Eva Sowell

KERSHAW - Mrs. Eva Hasty Sowell, 81, of 3512 Flat Rock Road died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Kershaw County Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Thorn Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Davis and Leon Lancaster officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Camden, Mrs. Sowell was a daughter of the late Lonnie L. Hasty and Ella H. Hasty. She was a member of Thorn Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday school class, church choir and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Woodman of the World Camp 620 and was retired from Skyline Ltd.

Surviving are her husband, Arthur Cleveland Sowell; her son, Gary Sowell of Kershaw; her brother, Lee A. "Burt" Hasty of Walhalla; her sister, Grace H. Gay of Kershaw; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Thorn Hill Baptist Church, 2587 Kershaw Country Club Road, Heath Springs, SC 29058.

G. Jones Whisonant

ROCK HILL - Mr. G. Jones Whisonant, 89, of Rock Hill died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Neely's Creek ARP Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Fleming officiating.

A native of Morganton, N.C., he was a son of the late Irvin Whis-onant and Rosa Lee Seagle Whisonant. He was a member of Neely's Creek ARP Church since 1938, where served as a deacon and elder for more than 40 years and was a member of the men's Bible class. Mr. Whisonant was a farmer and retired from Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co.

Surviving are his wife, Rubye Nunnery Whisonant; his son, Lewis Manning Whisonant of Rock Hill; his half brother, Irvin Whisonant of Rock Hill; three half sisters, Dollie Mangrum, Frances Branham and Mary Ward, all of Rock Hill; and his grandson.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Lewis M. Whisonant.

Memorials may be made to Neely's Creek ARP Church general fund, 974 Neely's Creek Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Jackie Adkins Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Jackie "Jack" Adkins Sr., 67, of 3760 Reid Road died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Zoar United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Howard officiating and the Rev. Joe Tysinger assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Fort Mill, Mr. Adkins was a son of Marie Elizabeth Gordon Adkins of Fort Mill and the late Henry Ezetic Adkins. He was a retired millwright with T A Materials Handling Inc. of Charlotte, with more than 25 years service. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Janice Osborne Adkins; two sons, Jackie Lee Adkins Jr. of Charlotte and Timothy "Tim" Stevenson Adkins of Pineville, n.c.; three stepsons, William Timothy Dallas, Thomas Anthony "Tony" Dallas and Robert Trent Dallas, all of Rock Hill; two stepdaughters, Donna Dallas Borchert of Rock Hill and Michelle Dallas Caudle of Tega Cay; three brothers, Howard Eugene "Gene" Adkins, Pete Adkins and Charles Thomas "Red" Adkins, all of Fort Mill; two sisters, Mary Ellen Adkins Briggs of Fort Mill and Barbara Adkins Parks of Rock Hill; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

Gracie Belk

LANCASTER - Mrs. Gracie Therrell Hilton Belk, 81, of 2922 Woodland Way died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Zion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frank Lybrand and Elton Hunter officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Kershaw County, Mrs. Belk was a daughter of the late Oscar Therrell and Ola Therrell. She was the widow of Edgar T. Hilton. A member of West Side Baptist Church, she was a former manager of the Hub Restaurant and worked with the Buford school cafeterias.

Surviving are her son, Oscar Raeford Hilton of Dothan, Ala; four daughters, Cathy Martin, Robbie Knight, Margie Vincent and Wanda Sweet, all of Lancaster; her brother, Ernest Therrell of Spartanburg; two sisters, Zulene Robinson of Cassett and Frances Wright of Lesslie; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Donna Blake

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Miss Donna Ann Blake, 38, of 766 Capital Ave. died Sunday, Jan 16, 2000.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Stradford, Conn. Burial will be in Connecticut.

A native of Bridgeport, Miss Blake is a daughter of Lugenia McClurkin Blake of the home and the late Fred Alfred Blake. She was a former computer operator and currently worked as a teacher's aide in Bridgeport. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her son, Sharone Blake of the home; two brothers, Herman L. Blake of Charlotte and Ernest A. Blake of the home; and her sister, Debbie Jean Abbott of Massachusetts.

Morton's Mortuary in Bridgeport is in charge.

Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester, is in charge of local arrangements.

Odell Buckson

CHESTER - Mr. Odell Buckson, 56, of 110 Lowery St. died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Christine McCoy officiating. Burial will be at the Cedar Rock Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Buckson was a son of Estelle Buckson and the late John Sanders. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore. He was a member of Mount Hebron AME Zion Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are eight brothers, John Robert Buckson, Theodore Ward, Lucius Buckson and Freddie Sanders, all of New York, Jessie Ward of Baltimore and George Sanders, Arthur Sanders and Jessie Sanders, all of Chester; and nine sisters, Janie Brown of Baltimore, Tracy Buckson of Chester, Rannie Hinton of Bronx, N.Y., Josephine Brown of Laureton, N.Y., Betsy Nalls of Sanford, Fla., Mary L. Delgado of Columbia, Maggie Smith of Greenville, Roberta Sanders of Simpsonville and Irene Sanders of Laurelton, N.Y.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body will be placed in the church at the 12:30 p.m. Saturday

Ira Cathcart

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ira Cathcart, 89, of 3862 Landon Lane died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at New Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. E.E. Vance officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Cathcart was the son of the late Lawson Cathcart and Fannie Cathcart. He was the widow of Janie Douglas Cathcart. He was retired as a Winthrop University custodian and from Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co. He attended the public schools of York County. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, where he was a member of the hymn choir.

Surviving are four daughters, Margarie Cathcart of the home, Bertha Cathcart of Rock Hill, Dorothy C. Johnson of Fair Bluff, N.C., and Pearlie M. Williams of Charlotte; four sons, Willie Cathcart of the home, Crawford Cathcart of Rock Hill, Ronnie Cathcart and Leander Cathcart of Charlotte; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at New Zion Baptist Church.

G. Harvey Coates Jr.

LANCASTER - Mr. G. Harvey Coates Jr., 77, of 610 Davis St. died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at University Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Miller officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kershaw County, Mr. Coates is the son of the late Mr. Gabriel Harvey Coates and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cauthen Coates. Mr. Coates was a retired Lieutenant with the State Law Enforcement Division, a Mason with the Barron Masonic Lodge No. 261, a Shriner with the Hejaz Temple and a member of University Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Nellie Dinkins Coates of the home; two daughters, Brenda Coates Broach of Lancaster and Vicky Coates Crabtree of Mathews; his sister, Henrietta C. Phillips of Lancaster; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster.

Dora Davis

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Dora Ann "Dot" Bradley Davis, 58, of 1057 Flint Hill St. died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late Charlie Bradley and Annie Mae Heath Bradley. She was a 1958 graduate of Emmett Scott High School and a 1961 graduate of Clinton Junior College. She was retired from Bell-Atlantic in Washington after 26 years service.

Surviving are two sisters, Marion Nelson and Cora Hinton, both of Rock Hill; four stepchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Flint Hill Baptist Church and at other times at home.

Jacqueline Love

YORK - Ms. Jacqueline Lavonne Love, 32, of 103 Autumn Place died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Galilee Baptist Chuch in York, with the Rev. Charles Ashley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body may be viewed from 5 to 7 tonight at Wright Funeral Home.

Marguerite Gibson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Marguerite "Peggy" Branigan Gibson, 67, of 2471 Gibson St. died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church, with the Rev. William Pentis and Deacon Jim Hyland officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Gibson was a daughter of the late William P. Branigan and Charlotte Laurey Branigan. She was a lifelong member of St. Anne Catholic Church. She served on the Parish Council and St. Martha's Study Group. She also was the ladies craft group leader and quilted and sewed.

Surviving are her husband, Bobby Glenn Gibson Sr.; five sons, Bobby "Budda" G. Gibson Jr., John B. Gibson, Stephen "Steve" T. Gibson and Joseph "Joe" C. Gibson, all of Rock Hill, and James "Jamie" E. Gibson of Boiling Springs; two daughters, Teri G. McAllister and Linda G. Becknell, both of Rock Hill; her brother, Daniel "Danny" R. Branigan of Rock Hill; two sisters, Pat Branigan-Jonas of Rock Hill and Suzanne B. Davison of Kings Mountain, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Sarah Harris

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Sarah Frances Giles Harris, 56, formerly of Fort Mill, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Autumn Care Nursing Home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Fort Mill Church of God, with the Rev. David Kemp officiating. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery.

Mrs. Harris was a daughter of Samuel A. Giles of Fort Mill and the late Theda T. Giles. She was a lifetime member of the Fort Mill Church of God. She was a former employee of Springs Industries.

Surviving in addition to her father are her son, Billy Harris of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three brothers, Donald Giles and L.D. Giles, both of Fort Mill, and Ernest Giles Sr. of Lancaster; and two sisters, Doris Hubbard of Fort Mill and Vallaree Backwell of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Fort Mill Church of God.

Pearl Horton

LANCASTER - Mrs. Pearl Cooper Horton, 82, of 357 Brooklyn Ave. died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at 5218 Stoneboro Road in Heath Springs.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lancaster Church of God, with the Revs. Lacy Jones, James Chappel and Marvin Tennant officiating. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Andrews, Mrs. Horton was the daughter of the late Mr. John Willie Cooper and Mrs. Mary Henry Cooper Cooper. She was the widow of the late Mr. L.C. Horton. Mrs. Horton retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Lancaster Church of God.

Surviving are her two sons, Mr. Charles Wayne Horton of Lancaster and Mr. William Howard "Dub" Horton of Maggie Valley, N.C.; his daughter, Mrs. Joy Ann Hudson of Kannapolis; seven grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster.
