Virginia Shull

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Virginia C. Shull, of 742 Summerwood Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Forest Hills Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Sollie Hicks officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Shull was the widow of Atwell C. Shull. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she served on numerous committees and taught adult Sunday school. She was an active in The American Red Cross, Senior Citizen Executive Board, Girl Scouts of America, the PTA, hospital auxiliaries and the Easter Seal Society, where she served as county chairwoman.

Surviving are her son, Atwell C. Shull III of Lake Wylie; her daughter, Marilyn Black of Atlanta; four half-brothers, Lawrence Cabaniss of Rome, Italy, Robert Cabaniss of Stuart, Fla., Alfred Cabaniss of Florida, and David Cabaniss of Sierra Madre, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the World Hunger Fund of First Baptist Church or the Easter Seal Society of Columbia.

Bass Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

David Spinks

ELGIN - Mr. David Ivey Spinks Sr., 57, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999.

The funeral will be 5 p.m. Monday at Blaney Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lawrence Dennis officiating. Burial will be at Lugoff First Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Fort Mill, Mr. Spinks was a son of the late Johnny Columbus Spinks and Edna Miskelly Spinks. He was retired from Bell South and was a member of Blaney Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Rabon Spinks; his son, David Ivey Spinks Jr. of Charlotte; two daughters, Sandra Spinks of Charlotte and Sally Spinks of Elgin; three brothers, Richard Spinks of Lancaster, and Dean Spinks and Michael Spinks, both of Great Falls.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight in Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Blaney 2000 Building Fund, c/o Blaney Baptist Church, 1400 Blaney Road, Elgin, SC 29405.

Carolyn Stewart

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Carolyn Ann Stewart Stewart, 46, of 5272 Woodside Drive died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cauthen Funeral Home. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Harnett County, N.C., Mrs. Stewart was a daughter of the late Melvin Gold Stewart and Beulah Ivey Stewart. She was an employee of Frito-Lay and was a member of the Church in the Home.

Surviving are her husband, James "Jim" Stewart; her son, Alan Gannon Stewart of Jonesboro, Ark.; her daughter, Charlotte Stella Stewart of Rock Hill; five brothers, Corbett Stewart, Larry Stewart and Ronnie Stewart, all of Dunn, N.C., Lawrence Stewart of Fort Mill and Lloyd Stewart of Ridgeway; four sisters, Betty Younts of Climax, N.C., Lois Ammons and Vickie Goodson, both of Dunn and Kay Wilson of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials my be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260.

Stephen Vacendak

BOONE, N.C. - Stephen Vacendak, 25, of Boone, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, in Boone.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Boone, with the Rev. Conrad Hoover officiating. Burial will be at the Meat Camp Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lawrence, Mass., Mr. Vacendak was the son of Steve Vacendak of Rock Hill and Patty Vacendak of Durham. He was a graduate student in geography at Appalachian State University and was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his sister, Angie Vacendak of Durham; his paternal grandmother, Olga Vacendak of Rock Hill; and his maternal grandmother, Angie Specht of St. Louis.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the ASU Foundation for the Stephen Vacendak Scholarship in Geography, in care of Appalachian State University, Boone, NC 28607.

Mary Vincent

LANCASTER - Mrs. Mary Mackey Vincent, 91, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at the Lancaster Convalescent Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Bert Welch and Rev. Roy Barnes officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Monroe, N.C., Mrs. Vincent was a daughter of the late Walter Williford Mackey and Edna Hammond Mackey. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was the widow of Tillman John Vincent.

Surviving are three daughters, Johnsie Turner of Fort Lawn, and Mary Gibson and Brenda Brunson, both of Lancaster; two sisters, Doris Small of Lancaster and Betty Courtney of Royston, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and other times at 1113 Malvern Lane.

Yvonne Degraff

LANCASTER - Mrs. Yvonne Cecile Adele Beloin Degraff, 82, of 1803 Winterberry Lane died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Mercy South Hospital in Pineville, N.C.

A memorial Mass will be 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine Catholic Church, with Father Thomas Morrison officiating. Burial will be Oct. 25 at the St. Jerome Cemetery in Holyoke, Mass.

A native of Chicopee, Mass., Mrs. Degraff was a daughter of the late Zephir Cyprian Beloin and Ellen Agnes Donoghue Beloin. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church. She was a past president of the American Legion Post No. 353 in Chicopee and was a former member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was the widow of William Paul Degraff.

Surviving are two daughters, Bernardine Platko of Lancaster and Adele Scheidle of Southampton, Mass.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Margaret Parks

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Margaret Parks, 83, of 2282 E. View Road died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at her home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Adnah United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Leonhardt officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in Blythewood, Mrs. Parks was a daughter of the late William E. Platt and Lillie Watts Platt.

Mrs. Parks and her husband owned and operated Parks Grocery. She was a member of Adnah United Methodist Church.

She was the widow of James A. Parks Jr.

Surviving are her son, Danny Parks of Rock Hill; two sisters, Lila Revels of York and Lillie Mae Quinn of the home; two grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

William Landers Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. William "Bill" Morris Landers Jr., 42, of 357 Catawba Ave. died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at his home.

A memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Dr. William Pender and Susan Denne officiating.

A native of Asheville, N.C., Mr. Landers was a warehouse manager for Lane's Interiors in Rock Hill. Mr. Landers was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church. He was a stepson of the late S. Michael Camp.

Surviving are his father, William Morris Landers Sr. of Rock Hill; his mother, Jan Batchelor Camp of Rock Hill; his stepmother, JoAnn B. Landers of Rock Hill; his brother, Bobby Landers of Fort Mill; his sister, Mary Lawrence Prince of Rock Hill; his stepbrother, Michael Camp Jr. of Columbia; and his stepsister, Nancy C. Johnson of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends after the service in the church and at other times at the home of Jan Camp, 2021 Regency Court, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to Oakland Ave. Presbyterian Church or to the Worthy Boys and Girls Camp, c/o Rock Hill Police Dept., 120 E. Black St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Martha Lewis

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Martha Gregory Boor Lewis, 76, of 216 Marion St. died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Sollis Hicks officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.

Born in Edgefield, Mrs. Lewis was a daughter of the late Harry Howard Gregory and Blanche Frey Gregory. Mrs. Lewis had a degree in early childhood education from Winthrop University. She also attended Wesleyan College and graduated from Anderson Junior College. Mrs. Lewis served in the Women's Army Corps in World War II. She cared for both physically disabled and homeless children. She was the children's craft lady for Media Play in Charlotte and cared for neighborhood children. She was affectionately known as "Biggie." She was the widow of Ira Lewis.

Surviving are nine children, Stanley N. Boor of Tempe, Ariz., Pete Nichols, Tony Lewis and Steve Lewis, all of Warner Robins, Ga., Renee Winters of Dahlonega, Ga., Leisa Rogers of Baxley, Ga., Michele Gaudin and Rhonda Boor, both of Rock Hill, and Tanya Boor Parker of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two brothers, Harry Howard Gregory Jr. of Dunwoody, Ga., and Jacob F. Gregory of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Pollyanna Smith of Florence, Flora Comins of Gainesville, Fla., and Rebecca Futrell of Gilbert; 32 foster children; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers and gifts to the Martha G. Lewis Memorial Fund, c/o First Union Bank, 113 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 2970 to benefit and aid in the support of her physically disabled daughter.

Blaine Ashford

ROCK HILL - Mr. Blaine Roosevelt Ashford, 41, of 1033 Barrow Court, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Harvest Ministries of the Church of God of Prophecy, with the Revs. Lacy Ross officiating. Bishop Ernest Richard will give the eulogy. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Ashford was a graduate of Rock Hill High School. He was a songwriter and producer for the Smith Sisters of Rock Hill. He was an evangelist in the Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are his wife, Belinda Smith Ashford; three daughters, Tonia Ashford, Lashown Ashford and Jasmine Ashford, all of Rock Hill; his parents, Bishop and Mrs. Roosevelt Ashford of Rock Hill; and his sister, Alecia Ashford Smith of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of God of Prophecy, 830 S. Spruce St., and at other times at home.

Sara Bennett

SPRUCE PINE, N.C. - Mrs. Sara Ramsey Bennett, 77, of the Swiss Pine community died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, in a Spruce Pine hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Grassy Creek Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Wyatt Aiken and Walter Styles officiating. Burial will be at Greenlee Cemetery.

Mrs. Bennett was a daughter of the late Rev. Frank B. Edwards and Mary Plaxco Edwards. She was a member of Grassy Creek Presbyterian Church and was president of the Women's Church Circle. She was librarian at Paw Creek Elementary School in Charlotte for many years.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Bennett; three sons, Frank Ramsey; of Atlanta, Paul Ramsey of San Angelo, Texas, and Charles Thomas Bennett of Columbia; two daughters, Mary Buckle of Mooresville, N.C., and Gail McMillan of Waynesboro, Ga.; her sister, Harriette Davis of Oxford, Ga.; three grandchildren; her great-grandchild; and six step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. today at the church.
