Lois Burris

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Lois Faye "Pudgie" Clinton Burris, 57, of 2784 Lesslie Dale Road died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Eastside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jimmy Holley and Jerry Devinney officiating.

Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Burris was a daughter of the late William Thomas Clinton and Cleo Pennington.

She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and was a greeter at Wal-Mart for five years.

Surviving are her husband, Bobby Joe Burris; four sons, Bryan Burris, Mark Burris, Keith Burris and Kevin Burris, all of Rock Hill; her daughter, Cristle B. Spelts of Rock Hill; two brothers, Richard Clinton and Ronnie Clinton, both of Rock Hill; four sisters, Fleeta Lewis, Sue Melton, Ellen Parrish, and Mary Alice Ballard, all of Rock Hill; nine grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Cristle Spelts, 2536 Harmony Road, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Eastside Baptist Church, 318 N. Jones Ave., Rock Hill.

Rev. Walter A. Coggin

BELMONT, N.C. - The Right Rev. Walter A. Coggin, a former president of Belmont Abbey College and the third Abbot Ordinary of Belmont Abbey Nullius, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999.

He was 83.

The funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Belmont Abbey Basilica, with the Most Rev. William G. Curlin, Bishop of Charlotte, the monks of Belmont Abbey and priests of the Diocese of Charlotte officiating.

Burial will be at Belmont Abbey Cemetery.

A native of Richmond, Va., the Rev. Coggin, O.S.B., Ph.D., was a son of the late Walter A. Coggin and Mary Veronica Moshay.

He graduated from Sacred Heart Grammar School in Richmond and attended Benedictine High School.

He graduated from Loyola High School in Los Angeles in 1934 and entered Belmont Abbey College.

He entered monastic life in 1936 at St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pa.

He professed his vows as a monk in 1937 at Belmont Abbey.

The Rev. Coggin completed his undergraduate studies at St. Benedict's college in Atchison, Kan., and did his seminary studies at Belmont Abbey Seminary.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1943 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Richmond, Va.

He did postgraduate work at the UNC-Chapel Hill and earned his masters and doctorate in philosophy at Catholic University of America.

At Belmont Abbey, he taught algebra in the preparatory school and philosophy in the college.

He served as ex-officio chancellor of Belmont Abbey College and for a time as president.

He resigned his office at abbot in 1970 and continued to teach fulltime for many years.

He taught part time until the end of this fall semester.

Surviving are his aunt and uncle and several cousins.

Vespers and Rosary will be at 7 tonight in the Abbey Basillica.

James Crosby

CHESTER - Mr. James T. "Bill" Crosby, 82, of 586 Thomas E. Davis Lane, formerly of Charlotte, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Ebenezer Baptist Church in the Leeds community, with the Rev. Frank Moore officiating and the Rev. J.K. Stringfellow assisting.

Cliff Dye will give the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Crosby was a son of the late Ervin Crosby and Ora Alexander Crosby.

He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, choir leader, superintendent of Sunday school and served on the Usher Board. He retired from Pet Milk Co. in Charlotte.

Surviving are his wife, Mae Bell Davis Crosby; six daughters, Lillie Mae Clinkscales, Helen Grier and Virginia Flowe, all of Charlotte, Laverne Halsey of Carlisle, Martha B. McCullough of Rock Hill and Alconnie Simpson of Chester; two sisters, Katie B. Bowser of Chester and Amma Hatsi of Silver Springs, Md.; his brother, Earl Crosby of Chester; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to noon today at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

Charlie Gates

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Charlie Watson Gates, 86, of 37 Walnut St. died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Edward Meeks officiating.

Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.

A native of McAdenville, N.C., Mr. Gates was a son of the late Lee Ander Gates and Lillie Watts Gates.

He was the widower of Mabel Ingle Gates. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. and a was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

He attended McAdenville schools.

Surviving are five sons, Charles E. Gates of Lancaster, Richard H. Gates of Honolulu, John L. Gates Sr. of Las Vegas, Joe D. Gates of Darlington, and Ronnie H. Gates of Rock Hill; his daughter, Jane Gates Suthard of Winnsboro; his sister, Grace Lorance of Lowell, N.C.; 23 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends form 6 to 8 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Milton Heavner

ROCK HILL - Mr. Milton E. "Butch" Heavner, 58, of 242 Ghent Court died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Bowman-Gray Medical Center, North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

A funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anne Catholic Church, with the Rev. William Pentis officiating.

Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

A native of Cumberland, Md., Mr. Heavner was a son of Oleta V. Furman of Olney, Md. and the late Eston B. Heavner.

Mr. Heavner was retired from Hoechst Celanese.

He was a member of St. Anne Parish, the Rock Hill Moose Lodge No. 1720, the Winthrop University Eagles Club and the Rock Hill Bowling Association.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Wendelle "Wendy" Morrissey Heavner; his son, Todd Eston Heavner of Gaithersburg, Md.; two daughters, Lori Ann Heavner Greene and Krista Lynn Heavner Hupp, both of Rock Hill; three sisters, Virginia Brown of Wilmington, N.C., Patricia Bassler of Richmond, Va., and Helen George of Cumberland, Md.; and six grandchildren.

The vigil will be 6:30 p.m. tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, after which the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Fred Krell

COLUMBIA - Mr. Fred Arthur Krell, 91, of Columbia died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Manor Care Health Care Center.

A graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Greenlawn Memorial Park, with the Revs. Randall Swindler and Hugh Bickley officiating.

A native of Columbia, Mr. Krell was a son of the late Luther A. Krell and Bessie Brickle Krell.

Mr. Krell was retired from the S.C. Highway Department, where he had worked as an engineer and surveyor for 45 years.

He was a member of the Surveyors Club, University of South Carolina Alumni and was a member of Suber Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Julia Huggins Krell; his daughter, Harriet Brown of Rock Hill; his brother, L.A. Krell of Dahlongea, Ga.; two sisters, Florine Hunsucker of White Rock and Alberta Gladden of Columbia; and his grandson.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia.

Memorials may be made to the organ fund at Suber Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church, 3900 Live Oak St., Columbia, SC 29205.

Ann McCraven

YORK - Mrs. Ann Faye McCraven, 57, of 222 S. Congress Street died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Northside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bob McCraven officiating.

Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mrs. McCraven was a daughter of the late Robert McCraven and Faye Conner McCraven.

She was the general manager of Palmetto Lanes Bowling in Rock Hill for 10 years. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Richard L. Moon of Myrtle Beach and Darryl R. Moon of Catawba; her daughter, Belinda Altonen of Rock Hill; two brothers, Robert McCraven of Fort Mill and David McCraven of Hilton Head Island; her sisters, Peggy Robinson and Carol Ellis, both of Fort Mill; seven grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home.

Thelma McPherson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Thelma Roberson McPherson of 1168 Twin Lakes Road died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Eastside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating.

Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Turbeville, Mrs. McPherson was a daughter of the late Joshua James Roberson and Mattie Baker Roberson.

She was the widow of Johnny McPherson.

She was previously employed with Hoechst Celanese Corp. and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, William T. McPherson of Rock Hill; three sisters, Lola Blanton and Buena McPherson, both of Rock Hill, and Bettie Carter of Columbia; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Lola Blanton, 1249 Melrose Drive, Rock Hill.

J.C. Neal

GREAT FALLS - Mr. J.C. Neal, 70, of 5334 George Beard Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral was Wednesday at Rossville AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Anthony Commodore officiating.

Burial was at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Neal was a son of the late Ida Dye Neal and Rob Neal.

He was a former member of the Fraternal Union Lodge (Mason), and he retired from Elliott Plant in Fort Lawn.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie Lee Neal; two daughters, Deloris Lawrence of Alexandria, Va., and Dorothy Funderburk of Lancaster; his brother, Jerry Neal of Great Falls; his sister, Doris Bennett of Patterson, N.J.; three grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester, was in charge.

Clarence Reynolds

ROCK HILL - Mr. Clarence E. Reynolds, 67, of 1039 Ridgemont Road died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Ray Mohrmann officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Ridgeway, Mr. Reynolds was a son of the late Robert Reynolds and Ruth Reynolds.

He was a retired supervisor at Southern Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served as a member of the property committee and as an usher.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Reynolds; three sons, Allen Reynolds of Charleston, Kenny Reynolds of Anderson and Wade Reynolds of Kissimmee, Fla.; his daughter, Cathy Horton of Lakeland, Fla.; two brothers, Roy Reynolds of Grovetown, Ga., and Grover Reynolds of Ridgeland; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 tonight at Grace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund, 508 Aiken Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Luther Wolfe Sr.

FORT MILL - Mr. Luther Nathaniel Wolfe Sr., 87, of 115 Ritch St. died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. John's United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Joe Tysinger officiating.

Burial will be at Unity Cemetery.

A native of Fort Mill, Mr. Wolfe was retired from Springs Industries.

He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Louise M. Wolfe; his son, Luther N. Wolfe Jr. of Rock Hill; two daughters, Margaret Withers of New Mexico and Betty Bailey of the home; his brother, Bascom Wolfe of Monroe, N.C.; his sister, Bobbie Helms of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Fort Mill Funeral Home.
