Gilbert Culp

CHESTER - Mr. Gilbert Thornwell Culp, 82, of 1157 Thornwell Drive died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Uriel Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Fort Mill, Mr. Culp was a son of the late Thornwell H. Culp and Ocey Hood Culp. He was retired from Springs Industries. He was a member of Uriel Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon. He attended Fort Mill schools.

Surviving are his wife, Mary "Polly" Dawkins Culp; two sons, Edward T. Culp and James E. Culp, both of Chester; two sisters, Louise Jones of Apopka, Fla., and Elizabeth Bass of Fort Mill; two grandchildren; and his great-grandson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Uriel Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund or Uriel Presbyterian Church, 1578 Stringfellow Road, Chester, SC 29706.

Robert Harris

ROCK HILL - The Rev. Robert Harris, 74, of 375 Marshall St. died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Cross Road Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.E. Boulware officiating. The Rev. Marian A. Crawford will give the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

The Rev. Harris formerly worked in the maintenance department at Sears. He was a member of Faith Temple Church of God. He was a veteran of World War II. He attended the York County public schools and Friendship Junior College. He graduated from Teamer's School of Religion with a bachelor's degree in theology and Faith Temple School of Religion with a bachelor of divinity degree. He had a radio ministry on WRHI for 13 years.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Chisolm Harris; five sons, Robert Harris Jr. and John Harris, both of Rock Hill, Donnie Harris and Kenny Harris, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Bobby Ray Harris of Washington; his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Harris of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three stepsons, Marvin Harris of San Jose, Calif., and Miller Stevenson and Jerry Stevenson, both of Rock Hill; his stepdaughter, Paula Harris of New York; his brother, Albert Harris of Newark, N.J.; three sisters, Maggie Harris and Juanita Burns, both of Rock Hill and Connie Young of Washington; 32 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Parker Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today.

Judy Hembree

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Judy Elizabeth Alford Hembree, 49, of 3097 Longmeadow Road died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Frank Jordan officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Hembree was a daughter of Lorenzo Burt Alford and Margie Lee McCall Alford of Rock Hill. She was a hairdresser at Hairlines and had won state titles in hair styling twice. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Gary Wayne Hembree; three sons, Mike Hembree of Charlotte, Gary Hembree Jr. of Rock Hill and Dylan Hembree of Fort Mill; her daughter, Sandi Davis of Rock Hill; two brothers, Kirby Newell and Michael Alford, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Phyllis Simpson and Barbara Hawkins, both of Rock Hill; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Curtis Outen

ROCK HILL - Mr. Curtis Walter Outen, 86, of 2248 Linwood St. died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the C.M. Tucker Nursing Center in Columbia.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Broughton officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Westville, Mr. Outen was a son of the late John Outen and Roxie Outen. He was the widower of Ethel Rider Outen. Mr. Outen retired from J.P. Stevens Co. after 30 years of employment.

Surviving are his daughter, Jan Hutchison of York; his brother, Fred Outen of Rock Hill; his sister, Kate Snipes of Rock Hill; and his grandson.

The family will be at the home of Dave and Jan Hutchison, 6689 Pine Forest Drive, York.

Louise Sullivan

LANCASTER - Mrs. Louise Killough Sullivan, 77, of 440-A Colonial Ave. died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tony Adams officiating. Entombment will be at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.

A native of Pageland, Mrs. Sullivan was a daughter of the late Lewis Johnson Killough and Eula Arant Killough. She was the widow of Adrian Sullivan. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a retired sales clerk for Belk department store. She was a volunteer for Springs Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was an active member of Duke Power Retirees and was retiree of the year in 1996. She was a volunteer for the Clinton Elementary School.

Surviving are three daughters, Marla Ackerman, Sharon Buchanan and Adrienna Witherspoon, all of Lancaster; two brothers, Lewis Killough of Charlotte and John Colin Killough of Heath Springs; two sisters, Eutah Blackmon of Kershaw and Jessie Simon of Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Ray and Marla Ackerman, 1150 Canterbury Drive, Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1664 Flat Creek Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Rosell Cornwell

CHESTER - Ms. Rosell Cornwell, 52, of Buffalo, N.Y., formerly of Chester, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Eric County Medical Center in Buffalo.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lincolnville Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Owens officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Ms. Cornwell was a daughter of the late Fulton Cornwell and Lizzie Cornwell.

Ms. Cornwell was a member of Lincolnville Baptist Church and attended Unity Baptist Church in Buffalo. She attended Finley High School in Chester County.

Surviving are her brother, James Cornwell of Charlotte; and her sister, Alice Mae Blakely of Buffalo.

The family will receive friends at the home of Johnny and Naomi Anderson, 527 Lincolnville Road, Chester.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Denton Funeral Home is in charge.

Charlotte Davis

CLAYTON, N.Y. - Mrs. Charlotte Davis, 59, of 305 Jane St. died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Cleveland Funeral Home in Watertown, N.Y. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Adams Center, N.Y.

A native of Watertown, Mrs. Davis was a daughter of Kenneth Slate and Margaret Garvin Slate. A graduate of Antwerp High School, she worked as a waitress at various restaurants.

Surviving are her son, Jeffrey Davis of Columbia; two daughters, Kim Bailey of Rock Hill and Vicki Louder of Charlotte; two brothers, Richard Slate of Calcium, N.Y., and William Slate of Clay, N.Y.; two sisters, Mary Farrell of Evans Mills, N.Y., and Rosemary Farrell of Black River, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James Ghent

LANCASTER - Mr. James Eric "Jimmy" Ghent, 59, of 2284 N. Rocky River Road died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at New Cut Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Wayne Dickson officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Kannapolis, N.C., Mr. Ghent was a son of the late James Ervin "J.E." Ghent and Jessie Henrietta Cauthen Ghent. He was an electronic technician for Lancaster Telephone Co., a graduate of Southeastern Institute of Electronics in Atlanta, an Elder of New Cut Presbyterian Church and assistant Sunday school superintendent.

He was a former youth Sunday school teacher and the young adult class treasurer, past master of Camp Creek Masonic Lodge No. 317, a member of Telephone Pioneers and past president of the Buford Swim Club.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Parker Ghent; three daughters, Annette Melton and Angela Ghent, both of Lancaster, and Jamie Sims of Lilburn, Ga.; his sister, Joyce Ghent Bowers of Lancaster; and two grandsons.

Memorials may be made to New Cut Presbyterian Church, Playground Fund, 2617 New Cut Church Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Leonard Hudson

LANCASTER - Mr. Leonard S. "Bud" Hudson Jr., 67, of 2473 Morningside Drive died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Revs. Buford Hayes and Nic Natalie officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mr. Hudson was a son of the late Leonard S. Hudson Sr. and Callie McMurray Hudson. He retired as a superintendent of spinning and carding from Springs Industries and a manager of the Lancaster Moose Lodge. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Marian Small "Majie" Hudson; his son, Scott Hudson of Lancaster; two daughters, Donna Ingram and Lisa Bonkowski, both of Lancaster; two sisters, Mary Alice Pettit and Edna Mae McAteer, both of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Thomas Landers

BESSEMER CITY, N.C. - Mr. Thomas Lindsey Landers, 79, of 303 Weaver Dairy Road died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Kings Mountain Hospital.

A memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at Greene Funeral Service Westside Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Chambers officiating. Burial will be at Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Abbeville, Mr. Landers was a son of the late Lindsey Thomas Landers and Dora Williams Landers. He was the widower of Della Pressley Landers.

Surviving are two sons, Hubert Landers and Earl Landers, both of Bessemer City; three daughters, Carolyn Benfield of York, and Thelma Cavender and Edith Lingerfeldt, both of Bessemer City; his brother, Neal Landers of Etawah, N.C.; his sister, Mamie Lance of Easley; 16 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Greene Funeral Service Westside Chapel and other times at the home of Earl and Vivian Landers, 712 East Iowa Ave., Bessemer City.

Martha Lewis

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Martha Gregory Boor Lewis, 76, of 216 Marion St. died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Sollis Hicks officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.

Born in Edgefield, Mrs. Lewis was a daughter of the late Harry Howard Gregory and Blanche Frey Gregory. Mrs. Lewis had a degree in early childhood education from Winthrop University. She also attended Wesleyan College and graduated from Anderson Junior College. Mrs. Lewis served in the Women's Army Corps in World War II. She cared for both physically disabled and homeless children. She was the children's craft lady for Media Play in Charlotte and cared for neighborhood children. She was affectionately known as "Biggie." She was the widow of Ira Lewis.

Surviving are nine children, Stanley N. Boor of Tempe, Ariz., Pete Nichols, Tony Lewis and Steve Lewis, all of Warner Robins, Ga., Renee Winters of Dahlonega, Ga., Leisa Rogers of Baxley, Ga., Michele Gaudin and Rhonda Boor, both of Rock Hill, and Tanya Boor Parker of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two brothers, Harry Howard Gregory Jr. of Dunwoody, Ga., and Jacob F. Gregory of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Pollyanna Smith of Florence, Flora Comins of Gainesville, Fla., and Rebecca Futrell of Gilbert; 32 foster children; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers and gifts to the Martha G. Lewis Memorial Fund, c/o First Union Bank, 113 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 2970 to benefit and aid in the support of her physically disabled daughter.

Virginia Lewis

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Virginia Pendleton Lewis, 78, of Shallotte, N.C., formerly of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at McEwen Charlotte Chapel, with the Rev. Wendell Sloan officiating. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.

A native of Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Lewis was a daughter of the late Melvin Carl Pendleton and Maxie Pendleton. She was a member of Shell Point Baptist Church in Shallotte and retired as a ticket agent for Southern Railroad after 39 years. She was a widow of Henry B. Lewis.

Surviving are three sons, Mike Lewis of Rock Hill, Steve Lewis of Indian Trail, N.C., and Wayne Lewis of Charlotte; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McEwen Funeral Home.

Danny Quinn

ROCK HILL - Mr. Carl Daniel "Danny" Quinn Sr., 28, of 6743 Mandarin Drive died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today at Unity Baptist Church Cemetery in Hickory Grove, with the Rev. Marvin Carson officiating.

A native of York, Mr. Quinn was a salesman and detailer with Affordable Autos in York and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his son, Carl Daniel Quinn Jr. of Lando; his father, Carl A. Quinn of Rock Hill; his mother, Carolyn Marie Godbee of Spartanburg; his brother, Robbie A. Quinn of York; his sister, Crystal D. McClure of the home; his maternal grandfather, James D. Turner of Rock Hill; his maternal grandmother, Bessie Quinn of Rock Hill; and his fiancee, Joann Smith.

The family will receive friends after the graveside service and at other times at the home.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Dorothy Parker

LANCASTER - Mrs. Dorothy Robinson Parker, 67, of 304-C Rutledge St. died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Kershaw, with the Rev. Bryant D. Fersner Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Parker was a daughter of the late Zack P. Parker and Nettie Johnson Parker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kershaw, attended Eastside Baptist Church and was a retired seamstress.

Surviving are her son, Thomas F. Robinson of Lancaster; her daughter, Sandra R. Miller of Davidson, N.C.; her brother, Harvey Parker of Marion, N.C.; four sisters, Ruth Miller of Columbus, Ga., Susie Eades of Charleston, Lula Traylor of Chester and Shirley Ransom of Camden; her special friend, Billy Byrd of Lancaster; and her grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel and other times at the home.
