New Cut Road died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at the White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Pleasant Dale Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Funderburk was the daughter of the late Bogan Franklin Miller and Mary Faile Miller. Mrs. Miller was the widow of Johnny James Catoe and Halcotte Funderburk. She was a member of the Pleasant Dale Baptist Church and was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are three sons, James Catoe, Jesse Catoe and Hal Funderburk, all of Lancaster; two sisters, Lois McManus and Ruth Melton, both of Lancaster; five grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Pleasant Dale Baptist Church after the service.

Virginia Scruggs

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Virginia Cauthen Scruggs, 69, of 818 Eden Terrace died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Laurelwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. William Pender officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Scruggs was a daughter of the late Irby Bruce Cauthen and Ruth Kimbrell Cauthen. Mrs. Scruggs taught at Ann Barron Child Development Center. She was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she was a choir veteran. She was a member of the Rock Hill Music Club and a former Girl Scout Leader. She was a former member of the York County Choral Society, Euepian and the Tuesday Afternoon Book Club.

Surviving are her husband, James Y. Scruggs Jr.; three daughters, Cecil Fitcher of York, Ginny Hargett of Rock Hill and Ruth Clark of Monroe, N.C.; her brother, Rea K. Cauthen of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Memorials may be made to Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Marion Sims

LANCASTER - Mr. Marion Robert "Big Buck" Sims, 64, of 972 Tenth St. died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Ansel Smith officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Sims was a son of Julie H. Sims of Lancaster and the late Colie Sims. He was retired from Springs Industries and a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church. He was an U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Debbie Barwick Sims; his son, Marion A. "Sheriff" Sims of Lancaster; three daughters, Denise Stevens, Cynthia Susie Sims and Sherry Lisa Sims, all of Lancaster; two stepsons, David W. Barwick and James "Jamie" Barwick, both of Lancaster; four brothers, Leroy Sims, Shot Sims, and David Sims, all of Lancaster, and Wayne Sims of Rockingham, N.C.; his sister, Jessie Mae Terry of Rockingham, N.C.; and 13 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Cynthia Hudson, 1542 Tin Lane, Lancaster.

Ewell Sturgis Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ewell Gilbert Sturgis Sr., 90, of 175 Hillcrest Dr. died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at St. John's United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Tim McClendon officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of York County, Mr. Sturgis was a son of the late Ewell Sturgis and Annie Enloe Sturgis. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and the A.M. Graham Bible Class. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Mr. Sturgis was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Louise C. Sturgis; his son, E.G. "Buddy" Sturgis Jr. of Hopkins; two brothers, Paul Sturgis and Albert Sturgis, both of Rock Hill; his sister, Anna Bell Dodson of Rock Hill; and his grandson.

Memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church.

Mary Talford

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Miss Mary Ann Talford, formerly of Rock Hill, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, in Hemp-stead, N.Y.

The funeral was Thursday at Foundation AME Zion Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Daran Mitchell officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

Miss Talford was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School and a member of Faith Baptist Church in Hempstead.

Surviving are her daughter, Adri-enne Talford of Hempstead; two brothers, Willie Clyde Barber of Queens, N.Y., and Clarence Barber of Charlotte; two sisters, Joretta Cythbertson and Annie Faye Wilson, both of Charlotte; and her granddaughter.

Robinson Funeral Home was in charge.

Doyle Totherow

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Mr. Doyle Totherow, 65, of Harrisburg, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999.

A private memorial service will be 1 p.m. Sunday in York County.

Surviving are his son, John Totherow of Annapolis, Md.; two sisters, Tressie Patterson and Darcas Moore, both of Fort Mill; and five brothers, Elmer Totherow, Leonard Totherow and Ed Totherow, all of Fort Mill, Rathiel Totherow of Van Wyck and Clarence Totherow of Greenville.

Neill Funeral Home in Harrisburg is in charge.

Linda Walker

YORK - Mrs. Linda Lea McCal-lister Walker, 56, of 223 Brown Neal Road died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Interment will be at Lakeview Memory Garden.

A native of West Virginia, Mrs. Walker was a daughter of Myron McCallister of Dunbar, W.Va., and the late Edith Lawson McCallister. She was a homemaker.

Surviving in addition to her father is her husband, Robert Walker; two daughters, Kelly Walker Beam of Indian Trail, N.C., and Bambi Sheppard of Hickory Grove; two brothers, John Peter McCallister of Marion, Ohio, and Myron McCallister of Pennsylvania; six sisters, Judy Harris of Simpsonville, Debbie Droddy of Dunbar, Billie Ann Runyon of Ohio, Cindy Forsythe of East Stroudsburg, Pa., Betty Jo Robinson of Shelby, N.C., and Jane Young of Scott Depot, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.

Crawford White Sr.

PATERSON, N.J. - Mr. Crawford White Sr., formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, in Paterson.

The funeral will be 8 a.m. Saturday Bragg Funeral Home in Paterson.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. White was a son of the late Claude and Mamie White.

Surviving are his wife, Tina White; his son, Crawford White Jr.; four sisters, Janie Miller Thomas, Roberta Gist, Ruth White and Pearlean White, all of Rock Hill; and three brothers, David Brown, James Cloud and Johnson White, all of Rock Hill.

Grace White

ROCK HILL - Grace White, a former Rock Hill school board and planning commission member, died Friday at Ebenezer Nursing Home.

She was 87 years old.

A memorial service will be Monday at First Presbyterian Church.

A native of Greenville, Mrs. White was a daughter of the late Rev. James George Huggin and Olive McKown Huggin. She was the widow of James White Jr.

Mrs. White was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder. She was a retired public school teacher and was a graduate of Winthrop College. Mrs. White served on the Board of Education for the Rock Hill school district, was on the Rock Hill Planning Commission, was a member of the Over the Teacups book club and was a volunteer at Hope House.

Surviving are two sons, James Spratt White IV and George Huggin White, both of Rock Hill; three daughters, Jeanie White Presto of Rock Hill, Lucile White Wood of Charlotte and Sallie White Scheide of Mount Pleasant, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends after 3 p.m. Sunday at the home of John Alan Presto, 639 College Ave.

Memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 111, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Arrangements will be announced by Bass Funeral Home.

Edward Brooks

ROCK HILL - Mr. Edward Lee Brooks, 55, of 20 Paxton St. died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, in Rock Hill.

The graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Forest Hills Cemetery, with the Revs. Bruce Wyatt and Dr. Robert Taylor officiating.

A native of Cherokee County, Mr. Brooks was a son of the late William L. Brooks and Rosie Roland Brooks. Mr. Brooks attended Liberty Baptist Church and worked 30 years for the Tar Heel Container Corp. before joining the South Carolina Highway Department as a trade specialist III.

Surviving are his wife, Darlene Threat Brooks; two sons, William Edward "Ed" Brooks of Fort Mill and Danny Ray Brooks of Rock Hill; his daughter, Renee B. Cloninger of Chester; his brother, Alfred Brooks of Orangeburg; two sisters, Bobbi Bracken of Hendersonville, N.C., and Violet B. Schuler of Brevard, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at home.

Wallace McWaters

BLACKSTOCK - Mr. Wallace "Mac" McWaters, 63, of 2317 Country Side Drive died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Blackstock Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. David Riddle officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Blackstock, Mr. McWaters was a son of the late Sylvester Scott McWaters and Betty McCarley McWaters.

He was retired from George C. Brown Logging in Richburg. He was a member of Blackstock Presbyterian Church and the South Carolina National Guard.

Surviving are his wife, Alma "Amy" Stansberg McWaters; his son, Walt McWaters of Blackstock; and two sisters, Margaret Douglas and Jesse Bagley, both of Blackstock.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Blackstock Presbyterian Church, Cemetery Fund, Blackstock, SC 29014.

Doris Faulkenberry

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Doris Vivian Knight Faulkenberry, 83, of 615 Rocklyn Drive died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at Beverly Health Care.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Gerald Bennett officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Faulkenberry was a daughter of the late Robert Knight and Jincey Rogers Knight.

Mrs. Faulkenberry was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her husband, John J. "Jake" Faulkenberry; her son, Ronald V. Faulkenberry of Rock Hill; her sister, Blondell Dill of Mount Airy, Ga.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the home.
