Doris Blackmon

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Doris Blackwell Blackmon, 76, of 1800 India Hook Road died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Westminster Health Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at West End Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Lowery officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Blackmon was a daughter of the late Thomas Benton Blackwell and Nannie Sutton Blackwell. She was the widow of Hugh Robinson Blackmon. Mrs. Blackmon was a former director of nurses at Chester County Hospital and was a nurse at York County General Hospital and Piedmont Medical Center. She was a member of West End Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Thomas Hugh Blackmon of Charlotte; her brother, Tommy Blackwell of Rock Hill; and her sister, Janet Broughton of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends following the service in the education building parlor.

Willie Caldwell

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Willie Mae Douglas Caldwell of 274 Barber St. died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Sherman B. McBeth officiating and the Revs. Dr. Z.B. Wells, W.B. White and J.E. Garrison assisting. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of York County, Mrs. Caldwell was a daughter of the late Rev. Davis L. Douglas and Vassie Barber Douglas. She was a retired licensed practical nurse. She worked at Piedmont Medical Center for more than 37 years.

She was a member of New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church for more than 50 years, where she was a member of the Missionary Society, the Mothers' Club, Stewardess Board No. 1, and she was a former president of the stewardess board. She was a campaign worker for the March of Dimes. She was a member of Daughters of Light Eastern Star Chapter No. 151, the Heroines of Jericho and the AP&B Society.

Surviving are four daughters, Nancy Foster, Yvonne Long, Vanessa Davis, and Willie Ruth Aiken, all of Rock Hill; her son, Lonnie Caldwell Jr. of Rock Hill; her sister, Ida Barber of Richburg; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The body will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m. today. Robinson Funeral Home is in charge.

Margaret Clements

DALTON, Ga . - Mrs. Margaret Jo Ussery Clements died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Hamilton Medical Center.

Private funeral services will be 3 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church of Dalton chapel, with Dr. Jim Holderness officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Cemetery in Waycross, Ga.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Clements was a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Ussery and Mary Ellen King Ussery. She attended Winthrop University and the University of Georgia. She was a teacher and was an active member in many civic organizations. She also was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband, David Clements; her son, Ronald Bartlett Clements of Brunswick, Ga.; two daughters, Jo Clements Saye of High Point, N.C., and Olivia Clements Brasington of Waycross; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 510 S. Tibbs Road, Dalton, GA 30720.

James Elkins

CHESTER - Mr. James Thomas Elkins, 72, of 637 Still St. died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Bishop officiating. Burial will follow at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Elkins was a son of the late George and Maggie Benson Elkins. He was a retired industrial electrician and was a member of Second Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He attended the Chester County schools and graduated from Rock Hill High School.

He was a member of American Legion Post #34, where he was in the Drum and Bugle Corp.

Surviving are seven sons, Jerry Roberts, Billy Roberts, Tommy Roberts and Bryan Elkins, all of Chester; Frank Roberts of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Tom Elkins and Jim Elkins, both of Rock Hill; his daughter, Glenda Sandman of Fort Mill; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Ralph Furr

FORT MILL - Mr. Ralph Albert Furr, 79, of 9944 Sherrill Lane died Friday Oct. 22, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Pineville Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Michael Bearden, Dewey Wise and Carol Tate officiating. Burial will follow at Unity Cemetery.

A native of Pineville, N.C., Mr. Furr was a son of the late Albert G. Furr and Ada Drye Furr. Mr. Furr worked for the Celanese Corporation and later retired from Lancaster County Public Works. He was a member of the Pineville Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are his wife, Maude Porter Furr of Fort Mill; his son, Ralph Eric "Rick" Furr of Fort Mill; four daughters, Linda F. Manus of Weddington N.C., the Rev. Carol Tate of Monroe, N.C., and Terry Potts and Sandy Parker, both of Fort Mill; three brothers, Dewey Furr and James Furr, both of Fort Mill, and Ray Furr of Charlotte; three sisters, Laura Merritt of Charlotte, Lucille Stewart of Fort Mill and Helen Whitmire of Eutawville; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home of Fort Mill and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to The Monroe Christian Worship Center, 1721 North Charlotte Ave., Monroe, NC 28110.

Roxie Goddard

CHESTER - Mrs. Roxie Lois Smith Goddard, 84, of 550 Fifth St. died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Greg Keller officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Nicholsville, Va., Mrs. Goddard was a daughter of the late Bill Smith and Hattie Hopkins Smith. She was retired from Springs Industries and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are her son, Cecil Goddard of Rock Hill; her daughter, Mabel Geneva "Totsie" Hall of Chester; her sister, Beatrice Long of Kingsport, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Melvin Lemoine

LANCASTER - Mr. Melvin Joseph Lemoine, 69, of 1988 Burnette St. died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at home.

The Christian funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edgard, La. Entombment will be in the church mausoleum.

A native of Lucy, La., Mr. Lemoine was a son of the late Nicholas Lemoine and Agnes Madere Lemoine. He was a retired truck and school bus driver. Mr. Lemoine was a member of Saint Catherine Catholic Church and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his daughter, Lisa Lemoine Driggers of Lancaster, four brothers, Roland Lemoine of Algiers, La., Ross Lemoine and Stephen Lemoine, both of Ama, La., and Earl Lemoine of Metairie, La,; three sisters, Hilda Bordelon of Chalmette, La., Grace Hymel and Rosielie Waguespack, both of Vacherie, La.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends two hours prior to service time at the church.

Eula Montgomery

CLOVER - Mrs. Eula Mae Hogue Montgomery, 86, of 1600 Mason Montgomery Road died Saturday Oct. 23, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Bratton Funeral Home in York, with the Rev. Robert Sprinkle officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of York County, Mrs. Montgomery was a daughter of the late Sam Hogue and Strawcee Hogue. She was the widow of Mason Montgomery. Mrs. Montgomery was a retired winder who worked at American Thread. She was a member of Temple Presbyterian Church in America

Surviving are her son, Andrew R. Montgomery of Clover; her sister, Etta Sherer of York; three half-brothers, Bill Hogue of Lancaster, Elmer Hogue of Charlotte and Perry Hogue of Rock Hill; two half-sisters, Betty Smart and Martha Adkins, both of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Larry Sweat

FORT MILL - Mr. Larry Walter Sweat, 68, of 2345 Murel Lane died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville, N.C.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bratton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Parrish officiating. The burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

A retired weaver and U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict, Mr. Sweat was a son of the late Walter Sweat and Martha Berry Sweat.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bratton Funeral Home.

Wilson Kay

CHESTER - Mr. Wilson Jerome "Jerry" Kay, 48, of 606 McDowell St. died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at the Medical University of Charleston.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Chester ARP Church, with the Rev. Dwight Pearson officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Bamberg, Mr. Kay was a son of John C. Kay Jr. and Wilma Kay. He was a civil engineer with the Natural Resource Conservation Service for 29 years and was field engineer for the Chester district.

He was a member of Chester ARP Church, where he was a deacon and choir member. He was a graduate of Hanna High School and Clemson University. Mr. Kay was a member of the Chester Masonic Lodge #18, the Hejaz Shrine Temple and The Sons of the Confederate Veterans.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Phyllis O. Kay; his daughter, Mary Ann Kay of Chester; and his brother, Charles Kay of Anderson.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Jean Adams

RICHBURG - Mrs. Jean Gochenour Adams, 57, of 3495 Lancaster Highway died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999 at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Wallace officiating.Burial will follow at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Gilmer County, W.Va., Mrs. Adams was a daughter of Mary Langford Gochenour the late Okey Gochenour. She was a health-insurance plan builder with Employees Benefit Services in Charlotte.

Surviving are in addition to her mother are her husband, Marvin Adams; her son, Randy Adams of Rock Hill; two daughters, Tammy Warren of Charlotte and Susie Leary of Rock Hill; her brother, Jack Gochenour of Alliance, Neb.; her sister, Ruth Teuton of Bellview, Fla.; and three granddaughters.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Anna Eby

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Anna Szabo Eby, 86, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999 at Magnolia Manor.

A native of Allentown, Pa., Mrs. Eby was the widow of Charles Paul Eby.

Surviving are her son, Charles Eby of Rock Hill; her daughter, Ann Handler of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Cremation will be handled by Cauthen Funeral Home.

Robert Holland

FORT MILL - Mr. Robert Glenn Holland, 82, of Fort Mill died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Nicholson Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, with Randy Lee officiating.

A native of Taylorsville, N.C., Mr. Holland was a son of the late Glenn Holland and Lillian Mathieson Holland. He was the widower of Katherine Hilton Holland. He attended Mitchell College and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Mr. Holland was a realtor in Statesville, N.C. for more than 40 years. He was a member and past president of the Exchange Club and was a member of the Lifespring Church in Pineville, N.C.

Surviving are his wife, Joanna Hill Holland; two daughters, Robin Holland Najarian of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Katherine Holland Hailey of Atlanta; and three granddaughters.

Memorial may be made to Lifespring Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 759, Pineville, NC.

Mozell Hyman

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mozell Hyman, 87, of 868 Arlington Ave. died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Beverly Health Care.

Annie Ghent

LANCASTER - Mrs. Annie Shoemake Ghent, 79, of 2190 Flat Creek Road, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hyde Park Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bill Parker and Darrell Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mrs. Ghent was a daughter of the late Ervin Shoemake and Queen Anne Blackwell Shoemake. Mrs. Ghent was a homemaker and was a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Frank Ghent; five sons, Frank R. Ghent, Douglas Ghent, Bob Ghent, Lynn Ghent and Lee "Leroy" Ghent, all of Lancaster; six daughters, Anne Robinson, Fran Walters, Susan Taylor, Kathy Snipes, Debbie House and Louise Wuori, all of Lancaster; his brother, David Shoemake of Camden; three sisters, Bonnie Webb, Evelyn Dabney, Lou Beth Kelly, all of Camden; 22 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway.
