Gladys Knight

LANCASTER - Mrs. Gladys Hough Usher Knight, 93, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thurman Johnson officiating.

Burial will be at Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Knight was a daughter of the late Frank Hough and Alice Jane Faulkenberry Hough.

She was the widow of James Lee Usher and Thurlowe Knight.

A homemaker, she was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Jimmy F. Usher of Lancaster; her daughter, Mary Alice McManus of Lancaster; three sisters, Louise Usher, Irene Jones and Ada Horton, all of Lancaster; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of her son, Jimmy F. Usher, 5803 Pageland Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Memorials may be may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1841 N. Rocky River Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Ernest Langston

HARTSVILLE - Mr. Ernest Perry Langston, 86, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Mitch Houston and Carlisle Driggers officiating.

Burial will be at Magnolia Cemetery.

A native of Florence County, Mr. Langston was a son of the late Baxter R. Langston and Nellie Wilson Langston.

He graduated form St. John's High School and attended Clemson University.

He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Engineering Extension in safety engineering.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he served on the Official Board, as a Sunday school teacher for 15 years, superintendent of the youth division for four years, as a choir member and a member of the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee.

He was a member of the Red Cross and served several years as a first-aid instructor.

Mr. Langston was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge, where he served as Worshipful Master.

He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Associate and Worthy Patron of the Order and was a member and past president of the Matrons and Patrons Club, Order of the Easter Star.

He was corporate safety director at Sonoco Products from 1957 until his retirement in 1978.

He was chief of the Sonoco Fire Department for 15 years. He was a member and chairman of the Southern Pulp and Paper Safety Association and was a member of the Hartsville Civitan Club and the Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his wife, Eula Belle Driggers Langston; his daughter, Christa Anne Kea of Rock Hill; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church building fund, the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.

Norton Funeral Home is in charge.

Robert Mackey

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Robert Lee "Bob" Mackey, 84, of 4670 Muskett Road died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Fork Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Benji Simmons officiating.

Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Mackey was the son of the late William Perry and Mary Small Mackey. He was a retired carpenter and cabinet maker.

He was a member of Fork Hill Masonic Lodge No. 316 and was a member of Fork Hill Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and Sunday school director.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Ellis Mackey; two sons, the Rev. Bill Mackey of Louisville, Ky., and Ronnie Mackey of Heath Springs; four sisters, Ruth Hammond and Francis Sims, both of Heath Springs, Sara Mann of Jonesboro, Ga., and Martha Craig of Lancaster; his brother, N.B. Mackey of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Ronnie Mackey, 1207 Fork Hill Road, Heath Springs.

Memorials may be made to the Fork Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 1225 Fork Hill Road, Heath Springs, SC 29058.

James Martin Jr.

YORK - Mr. James Charlie Martin Jr., 60, of 1923 Loggen Road, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bratton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marvin Carson officiating and the Rev. Bob Hinsley assisting.

Burial will be at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

A native of Maiden, N.C., Mr. Martin was a son of the late James C. Martin Sr. and Nellie Martin. He was a heavy equipment overhauler with Firestone/Bridgestone for 27 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Hodge Martin; three sons, James Christopher Martin, Alfred Scott Martin and Ronald Lee Martin, all of Lincolnton, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Kathy Harris of Lake Wylie, Juanita Richardson and Mary Byrd, both of Clover; two brothers, Randy Martin and Carl Franklin Martin, both of Maiden; four sisters, Evlin Bolick, Vicki Herron, Judy Martin and Dorothy Smitt, all of Maiden; and 10 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Willie McVay

CHESTER -Mr. Willie McVay, 84, of 2676 Ashford Road died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Fairfield County, with the Rev. T.G. Green officiating and the Rev. R.L. McClurkin assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Fairfield County, Mr. McVay was a son of the late Will McVay and Lizzie Hall McVay.

He was a member of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board and choir leader for more than 35 years.

He was a member of Cephas Masonic Lodge No. 320 (AITY No. 122) and the CB&A Society Armenia Lodge No. 2.

He attended the Blackstock schools. He retired from Springs Industries in 1982.

Surviving are his wife, Willie Viola McVay; five sons, James H. McVay of Baltimore, David McVay, Edward McVay and John Richard McVay, all of Chester, and Leroy McVay of Kings Mountain, N.C.; four daughters, Janie R. Strong, Eloise Mickle, Elizabeth Sanders and Dianne McVay, all of Chester; his brother, Henry McVay of Blackstock; two sisters, Lizzie Woods of Baltimore and Marie Hopkins of Chester; 22 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to noon today at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. today.

Mary Plyler

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary McManus Plyler, 86, of 1264 Glasscock Road died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Neely's Creek ARP Church, with the Revs. Bill Fleming, Jeff Fox and Gene Plyler officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

A native of Pageland, Mrs. Plyler was a daughter of the late Uriah A. McManus and Exie Anis Williams McManus.

She was the widow of Johnnie W. Plyler.

She was the oldest member of Providence Baptist Church. where she played the piano.

She worked for Star Paper Tube Company for nine years.

Surviving are seven sons, George Amon Plyler of Bishopville, Ray Plyler and J. Charles Plyler, both of Rock Hill, John Wayne Plyler of Franklin, Va., Larry M. Plyler and Thomas M. Plyler, both of McConnells and Gene Plyler of Charleston; six daughters, Carolyn P. Price of Rock Hill, June Marler of Travelers Rest, Ethel McIntosh of Newton, N.C., Sue P. Gibson of Chester, Janice P. Cox of Myrtle Beach and Deborah P. Smith of Charlotte; 35 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church Building Fund, 1917 Old Friendship Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Danny Snipes

LANCASTER - Mr. Danny Marion Snipes, 46, of 3880 Great Falls Highway died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Eddie Usher officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Snipes was a son of Oscar Marion Snipes and Annie Moseley Snipes of Lancaster.

He was employed by Beam Construction Co. in Cherryville, N.C.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Ginny S. Mathis and Dianne Moore, both of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends at home.

Memorials may be made to Victory Baptist Church, 400 Grace Ave., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Arsonia Stevenson

RICHMOND HILL, N.Y. - Mrs. Arsonia "Mary Alice Shannon" Stevenson, 54, of 10506 134th St., formerly of Chester, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Beth Israel North Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Armenia Baptist Church in Chester, with the Rev. J.E. Darby officiating.

Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Stevenson was a daughter of the late Gennetter Shannon Sanders and Ernest Mofett.

She was educated in the Chester County public schools.

She retired from New York Life Insurance Co., after 32 years of service.

She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in New York, where she worked with the Sunday school nursery class, the October Club, the Courtesy Guild and the South Carolina Club.

She was a former member of Second Wilson Baptist Church in Chester.

Surviving are her husband, Marion Stevenson; two daughters, Barbara Stevenson-Felder and Connie Stevenson-Bey, both of New York; her son, Marion Stevenson Jr. of New York; three sisters, Anna Hudson of New York, Betty Wesley of Chester and Amanda Sanders of Richburg; her brother, James C. Sanders of Chester; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Lizzie B. Camps, 628 Ebony Grove Lane, Chester.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Julia Wolfe

LANCASTER - Mrs. Julia Lee Parker Wolfe, 85, of 2347 Charlotte Highway died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Taylor's Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. N.J. Neely and Dr. John Platt officiating.

Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native Union County, N.C., Mrs. Wolfe was a daughter of the late Alonzo Livingston "Lon" Parker and Vinnie Lee Helms Parker.

She was the widow of the Rev. Andrew Jackson Wolfe.

A homemaker, she was a member of Taylor's Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are her stepmother, Velma Yow Parker; two sons, Julian Wolfe of Kershaw and Larry Wolfe of Lancaster; two daughters, Esther Horton of Kershaw and Deborah Shirley of Florence; her sister, Mozelle Long of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Virginia Boone

LANCASTER - Mrs. Virginia Joy "Jenny" McLeod Boone, 59, of 510 W. Barr St. died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Revs. Norman Dobson and John Ladd officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Boone was a daughter of the late Larry "Slim" McLeod and Carrie Lillian Sims McLeod.

She was owner and operator of The Patio Restaurant and was a member of the Christian Life Center.

Surviving are her husband, Winfred Eugene Boone; two daughters, Bridget Culp and Wendy Deese, both of Lancaster; her sister, Fannie Mae Curtis of Lancaster; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends form 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral home.

Sylvanus Brown

YORK - Mr. Sylvanus "Chick" Brown, 81, of 112 Washington St. died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at White Hill AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Dr. W.O. Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

A native of York, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Isaiah Brown and Sally Byers Brown.

He was a retired custodian for the York school district and was a member of White Hill AME Zion Church and the AP&B Society.

Surviving are two nieces, who are his caregivers, Helen B. Wade and Delmarie Brown, both of York.

The family will receive friends at the home of Helen B. Wade at 153 Brown Neal Road in York.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 7 tonight at Wright Funeral home. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday.
