James Walker Rhodes
May 5, 2003

Funeral services for James Walker Rhodes will be held at Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel, at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2003, with Pastor David A. Tholstrup officiating. Burial with military honors will take place in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church, 900 Dreher Island Road, Chapin, S. C. 29036. Mr. Rhodes resided in Washington , D. C. until he moved to Generations of Chapin in March 2003.
Mr. Rhodes died Monday, May 5, 2003, in Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. He was born on September 19, 1919, in Huntsville, Alabama. He was a son of the late Pearl Stolz Rhodes and James Madison Rhodes. He was a graduate of Greensboro High School, Greensboro, N.C. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Oxon Hill, Maryland, but regularly attended services at the U. S. Soldiers and Airmen's Retirement Home Chapel in Washington . He was a member of the White House Press Photographers Association and other civic and professional organizations.
Mr. Rhodes was retired from the U. S. Air Force and from NBC News, Washington , D. C. During WW II he served in the U.. S. Army and was the recipient of nine bronze battle stars and three purple hearts. In 1947 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a cameraman. After retirement from the Air Force, he was a cameraman for NBC where he covered the United States Senate, the United States House of Representatives and the White House.
Mr. Rhodes is survived by his former wife, Eleanor Frick Rhodes of Chapin, stepdaughter and husband, Melanie and Bob Mangum of Chapin, stepson and wife, Kenneth and Maggie Cope, and two step-granddaughters, Christine and Alexandria Cope, all of Savannah, Ga., one sister, Dolly Rhodes Ryland of Huntsville, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Edward Rhodes, and sisters, Della Rhodes Bobo, Evelyn Rhodes Ryland, and Lois Rhodes Steger.

Elizabeth Ann Fuller Miller
April 27, 2003

Elizabeth Ann Fuller Miller, 92, of 87 Drayton Court, Prosperity, widow of William E. “Bing” Miller, died Sunday, April 27, 2003 at Newberry County Memorial Hosptial.
Mrs. Miller was born on Nov. 22, 1910 in Green Island, NY, a daughter of the late Henry J. and Regina Grobecker Fuller. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Chapin.
Mrs. Miller is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan M. and Louis Lagasse of Prosperity and Betty M. and George Guerin of Esperance, NY; two grandsons and spouses, Stephen and Dianne Lagasse of Chapin and Brian and Margaret Lagasse of Huntsville, AL.; nineteen great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M., Monday at Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 8 P. M.
Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10:00 A. M. Thursday at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Wynantskill, NY. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, NY.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 106 Amick’s Ferry Road, Chapin, SC 29036.

Ann Smith King
April 26, 2003

Ann Smith King, 56, of 12160 SC Highway 121, wife of James R. King, died Saturday, April 26, 2003 at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Mrs. King was born on May 22, 1947 in Newberry, a daughter of Estelle Cromer Smith and the late Jobe E. Smith, Jr. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and worked with the Newberry RSVP Singers.
Mrs. King is survived by her mother of the home, her husband of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce K. and Earl Eargle of Irmo; a son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Claudette R. King of Lexington; four grandchildren, Jessica Eargle and Brittany Eargle, both of Irmo, Ryan King and Cory King, both of Lexington.
Funeral services for Ann Smith King will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Thursday at the Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Lynn Peters. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Springdale Section.
The family will receive friends at the home, 12160 SC Highway 121, Newberry from 6:00 to 8:00 P. M. Wednesday.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 2503 Bethel Church Road, Prosperity, SC 29127.

Louise Lovelace Wicker
April 25, 2003

Louise Lovelace Wicker, 99, of the J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home, widow of Marion K. “Buck” Wicker, died Friday, April 25, 2003.
Mrs. Wicker was born on August 28, 1903 in Prosperity, a daughter of the late B. Oscar and Mami Lester Lovelace. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, the Lucy Epps Sunday School Class and Circle #5.
Mrs. Wicker is survived by nieces and nephews, Marie Nicosia, Joye Senn, and Tommy Fellers, all of Newberry, Mary Louise Fellers of Spartanburg, Fred O. Lovelace and Drucy Siokes, both of Columbia and Steve Lovelace of Orangeburg. She was predeceased by a sister, Mattie Lovelace Fellers and a brother, Dury O. Lovelace.
Funeral for Louise L. Wicker will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Sunday at the Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Van Thomas and Mr. Ray Wicker. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3:00 to 3:45 P. M. Sunday in Henry Hall of Central United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, PO Box 67, Newberry, SC 29108.

Ruth Clary Price
April 22, 2003

Ruth Clary Price, 85, widow of James Steven Price, died Tuesday, April, 22, 2003. Mrs. Price was born on August 9, 1917 in Newberry, a daughter of the late Matthew Wills and Eva Bouknight Clary. Mrs. Price was a Class of 1938 graduate of Newberry College and a member of the Newberry College Singers. She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for over 30 years. She retired from the South Carolina National Bank after 30 years of service.
Mrs. Price is survived by a twin sister, Ruby Clary Glenn of Greenwood; a daughter and son-in-law, Eve Price and Alan Powell of Columbia; a son and daughter-in-law, James Steven Price, Jr. and Shirley Chaples Price of Charleston; grandchildren, Paige White of Atlanta, Lauren Harris of Charlotte, Clary and Grayson Powell of Columbia, and Jeff Mackin of Port Orange, FL; nieces and nephews, Elaine and Joseph Verdol, and Dallas Glenn and families of Atlanta; Owen and Don Clary and families of Columbia, and Betsy Smith and family of Greenville; and great-grandsons Corey White and Caleb Harris. Mrs. Price is survived by the families of her deceased husband. She was predeceased by her brothers, Matthew Wilson Clary, Benjamin Owen Clary and James McVey Clary.
Funeral services for Ruth Clary Price will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Saturday, April 26, 2003, at the First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Harmon. Interment will be in the Rosemont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 P. M. at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church of Newberry, 807 Caldwell Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Charles E. Liebmann, Jr.
April 11, 2003

Charles E. Liebmann, Jr., 76, of 342 SC Highway 121, Prosperity, died Friday, April 11, 2003 at the Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital.
Mr. Liebmann was born on July 24, 1926 in Philadelphia PA, a son of the late Charles E. and Helen Halbgewechs Liebmann. Mr. Liebmann was a Navy veteran of WW II and he was a retired milk salesman with Abbott’s Dairies. He was a member of Wood Wire Metal Lathers/ Carpenters Union, Local 53 and Teamsters Union Local 463
Mr. Liebmann is survived by two daughters, Charleene Liebmann Ryan of Prosperity and Miriam Edith Liebmann of Weldon NC; one son, Charles Edwin Liebmann, III of Lansdowne PA; one sister, Jane M. Wick of Chalfonte PA; and a brother, Theodore Liebmann of Waymart PA.
Funeral services for Charles E. Liebmann, Jr. will be conducted at 1:00 PM Thursday, April 17, 2003 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. Father David Stewart.
The family will be at the residence, 342 SC Highway 391, Prosperity and will receive friends following the funeral service in the social hall of the church. They ask all attending to join them in a meal during the visitation

Thelma Oliver Derrick
April 13, 2003

Thelma Oliver Derrick, of the Lowman Home, White Rock, SC, widow of Charles F. “Preacher” Derrick, died Sunday, April, 13, 22, 2003 at the Lexington Medical Center.
Mrs. Derrick was born on April 4, 1914 in Chapin; she was the daughter of the late W. O’Neal and Brinnie Shealy Oliver. She was a retired employee of Belks, where she worked for 32 years. She was a member of Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church, the Lexington Chapter #176 Order of the Eastern Star, and the AARP.
Mrs. Derrick is survived by a sister-in-law, Mattie L. Oliver of Chester; a niece, Doris J. Oliver of Chester; and two nephews, Homer L. Oliver and Carroll L. Oliver both of Chester. She was predeceased by her brothers, T. Sease Oliver, E. Elbert Oliver, and Harold H. Oliver and a sister, Pearle Swittenburg.
Funeral services for Thelma Oliver Derrick will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Tuesday
at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church by the Rev. Henri Bishop. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 12:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.
