Lester Williams Jr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Lester Heyward "Buck" Williams Jr., 64, of 2622 J.B. Denton Road died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Douglas Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Lawrence Peebles, Bruce Craig and Marvin Tennant III officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Williams was a son of the late Lester Heyward Williams Sr. and Everiote Lynn Williams. He retired from Lehigh Lancaster and was a member of Douglas Presbyterian Church. He was the widower of Myrtle Huffstetler Williams.

Surviving are three sons, Danny Williams of the home, Jerry Williams and Robert Williams, both of Lancaster; two daughters, Janet Bryson of the home and Robin Williams of Lancaster; three sisters, Betty Plyler, Dot Gregory and Carol Reed, all of Lancaster; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hartley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Douglas Presbyterian Church, cemetery fund, 2325 Sunday Place, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Jessie Adams

GREAT FALLS - Mrs. Jessie Mae Watson Adams, 71, of Georgetown Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Mount Zion Baptist Church, with the Revs. Michael Golden and Edward Jeter officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Adams was a member of the First Mount Zion Baptist Church and of the Eastern Stars, Mount Zion Chapter No. 143.

Surviving are her husband, Willie Adams Jr.; her daughter, Diane Adams of Great Falls; two sons, Frederick Adams of Great Falls and Jonathan L. Adams of Columbia; three sisters, Ethel Geneva Watson and Barbara Adams, both of Great Falls, and Esther Dean of New York; a devoted friend, Esther Lee White of Great Falls; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 7 tonight at Washington Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Elizabeth Carroll

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Elizabeth Franklin Carroll, 82, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Presbyterian Wesley Care Center.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Dr. Tim Mclendon officiating.

Born in Lula, Ga., Mrs. Carroll was a daughter of the late Wister H. Franklin and Hassie Boling Franklin of Rock Hill. A graduate of Kings Business College, she worked as a legal secretary with the U.S. Government Public Health Service in Atlanta for 20 years. She was a member of Myers Park Methodist Church in Charlotte.

Mrs. Carroll was the widow of William W. Carroll.

Bass Funeral Home is in charge.

Delzine Gilson

KERSHAW - Mr. Delzine Wallus Gilson, 86, of 157 E. Third St. died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at home.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Kershaw City Cemetery, with the Rev. Hugh McKinney officiating.

A native of Bethany, Pa., Mr. Gilson was a son of the late William Lathen Hopkins and Laura Lillian Gilson. He was retired from Corning Glass World, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8990.

Surviving are his wife, Emmer Lee Gilson; five sons, Delzine "Buster" Gilson of Rock Hill, Walter "Snookie" Gilson of Kershaw, Amesworth W.G. Gilson and Charles W. Gilson, both of Honesdale, Pa., and Francis "Frank" Gilson of Jacksonville, Fla.; four daughters, Mary Johnson of Kershaw, Rose Marie Mizzler of Honesdale, Pa., Nancy Ann Outen of Lancaster and Stella Gilson of Newark, N.Y.; his sister, Gussie Stegner of Hornesdale, 31 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Lewis Harper

YORK - Mr. Lewis Clyde Harper, 52, of 6012 Polly Circle died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lewis Bozard officiating. Burial will be at Philadelphia United Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of York, Mr. Harper was a son of the late Willis Thomas Harper and Adell Garrison.

A retired U. S. Army master sergeant with 27 years of service, Mr. Harper served in Vietnam and Desert Storm. He worked at Lowe's Home Improvements and was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Christina H. Jenkins of Lowell, N.C.; his brother, Grady Harper of York; three sisters, Kathleen H. Garvin of York, Lou Ann H. Griffin of Bessemer City, N.C., and Mary H. Galyan of Gastonia, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Philadelphia United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2343 S. Highway 321, York, SC 29745.

Lydia Hozey

ROCK HILL - Ms. Lydia Kay Pelt Hozey, 53, of 641 Rabun Circle died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at home.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Barry Eller officiating.

Born in Albemarle, N.C., Ms. Hozey was a daughter of the late Arthur Perry Pelt and Jewel Mauldin Pelt. Ms. Hozey was a bookkeeper at Leitner Construction Co. and also worked at Colonial Marketing. She was a member of Ebenezer ARP Church.

Surviving are her son, Russ Hozey of Rock Hill; her daughter, Leesa Hozey Easley of Pensacola, Fla.; her brother, Ed Pelt of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Walter McGill

CLOVER - Mr. Walter Mason McGill, 40, of 748 Gwinn St. Extension died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Generation Funeral Home, with the Rev. Billy Tate officiating. Burial will be at Zoar AME Zion Church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. McGill was a son of Mason McGill and the late Mary Allison McGill.

Surviving, in addition to his father, are eight brothers, Lester McGill and Charles McGill, both of the home, James Easter of Philadelphia, Willie Easter of Clover, Robert McGill of Cherryville, N.C., and Elmer McGill, George McGill and Leroy McGill, all of Gastonia, N.C.; and three sisters, Marie McGill, Mary Ann Sadler and Dorothy Ann McGill, all of Gastonia.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Generation Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Nettie Patterson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Nettie Bell Patterson, 104, formally of Great Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Great Falls, with the Rev. Edward Cook officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Patterson was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Tate. She was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church where she served on the deaconess board and the missionary board. She sung in the choir and was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars, Mount Zion Chapter No. 143. She worked as a private domestic housekeeper.

Mrs. Patterson was the widow of Elliot Patterson.

Surviving are her nephew, Robert Ingram Jr. of New Jersey; her niece, Mary I. Hightower of New Jersey; two cousins, Emma Jane Patterson and George Mingo, both of Lancaster; her stepdaughter, Macie White of Chicago; her stepson, Haskell Tidwell of Great Falls; her granddaughter whom she reared, Marilyn W. Small of Charlotte; 16 other grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Washington Funeral Home.

Ruth Queen

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ruth Mahaffey Queen, 78, of 1540 Twin Lakes Road died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Garden Sanctuary Church of God, with the Revs. Mike Wooten and Dexter Lambert officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Born in Simpsonville, Mrs. Queen was a daughter of the late Henry S. Mahaffey and Hattie Bagwell Mahaffey. She was a homemaker and a member of the Garden Sanctuary Church of God. She was the widow of Paul James Queen.

Surviving are three sons, the Rev. Larry Queen of Rock Hill, Jerry Queen of Sanford, Fla., and Frank Queen of Lowrys; two daughters, Lucille Rollings and Dorothy Huffstetler, both of Rock Hill; her brother, Paul Mahaffey of Woodruff; two sisters, Sarah Tollison and Lois Tollison, both of Greenville; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Evelyn Robinson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Lucy Evelyn Barber Robinson, 75, of 1722 Woodbrook Place died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Mercy South Hospital in Pineville, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roderick Pendleton Sr. officiating. The Rev. Dr. John T. McCoy will deliver the eulogy with the Revs. Dr. Osbey Roddey, Dr. Willie G. Boulware and Paul Long Sr. assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Robinson was a daughter of the late Rev. L.R. Barber and Emma Boseman Barber. She was a member of Mount Prospect Baptist Church, Mount Zion Baptist Church in McConnells and Galilee Baptist Church in York. She attended Rock Hill public schools and Benedict College in Columbia. She was a self-employed beautician.

She was the widow of Willie Cole of York and Hiliard Robinson Jr. of Rock Hill.

Surviving are her son, the Rev. Leroy H. Cole of Rock Hill; her daughter, Willie Ruth Wright Johnson of the home; three sisters, Emmalee Shaw of Inkster, Mich., Fleda Brown of Hamden, Conn., and Homzie Barber of Rock Hill; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church and at other times at the home.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in York.

Johnnie Starnes

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Johnnie Mae Baskins Starnes, of 432 Allen St., died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Piedmont Healthcare Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Prospect Baptist Church, with the Rev. C.D. Montgomery, pastor, officiating, and Dr. Harold Digs and the Revs. W.B. White, Richard Graham and Charles B. Kiser assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Born in York County, Mrs. Starnes was a daughter of the late Washington Baskin and Aillen Cathcat Baskin. She attended public school in York County and was a graduate of Friendship Junior College and Benedict College. Mrs. Starnes was a librarian at Friendship Junior College. She was the widow of John B. Starnes Sr., who was a former dean at Clinton Junior College.

Surviving are two sons, John "J.B." Starnes and James O. Starnes, both of Rock Hill; two daughters, Victoria A. Starnes and Joan Maria Starnes, both of Rock Hill; her sister, Marian B. Gaither of Rock Hill; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The body will be taken to the church at noon Saturday.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge.

Thomas Starnes

MORRISTOWN, N. J. - Mr. Thomas Jefferson "T. J." Starnes, 67, of 16 Gregory Terrace, formerly of York, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, in a Morristown hospital.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Carter Jr. officiating. Burial will be in a Morristown cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Quincy Bankhead Starnes of the home; two sons, Thomas J. Starnes Jr. and Bruce Starnes, both of Morristown; three daughters, Angie Starnes of Morristown, and Jackie Starnes Neely and Shena Starnes, both of Charlotte; three brothers, James W. Starnes and Perry L. Starnes, both of Morristown, and Oliver M. Starnes of Dover, N.J.; four sisters, Sitrena S. Berry of Rock Hill, Johnnie S. Gray of York, Georgia Juanita Starnes Glenn of Chicago and Rose S. Kelly of Columbia; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Wright Funeral Home in York is in charge of local arrangements.

Harold Carnes

LANCASTER - Mr. Harold Brown Carnes, 67, of 5181 Pageland Highway died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Revs. Robert Hopper and Donald Ghant officiating.

Born in Lancaster County, Mr. Carnes was a son of the late William Townsley Carnes and Hattie Jane Shute Carnes. He was a retired self-employed farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Oleen Plyler Carnes of Lancaster; his daughter, Susan Michelle Carnes of Lancaster; two brothers, Fred Carnes of Lancaster and Billy Ray Carnes of Kershaw; and five sisters, Jettie Fender of Seymour, Tenn., Frances Lee of Camden, and Martha McCain, Emily Franklin and Mary Catoe, all of Kershaw.

Memorials may be made to Hopewell United Methodist Church, 3734 Heyward Hough Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Hunter Chambers

ROCK HILL - Mr. Hunter D. Chambers, 76, of 4376 Fields Farm Road died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Beth-Shiloh Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. William Fox officiating.

A York County native, Mr. Chambers was the son of the late Dennis Chambers and Belle Youngblood Chambers. He was retired from Associated Mechanical Erectors and was a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II.

Surviving are two daughters, Denise Faulkenberry and Chonda Chambers Lane, both of Lancaster; two sisters, Martha Saverance of Rock Hill and Louise Saberg of Palmyra, Va.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel, and other times at the home of Martha Saverance, 1826 Lumpkin Circle.
