Rose Sclafani Iacono, 86, of 306 Mallard Drive, Chapin, widow of Michael Iacono, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at her residence.
Mrs. Iacono was born on March 10, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY, a daughter of the late Vincent and Anna Sclafani. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and the Chapin AARP.
Mrs. Iacono is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Linda Iacono of Chapin and David and Arlene Iacono of Westminister, MD; four grandchildren, Jennifer Iacono Meyer, Laura Iacono, Stacey Iacono, and Jeanine Iacono; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Meyer, Ashley and Brittney Iacono.
Funeral Mass for Rose Sclafani Iacono will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church by the Father Andrew Vollkommer. Interment will be in Cathederl Cemetery in Scranton, PA.
Rosary will be recited at 5:30 P. M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P. M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.

Sadie Lester Crooks

Sadie Lester Crooks, 91, of White Oak Manor, Newberry, widow of Tom P. Crooks, died Monday, April 7, 2003.
Mrs. Crooks was born on May 21, 1911 in Prosperity, a daughter of the late William Marcus and Hattie Belle Connelly Lester. She was a graduate of Appalachian State College and did post graduate studies at Winthrop College and Columbia College.
Mrs. Crooks taught public school in South Carolina and North Carolina and retired from Newberry College as assistant of Student Affairs. She was honored by the Newberry College Student Government Association naming an award in her honor, the “Sadie Crooks Award,” which is given to an Administrator each Awards Day. She was a life member of the Newberry College Women’s Club.
Mrs. Crooks was an active member of Central United Methodist Church, a life member of the Garden Club of South Carolina, the Jasper Chapter of the DAR, the Kenelm Winslow Chapter of the Colonial Dames, XVII Century and the Calvin Crozier Chapter of the UDC. She was a member and past-president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 24, past president of the Newberry Business and Professional Women Club. She served on the Community Hall Commission since 1952, and served on the Clemson Extension Homemakers Council.
Mrs. Crooks is survived by five nephews, Arthur L. Shealy of Jacksonville, FL, William M. Lester of Valdosta, GA, James L. Lester of Augusta, GA, Marcus H. Lester of Prosperity, and Rev. B. Marion Crooks of Greenville; a niece, Jackie C. Mount of Pomaria. She was predeceased by three sisters, Hattie Belle Lester, Bonnie L. Shealy and Violet Lester; two brothers, William M. Lester and Marcus H. Lester.
Funeral services for Sadie Lester Crooks will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Van Thomas and the Rev. B. Marion Crooks. Interment will be in Graham Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45 A. M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

William L. Timmons

William L. Timmons, 63, of 146 Grants Acres Way, Prosperity, died Saturday, April 5, 2003 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Timmons was born on July 23, 1940, a son of the late Julius E. and Nettie Edwards Timmons.
Mr. Timmons is survived by his wife, Debra Ann H. Timmons of the home ; a daughter, Angela Pitts of Chapin; two sisters and four brothers.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday in the Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Terry Amick.

Edward Fulmer

Thomas Edward Fulmer, 55, of 414 Circle Drive, Prosperity, died Sunday, April 06, 2003 at his residence.
Mr. Fulmer was born on November 19, 1946 in Lexington County, a son of Inis McCormick Fulmer and the late Morgan Fulmer. He was retired from Cromer’s P-Nuts and was a 22 years veteran of the SC National Guard, Saluda Unit. He was a member of Wightman United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his mother of Ridge Spring, his wife, Carol Jean Garner Fulmer of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Tonya J. and Mike Rodgers of Prosperity; two sons, Thomas Edward Fulmer, Jr. of Monroe, NC and Travis Scott Fulmer of Dallas, TX; a step-son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Susan Chapman of Newberry; four sisters, Virginia Robertson of Saluda, Elizabeth Sox of Chapin, Vernell Collins of West Columbia, and Katherine Berry of Monetta; two brothers, Kenneth Wayne Fulmer of Ridge Spring and James David Fulmer of Leesville; four grandchildren, Dylan Fulmer and Jessica Chapman, both of Newberry, Alicyn Rodgers and Garrett Rodgers, both of Prosperity. He was predeceased by a brother, Broadus Fulmer.
Ed was always willing to lend to anyone a helping hand. He was a gentle man with a kind heart, a true friend, one you could always depend on. To Ed, family was something to cherish. In this belief he was steadfast and always there whether there be good times or bad. We have not lost this man we loved so much for whenever there is sunshine, we will see his smile and as surely as the rain will fall, so will follow the rainbow and Ed watching over us from a far.
Funeral services for Thomas Edward Fulmer will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Tuesday at Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Eddie Taylor. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence, 414 Circle Drive, Prosperity.

Albert Pike Jones
April 5, 2003
Albert Pike Jones, 79, of 288 Belfast Road, Newberry, died Saturday, April 05, 2003, at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Jones was born on January 23, 1924 in Charleston WV, a son of the late Dr. James Leslie and Marie Griffin Jones. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Jones served in the United States Army from 1941 until 1966, retiring as SFC. His first assignment was with the 83rd Horsedrawn Artillery at Ft. Jackson, SC. He later served with the 881st Field Artillery in Austria, Germany, Korea and Ft. Devens, MA. While in Germany, he participated in the crossing of the Elbe River with the 69th Infantry Division, Linking the United State’s and Russian troops during the final days of WW II in 1945. By invitation, he returned in 1996 and participated in the laying of the wreath at the Elbe.
In After serving two years as an advisor in the National Guard in Newberry, SFC Jones went to Seoul, Korea where he was bestowed the honor of directing his men to fire the 50 Gun Salute in tribute to slain President John F. Kennedy in 1963. He retired in 1966 at Ft. Devens and returned to make Newberry his home.
He received the American Defense Medal, American Theater Medal, Good Conduct Medal with five Bronze Loops, Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, WW II Victory Medal and numerous commendations.
Mr. Jones attended Christ School, Arden NC. He was a member of Ft. Jackson Masonic Lodge #374,the American Legion Post #24, Newberry, and the 69th Infantry Division Assn.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife. Mary Ida “Mit” Turner Jones of the home; step-daughter, Candice R. Jones and husband, Albert L. Johnson, Jr. and their son, Trey “Pike’s Boy” Johnson of Manning; two nephews, William G. Jones of North Dakota and James L. Jones of Ohio; and devoted mother-in-law, Virginia G. Turner of Greenwood. He was predeceased by his first wife, Charlotte Schadtle Jones and their only child, Thomas Pike Jones.
Graveside funeral services with full Military Honors for Albert Pike Jones will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday in Spann Cemetery, Ward, SC by the Rev. Van B. Thomas, Jr.
No formal visitation is scheduled but viewing is available at the funeral home.

Minnie Edith "Edibo" Bouknight

Minnie Edith Bouknight, affectionately know as “Edibo”, formerly of 1612 ½ First St., Newberry, died Friday, April 4, 2003 at the J.F. Hawkins Nursing home.
Ms Bouknight was born on May 26, 1909 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Henry C. and Minnie Ellen Goree Bouknight.
She was a retired employee of Kendall Co., Oakland Plant. She was a devoted and loyal member of Lewis United Methodist Church.
Ms. Bouknight is survived by nieces, nephews, and devoted friends. She was predeceased by her brothers, Dewitt, Hugh “Buck”, and Justice “Jab” Bouknight.
Funeral services for Minnie Edit “Edibo’ Bouknight will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday at Lewis United Methodist Church by the Rev. Daniel Bradley and the Rev. Walter Green. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Lewis United Methodist Church, 1105 First St., Newberry SC 29108.
Active pallbearers will be nephews.
