David Brown

CENTRAL - Mr. David Lee Brown, 85, of 109 Mickey Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Anderson Memorial Hospital in Anderson.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mahaffey Funeral Home in Lancaster, with the Revs. Ray Koterba and Tallmadge Bass officiating. Interment will be at Westside Cemetery in Lancaster.

A native of Spartanburg, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Berry Brown and Omie Roberts Brown. He was the widower of Geneva Quinn Brown.

Surviving are his wife, Mamie Brown of Gastonia, N.C.; his daughter, Linda C. Miller of Central; three sisters, Ruth Waldrop and Mae Largent, both of York, and Ann Bratanick of Cleveland; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Hugh Campbell

CHESTER - Mr. Hugh Lamar Campbell, 65, of 1516 A.A. Campbell Drive died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Chris Snelgrove officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Gaston County, N.C., Mr. Campbell was a son of the late Allen A. Campbell and Bessie Lytton Campbell. Mr. Allen was retired from Cone Mill in Carlisle. A graduate of Chester High School, Mr. Campbell was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Loreda Yarborough Campbell; his daughter, Nancy Lunsford of Chester; four brothers, Boyce Campbell and Ronnie Campbell, both of Chester, Jack Campbell of Gastonia, N.C., and Harold Campbell of Greenville; three sisters, Jewell Lathan and Barbara Strait, both of Chester, and Corrine Russell of Bessemer City, N.C.; his stepmother, Julia Campbell of Chester; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Lorna Hinson

HICKORY GROVE - Miss Lorna L. Hinson, 74, of 2740 Irene Bridge Highway died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Phillips officiating. Burial will be at the Hickory Grove Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Miss Hinson was a daughter of the late Carl W. Hinson and Jewell Hinson. She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught 40 years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers of South Carolina Association. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where she taught the John Wesley Bible Class and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are her brother, Tracy W. Hinson of Clifton, Colo.; two nieces; and her nephew.

Memorials may be made to Hickory Grove Life Saving Squad, 6009 Wylie Ave., Hickory Grove, SC 29717 or to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church building fund, P.O. Box 158, Hickory Grove, SC 29717.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 today at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Bratton Funeral Home is in charge.

Juan Arias

LANCASTER - Mr. Juan Francisco Arias, 45, of 1741 South Highway 200, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in Mitford.

The funeral will be in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Mr. Arias was employed with Tucker Lumber Co.

Surviving are five children, Cristina Gomes, Clenda Arias, Hosman Alexander Arias, Glordis Yolanda and Elsi Maribel Arias; three brothers, Luis Betlram Arias, Marselimo Arias and Foustino Arias; three sisters, Elsa Arias, Reina Arias and Erlindo Arias; and his special friend, Vanessa Buchanan.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Christine Karvelas

SUMTER - Mrs. Christine S. Karvelas, 75, of Mattison Avenue died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, with the Rev. Aris Metrakos officiating and the Rev. Mark Riggs assisting. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Karvelas was a daughter of the late James Stathopoulos and Alexandra Stathopoulos. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Columbia.

Surviving are her son, John Karvelas of Roebuck; two daughters, Alexandra Karvelas of Conway and Aphrodite Konduros of Taylors; her brother, Pete Stathopoulos of Rock Hill; and her sister, Petsa Stathopoulos of Triangle, Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bullock Funeral Home and at other times at the home. A traditional Orthodox Rites service will be 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Marie Davis

POLKVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Marie Dinkins Davis, 71, of 2727 Hollis Road died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

The funeral was Monday at Polkville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alton Martin officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late John Henry Dinkins and Arlie Sims Dinkins. She was retired from Springs Industries in Fort Mill after 25 years of service. Also a homemaker, she was a member of the Polkville Baptist Church and Polkville Baptist Women.

She was the widow of Robert London Davis.

Surviving are two sons, Bob Davis and Ronnie Davis, both of Shelby, N.C.; her daughter, Becky Eller of Newland, N.C.; her brother, Jimmy Dinkins of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Nellie Coates and Ruby Trues-dale, both of Lancaster; and five grandchildren.

Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston, N.C., was in charge.

Ben Kirkland

LANCASTER - Mr. Ben Milton Kirkland, 74, of 2076 Old Sullivan Road, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at his home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Grady Ghent officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Ehrhardt, Mr. Kirkland was the son of the late John Kirkland and Gladys Kirkland. He retired after 30 years of service in the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Kirkland was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, the American Legion and served in the Air Force in World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Ghent Kirkland of the home; his son, John B. Kirkland of Lancaster; his daughter, Brenda Wood of Lancaster; his sister, Olga Hunter of Lancaster; three grandchildren and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

Porter Graves

ROCK HILL - Mr. Porter Lee Graves, 66, of 927 Jefferson Ave. died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Hogg officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Graves was a son of Ethyle Porter Graves and the late Sam Graves. Mr. Graves was a member of First Baptist Church. He worked in the packing department of Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co. for 47 years.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his daughter, Cynthia Lynn Henson of Dallas; his sister, Patricia G. Rains of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at at the home of his sister, 3880 Winter Road, Rock Hill.

Charles Young

CHESTER - Mr. Charles H. Young, 61, of 2912 Cassels Road in the Wilksburg community died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wilksburg Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Hoyle Vinson officiating.

A native of the Wilksburg community, Mr. Young was a son of the late Samuel J. Young and Bertha Gaston Young. Mr. Young was a 1956 graduate of Chester High School and was retired from Lockhart Power Co. He was a member of Wilksburg Baptist Church.

Surviving are two brothers, Doc Young of Lockhart and Robert Young of Wilksburg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Holcombe Funeral Home in Union.

Memorials may be made to West Chester Baptist Church, 1898 Pinckney Road, Rock Hill. SC 29706.

James Allen Jr.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. James Andrew Allen Jr., 38, of Charlotte died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Flint Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Clover, with the Rev. Dr. Chuck Baynard officiating.

A native of Charlotte, Mr. Allen was a son of Nancy Bailey Dickson of York and James A. Allen Sr. of Charlotte. He was employed by Thomasville Furniture Co.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sons, Jimmy Allen and Robbie Allen, both of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two brothers, Bobby Allen and Donald Allen, both of Charlotte; three sisters, Dallas Warren, Brenda Roscoe and Elizabeth Allen, all of Charlotte; and his grandfather, Robert L. Bailey of York.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at McEwen Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Kathaniel Atkinson

EASTOVER - Mrs. Kathaniel Welsh Atkinson of 138 Mendenhall Road, formerly of Jamaica, N.Y., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Chester. Burial will be at the Welsh family cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Atkinson was a daughter of the late William Welsh and Elmira Walker Welsh.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathaniel Simpson of Eastover; two sisters, Callie Washington of Eastover and Elveria Moore of Jamaica, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 3 to 9 p.m. today at J.P. Holley Funeral Home, Garners Ferry Road in Columbia.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Thursday.

Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester, is in charge of local arrangements.

Della Bradley

YORK - Mrs. Della Mamie Childers Bradley, 79, of 907 E. Liberty St., Apt. 2B, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Baptist Church, with the Rev. John P. Smith officiating and the Rev. James Barnes assisting. Burial will be at Hickory Grove Church of God in Hickory Grove.

A native of York County, Mrs. Bradley was a daughter of the late Ed Childers and Cleo Dover Childers. She was the widow of Jasper "Jack" Bradley. Mrs. Bradley was retired from Oxford Manufacturing Co. She was a member of the Hickory Grove Church of God.

Surviving are two daughters, Joann B. Childers of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and Mamie B. Harris of Sharon; her sister, Martha Bradley of Sharon; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

R. Earl Crocker

CHARLOTTE - Mr. R. Earl Crocker, 73, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the Hankins Whittington Dilworth Chapel, with the Rev. Jon DeBell officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill.

A native of Glendale, S.C., Mr. Crocker was the son of the late Loyce Farrell Crocker and Carrie Walker Crocker. He graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1943.

Mr. Crocker served in the U.S. Navy during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He owned Earl Crocker and Son Painting Contract-ors. He was a member of East Baptist Church and the Excelsior Masonic Lodge. He was also an avid ham radio operator.

Survivors include his wife Catherine Chambers Crocker; his son, Tim Crocker; two brothers, Dean Crocker of Rock Hill and Charles Crocker of Asheville; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to East Baptist Church, 6850 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.

Gilmer Gillespie

FORT MILL - Mr. Gilmer Neely Gillespie, 73, of 106 Kidd Road died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Glenrock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gene Flack officiating. Burial will be at Union ARP Church cemetery in Richburg.

Mr. Gillespie was retired from Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Henson Gillespie; three daughters, Brenda G. Ferguson of Rock Hill and Judy Williams and Kathy G. Welch, both of Fort Mill; two sons, Fred Gillespie and Danny Gillespie, both of Fort Mill; two brothers, Frazier Gillespie and Dave Gillespie, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Pearl Jackson of Rock Hill and Mary Jones of Great Falls; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Fort Mill Funeral Home.
