Eldred Wallace

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. - Mr. Eldred S. "Bud" Wallace, 77, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at home.

The funeral was Sept. 14 at Demaine Funeral Homes, Inc. in Alexandria, Va. He was buried with military honors in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., with a Navy chaplain officiating.

A native of Clover, Mr. Wallace was a son of the late Sylvester Porter Wallace and Ellie Maude. He grew up in Fort Mill, was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and graduated from Fort Mill High School in 1938.

He worked for the War Department in Washington in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was called to active duty in 1942. He was stationed at the headquarters of the Office of U.S. Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C., and at the Submarine Chaser Training Center in Miami. He served in the Pacific theater and participated in the U.S. invasions of Okinawa and Palaus Islands. He served on the destroyer U.S.S. Harwood. He worked with the Department of the Army after he was discharged in 1945 and later re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He retired from the Navy Reserve in 1967 and from civilian service in 1979.

He was a member of the American Legion, served as commander in the U.S. Army and Air Force Post 62, assisted with the Soapbox Derby, and was a former adjutant for a VFW Post in Maryland. He was a Life Member of the Patrol Craft Sailors Association and contributed to the Association's Museum.

Surviving are his wife, Jeannie Cason Wallace; three daughters, Sylvia Dodge of Overland Park, Kan., Linda Flick of Fairfax County, Va., and Susan Wallace of Edinburg, Va.; his sister, Carleene Wallace Jennings of Fort Mill; six grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

Les Pickering of Demaine Funeral Homes, Inc. was in charge.

Lucetta Arntz

YORK - Mrs. Lucetta Moss Shirley Arntz, 94, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at the Belaire Health Care Center in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, with the Rev. Donald Lowery officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

A native of York, Mrs. Arntz was a daughter of the late James L. and Janie Ford Moss. She graduated from Winthrop University and taught at Gastonia High School. Mrs. Arntz was the widow of Fred D. Shirley and later the widow of Lyle A. Arntz.

Mrs. Arntz and her first husband, Fred D. Shirley of Gastonia, owned and published the Yorkville Enquirer from 1942 until 1960. After Mr. Shirley died, she returned to teaching in Rock Hill until she retired.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. W.R. McCausland of Rock Hill and Mrs. J. Irvin Biggs of Lumberton, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at York Funeral Home.

Tyther Blake

KERSHAW - Mrs. Tyther Blanche Shaw Blake, 78, of 6586 Highway 341 died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at the Kershaw County Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Eubanks officiating. Burial will be in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Blake was a daughter of the late William Ariel and Viola Williams Shaw. She was a switchboard operator for the Kershaw County Medical Center.

Surviving are her daughter, Frances Moreland of Kershaw; four grandchildren, Lee Moreland and Karen Moreland, both of Kershaw and Ashley Gosa and Erin Gosa, both of Spartanburg; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 tonight at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel and at other times at the home of Jimmy and Frances Moreland, 6596 Highway 341 in Kershaw.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 305 West Church St., Kershaw, SC 29067 or to the charity of one's choice.

Raymond Goolsby

REIDSVILLE, N. C. - Mr. Raymond Watkins Goolsby, 81, of 1119 Rosemont Drive died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at the home of his son in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Reidsville, with the Rev. David Wyant officiating. Burial will be at Greenview Cemetery.

A native of the Oregon Hill Community, Mr. Goolsby was the son of the late Raymond and Callie Watkins Goolsby. Retired from Duke Power with more than 40 years of service, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Arender Goolsby of the home; his son, Ronnie C. Goolsby of Rock Hill; and two grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Citty Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1520 S. Scales St., Reidsville, NC 27320.

Elizabeth Harkey

LEXINGTON - Mrs. Elizabeth M. Harkey, 86, formerly of Rock Hill, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Shandon United Methodist Church, with Dr. Michael L. Guffee Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens.

A native of Rion, Mrs. Harkey was a daughter of the late Sara and Furman McEachern. She was the chief nurse for the American Red Cross Blood Collection program and was a member of the Shandon United Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Captain John Chappell Chapter of Colonial Dames of XVII Century.

Surviving are her daughter, Bevan C. Weyburn of Lexington; two sons, Harry D. Harkey III of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Philip H. Harkey of Charleston; two brothers, Clarence L. McEachern of Columbia and Theodore B. McEachern of Nashville, Tenn.; her granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home in Lexington.

Lila Long

CHESTER - Mrs. Lila Mae Holley Long, 74, of 816 Andrew Long Drive died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Gethsemane Baptist Church, with the Rev. C.D. Pratt officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Blackstock, Mrs. Long was a daughter of the late Russell Holley and Anna Gladney Holley. She was the widow of Hollowed Long Sr.

She was retired from the Chester County school system, where she taught for 30 years. She was a graduate of Coulter Academy in Cheraw and Benedict College of Columbia, where she received her bachelor's degree. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess and an usher. She was a member of the Missionary Circle, the order of Eastern Star and the AP Society.

Surviving are two sons, Hollowed Long Jr. of Chester and Randolph Long of Columbia; her daughter, Mary Ann Daniels; two brothers, Isaac Davis and Joseph Davis, both of Baltimore; two sisters, Mary Ellen Pulley and Joe Eller Thornton of Baltimore; and seven grandchildren.

Denton Funeral Home in Chester is in charge.

Gracie Lowery

LANCASTER - Mrs. Gracie Jane Boone Lowery, 90, of 1408 East Grace Ave. died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Nunn officiating. Burial will be at the Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Lowery is a daughter of the late Zed and Louvenia Dixon Boone. Mrs. Lowery was the widow of Riley Lee Lowery.

Surviving are two sons, Clyde Lowery and Louie Lowery, both of Lancaster; her daughter, Sadie Carnes of Lancaster; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Harry and Ann Cauthen, 1774 Dry Wood Circle in Lancaster.

Billy Stegall Sr.

FORT MILL - Mr. Billy Franklin Stegall Sr., 61, died Friday, September 24, 1999, at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Sisk Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gene Flack officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

A native of Greensboro, N.C., Mr. Stegall was a son of the late Woodrow Stegall and Mattie Stegall Davenport. A graduate of Fort Mill High School, he was the owner of the Fort Mill Business Center and was co-owner of the Colonial Marble Company in Pineville, N.C. He was a member of Sisk Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Billy "Chuck" Stegall Jr. and Jody Stegall, both of Fort Mill; his brother, Teddy W. Stegall of Fort Mill; two sisters, Anita Gibson of Chesapeake, Va., and Patsy Kantowski of Virginia Beach, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

Masonic rites will be 6 p.m. today at Wolfe Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 tonight and at other times at the home of Ted Stegall, 642 South Sutton Road, Fort Mill.

Kathleen Steen

FORT MILL - Mrs. Kathleen King Steen, 60, of 10590 Tillman Steen Road died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Westerly Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Roger Brown and Terry Bevill officiating. Burial will follow at the Indian Land Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mrs. Steen was a daughter of the late Olie and Annie Gordon King. She was retired from Springs Industries' Preparation Department and was a member of the Westerly Hills Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Carson Steen; two sons, Ricky Steen and Robby Steen, both of Fort Mill; two brothers, Rayford Kind of Cowpens and Carl King of Pageland; four sisters, Mary Jackson and Virginia Jordan, both of Pageland, Gladys Goodman of Kannapolis, N.C., and Lucy Boan of Beallsville, Ohio; and two grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Amber Williams

ROCK HILL - Miss Amber Denise Williams, 21, of 1249 Berryhill Court died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at West End Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Lowery officiating. Burial will be held after a 4 p.m. committal service at Westview Cemetery in Honea Path.

A native of Rock Hill, Miss Williams was of the Baptist faith and attended Northwestern High School.

Surviving are her father Tommy Williams of Fort Mill; her mother, Vicki Williams of the home; her sister, Amy Williams of Fort Mill; her stepsister Carmen Williams of Fort Mill; her friend and caregiver, Ken Bruce, of the home; her paternal grandmother, Jean D. Williams of Great Falls; her maternal grandmother Helen E. Cook of Honea Path; and her nephews, Branden Williams and Dustin Williams of the home.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Doris Belue

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Doris Spencer Belue, 76, of 1330 India Hook Road died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Westminster Towers.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Drs. Shelton Sanford and Bill Fox officiating. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn West Cemetery in Charlotte.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Belue was a daughter of the late Claude Spencer and Alma Ussery Spencer. She was the widow of Howard "Skinny" Belue. A homemaker, she was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Belue Martin of Charlotte; three brothers, Charles E. Spencer of Rock Hill, R. Frank Spencer of Greenville and Ralph E. Spencer of Chattanooga, Tenn.; her sister, Elizabeth Spencer Stroupe of Mount Holly, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight at Westminster Towers Community Room.

Lillian Blanks

EDGEMOOR - Mrs. Lillian Allen Blanks, 96, 4214 Edgeland Road died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Lando Baptist Church, with the Rev. Richard Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Lando Cemetery.

A native of Catawba, Mrs. Blanks was a daughter of the late James Hamilton Allen and Annie Ferguson Allen. She was the widow of Arthur P. "A.P." Blanks. She was retired from Manetta Mills in Lando with 49 years of service. She was a member of Lando Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Wilbert "Bert" Blanks of Edgemoor and Marion Wallace Blanks of Rock Hill; two daughters, Peggy B. Curtis of Rock Hill and Margaret Stella Booth of Myrtle Beach; her sister, Isabelle Stroud of Shelby, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Lula Cauthen

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Lula Belk Cauthen, 81, of 515 S. Confederate Ave. died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dexter Lambert officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Monroe, N.C., Mrs. Cauthen was a daughter of the late Stafford Belk and Ida McManus Belk. She was the widow of Boyd B. Cauthen. Mrs. Cauthen worked at U.S. 21 Truck Stop, Grandma's Homestyle Cooking, S S Depot and Varsity Restaurant.

Surviving are two daughters, Teresa Saloney of New Orleans and Martha Snipes of Rock Hill; three brothers, Bob Belk of Sumter, J.D. Belk of Conway and Stafford Belk Jr. of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home.
