Michael Helms

ROCK HILL -"Mr. Michael Anthony "Mike" Helms, 37, of 618 Jennings Road died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in McBee.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill chapel, with the Revs. Bruce Wyatt and Robert Cannon officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Helms was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the National Rifle Association. He worked as a drywall contractor.

Surviving are his wife, Pamela Bonner Helms; two daughters, Rachael Marie Helms and April Michelle Helms, both of the home; his parents, Milton J. and Shirley M. Helms of Rock Hill; his brother, Steve Helms of Rock Hill; two sisters, Tammy H. Marcrom and Michelle H. Tiner, both of Rock Hill; and his maternal grandmother, Willene Helms of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill chapel and at other times at the home.

Virginia Neely

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Virginia S. Neely, 90, of 2722 Reservation Road, died Monday, October 4, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Friendship United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Taylor officiating. Burial will be at Neely's Creek ARP Church cemetery.

A native of Catawba, Mrs. Neely was a daughter of the late William Hall and Carrie Williams Spencer. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where she was involved in the AMITY Club and Mary Martha Circle. She also was a member of the Friendship Hobby Club.

Mrs. Neely was a graduate of Winthrop University and taught at Roddey School. She also worked at the Plant Peddler for several years.

She was the widow of Roy Neely.

Surviving are her son, Roy Stevenson Neely of Rock Hill; her daughter, Jerry Neely Williams of Rock Hill; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at the Friendship United Methodist Church.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Genevieve Soles

FORT LAWN - Mrs. Genevieve Jackson Soles, 76, of 5658 Thrailkill Road died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Shield of Faith Church, with the Rev. Curtis Wells officiating. Burial will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Oakdale Baptist Church in Loris.

A native of Horry County, Mrs. Soles was a daughter of the late Ivey Jackson and Sina Belle Bellamy Jackson. She was the widow of Elder M. Soles. Mrs. Soles was retired from Hoechst-Celanese Corp. with 30 years service. She was a member of Shield of Faith Church.

Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Larry Dale Soles of Rock Hill and Charles Wayne Soles of Charlotte; her daughter, Wanda S. Leonhardt of Fort Lawn; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Shield of Faith Church and at other times at home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lancaster, 800 W. Meeting St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Hazzard Williams

LANCASTER -"Mr. Hazzard Gulva Williams, 84, of 1567 Grace Ave. died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at White Springs Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bobby Henderson and Layman James Williams officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Andrews, Mr. Williams was a son of the late Mr. Willie Hazard Williams and Mrs. Rosa Ackerman Williams. He was the retired owner of Williams Service Station and a member of the White Springs Baptist Church. He also served in World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lee Smith Williams; two sons, Alan Williams and Dale Williams, both of Lancaster; three daughters, Mary Ann Hudson and Darlene Shirley, both of Lancaster, and Terri Redish of Conway; his brother, Joe Williams of Great Falls; two sisters, Lettie Mae Clark and Emily Brazzell, both of Lancaster; and 11 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home in Lancaster.

Vickie Barnhardt

CHARLOTTE - Ms. Vickie Lynn Barnhardt, 34, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Mercy South Hospital.

A memorial service was Monday at McEwen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Horace L. Willoughby officiating. Burial, which will be held at a later date, will be private.

A native of Charlotte, Ms. Barnhardt was a homemaker. She was a daughter of Jean Annette Barnhardt of Concord, N.C., and the late Victor R. Barnhardt.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her daughter, Victoria "Toree" Nicole Barnhardt of Concord; her special friend, Roger Dixon of Charlotte; her maternal grandmother, Daisy Canipe of Hickory, N.C.; seven sisters, Vivian Whitmire of Harrisburg, N.C., Cynthia Alexander of Monroe, N.C., Carolyn Thomas of Clover, Linda Moore of Charlotte, Sue Rodriquez of Concord and Sassey Hegler and Angela Rogers, both of York; and two brothers, Jonathan Edminsten of New Orleans and Ronnie Edminsten of Cherokee, N.C.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1229 Greenwood Cliff, Suite 109, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Vera Hunter

HEATH SPRINGS - Mrs. Vera Neal Hunter, 73, of 2220 New Hope Road died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. Grady Ghent officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Hunter was a daughter of the late Ira Boyd Neal and Dora Elizabeth Bailey. She was a homemaker and member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, William L. Hunter Sr.; two sons, William L. "Bill" Hunter Jr. and Joe D. Hunter, both of Columbia; two daughters, Elizabeth Taylor of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Judy A. Hunter of Lancaster; her sister, Catherine Neal of Heath Springs; three grandchildren; and her great-grandson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Isabell Hall

ROCK HILL -"Mrs. Isabell Biggers Hall of 405 Summit St. died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Beverly Health Care in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. W.B. White officiating. Burial will be at Crossroads Baptist Church.

A native of York County, Mrs. Hall was a daughter of the late Susie Adams Biggers and Frank Biggers. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Usher Board and the Bible study group. She attended York County schools.

Mrs. Hall was the widow of Joe Hall.

Surviving are her son, Ricky Hall of Edgemoor; her sister, Alice James of Charlotte; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Ricky Hall at 1856 Johnny Circle in Edgemoor.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Robinson Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

B. Stewart Haas

B. Stewart Haas, a retired associate professor of mass communication at Winthrop University and veteran Iowa editor, died Wednesday at a Charleston hospital after a short illness. He was 68.

Before joining the Winthrop faculty in 1990, Haas was editor of The Courier in Waterloo, Iowa.

He spent 28 years at that newspaper and had won numerous awards for his work there. He retired from the Winthrop faculty in December and moved to Seabrook Island with his wife, Sally Willson Haas, former development director for the Museum of York County.

He had spent this past summer on the editorial staff of the International Herald Tribune in Paris. In 1997, he was selected for an American Press Institute fellowship at The Seattle Times. He also had conducted journalism workshops for the U.S. Information Agency in Botswana and Zimbabwe, Africa.

Dr. William Click, chairman of Winthrop's Department of Mass Communication, praised Haas for his support in helping build the department. "He was a thorough professional and much of what he did helped the department as a whole," Click said. "He had a good relationship with his students and was always pleased to see them succeed in the field."

Haas was a graduate of Kansas State University and held a master's degree from the University of Iowa.

Haas twice had spent summers as a writing coach for members of the S.C. Press Association, of which he remained an active member.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by two daughters, Tamara Marotta of New York City and Robyn Delafield of Seattle; his sister, Betty Joy Malich of Mill Valley, Calif.; four step-children, Rebecca Taylor of Austin, Texas, Peter Stevenson of Chicago, Elisabeth Reynoldson of Osceola, Iowa, and Sarah Smith of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and at 4 p.m. Oct. 15 at Johnson Hall on the Winthrop campus. A burial service will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Stewart Haas Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Department of Mass Communication, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC 29733.

Raymond Holmes

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Raymond Holmes of Great Falls died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church in Great Falls, with the Rev. Z.B. Wells officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Holmes was a member of Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church, where he served as chairman of the Trustee Board, was a member of the Usher Board, the Senior Choir and was the church van driver. He was a member of Columbia-Camden District Usher Board. He was president of the Lay Council and president of the Pearidge Community Club. He was a member of the armed forces.

Surviving are his wife, Diane Dover Holmes; two sons, Jeff Holmes and Ray Holmes, both of Great Falls; four brothers, James Lee Homes and Dan Holmes, both of Great Falls, Walker Holmes of Ridgeway and John Holmes of Rock Hill; four sisters, Lottie Cloud of Fort Lawn, Betty Redford of Chicago, Doris Homes of Rock Hill and Sallie Caldwell of Great Falls; and four grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of Diane Holmes, 861 Pearidge Road in Great Falls.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 5:30 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 York Road, Chester, and from 7 to 9 tonight at Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church.

Marion Mahaffey

LANCASTER - Mr. Marion Shannon "Buck Ellis" Mahaffey, 59, of 187 W. Shiloh Unity Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marty Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kershaw County, Mr. Mahaffey was the son of Effie Mae Melton Mahaffey Ellis and the late John Thomas Mahaffey.

Mr. Mahaffey was a retired roofer and attended New Life Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his son, Marion Shannon Mahaffey III of Kershaw; four daughters, Debbie Mahaffey, Tammy Eargle and Shannon Mahaffey, all of Lancaster, and Leslie Mahaffey of Brazoria, Texas; two brothers, Charles Ellis and Larry Ellis, both of Lancaster; and 11 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hartley Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his sister-in-law, Rhonda Ellis, 177 W. Shiloh Unity Road, Lancaster.

Christine Simmons

MONROE, Va. - Mrs. Christine Goodwin Simmons, 72, of 277 Monroe St. died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with the Rev. Ron Litten officiating. Burial will be at Briarwood Gardens.

A native of Covington, Va., Mrs. Simmons was a daughter of the late Emmett O. Goodwin Sr. and Selina Long Goodwin Hubbard.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Franklin Simmons; four sons, Robert F. "Bobby" Simmons Jr. of Sharon; Walter C. Simmons of Monroe, Sgt. First Class Michael S. Simmons of Van Buren, Ark., and James A. Simmons of Amherst, Va.; three daughters, Sheila J. Dowdy of Richmond, Va., Katherine S. "Kathy" Tomlinson of Evington, Va., and Patricia "Tricia" Tomlin of Amherst; two sisters, Mariam G. Anshutz of Covington, Va., and Janet G. Belt of Richmond; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Whitten Funeral Home.

Evelyn Snipes

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Evelyn Potts Snipes, 71, of 907 E. White St. died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Inman officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Union County, Mrs. Snipes was a daughter of the late John Potts and Virgie Wiggins Potts. She was the widow of Charles F. Snipes Jr. Mrs. Snipes was a member of Catawba United Methodist Church. She worked at Highland Park and the Arcade Mills as a weaver.

Surviving are three sons, Robert "Neil" Snipes of North Charleston, Larry E. Snipes Sr. of Rock Hill and Wesley E. Snipes of Catawba; two daughters, Diane S. Kitchen of Rock Hill and Charlene S. Miller of Gastonia, N.C.; three half-brothers, Noah Potts, Alton Potts and Michael Potts, all of Rock Hill; three sisters, Martha Clark, Peggy Faile and Sarah Canty, all of Rock Hill; three half-sisters, Grace Dixon of Rock Hill, Naomi Kaidby of Charlotte and Melinda Bowers of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Louise Wade

CHESTER - Mrs. Louise Wade, 87, of 1004 Columbia Road died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Donald Scoggins and David Levister officiating. Burial will be at Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church in Union County.

A native of Union, Mrs. Wade was a daughter of the late T.C. Wade and Letha Bailey Wade. She was formerly employed at Springs Industries. She was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her son, Thomas Wade of Chester; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.
