Jesse Herring

YORK - Mr. Jesse Wayne Herring, 52, of 1032 McAfee Court died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at his home.

The funeral will be private.

A native of Charlotte, Mr. Herring was a son of the late Jessing Herring and Myrtle Herring. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Geneva Herring; two sons, Jesse Herring of Rock Hill and Christopher Herring of York; his daughter, Jennifer Herring of Rock Hill; two brothers, Robert Herring of York and James Herring of Rock Hill; his sister, Brenda Allen of Chester; and his grandchild.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Fred Towery

FORT MILL - Mr. Fred B. Towery, 75, of Sutton Road died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

A memorial service will be 6:30 p.m. Monday at Wolfe Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce Wyatt officiating.

A native of Cliffside, N.C., Mr. Towery was a son of the late Coach Towery and the late Bertha Melton Towery. He retired from Cone Mills in Pineville, N.C., and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 34 in Rock Hill and the Fort Mill Moose Lodge No. 1240. Mr. Towery was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Towery; four sons, Vic Towery of Rock Hill, Joe Towery and Jerry Towery, both of Fort Mill, and Terry Towery of York; his daughter, Sherron Barrett of Fort Mill; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 830 N. Jones Ave., Rock Hill, SC, 29730.

Martha Adkins

RICHBURG -"Mrs. Martha Carolyn Leach Adams, 76, of 1214 Silverbrook Road died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Chester County Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Barron Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Sam Warwick officiating. Burial will be at Lando Cemetery.

A native of Stone Mountain, Ga., Mrs. Adams was a daughter of the late Charlie Leach and Naova Leach. She was a member of Heath Memorial United Methodist Church and was a retired secretary from the records department of Emory University in Atlanta.

Surviving are her husband, Harry Lee Adams; and her sister, Jean L. Crowe of Newport News, Va.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Joseph Aiken

LANCASTER -"Mr. Joseph Lindsay Aiken, 85, of 421 West Springs St. died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First ARP Church, with the Rev. Gilbert Rowell, Dr. Roy Beckham and Ernest Stroud officiating. Burial, with Masonic rites, will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Aiken was a son of the late William Alexander and Mary McGarty Aiken. He was a retired postal worker and a member of the First ARP Church, Jackson Masonic Lodge #53 and the American Legion. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

Surviving are his wife Doris Starnes Aiken; two daughters, Sandra Jo Aiken of Denver, N.C. and Mary Jane Aiken of Knoxville, Tenn.; his sister, Isla Aiken Boyd of Chester; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Sarah Campbell

CLOVER - Mrs. Sarah B. Campbell, 80, of 106 Wright Terrace died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Clover, with the Rev. W.T. "Dub" Massey officiating and the Rev. Keith Hunter assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Clover, Mrs. Campbell was a daughter of the late Andrew Witherspoon and Marie Brown Witherspoon. She was the widow of Thomas "Tom" Campbell. Mrs. Campbell was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the musical choir, president of the Home Mission, Sunday school superintendent, member of the Church Aide Society and as a custodian.

She was a member of the Queen Esther Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star, assistant recording union cooperative No. 2 secretary and was a member of the Clover Chapter Senior Citizens Women's Group. She worked at Klear Knit Industries and was a retired custodian from the former South Carolina National Bank.

Surviving is a niece whom she raised, Sara A. Dowdle of Charleston; two brothers, Alonzo Witherspoon and Lewis Witherspoon, both of Denver; her sister, Norma Jean Knox of Clover; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Wright Funeral Home in York and at other times at the home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Virginia Deal

CLOVER - Mrs. Virginia "Bunch" Clinton Deal of 115 Knox St. died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne Spear officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Deal was a daughter of the late Robert Clinton and Martha Adams Clinton. She was the widow of Clauston "Whit" Deal. She was retired from American Thread of Clover.

Surviving are her son, Dickie Deal of Clover; three daughters, Betty Lewis and Jean Berkland, both of Gastonia, and Dorothy Deal of Clover; two brothers, W.G. "Dub" Clinton of York and Bill Clinton of Clover; her sister, Catherine Wells of Clover; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral home.

Carrie Gordon

ROCK HILL - Carrie Bell Gordon, 65, of 308 Workman St. died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Chester County, with the Revs. W.W. Thompson and Georgette Boulware officiating. Burial will be at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of York County, Gordon was a daughter of the late Paul Gordon and Rosia Gaither Gordon. She attended Crawford School and Emmett Scott High School. She was a waitress at Jackson Cafeteria and was a member of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Robert Phillip Gordon of Tom River, N.J.; four brothers, Benjamin Gordon and Lonnie Gordon, both of Harrisburg, Pa., and Andrew Gordon and Tommie Lee Gordon, both of Rock Hill; and four sisters, Irene Hayes of Washington, D.C., Frances Brown and Ardeal Giles, both of Greensboro, N.C., and Julia Jones of Fair Haven, N.J.

The body may be viewed from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Parker Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the church.

Parker Funeral Home is in charge.

Dree'Asia Grier

CHESTER - Dree'Asia Nikyra Grier, the four-month old daughter of Mekissa Grier of 2633 Dawson Drive and Eddreco Gaston of Chester, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. W.E. Page officiating. Burial will be at Friendship Baptist Church cemetery.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her maternal grandmother, Gloria Grier of the home; her maternal grandfather, John Edward Grier of Lancaster; her paternal grandmother, Veronica Robinson of Chester; her paternal grandfather, Edward Gaston of Chester; her maternal great-grandmother, Nora B. Evans of Chester; her maternal great-grandfather, Joseph Evans of Chester; her paternal great-grandmother, Mary Hall of Chester; and her maternal great-great-grandmother, Griff Dunovant of Chester.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road in Chester.

C. Dixon Harp Jr.

LANCASTER - Mr. C. Dixon Harp, Jr, 54, of 217 Charlotte Ave. died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, in Lancaster County.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Dr. Mark Verdery officiating.

A native of Columbus, Ga., Mr. Harp was a son of the late C. Dixon Harp, Sr. and Burton Massey Harp of Rock Hill. He was a member of the Bows Hunter Club and was an avid deer hunter. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was employed by Diamonds, Inc.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Michele Wright and Katie Harp, both of Greenville; his brother, Frank Harp of Rock Hill; and his sister, Lee H. Odom of Greensboro, N.C.

The family will receive friends at the home at 217 Charlotte Ave. in Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 234 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC.

Dakila Lewis

RICHBURG -"Dakila Lewis, 9-month-old daughter of Merlin M. Lewis and Sandra L. Gaither, of 225-A S. Main St., died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Mount Moriah AME Zion Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Grady Sharps officiating.

Dakila was a native of Mecklenburg County.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her maternal grandparents, Charles and Phyllis Hemphill, both of Rock Hill; her paternal grandparents, Walter and Doris Lewis, both of Richburg; maternal great-grandparents, James and Louise Gaither, both of Rock Hill; and her maternal great-great grandmother, Allie V. Crockett of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at home.

King's Funeral Home at 135 Cemetery St. in Chester is in charge.

Birdie Locke

WASHINGTON - Mrs. Birdie L. Locke of Washington died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinidad Baptist church, with the Rev. John T. Rhodes officiating. Burial will be at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.

Surviving are her daughter, Connie Johnson; three sisters, Evelyn Hall, Inez Hemphill and Pearline Henderson; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her companion, George W. Lewis.

Willie McVay

CHESTER -Mr. Willie McVay, 84, of 2676 Ashford Road died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Fairfield County, with the Rev. T.G. Green officiating and the Rev. R.L. McClurkin assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Fairfield County, Mr. McVay was a son of the late Will McVay and Lizzie Hall McVay. He was a member of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board and choir leader for more than 35 years. He was a member of Cephas Masonic Lodge No. 320 (AITY No. 122) and the CB Society Armenia Lodge No. 2. He attended the Blackstock schools. He was retired from Springs Industries in 1982.

Surviving are his wife, Willie Viola McVay; five sons, James H. McVay of Baltimore, David McVay, Edward McVay and John Richard McVay, all of Chester, and Leroy McVay of Kings Mountain, N.C.; four daughters, Janie R. Strong, Elouise Mickle, Elizabeth Sanders and Dianne McVay, all of Chester; his brother, Henry McVay of Blackstock; two sisters, Lizzie Woods of Baltimore and Marie Hopkins of Chester; 22 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends form 7 to 8 tonight with Masonic Rites at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at King's Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Lula Miller

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Lula Burris Miller, of 1127 Constitution Blvd. died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Foundation AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Leroy McCrea officiating and the Rev. John T. McCoy assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Miller was a daughter of the late William Burris and Mary Anderson Burris. She was a member of Greater Foundation AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the Hymn Choir and the Usher Board. She attended York County public schools.

Surviving are three daughters, Tawanda R. McKinney and Jannatta Richardson, both of Rock Hill, and Claudette Morrison of Harrisburg, Pa.; her son, Paul Lindsey of Rock Hill; two brothers, Johnny Burris and J.T. Burris, both of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at home.

The body will be taken to the church at noon Wednesday.

J.C. Neal

CHESTER - Mr. J.C. Neal, 80, of 5334 George Beard Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rossville AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Anthony Commodore officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Neal was a son of the late Ida Dye Neal and the late Rob Neal. He was a former member of the Fraternal Union Lodge (Mason), and he retired from Elliott Plant in Fort Lawn.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie Lee Neal; two daughters, Deloris Lawrence of Alexandria, Va., and Dorothy Funderburk of Lancaster; his brother, Jerry Neal of Great Falls; his sister, Doris Bennett of Patterson, N.J.; three grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 5:45 p.m. today, 9 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday and from 1 p.m. until the funeral at the chapel of Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Rossville AME Zion Church.
