C. Ray Mellon Sr.

SHELBY, N.C. - Mr. Charles Ray Mellon Sr., 78, of 117 Wolf Road died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

A graveside service with military rites will be 11 a.m. Friday at Mull's Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ervin Price officiating.

A native of Cleveland County, Mr. Mellon was a son of Maude Lee Mellon of Shelby and the late Julius Ray Mellon. He was a retired farmer and textile fixer. Mr. Mellon was an Army veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of Mull's Memorial Baptist Church and was a member of the Council on Aging/Senior Center in Shelby.

Surviving in addition to his mother are four sons, Gene Mellon and Wayne Mellon, both of York, Dean Mellon of Seneca and Charles Mellon Jr. of Grover, N.C.; his daughter, Alice Wright of Jefferson; his brother, J.D. Mellon of Shelby; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Stamey Funeral Home and at other times at the home of J.D. Mellon, 1217 Glenwood Ave., Shelby.

Dora Mitchell

SHARON - Mrs. Dora Bridges Mitchell, 88, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Summitt Place in Simpsonville.

A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Sharon ARP Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Ken Reid officiating.

Mrs. Mitchell was a daughter of the late Luther Benjamin Bridges and Alice Martin Bridges. She was the widow of James Louis Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell taught elementary school for 43 years in Cherokee County, Buffalo, Smyrna and Sharon. She graduated from Asheville Normal Teachers College and earned her bachelor's degree from Wofford College. She did postgraduate work at the University of South Carolina. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Blacksburg.

Surviving are her brother, Paul Bridges of Simpsonville; and two sisters, Mary B. Alexander of Charlotte and Julia B. Cox of Spartanburg.

The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

James Pearce

FOREST HILLS, N.C. - Mr. James William "Jim" Pearce, 51, of the village of Forest Hills and formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Cullowhee United Methodist Church, with Dr. Frank Padgett officiating. Burial will be at Cullowhee United Methodist Church cemetery.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Winthrop University Chapel.

A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mr. Pearce was a son of Ruth Cranford Pearce and the late LeGrande Pearce.

Mr. Pearce served in the U.S. Army as commanding officer of the 3649th Heavy Equipment Maintenance Co. of the Ordinance Corps and was a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve.

An associate professor of management in Western Carolina University's College of Business, he was WCU's director of graduate programs in business for two years. He also taught for three years at Georgia State University and for two years at Winthrop University.

He earned his bachelor's degree in engineering from North Carolina State University in 1970, a law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1973 and a doctorate in operations management from Georgia State University in 1992.

For 11 years, he was in private practice with Pearce and Simpson Attorneys in Rock Hill. Mr. Pearce founded and was president of two companies: The Law Management Group Inc. and Strategy-Online Inc.

Surviving, in addition to his mother are his wife, Carol Hughes Pearce of the home; his son, William "Will" LeGrande Pearce of the home; and his brother, W.T. Pearce of Fairborn, Ohio.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Moody Funeral Home in Sylva, N.C.

Byerly Johnson

FORT MILL - Byerly McLeod Johnson, 64, of Fort Mill died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Prospect United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Miriam Mick officiating.

A native of Hartsville, Mr. Johnson was son of the late Harley Tillman and Bertha Griggs Johnson.

Surviving are his wife, Margie Moree Johnson; his son, Joshua Johnson of Fort Mill; two stepsons, Michael Williams and Craig Williams, both of Fort Mill; his stepdaughter, Aprill Gardner of Greenwood; two brothers, Jenkins Johnson of Selma, Ala., and Jack Johnson of Reno. Nev.; and his sister, Doris J. Stewart of Galveston, Texas.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Robert Beatty

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Robert "Deeboy" Beatty, 70, of Charlotte, formerly of Richburg, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at King's Funeral Home in Charlotte, with the Rev. Mary Rice officiating. Burial will be at York Memorial Park.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Beatty was a son of the late Rob Beatty and Bessie Beatty. He attended the public schools of Chester County and was employed by Rea Construction Co. for 40 years.

Surviving are his wife, Helen S. Beatty of Charlotte; four daughter, Delores Martin, Jeanette Martin and Georgia Glenn, all of Blair, and Mary E. Tidwell of Charlotte; four sons, Derrick Beatty of Columbia, John L. Beatty of Lancaster, Henry A. Beatty of New Jersey and Johnny L. Gladney of Charlotte; five sisters, Susie B. Gist, Elizabeth Crane, Katherine Greene, Sarah Harris and Elizabeth Crockett, all of Richburg; two brothers, Odell Beatty and William L. Beatty, both of Richburg; and a number of grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Kings Funeral Home, 4000 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte.

James Chalk

ROCK HILL - Mr. James Lewis Chalk, 52, of 761 Apt. A Jefferson Ave. died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Christian Home Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lloyd Reid officiating and the Rev. Bernard Morris assisting. The Rev. George Lowery will give the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Chalk was a son of the late Lonnie E. Chalk Sr. and Josie B. Wylie Chalk. Mr. Chalk was a member of Christian Home Baptist Church and attended the public schools of Chester County. He was a retired fork lift operator.

Surviving are his wife, Mattie P. Chalk of Chester; his son, Howard Pressley of Chester; four daughters, Lavenia Chalk, Maggie Chalk, Mary Chalk and Bernice Chalk, all of Chester; three brothers, Arthur W. Chalk of Chester, and Tommy Chalk and Wallace Chalk, both of Rock Hill; eight sisters, Lucille Joe, Janie McCoy, Shirley McClurkin, Gloria McClurkin and Brenda McCleave, all of Rock Hill, Josie Pressley and Mattie McClurkin, both of York, and Lula Sims of Chester; and 13 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mattie P. Chalk, 539 Saluda St., Chester and at the home of John and Gloria McClurkin, 647 Lige St., Rock Hill.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The body may be viewed from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

Lillie Graham

BALTIMORE - Mrs. Lillie Moore Graham of Baltimore, formerly of Chester, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Noble House Nursing Home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Joy Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Johnny Coad of Rock Hill and Joe Wallace Coad of Baltimore; seven daughters, Bernice Heath of Richburg, Geraldine Brown, Katherine Gaston, Louise Davis and Eunice Moore, all of Baltimore, and Shirley Smith and Alberta Grier of New Jersey; 46 grandchildren; and 55 great-grandchildren.

Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, is in charge of local arrangements.

Kaylie Hammonds

CLOVER - Miss Kaylie Faith Hammonds, infant daughter of Darren and Leslie N. Hammonds of 1076 Birchwood Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Mercy Maternity Center in Pineville, N.C.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Flint Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Fort Mill, with the Rev. Marvin Carson officiating.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her sister, Bailey Hammonds of the home; her paternal grandparents, Harlie and Charlotte Hammonds of Fort Mill; and her maternal grandparents, Russ and Lillie Noland of Lake Wylie.

The family will receive friends at home.

Robert Jennings

FORT MILL - Mr. Robert Landrum "Lanny" Jennings, 52, of 117 Brickyard Road died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1999, in Columbia.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Jimmy Howard officiating.

Mr. Jennings was a former teacher with the Lancaster County school district. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and earned his master's degree at Winthrop University. He was a former page for the Senate in Washington. He was an Air Force veteran and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are his mother, Thelma Jennings of Fort Mill; and his daughter, Leigh Ann Lausterer of Fort Mill.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 tonight at home.

Royce McManus

LANCASTER - Mr. Royce B. McManus, 81, of 6947 Pageland Highway died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Springhill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Greg Towler officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. McManus was a son of the late Robert B. McManus and Albaney McNeely McManus. He was retired from Catoe's Heating and Cooling. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Springhill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ella Jenkins McManus; two sons, Mackey McManus and Royce McManus Jr., both of Lancaster; his daughter, Beverly Biggers of Charlotte; four brothers, R.S. McManus of Concord, N.C., Keith McManus of Sumter, and Charles McManus and Lance McManus, both of Lancaster; four sisters, Mary L. Rogers of Indian Trail, N.C., Agnes Liles of Charlotte, Lottie Sutton of Pageland and Blanche Smith of Columbia; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service and at other times at home.

Hugh Millen

CHESTER - Mr. Hugh Williford Millen, 72, of 1724 Blackberry Trail died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Union ARP Church, with the Rev. Allen Derrick assisting. Burial will be at Union Cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Millen was a son of the late Robert M. Millen and Lena Williford Millen. He was a retired dairy farmer and retired York County school bus driver. He graduated from Oakley Hall High School and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Union ARP Church, where he served as an elder.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Weaver Millen of Chester; his brother, Robert M. Millen Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Glover Neal Jr.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Glover Neal Jr. of Charlotte, formerly of Chester, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fayetteville, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hopewell Baptist, with the Rev. J.D. Burris officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Neal was a son of the late Glover Neal Sr. and Lottie Cherry Neal. He was the widower of Annie Ruth Neal. Mr. Neal was a member of Mount Hopewell Baptist church and attended Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church. He was the operator of a grocery store in Charlotte for many years. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are two daughters, Glover Mae Stewart of Wadesboro, N.C., and Jessie Mae Smalls of New York; two stepsons, James Willie Neal of Fayetteville, N.C., and David Neal of Michigan; three sisters, Repozell Binns and Idelia Neal, both of Charlotte, and Claudia Davis of Providence, R.I.; his brother, Johnny Neal of Providence; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to noon today and Saturday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester, and from 2 to 7 p.m. today at King's Funeral Home, 4000 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte.

Julia Perry

CHESTER - Mrs. Julia Evelyn Vance Perry, 77, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Magnolia Manor in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Wilksburg Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. James Sanders officiating.

A native of Lockhart, Mrs. Perry was a daughter of Germie Rash Vance of Chester and the late Robert Byron Vance. She was the widow of Raymond Perry. Mrs. Perry was a retired nurse and served as an Army nurse during World War II. She attended Lockhart schools and was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her daughter, Virginia L. Martin of Greenville; three sisters, Ruth Taylor of Dublin, Ga., Mary Lee Eaves of Union, and Edna Gentry of Chester; her brother, William P. Vance of Sacramento, Calif.; and her grandson.

Memorials may be made to First Freewill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1656, Chester, SC 29706.
