Marvin Chappell Sr.

SHARON - Marvin S. "Booney" Chappell Sr., 63, of Sharon died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill after a brief illness.

The funeral was Sunday at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, Sharon, with the Revs. Clyde Mitchum and James McGill officiating. Burial will be at the Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Mr. Chappell, brother of York County Councilman Curwood Chappell, was the youngest son of John Henry Chappell and Eve Porter Chappell.

Before retiring a year ago, Mr. Chappell spent more than 42 years delivering mail to homes farms and business in the Ogden area, near Smith's Turnout, where the family has farmed for many years. Mr. Chappell South Carolina's Rural Mail Carrier of the Year two years ago,

His fellow rural carriers honored him as the state's top rural carrier at their annual convention in 1997. He also was recognized that year by the National Carriers Association.

Chappell, a farmer, graduated from Lewisville High School. He was a member of Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church.

Suviving are his wife, Jean Dowdle Chappell; two sons, Marvin Smith Chappell Jr. of Gastonia, N.C., and Mica Chappell of Rock Hill; five brothers, Phil E. Chappell and Rudolph Chappell, both of Chester; Melton Chappell of Vista, Calif., and Curwood Chappell, Warren "Pete" Chappell and John Henry "Jack" Chappell II, all of Rock Hill; his sister, Joyce Chappell Abbott of Darlington; and three grandchildren.

Bratton Funeral Home was in charge.

Juanita Cronister

ROCK HILL"-"Mrs. Juanita Elizabeth "Nita" Wright Cronister, 64, of 1425 Decatur Drive died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's United Methodist Church, with Dr. Timothy W. McClendon officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mrs. Cronister was a daughter of the late Walter and Mamie Wright. She was retired from Washburn Graphics in Charlotte and was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.

Surviving is her son, Walter Henry Cronister of the home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Zelma Lowery

PAGELAND - Mrs. Zelma Jenkins Lowery, 94, formerly of 401 N. Sycamore St. died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at the Hospice House II of Monroe, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Taxahaw Baptist Church, with the Revs. Patricia Stone and Jeff Williams officiating. Burial will be at Massey Cemetery in Taxahaw.

A native of Taxahaw, Mrs. Lowery was the daughter of the late Robert Jenkins and Rona Jenkins. She was the widow of the late James B. Lowery and was a member of Taxahaw Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Lancaster.

Surviving are three sons, James E. Lowery of Monroe, Joseph H. Lowery of Thorndale, Pa., and Dr. J. Jenkins Lowery of Peachland, N.C.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel.

Vangie Mabry

BOONE, N.C. - Mrs. Vangie Wortman Mabry, 94, of 2152 George Hayes Road, formerly of Shelby, N.C., died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Glen Stone Health Care.

The funeral was Monday at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home in Shelby, with the Rev. Dr. Harold Fite officiating. Burial was at Cleveland Memorial Park.

A native of Cleveland County, N.C., Mrs. Mabry was a daughter of the late Lon Wortman and Jennie Pritchard Wortman. A homemaker, she was the widow of Claude Lee Mabry. She was a charter member of Eastside Baptist Church in Shelby.

Surviving are her son, Hal Mabry of Boone; two daughters, Norma Sorgee of Rock Hill and Carol Shook of Boone; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Mackey

LANCASTER - Mrs. Mary Usher Mackey, 82, of 2451 Campbell Road died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Chesterfield General Hospital.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Junior West officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Mackey was a daughter Thomas Andrew Jackson Usher and Frances Minnie Bell Barr Usher. She was the widow of William James Mackey. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, James E. Mackey Sr. and Tommy L. Mackey, both of Lancaster; two daughters, Billie Ann Hartis of Pageland and Sally D. Mackey of Lancaster; her brother, George Usher of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren,

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Tommy L. Mackey, 1748 Hance St., Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Lonnie Raffaldt Sr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Lonnie R. Raffaldt Sr., 63, of 2888 Pageland Highway died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000.

The funeral will be be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hopewell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Hopper. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chesterfield, Mr. Raffaldt was a son of the late Lonnie Andrew Raffaldt Jr. and Estelle Marie Raffaldt. He was a retired employee of Springs Industries and was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Lougenia Lloyd Raffaldt; two sons, Lonnie R. Raffaldt Jr. and Donald Raffaldt, both of Lancaster; two brothers, Fred Junior Raffaldt of Lancaster and Ansel Raffaldt of Cheraw; two sisters, Shirley Baker of Gastonia, N.C., and Geraldine Stevens of Lancaster; three grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends form 6 to 8 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Pearl Stewart

LANCASTER -"Mrs. Pearl Hardin Stewart, 81, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at the Lancaster Convalescent Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hartley Funeral Home chapel, with Dr. Jim Spencer officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Stewart was a daughter of the late Calvin Marion Hardin and Ida Steele Hardin. She was retired from the Lancaster plant of Springs Industries and was a member of the Second Baptist Church.

Mrs. Stewart was the widow of Elmer Wesley Stewart.

Surviving are two sons, Finley Stewart and Gerald Stewart, both of Lancaster; her brother, Charles Hardin of Lancaster; three sisters, Frances Revels, Dorothy Watts and Mae Ida Lucas, all of Lancaster; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home in Lancaster, and at other times at the home of her son, Finley Stewart, at 1582 Converse St. in Lancaster.

Frances Sullivan

CARTHAGE, N.C. - Mrs. Frances Moore Sullivan, 67, of Carthage, formerly of Rock Hill, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at FirstHealth/Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, N.C.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Carthage United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Terry Huffiness officiating. Burial will be at Cross Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Sullivan was a daughter of the late Luther C. Moore and Gladys Cole Moore. She was a retired bookkeeper. She was a former member and secretary at St. John's United Methodist Church in Rock Hill.

Surviving are her husband, J. Robert Sullivan Jr.; her daughter, Harriett S. Riley of Siler City, N.C.; her sister, Billie M. Mackey of Carthage, N.C.; two step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Clifford Threatt

KERSHAW - Mr. Clifford Stephen "Steve" Threatt Jr., 79, of 5164 Ussery Road died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

A graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. today at Kershaw City Cemetery, with Rev. Dr. Bryant Furser officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Threatt was a son of the late Clifford Stephen "C.S." Threatt and Henrietta Whaley Threatt. He was a retired self-employed brick mason, was a member of First Baptist Church of Kershaw, was a member of the 100th Infantry Association and was a past member of the Civil Air Patrol. He served in the United States Army during World War II in France and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. He was the widower of Pauline Sowell Threatt and Mary Mae Holroyd Threatt.

Surviving are his son, Gary Stephen Threatt of Kershaw; his daughter, Gail Adams of Lancaster; three sisters, Carolyn Gatwood of Cary, N.C., Annie Goodwin of Wills Point, Texas, and Lily Grey Parker of Colleyville, Texas; and two grandsons.

CLOVER - Mrs. Ruth Shillinglaw Walker, 80, of 609 Bethel St. died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Clover Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. William Neely and avid Stanford officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

Born in York County, Mrs. Walker was a daughter of the late John Shillinglaw and Annie Shillinglaw. She was the widow of Thomas Walker and was a member of Clover Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two sons, Johnny Walker of Gastonia and Jeff Walker of Clover; two daughters, Louise Walker of Oklahoma and Terry Dancy of Charlotte; her brother, Dick Shillinglaw of York; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at M.L. Ford Sons Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Clover.

George Aldridge

LANCASTER - Mr. George Vernon Aldridge Sr., 84, of 1432 Spring-dell Road, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church, with the Rev. James D. Spencer III officiating. Burial will be in Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Harris, N.C., Mr. Aldridge was a son of the late George Washington Aldridge and Nora Phillips Aldridge. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. He was retired from Springs Industries' Lancaster plant after serving as a supervisor for 40 years. He was a member of Hart Masonic Lodge No. 380.

Surviving are his wife, Vivia Ford Aldridge; and two sisters, Monnie Buckner of Forest City, N.C., and Mary Godfrey of Rutherfordton, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel and other times at the home.

Lewis Bailey

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Lewis Waling Bailey, 78, of 355 Banner Road, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at St. Luke United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carlos Gardner officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Bailey was a son of the late Lester Waling Bailey and Annie Bell McKeown Bailey. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and was a retired farmer.

Surviving are two sisters, Mildred B. Mathis and Mayo Ellis, both of Lancaster.

Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Ann Gnirke of Surfside Beach; her sister, Inez Waynick of Summerfield, N.C.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
