Edward Aberman

Edward Aberman, a Rock Hill businessman and a leader in York County's efforts to attract businesses and diversify beyond the region's traditional textile base, died of heart failure at Piedmont Medical Center Monday. He was 67.

Aberman, who lived in Rock Hill his entire life, was regarded as an unpaid, one-man economic development team who actively wooed manufacturing and other businesses to relocate to York County.

"A lot of people owe their jobs to him," said Mark Farris, director of the York County Economic Development office. "Before economic development was a true profession, he recognized the value of new industry and investment in the county. "

Aberman often entertained prospective companies at his home and paid expenses out of his own pocket.

"Eddie was one of those selfless servants who are rare," Farris said. Aberman was the chairman of the York County Economic Development Board when it was founded in 1979.

"He was a leader - something we are in dire need of," Farris said.

Aberman also is credited with leading local efforts to acquire housing for the mentally disabled in the 1980s.

In 1983, Aberman and Marshal Doswell formed York County Special Housing Inc., which was able to secure federal financing for two group homes, Meadowlark and Marrett in Rock Hill. Those group homes now are part of a 28-group home network run by the York County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs.

For years, Aberman and his wife, Mary Ann, who is chairwoman of the Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, hosted a summer picnic and Christmas party for group home residents at their lakefront home.

"He has been just a big supporter of people with disabilities regardless of their age and functioning abilities," said Joan Smith, executive director of board.

The son of a junkyard owner, Aberman owned several businesses, including a machine shop and an industrial equipment sales and repair business, and he leased commercial space. In recent years, he headed Edward Aberman & Associates, which conducted appraisals of industrial equipment and machinery.

"He was an expert machinist and equipment operator," said his son, Mickey Aberman.

And Aberman wasn't selfish about his knowledge, his friends recalled. Through his involvement with the York Tech Foundation, Aberman was instrumental in the school's expansion of its machinist and electronics courses, said Ed Duffy, vice president of development at York Technical College.

"He had a heart that reached out to everyone," Duffy said. That generosity was apparent in the volunteer efforts and free appraisals Aberman conducted for the school, Duffy said.

"This is great loss to Rock Hill," Duffy said. "He was involved with so many projects, it's hard to keep up with them."

During the early 1950s, Aberman was a soldier assigned to the atomic bomb test sites in Nevada. He also chaired the York County 2010 Commission that was created by the county to plan for future growth.

Aberman is survived by Mary Ann, his wife of 45 years; his son, Mickey Aberman of Charlotte; his daughter, Ann Aberman of Columbia; his sister, Leah Aberman Barker of Greens-boro, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

"He was a really good dad and grandfather," his son said. "That was a what he was best at."

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, with Rabbi James Bennett officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to York County Special Housing Foundation, New Horizons of Rock Hill, c/o York County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, 7900 Park Place Road, York, SC 29745 or to Temple Beth El, 5101 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.
