Homer McCully

GAFFNEY - Mr. Homer Carl McCully, 56, of Brookview Health Care Center in Gaffney, formerly of Clover, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Brookview Health Care Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Bowling Green Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. John Cody officiating.

A native of York County, Mr. McCully was a son of the late John Mc-Cully and Nancy Graves McCully.

Surviving are his brother, Robert Marion McCully of Rock Hill; and his sister, Betty Warren of York.

The family will receive friends after the service.

M.L. Ford Son Funeral Home is in charge.

John Plott

AIKEN - Mr. John H. Plott, 87, of Woodward Street died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park in Edgefield.

A native of Copan, Okla., Mr. Plott was a retired supervisor at the Savannah River Plant. He was a Mason and Boy Scout leader for many years. A Navy veteran, he was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three daughters, Claudette Drummond of Rock Hill, Loretta Carson of Houston and Dianne Burnett of Sheldon; his brother, Jewell S. Plott of Victorville, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home in Edgefield.

Merlin Pofahl

STAR, N.C. - Mr. Merlin Arthur Pofahl, 72, of Star died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

A graveside service with military honors will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro, N.C., with the Rev. Dr. Don Davis officiating.

A native of Red Wing, Minn., Mr. Pofahl was retired from the Air Force and served in Vietnam. He operated Merl's Tire Center for 27 years.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Tipton Pofahl; his sister, Olive Johnson of Red Wing; and his stepson, Robert Hussey of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Phillips Funeral Home in Star.

Leland Redmond

YORK - Mr. Leland George Redmond, 61, of 829 Meadow Bend Drive died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church in Clover, with the Rev. Dr. Elwood Seamster officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of Schenectady, N.Y., Mr. Redmond was a son of the late George Redmond and Phoebe Van Patton Redmond. He was a fuel desk clerk for Schneider National Trucking Co. and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he spent more than seven years as a fire protection specialist. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife. Dolores Eignor Redmond; his son, George Redmond of Clover; four daughters, Cynthia Ashworth and Terry Red-mond, both of York, Kimberly Thomas of Clover and Jessica Redmond of Rock Hill; his brother, John Redmond of Schenectady, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Paul Williford

ROCK HILL - Mr. Paul Anderson Williford, 82, of Rock Hill died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gloryland Freewill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Phil Lemons officiating and the Rev. Ralph Brown and Mr. Valmore Black assisting. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of Union, Mr. Williford was a son of the late Samuel Edward Williford and Sadie Hyder Williford. Mr. Williford worked 30 years at Monarch Mills in Union and retired from Springs Industries White Plant in Fort Mill, where he worked as a loom fixer.

Surviving are his wife, Audrey Roberts Rainey Williford; four sons, S.W. Williford of Hickory, N.C., Paul Dean Rainey of Union and John David Rainey and Steve Rainey, both of Rock Hill; three daughters, Joyce Williford Candler of Union, Lisa Williford Funderburk and Lynn Rainey Devinney, both of Rock Hill; two brothers, Jesse Williford and George Williford, both of Union; 20 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Margaret Armstrong

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Margaret Wallace Armstrong, 70, of 3079 Harmony Road died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating. Burial will be at Providence Baptist Cemetery.

A native of Calhoun, Ala., Mrs. Armstrong was a daughter of the late Claude Wallace and Lillian Swofford Wallace. She was the widow of Henry Carlton Armstrong. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Piedmont, Ala. Mrs. Armstrong was retired from Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co. and was an avid gardener.

Surviving are four sons, Ronnie Armstrong and Larry C. Armstrong, both of Augusta, Ga., Michael E. Bice of Anchorage, Alaska, and Danny C. "Butch" Armstrong of McConnells; six daughters, Henri Lynn Gunnels of Jacksonville, Ala., Rita A. Bennett and Deborah J. Smith, both of Rock Hill, E. Regina Brakefield of Troy, N.C., Sandra D. Collins of Fort Mill and Margaret K. Jones of Mesquite, Texas; her sister, Barbara Bice of Piedmont, Ala.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Deborah J. Smith, 3079 Harmony Road, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association South Carolina Affiliate, 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia, SC 29201.

Baxter Austin

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Baxter Floyd "Buck" Austin, 84, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Incarnation Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Mark Wilhelm officiating. Burial will be at Sharon Memorial Park.

A native of Polkton, N.C., Mr. Austin was a son of the late Ella Austin and the late Lum Austin. He was a member of the Masons and the Shrine. Mr. Austin owned and operated Austin Cushions and Canvas Co. for 47 years.

Surviving are his wife, Viola Austin; his son, Gordon Austin of Fort Mill; his daughter, Merlyn Bivins of Fort Mill; his brother, Jack Austin of Charlotte; his sister, Blake Makey of Indiana; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at McEwen Funeral Service Pineville Chapel at other times at the home of Merlyn Bivins.

Kathryn Falkner

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Kathryn Yost Falkner, 91, of 421 Barksdale Court died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Ebenezer Rehabilitation Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Shafer-Winans Funeral Home in Cortland, Ohio. Burial will be at East Mecca Cemetery in Mecca Township, Ohio.

A native of Martins Ferry, Ohio, Mrs. Falkner was a daughter of the late William Milford Yost and Caroline Yates Yost. She was widow of William James Falkner. Mrs. Falkner was a retired legal secretary for Gessner and Platt Law Offices. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Cortland Opal Chapter No. 181. She was a member of the Mecca Community Church, the Mary Chesney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Cortland Literary club. She was a graduate of Spencerian Business College in Cleveland, Ohio.

Surviving are her daughter, Joan Falkner Root of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Cauthen Funeral Home in Rock Hill is in charge.

James Mobley

ROCK HILL - Mr. James O. "Jungle Jim" Mobley, 46, of 215 Baker St. died Saturday, Jan 15, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at China Grove AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Johnny Worthy officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Mobley was a son of the late James Mobley and Nola Anderson. A construction worker, Mr. Mobley attended Emmett Scott High School and Clinton College. He was a member of China Grove AME Zion Church.

Surviving are his son, Antwan Burris of Rock Hill; two daughters, Laueia Killian and Tawanna Mobley, both of Rock Hill; five sisters, Timothy Crome, Carrie Jones, Gloris McNeal, Rita Miller and Karen Uhomoibhi, all of Rock Hill; and his grandchild.

The body may viewed from 4 to 7 today at Parker Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Willie Helms

CLOVER - Mr. Willie Redfern Helms, 74, of 588 Riddle Mill Road died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at River Hills Community Church, with the Revs. Jeffery Vickery and Bill Hoffman officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of Union County, N.C., Mr. Helms was a son of the late Redfern Odell Helms and Lena A. Carter Helms. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired construction supervisor and was a gifted brick and stone mason.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Rowland Helms; two sons, Jerry Helms and Eric L. Helms, both of Clover; his brother, Paul K. Helms of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; his sister, Dorothy Helms Messer of Belmont, N.C.; and two grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at at M.L. Ford Sons Funeral Home.

Haywood Hogans

ROCK HILL - Mr. Haywood Benjamin Hogans of 222 Bowser St. died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, with the Rev. S.B. McBeth officiating and the Revs. Z.B. Wells, Ronal King and Sister Syvilla Massey Feaster assisting. Entombment will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Hogans was as son of the late Haywood Watson Hogans and Marie Reid Hogans. Mr. Hogans was a graduate of Boyd High School in Brooklyn. He attended West Virginia State University.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and served in Germany and earned the Occupation Medal of Germany.

He was a bookkeeper at C.V. Star Insurance Co. He retired in 1982 from the New York Police Department after 23 years of service. In 1985, he was named job developer for Carolina Community Action in Rock Hill. He served on on the board of directors for Catawba Regional Community Government. He was a member of New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, where he was a trustee and was a member of the men's club.

Surviving are his wife, Everine T. Hogans; three sons, Haywood F. Hogans of Rock Hill, Kenneth W. Hogans of St. Albans, N.Y., and Reginald B. Hogans of Brooklyn; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at noon Thursday.

The family will receive friends at home.

Memorials may be made to New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church building fund, 527 S. Dave Lyle Blvd., Rock Hill, SC 29730

Margaretta Falzer

FORT MILL - Ms. Margaretta Mulligan Falzer, 89, of Wood Ridge Drive died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Episcopal Cathe-dral in Topeka, Kan. A memorial Eucharist will be noon Thursday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Milford, Conn.

A native of Mayetta, Kan., Ms. Falzer was a daughter of the late Edward Augustus Mulligan and Mary Josten Mulligan.

Ms. Falzer was a psychiatric nurse and worked in inpatient facilities in Topeka, including the Topeka State Hospital, where she helped start an occupational therapy and day-treatment program for severely mentally ill patients. She also managed a small group home for psychiatric outpatients.

She retired from the Menninger Foundation of Topeka in 1975. She moved to Fort Mill in 1984 and was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill.

Surviving are her son, Dr. Paul R. Falzer of Milford, Conn.; her brother, Arthur F. Falzer of Inverness, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Menninger Foundation, P.O. Box 829, Topeka, KS 66601-0828.

Pauline Sowell

LANCASTER - Mrs. Pauline Williams Sowell, 77, of 2604 Pineview Drive died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at White Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Bobby Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kershaw County, Mrs. Sowell was a daughter of the late Joseph Walter Williams Sr. and Susan Vincent Williams. She was retired from Springs Industries' engineering department and was a member of the Leroy Springs Senior Citizens Club, She was a Mission Service Corp. volunteer with the S.B.C. Home Mission Board for seven years and was director of the S.B.C. Moriah Association Christmas Missions Booth for 12 years. She was an active member of White Springs Baptist Church, where she was an assistant Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Senior Adult Choir.

Surviving are her husband, John S. Sowell; two sons, Mitchell W. Sowell of North Augusta and Michael R. Sowell of Shelby, N.C.; her daughter, Bonnie S. Dickens of Columbia; three brothers, Henry Williams of Heath Springs, Joe Williams of Kershaw and Earl Williams of Lugoff; two sisters, Sarah Lane of Lancaster and Viola Sowell of Kershaw; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to White Springs Baptist Church, Family Life Center, 1249 Grace Ave., Lancaster, SC 29720.
