Allen Quesnoy

COLUMBIA — Mr. Allen Lee Quesnoy, 78, of Columbia, died Sunday, October 24, 2004. The family will receive friends at Greenlawn Funeral Home Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. The body will be forwarded to Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Weir, Kansas, for funeral services.

Born February 17, 1926 in Pittsburgh, Kansas, he was the son of the late Charles Quesnoy and the late Gladys Nichols Quesnoy. He had been a resident of Columbia since 1960 and had worked for Louries Department Store for over 25 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in WWII.

Surviving are sister, Betty Louise Merrell of Rolla, MS; two nephews, Gary Hamilton of Winston-Salem, NC, and Dan Hamilton of Norman, OK.

Marjorie Porterfield

WHITE ROCK — Services for Marjorie E. Porterfield, 89, will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 2:00 PM at The Lowman Home Chapel with burial to follow in Providence Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at The Lowman Home Chapel. Memorials may be made to The Lowman Home or Providence Lutheran Church. Caughman Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel is in charge.

Mrs. Porterfield died Friday, October 22, 2004. Born in College Springs, Iowa, she was the wife of the late Cecil Paul Porterfield and the daughter of the late Dyer Ernest and Lulu Martha Dunlavy Cuttell. She was a member of Providence Lutheran Church and a longtime resident of Lexington but resided at The Lowman Home for the past several years. Mrs. Porterfield was a volunteer at the Lexington County Public Library for many years.

Surviving are her daughter, Rita Kay Porterfield of Torrence, CA; son, Dr. Michael Porterfield of Irmo; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Carmalita Jillson of Clarinda, Iowa; brother, Jack S. Cuttell of Venice, California; step-brother, William Daily of Virginia and half-brother, Dee Cuttell of Arizona.

Linda Peek

ROCK HILL — Services for Linda Blackwelder Peek, 60, material management buyer, 2 p.m. today at Faith Family Christian Center; burial: Pleasant Hill UMC Cemetery, Fort Mill. Greene Funeral Home, Northwest is in charge. Born in Fort Mill to Dorothy Plyler Ross and June Blackwelder, she died Oct. 23, 2004. Surviving are mother; children, David Pender, Pam, Sherry Williams; siblings; grandchildren.

Robert Nettles

SUMTER — Robert Mason Nettles, 90, husband of Marjorie Brunk Phillips Nettles, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born April 29, 1914, in Wedgefield, he was a son of the late Elias Whilden Nettles and Lucy Mellette Nettles.

Mr. Nettles was twice married, first to the late Roland Tucker Nettles, then to Marjorie Brunk Phillips Nettles.

He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Sumter, where he served as a deacon and elder. Mr. Nettles had a life-long relationship with Nu-Idea School Supply Company, a family owned business founded by his father-in-law, Roy H. Tucker. In 1989, he retired as President and CEO. Mr. Nettles received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to the school and church equipment business, including, several times, South Carolina and North Carolina representative to the National School Supply Institute. He served on boards of manufacturers of school desks of church pews and equipment in South Carolina, North Carolina and Texas .

Mr. Nettles served as a member of the YMCA Board, Salvation Army Board, Sumter County Development Board, Sumter Committee for Progress, Sumter-Shaw-Lee Area Boy Scout Board, Sumter Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sumter Rotary Club.

Mr. Nettles was a past member of the Brohun Lake Club, Couples Dinner Club, and charter member of the Cotillion Club. He was also a member of First Families of South Carolina and the Huguenot Society.

Mr. Nettles is survived by his wife of Sumter; two sons, Robert Mason Nettles, Jr. of Awendaw and Tucker Whilden Nettles of Pawleys Island; three daughters, Roland Nettles Moise of Dallas, Texas and Mary Louise Nettles Dalton of Bassett, Virginia and Nancy Lee Nettles Woodward of Sumter; three step-daughters, Carol Phillips Kirven of Sumter, Patricia Phillips McEwen of Rochester, N.Y. and Virginia Phillips Nasipak of Del Ray, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Nettles Crumpton of Sumter, Eliza Ann Nettles Wessinger of Columbia; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Elias Whilden Nettles, Jr., and a sister, Louise Nettles McLaurin.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Zane Moore and Dr. Thomas Painter officiating.

Burial will follow in the Wedgefield Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

His eight grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

Albert Miller

ATLANTA — Albert Miller, 91, died October 20. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of Charles and Anna Miller. He graduated from Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania and served as an officer during World War II. He was married to the late Dorothy F. Miller and the late Annette Newman Miller. He is survived by a daughter, Jeanney (and Steve) Kutner of Atlanta, and son, Rusty (and Kathy) Miller of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Rob (and Sheryl Zohn) Kutner, David (and Calley) Kutner, Rebecca Miller, Mark Miller, and Anne Katherine Miller; a great-grandson, Miller Davidson Kutner; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held in Atlanta on Sunday October 24. Memorials welcome to Zaban Shelter, 1605 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30309.

Dr. Buchanan McKay

COLUMBIA — Memorial service for Dr. Buchanan McMaster McKay, 79, will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Foundation Building Fund, 1100 Sumter Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Dr. McKay died October 17, 2004. Born on July 18, 1925, he was the son of the late Douglas and Anne Lowndes Walker McKay. He attended public schools in Columbia, graduated from the University of South Carolina with honors and received the prestigious Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award, the highest award a university can give to a student. He graduated from Duke Medical School and took his residency in pediatrics at the University of Virginia.

“Dr. Buck,” as he was affectionately known, volunteered for the Air Force and was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. Upon discharge, he returned to Columbia and practiced pediatrics for a number of years with Dr. Richard Josey. For health reasons, he returned to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, where he practiced as a civilian pediatrician. While at Davis-Monthan, he established its first pediatric ward. He was co-author of the first medical thesis on Valley fever in Children. Upon his retirement from civilian employment at Davis-Monthan, he received the Air Force Certificate of Service “in recognition of sixteen years of faithful and devoted federal service.” He was also awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, one of the highest awards the Air Force presents to a civilian, which reads in part: “His accomplishments as a physician, researcher and educator are distinctive and have represented a major contribution to the health and welfare of the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base military community.”

Later he was responsible for the formation of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arizona Medical School in Tucson. From 1972 until 1995 he worked at the El Rio Clinic in Tucson. Patients and colleagues have many good memories of working with him during these years.

Surviving are his brothers, Douglas McKay, Jr. and Julius W. McKay; brother-in-law, Col. Edward Chalgren; seven nieces and nephews; and seventeen great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Anne Lowndes McKay Chalgren.

The family will be at the Julius McKay home, 4203 St.Clair Drive, Columbia.

Millie Lynch

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Mrs. Mildred “Millie” Geddings Lynch, 76, will be held 1 o’clock Wednesday, October 27, 2004 in St. Andrews Lutheran Church Cemetery, with The Reverend John Trump officiating. Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans National Service Foundation, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lynch died Monday, October 25, 2004. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late John Maynard Geddings and Cansadia Geneva Grice Geddings. Mrs. Lynch was employed with Eckerd Drug Store for 30 years in the Cosmetic Sales Department at the Main Street and Five Points locations. She was a long time member of the St. Andrews Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her daughter Vicki A. Lechner and husband, Louie of Chapin, a grandson, Jeremy P. Lechner of Columbia. Mrs. Lynch was preceded in death by brothers; William Geddings and John Geddings and sisters; Hazel Geddings and Betty Wright.

Gracie Kirby

COWARD — Services for Gracie Tanner Kirby, 70, widow of Lonnie Kirby Jr., 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brockington Funeral Home; burial: Lake City Memorial Park. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City. Born in Georgetown Co. to Robbie and Verlie Owens Tanner, she died Oct. 24, 2004. Surviving: children, Kertrinka Powell, Stephen, Lonnie Kirby; siblings; grands; great-grandchildren.

Estaline King

MULLINS — Mrs. Estaline Williamson King, 69, wife of Gene C. “J.M.” King, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 27 at the chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Alvin Shifflett officiating. Burial will follow in Devotion Gardens Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mrs. King was born February 9, 1935 in Florence County, a daughter of the late Herschel and Mattie Gasque Williamson. She was a retired factory worker and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. King in addition to her husband of the home are a son, Carl King and his wife, Brenda, of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter, Kim Richardson of Mullins; a grandson, Chris Campbell of Normal, Illinois; 2 sisters, Sarah “Dolly” Sawyer of Columbia and Geneva Tolson of Florence; several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allan, VA 23058.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 7 til 9 p.m. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Carson Keenan

CHESTER — Services for Carson Keenan, 78, WWII and Korea veteran, 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church; burial: Evergreen Cemetery; visitation 6:30-7:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home. Born in Chester Co. to Joseph and Macy Louise McGarity Keenan, he died Oct. 24, 2004. Surviving: wife, Louise Carter Keenan; children, Joseph Keenan, Clair Payne, Cindy Phifer; grands; sister, Ellen Revels.

Valeria Jollie

GARDEN CITY BEACH — Valeria Faircloth Jollie, age 88 of Garden City Beach died Monday, October 18, 2004.

Born June 15, 1916 in Tabor City, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Olive Lee Faircloth. Mrs Jollie was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church, a member of the Conway Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, served faithfully for many years in the Women’s Missionary Union, the Southern Baptist Convention and was a very active volunteer in her community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James W. Jollie in 1992 and a son Bill G. Jollie, in 2002.

Surviving are her daughter, Betty J. Massey of Piedmont, James E. Jollie of Columbia, and Michael C. Jollie of Easley; two sisters, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Services were held and directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1935 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29612.
