James Baker

LANCASTER - Mr. James Monroe Baker, 92, of 1315 Riverside Drive died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. James D. Spencer III officiating. Burial will be at the Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mr. Baker was a son of the late Joel Baker and Mary Handcock Baker. He was the widower of Leila Adams Baker. He was a retired Springs Industries employee and was a member of Second Baptist Church.

Surviving are his son, Vernon Ray Baker of Gastonia, N.C.; three daughters, Faye Broome and Dorothy Wallace, both of Lancaster, and Barbara Jordan of Hickory, N.C.; two sisters, Avy Jordan of Lancaster and Annie Mae Smith of Newton, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

The body was taken to the home Thursday and will be taken to the church at 3 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church, 1426 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Mahaffey Funeral Home is in charge.

Derry Becker

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Derry Roach Becker, 65, of 2861 Starnes Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Eastside Baptist Church.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Becker was a daughter of Annie Beckham of Rock Hill and the late Harry Roach. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are three daughters, Sheri Bivins of Chester, Donna Becker and Karen Beckler, both of Rock Hill; four sisters, Billie B. Childers of Avon, N.C., Nancy Beckham and Cathy Pittman, both of Fort Mill, and Mary Vahle of Rock Hill; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260 or to the American Diabetes Foundation, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Columbia, SC 29204.

Johnny Dunham

BALTIMORE - Mr. Johnny "Tommytot" Dunham, 77, formerly of Rock Hill, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999.

The funeral will be Tuesday at Friendship Baptist Church in Baltimore.

Mr. Dunham was a son of the late Marshall Mackey and Mattie Dun-ham. He was the widower of Ester Burns Dunham. Mr. Dunham was employed at Bethlehem Steel for

43 years and served as a corporal in the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathryn Chandler and Veronica Beard of Baltimore; his brother, James "Billy" Mackey of Catawba; his sister, Thelma Reeves of Washington; his stepmother, Rosa L. Mackey of Catawba; six grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Virginia Campbell

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Virginia "Bobbie" Campbell of Charlotte died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Northeast Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeremiah Robinson officiating. Burial will be at Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Campbell was a daughter of Maggie Lewis and the late Collie Feemster. She was the widow of John "J.P" Campbell. She was educated in the schools of Chester and Gaston counties. She was a graduate of ABIE Center and served as a crossing guard for Tryon Hills School.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters, Lillie Glasper and Jean Johnson, both of Charlotte; three sons, Leon Campbell, Ameen Bey and Melvin Campbell, all of Charlotte; her sister, Debra Ridley of Flint, Mich.; her brother, Rudy Crank of Flint; her grandmother, Thelma Hopkins of Flint; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 tonight at King's Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Charles Beckman

YORK - Mr. Charles J. Beckman, 67, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be private.

A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., he was a son of the late Myrtle "Kay" Thoren Beckman Williams and Reuben L. Beckman. He attended Bradley University and served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was retired from the office-products division of IBM, where he was branch manager of the Midtown Manhattan office in New York and was branch manager of the Charlotte office. He left IBM for a year was president of Kings College in Charlotte. He returned to IBM as a copier specialist and later was a member of the customer executive education staff and gave seminars throughout the United States.

Mr. Beckman was past president of the Charlotte Sales and Marketing Executives and twice past president of the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Alpine Lodge No. 208, the Oasis Temple of the Shrine in Charlotte.

A musician since he was 15 years old, he was a founding member of the Queen City Stompers, a Dixieland band.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane Robertson Beckman; his son, Charles "Jay" Beckman of Knoxville, Tenn.; his daughter, Laurie Jameison of Mount Pleasant; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Volunteer Fire Department, 5600 Highway 557, Lake Wylie, SC 29710; Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730; or River Hill Emergency Squad, 4 Heritage Drive, Lake Wylie, SC 29710.

Larry Pelletier

ROCK HILL - Mr. Larry A. Pelletier, 59, of 1444 Museum Road died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at India Hook United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William F. Heustess officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Charlotte, Mr. Pelletier was a son of the late Garnett Allen Pelletier Sr. and Katherine Sims Pelletier. He was a 1958 graduate of Rock Hill High School. He was a member of India Hook United Methodist Church, where he was chairperson of the financial committee and head usher. Mr. Pelletier was a member of York No. 385 Masonic Lodge, the Corinthian Chapter of the Eastern Star of South Carolina and Hejaz Shrine Temple in Greenville. He was a former printer at Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. with 22 years of service. He was employed with MECO Inc. in Rock Hill. He was an avid fisherman and boatsman.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lavender Pelletier; two stepsons, Sam Horton of Orlando, Fla., and Keith Horton of York; two daughters, Julie Pelletier of Charlotte and Lisa Hudspeth of Fort Mill; his brother, G.A. Pelletier Jr. of Rock Hill; two sisters, Jean Robert of Rock Hill and Mary Ann Kirby of Simpsonville; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and after the burial.

Reola Knox

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Reola White "Pug" Knox of 470 Byers St. died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Tanglewood Healthcare Center in Ridgeway.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Nazareth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John T. McCoy officiating and the Revs. Mary Crosby and Rosa Evans assisting. The Rev. J. H. Bailey will give the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Fairfield County, Mrs. Knox was a daughter of the late James Otis White and Irene Whitlock. Mrs. Knox was a retired domestic worker.

She was a member of Nazareth Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Hymn Choir No. 1 and the AP Society. She attended the public schools of Fairfield County.

Surviving are her husband, Fred Knox; four daughters, Barbara White, Patricia White, Beverly White and Monica White, all of Rock Hill; her son, Jeff White of Rock Hill; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at the home and the home of her son, Jeff White, 645 E. Heckle Blvd., Rock Hill.

Mason Mitchell

ROCK HILL - Mr. Mason Hope Mitchell, 89, of 3149 Mount Holly Road died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 5 p.m. today at Mount Holly United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Rouse officiating.

A native of Hickory Grove, he was a son of the late William Samuel Hampton Mitchell and Lillian McCullough Mitchell.

Mr. Mitchell was retired from Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co. after 42 years in the packing department. He was a member of Mount Holly United Methodist Church for more than 80 years and served as Sunday school treasurer for 20 years. He was a gardener and an U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jordan Mitchell; his son, Allen Mitchell of Rock Hill; his daughter, Terry Ellis of Buford, Ga.; his brother, Walter L. Mitchell of Rock Hill; his sister, Lillian Mitchell Hamilton of Rock Hill; six grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends in the parlor at Mount Holly United Methodist after the service.

LAKE WYLIE - Mrs. Mary Tyler Brooks, 94, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Charlotte.

The funeral will be in New Jersey.

A native of Lawrence, Kan., Mrs. Brooks was a daughter of the late Harry Tyler and Grace Judy Tyler. She was the widow of H. Mather Brooks. They were former residents of New Jersey.

Surviving are her daughter, Marilyn B. Mack of Lake Wylie; and three grandchildren.

Elijah Byrd

McCONNELLS - Mr. Elijah "Tom" Byrd, 65, of 1425 Orr Road died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Great Joy Baptist Church, with the Rev. Walter B. White officiating and the Rev. George H. Lowry assisting.

A native of Winnsboro, Mr. Byrd was a son of the late Ollie Byrd and Irene Robinson Byrd. He was a retired self-employed well driller and mechanic for B&B Well Drilling. He was a member of Great Joy Baptist Church.

Surviving are his companion, Mildred Gordon; two sons, Rosham Gordon of Hollywood, Md., and Anthony Byrd of Charlotte; two daughters, Stephanie Byrd of Rock Hill and Brenda Morgan of McConnells; three brothers, David Byrd of McConnells and Roosevelt Byrd and Nathaniel Byrd, both of Charlotte; six sisters, Alytha Byrd, Isabell Byrd and Leona Byrd Burkins, all of McConnells, Liddeon Earlean Mayfield of Rock Hill, Lillie Mae Reid of Chester and Ollie Mae O'Rear of Charlotte; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

Gertrude Mayhew

YORK - Mrs. Gertrude Braid Mayhew, 73, of 6009 Polly Circle died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Bratton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Littlejohn officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

A native of Denver, Mrs. Mayhew was a daughter of the late James C. Braid and Irene Smith Braid. She was the widow of Julis Mark Mayhew. She was a retired florist and worked at Western Florist in Reno, Nev. She was a member of Four Square Baptist Church in Sparks, Nev.

Surviving are two sons, Colin Braid Jolly of Reno and Scott D. Jolly of Carson City, Nev.; three daughters, Cadance Allen of York, Penelope McMutt of Santa Ana, Calif., and Kim Harrington of Rock Hill; her brother, James Braid of Denver; her sister, Cherry Ann Braid of Montana; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Willie Peterson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Willie Louise Strait Peterson, 63, of 4 Cauthen St. died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Clarence Queen officiating.

A native of Great Falls, Mrs. Peterson was a daughter of the late Samuel Orr and Mary McWaters Orr. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, David Strait and Donald Strait, both of Rock Hill; four daughters, Elizabeth Craig, Evelyn Edge, Betty Grubb and Sandra Roddey, all of Rock Hill; her brother, Samuel E. McWaters Sr. of York; her sister, Lily Mae Kitchen of Columbia; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home.
