John Williford

ROCK HILL - Mr. John M. "J.M." Williford, 84, of Williford Road died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Holly United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Rouse officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Williford was a son of the late Carrie Lee Williford and Bennie Isom Williford. He was the widower of Antoinete McFadden Williford. He was a veteran of World War II and served five years in Europe. He was a member of Mount Holly United Methodist Church, where he held various leadership positions. He retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co., where he was a foreman in the printing department. He was a member of the York Cattlemen's Association, where he was honored as an outstanding member.

Surviving are his daughter, Johnnie Bailey of Greenwood; his sister, Willie May Johnston of Charlotte; and his granddaughter.

The family will receive friends in the family life center at Mount Holly United Methodist Church after the service.

Memorials may be made to Mount Holly United Methodist Church, 1996 Mount Holly Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Laura Archie Easter

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Laura Archie Easter, 67, of 309 Lyle St., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at her home.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. today in Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Paul Blake officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Easter was the daughter of the late John and Annie Mae Shaver Archie. She was the widow of Franklin David Easter. She was a homemaker and was a member of Christian Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Jackie Easter of North Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Brenda Raines of Charlotte and Bobbie Sue Walden of the home; two brothers, Arthur Archie and Jimmy Archie, both of Rock Hill; three sisters, Mary Demby of Edgemoor, and Ethel Faile and Betty Carpenter, both of Rock Hill; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 South Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Samuel Valentine

SHARON - Mr. Samuel Nathan "Sam" Valentine Jr., 61, of Route 1, S.C. 49, died Friday, October 1, 1999, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Bullocks Creek Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Gene Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Valentine was a son of the late Samuel Valentine Sr. and Nellie Valentine. He was of the Presbyterian faith and was employed with J.W.K. Insulating Co. He also was the former owner of the Bullocks Creek Horseshoe Club.

Surviving are three daughters, Linda Ann Cowan of Daytona Beach, Fla., Lee Valentine of York and Nell Powell of Kannapolis, N.C.; three sons, Gene Valentine of Salisbury, N.C., Sammy Valentine of Bullocks Creek and Jerry Valentine of Sharon; four sisters, Mary Sue Helms and Margie Wallace, both of Rock Hill, Wilma Wix of Union and Trula Gibson of Bullocks Creek; and eight grandchildren.

The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. today.

Holcombe Funeral Home is in charge.

Benny Bolin

CLOVER -"Mr. Benny F. Bolin, 58, of 102 Pinewood Drive died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Stanford officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

A native of York County, Mr. Bolin is a son of the late George Nelson Bolin and Blanche Ruth Little. He served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife Peggy C. Bolin; his son, Brian Nelson Bolin of Clover; two brothers, Bobby Bolin of Easley and "Billy" Joe Bolin of Bozeman, Mont.; and his sister, Peggy Moore of Blacksburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford Sons Funeral Home in Clover.

Tony Land

CHARLOTTE -"Mr. Tony K. Land, 38, formerly of Chester County, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999.

The funeral will be at noon today at King's Funeral Home in Charlotte. Burial will be at Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens.

Surviving are his parents, Thomas "Kojak" Land and Louise Brice Land; his sister, Anita Steel; two brothers, Donald Land and Robin Land; his grandmother, Robena Brice.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral service at King's Funeral Home.

William Lowery

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -"Mr. William Leroy "Sam" Lowery, 74, of Hot Springs, Ark., formerly of Rock Hill, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Center Fork Baptist Church in Hot Springs, with the Revs. Lynn Baxter, Loyd Roper and Allen Brown officiating. The graveside service, with full military honors, will be at 1:30 p.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Park near Alexander, Ark.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Lowery served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He received the Purple Heart after being shot down behind enemy lines in Korea. After retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant from the Air Force in 1969, he served in civil service at the Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Lowery; two daughters, Debbie Fox of DeWitt, Ark. and Mary Staton of Carlisle, Ark.; two sons, Mark Lowery of Little Rock, Ark. and Chris Lowery of Hot Springs; his brother, Buddy Lowery of Rock Hill; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Griffin, Leggett Healey Roth Funeral Home in Little Rock.

Memorials may be made to Center Fork Missionary Church, Ohio Mission Fund, 1101 South Moore, Hot Springs, AR 71913.

Louise Robinson

ROCK HILL -"Mrs. Louise Robinson, 67, of 163 McFadden St., died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pineville AME Zion Church, with Dr. Eugene Goodwin officiating and the Rev. W.O. Thompson assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Robinson was a daughter of the late Alice Haggins Mitchell. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Robinson was educated in the York County public schools and was a member of the Pineville AME Zion's Missionary Life Members Society, the Stewardess Board, Usher Board and sang in the choir.

Mrs. Robinson was the widow of Ellie Robinson.

Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Sims of the home; 12 sisters, Willie Mae Byrd and Christine Young, both of York, Elowise Byers and Pauline Gundy, both of Trenton, N.J., Johnny Hefner, Maggie Curry and Iva Lee Miller, all of Rock Hill, Lizzie Wilson of California, Alice Thomas, Pennia Thomason, Sally Jamerson and Mary Jackson, all of Gastonia, N.C., nine brothers, Jimmy Mitchell and Andrew Mitchell, both of Rock Hill, Earnest Mitchell, Carl Mitchell and Bill Haggins, all of York; Frank Haggins of Trenton, N.J., John Thompson of Gastonia, N.C., Frank Thompson of Clover and Lewis Thompson of Lake Wylie; and her grandson.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Parker Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

James Wilks

CHESTER - Mr. James Johnson Jules Wilks, 97, formerly of Chester, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, in Baltimore.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Christopher King's Funeral Home memorial chapel at 703 Old York Road, with the Rev. E.E. Vance officiating and Rev. Charles Pratt assisting.

Burial will be at Wilks Family Cemetery on Old York Road in Chester.

Mr. Wilks was the son of the late Mary Ward Wilks and Peter Young Wilks of Chester.

A native of Chester, Mr. Wilks received an education in the Chester County public school system. He settled in Baltimore during the late 1930s and retired from Bethelhem Steel Corp. after 34 years of service.

He also was a successful entrepreneur who started and operated various small businesses.

Mr. Wilks was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Baltimore.

Surviving are four daughters, Patricia Bryce-Sheely and Johanna Wilks, both of Baltimore, and Alicia Wilks and Juanita Morris, both of Chester; four sons, William H. Gray, William Brown and Abraham Wilks, all of Baltimore, and James J. Wilks Jr. of Chester; two brothers, Rev. Kluttz Wilks of Chicago and Albert Hall of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Agnes Smith of Glenburnie, Md., and Ella J. Logue and Mary Wilks Glenn, both of Baltimore; his devoted niece who cared for him, Carrie Clark of Chester; his devoted nephew William G. Wilks of Baltimore; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

The body be viewed from 4 to 9 tonight at Christopher King's Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the home of Carrie Clark, 1136 Sylvia Hicklin Drive, Chester.

John Ameen

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Mr. John Ulysse Ameen, 74, of 113 Hyacinth Lane died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Great Falls, with the Rev. Clarence Fouse officiating.

A native of Winnsboro, Mr. Ameen was a son of the late John Ameen and Maggie Sanders Ameen. He graduated from Great Falls High School and the University of South Carolina. He was a retired pharmacist with Caldwell Drug Store in Gastonia, N.C., after 40 years of service. He worked with Matthews Drug Store in Great Falls before moving to Gastonia. He served in the Navy in World War II and was a member of the Great Falls Masonic Lodge No. 277.

Surviving are his wife, Bobbie M. Ameen; his son, John Robert Ameen of Sweetwater, Tenn.; his daughter, Jane Ellen Gettshalk of Charleston; two brothers, Saied Ameen of Camden and William R. Ameen of Great Falls; three sisters, Mary Monsen of Skokie, Ill., Helen Cleaver of Houston and Margaret Cooper of Columbia; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home in Great Falls.

Verdie Faile

LANCASTER - Mrs. Verdie Bell Gainey Faile, 82, of 3892 Sentry Road, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Jim Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mrs. Faile was the daughter of the late Jesse Gainey and Henrietta Gainey. She retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Second Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Catherine Horne and Helen Usher, both of Lancaster; four brothers, J.T. Gainey of Lancaster, and Joseph Gainey, Charles Gainey and Wylie Gainey, all of Jefferson; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his step-grandson.

Allene Hunter

LANCASTER - Mrs. Allene Robinson Hunter, 92, of 3550 Flat Creek Road, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Hyde Park Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bill Parker and Joey Burnette officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Hunter was a daughter of the late John Alexander Robinson and Ida Baker Robinson.

She was the widow of Spofford Hunter. Mrs. Hunter was a retired from Springs Industries and was a charter member of Hyde Park Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Lois Hunter Hinson of Lancaster; her sister, Ruth Roddey of Lancaster; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hyde Park Baptist Church organ fund, 1898 Flat Creek Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Emmett Hall

FORT MILL - Mr. Emmett Allison Hall, 81, of 120 Summersby St. died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Mercy South Hospital in Pineville, N.C.

A graveside service with military honors will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Unity Cemetery, with the Rev. David Kemp officiating.

A native of Akron, Ohio, Mr. Hall was retired from Celanese Corp. He was the widower of Janis Halstead Hall. Mr. Hall was a member of American Legion Post No. 43 and a life member of Catawba Masonic Lodge No. 56. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Marine Air Corps. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his son, Mark Hall of Fort Mill; his daughter, Terrie H. Haire of Fort Hill; his brother, Perry Hall of Narrows, Va.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at his home and at other times at the home of his daughter, Terrie H. Haire, 1940 Haire Road.

Memorials may be made to Fort Mill Church of God building fund, 221 Academy St., Fort Mill, SC 29715.

Virginia Neely

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Virginia S. Neely, 90, of 2722 Reservation Road, died Monday, October 4, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Friendship United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Neely's Creek ARP Church cemetery.

A native of Catawba, Mrs. Neely was a daughter of the late William Hall and Carrie Williams Spencer. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where she was involved in the AMITY Club and Mary Martha Circle. She also was a member of the Friendship Hobby Club.

Mrs. Neely was a graduate of Winthrop University and taught at Roddey School. She additionally worked at the Plant Peddler for several years.

She was the widow of Roy Neely.

Surviving are her son, Roy Stevenson Neely of Rock Hill; her daughter, Jerry Williams of Rock Hill; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Greene Funeral Home from 7 to 9 tonight and at other times at the home.
