CLOVER - Mrs. Mary Frances Raper Pursley, 69, of 3250 South U.S 321 died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Clover ARP Church, with the Rev. Rob Patrick officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

A native of Gaston County, N.C., Mrs. Pursley was a daughter of the late John Raper and Annie Raper. She was a member of Clover ARP Church and was secretary of Pursley Grading.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Pursley; two sons, Robert Pursley Jr. and John Pursley, both of Clover; her daughter, Ann Jackson of Clover; her brother, Robert McCarter of York; her sister, Jane England of York; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Carl Stewart Sr.

CLOVER - Mr. Carl Boyd Stewart Sr., 57, of 1328 Burrell Road died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Clover First United Methodist church, with the Rev. Paul Hutchison officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Mr. Stewart was a son of Sue Quinn Stewart of Clover and the late James Herbert Stewart. He was a member of Clover First United Methodist Church and was a retired engineer with Rauch Industries.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Celia Ammons Stewart of Lake Wylie; two sons, Carl B. Stewart Jr. of Clover and Stephen D. Stewart of Lake Wylie; his daughter, Meg Norris of York; his brother, Jim Stewart of Clover; two sisters, Jackie S. Jenkins and Maxie S. McCarter, both of Clover; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 today at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home and other times at the home of his mother, 1278 Burrell Road.

Edith Barber

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Edith L. Barber of 1025 Ogden Road died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roderick Pendleton officiating and the Revs. Walter B. White, Arthur Randolph Jr., Charles Pratt, Osbey Roddey and Ronnie Baxter assisting.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Barber was a daughter of the late Ira Barber and Patsy Sitgraves Barber. A member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, she was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School, Friendship Junior College and Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. She taught in the rural and city schools of Rock Hill.

Mrs. Barber was the widow of Leverette A. Barber Jr.

Surviving are her adopted daughter, Minnie S. Saunders of Rock Hill; her half brother, James Ira Barber of Brandywine, Md.; two grandsons; and three great-grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Clemons Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Agnes Beckham

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Agnes Roberts Beckham, 81, of 261 S. Herlong St. died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Beverly Health Care Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bass Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Tom Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Kershaw County, Mrs. Beckham was a daughter of the late Enoch Roberts and Bertha Roberts. She was the widow of Claude Beckham.

A homemaker, Mrs. Beckham was a charter member of Woodhaven Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Mike Nichols of Rock Hill; three sisters, Robbie Cobb of Lugoff, Suzie Reeves of Kershaw and Louise Mason of Virginia; her brother, Bobbie Roberts of Kershaw; and her grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Bass Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to The Ronald McDonald House, 81 Gadsden St., Charleston, SC 29403.

Betty Jo Cox

MULLINS - Mrs. Betty Jo Cox, 72, of 816 Sandy Bluff Road died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Frey officiating. Burial will follow at Cedardale Cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Cox was a daughter of Garrett Hobart Denning and the late Sarah Duncan Denning. She was a 1947 graduate of Winthrop College and was a retired school teacher. She was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her father of Myrtle Beach are her husband, William B. "Billy" Cox of Mullins; her son, Dr. W.B. "Chip" Cox Jr.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to Macedonia United Methodist Church, building fund, 402 N. Main St., Mullins, SC 29574 or to the charity of choice.

Harold Ivy

ROCK HILL - Mr. Harold "Hal" Taylor Ivy, 69, of 830 Rocklyn Drive died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Catawba Baptist Church with Dr. Tommy Huddleston officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Norcross, Ga., Mr. Ivy was a son of the late Tom Ivy and Lessie Lawson Ivy. He was a retired printer with Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co., with 37 years of service.

He was a former professional baseball player for the Rock Hill Chiefs, with whom he played catcher and right field. Mr. Ivy was a member of Catawba Baptist Church, where he worked with adult and youth athletic programs.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel Greer Ivy; three daughters, Danny Ivy Hall of Fort Mill, and Donna Ivy Strickland and Denise Ivy Wallace, both of Rock Hill; his brother, Thomas Ivy of Norcross; his sister, Louise Ivy Clark of Eatonton, Ga.; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren, and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Mary Comer

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Kathleen "Kat" Lovelace Comer, 77, of 621 Arch Drive died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Shytle officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Comer was a retiree of J.P. Stevens Industrial Mill and was a member of West End Baptist Church.

She was the widow of George Thomas Comer.

Surviving are five sons, "Butch" Comer of Yuma City, Calif., Frankie Comer of Kershaw, Ronnie Comer of Hickory Grove, Jeff Comer and Martin Dean Comer, both of Edgemoor; her brother, Melvin Lovelace of Rock Hill; two sisters, Betty Winchester of Rock Hill and Peggy Bigham of Jacksonville, Fla.; her stepsister, Lila Barr of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son, Jeff Comer, 1726 Hall Spencer Road, Edgemoor.

Tommy Taylor

BESSEMER CITY, N.C. - Mr. Tommy M. "Snook" Taylor, 74, formerly of Clover, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Green Pond United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles L. White Jr. officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Taylor was a son of the late John Frank Biggers and Ivory W. Biggers. He retired from Firestone of Gastonia, N.C., and worked at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home and the former Black's Funeral Home.

Surviving are his wife, Paulette Johnson Taylor; six sons, Aaron Taylor, Kalem Taylor and Kyle Taylor, all of the home, Jerome Taylor and Walter Taylor, both of Charlotte, and Tommy Taylor Jr. of Elk Grove, Calif.; three daughters, Nancenia of Joliet, Ill., Ruth Ella Nelley of of Landover, Md., and Delores of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and his sister, Louise Adams of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Generation Funeral Home.

James Barfield Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. James "Jim" Leo Barfield Jr., 63, of 1454 Sprouse Court died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Patty Griffith-Fallaw officiating and the Rev. Dean Crocker assisting. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

A native of Greenwood, Mr. Barfield was a son of James L. Barfield Sr. and Fannie Chastain Barfield of Greenwood. He was retired owner and operator of Action Press in Rock Hill, which he founded in 1981. Prior to opening Action Press, he worked in the printing industry for several countries throughout the state. Mr. Barfield was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Woodman of the World, Travelers Protective Association and Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Agnes B. Barfield; three sons, James Barfield of the home, Steven M. Barfield of Fort Mill and Timothy A. Barfield of Rock Hill; his daughter, Patricia B. Boatwright of Florence; two brothers, B. Wayne Barfield of Augusta, Ga., and J. Blake Barfield of Greenwood; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Aldersgate United Methodist Church and at other times at the home.

Della Boykin

LANCASTER - Miss Della Louise Boykin of Lancaster died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. today at St. Paul AME Zion Church, with the Revs. Robert L. Cleckley and Nathaniel Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Clinton Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Miss Boykin was a daughter of the late John Boykin and Bessie Witherspoon Boykin. Miss Boykin was a retired school teacher and taught in South Carolina and Georgia public schools for more than 38 years. Her last two positions were head librarian and North Junior High School and Lancaster High School. She earned her bachelor degree from Allen University in Columbia and her master of library science degree from North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C. She did other graduate work at Hampton Institute in Hampton, Va., and Winthrop University in Rock Hill.

Miss Boykin was a member of the Palmetto Teachers Association, the Lancaster County Teachers Association, the Velda Bridge Club, Queen Elizabeth Chapter No. 179 Order of the Eastern Star and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

A member of St. Paul AME Zion Church, she served on the Steward Board, the usher board, the Emergency Club and was co-director of the youth department.

Surviving are two brothers, John E. Boykin and Dr. James A. Boykin, both of Lancaster; and her sister, Mary Matthews of Lancaster.

Arthur Catoe

KERSHAW - Mr. Arthur Miller "Budge" Catoe, 74, of 485 Scout Cabin Road died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bobby Owens officiating. Burial will be at Blackmon Cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Catoe was a son of the late Samuel Catoe and Tressie Irene Garris Catoe. He was retired from the South Carolina Highway Department and was a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Alice Faile Catoe; three sons, Michael Wayne Catoe, Jimmy Charles Catoe and Darrell Catoe, all of Kershaw; five brothers, Audrey Catoe, Robert Catoe and Kever Catoe, all of Kershaw, David Catoe of Fort Lawn and William Catoe of Heath Springs; three sisters, Elviree Rice of Kershaw, Edith Burton and Patricia Huffstelter, both of Columbia; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1:30 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Betty Coble

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Betty Lampley Coble, 61, of 3553 India Hook Road died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Leroy Cox officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Rockingham, N.C., Mrs. Coble was a daughter of the late Dargan F. Lampley and Mary Diggs Lampley. She was retired from Klear Knit Inc. with more than 20 years service. She was a member of First Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are her husband, Lonnie E. Coble; her daughter, Lori C. Phillips of Rock Hill; four brothers, J.D. Lampley of Wallace, Floyd Lampley, Lewis Lampley and Bobby Lampley, all of Rockingham; her sister, Velna L. Martin of Charlotte; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Sallie Galloway

LANCASTER - Mrs. Sallie Jane Taylor Galloway, 91, formerly of Memorial Park Road, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in a Columbia hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Revs. Allen Brazell and Dr. Stephen S. Masolwa officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mrs. Galloway was a daughter of the late William Samuel Taylor and Rachel Alice Gainer Taylor. She was the widow of James Benjamin Galloway. A housewife, Mrs. Galloway was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, James E. Galloway of Lancaster and Wade J. Galloway of Heath Springs; three daughters, Linda Vick, Louise Knight and Grace Hinson, all of Lancaster; her sister, Irene Hinson of Lancaster; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral home and at other times at the home of Grace Hinson, 157 Woodside Lane, Lancaster.
