Angus McCollum

FLORENCE - Mr. Angus Leroy "Roy" McCollum of Florence died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at a Florence hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Pietla officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

A native of Olanta, Mr. McCollum was a son of the late Angus Leroy McCollum and Cora Ham McCollum. His adoptive parents were the late Eugene Travis McCollum and Estelle Crumpton McCollum. He was a retired Scout Executive and served in Occoneechee County in Raleigh, N.C., and served as district executive in Sanford, Siler City and Fayette-ville in North Carolina. He served as field director, finance director and administrative assistant in Raleigh. He also served as Scout Executive of the Pinellas Area Council in St. Petersburg, Fla., before becoming Scout Executive in Florence in 1971. He retired in 1986. He was a member of the Lion's Club, Rotary, Kiwanis, Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Florence Golden "K" Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the Christian Family Class.

Surviving are his wife, Nell Lee McCollum; two daughters, Linda Downs of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jeannie Marion of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 87, Florence, SC 29503.

The family will receive friends at home.

Mary Roseboro

BLACKSTOCK -"Mrs. Mary E. Jordan Roseboro, 86, of 4122 Turkey Creek Road died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be noon Saturday at Weeping Mary Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Rice officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A daughter of the late Daniel Jordan and Mattie Cunningham, Mrs. Roseboro was a member of the Daughters of Zion and a housewife.

Surviving are her son, Willie E. Roseboro of the home; four daughters, Remattie Ophelia Suber of Detroit, Mary Lee Smalls of Winnsboro, Gloria Ruth Gentry of Washington and Josephine Evans of Corona, N.Y.; three sisters, Rosa L. Archie and Margaret A. Dingle, both of High Point, N.C., and Willie Mae Canty of Rock Hill; two brothers, Roland Jordan of Charleston and Johnny Vincent Jordan of High Point; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home is in charge.

Lena Slagle

FORT MILL - Mrs. Lena Ward Slagle, 80, of Fort Mill died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Unity Cemetery, with the Revs. Robert Cook and Scott Gibson officiating.

A native of Brunswick County, N.C., Mrs. Slagle was a daughter of the late Memory Ward and Deltie Ward. She was the widow of Bob Slagle. She was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene in Fort Mill.

Surviving are her son, Bill Slagle of Elloree; her daughter, Kitty S. Moore of Fort Mill; two sisters, Vinnie Ward of Nakina, N.C., and Nevale W. Little of Hayes, Va.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Fort Mill Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene building fund, 109 Harris St., Fort Mill, SC 29715.

Charles Tindal

FLAT ROCK, N.C. - Mr. Charles Harvey Tindal, 65, of Flat Rock died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. James Episcopal Church, with the Rt. Rev. William H. Folwell and the Rev. H. Alexander Viola officiating. Committal will be at St. James Church Memorial Gardens and at a later date at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke Memorial Gardens.

A native of Charleston, Mr. Tindal was a son of W. Furman Tindal of Rock Hill and the late Margaret Tindal. Mr. Tindal was a graduate of The Citadel and member of St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville, N.C., and a past member of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Orlando, Fla.

While in Florida, he served as chief executive officer for Col-Ins-Co. and Palmer Electric before his retirement. He also served as past president of the Electronic Representative Association and as an active layman on the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida. Mr. Tindal was most recently active with Interfaith Assistance Ministry and as president of the board of directors of the Kenmure Club, where he was honored as Man of the Year 1999.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Frances Tindal; his son C. Mark Tindal of Asheville, N.C.; his daughter, Traci L. Tindal of Orlando, Fla.; his brother, Tracy Tindal of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive at Stillwell Hall after the service.

Joe Caldwell

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Joe Lewis Caldwell, 56, of the Pearidge community died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Pine Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. J.A. McFarlan officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Great Falls, Mr. Caldwell was a of son of the late Hattie Witherspoon and John Perry. He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the Trustee Board and a choir leader.

Surviving are four sons, Robin R. Caldwell of Long Island, N.Y., Joseph F. Caldwell of Great Falls, Kendall L. Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lamont Walls of Charlotte; his stepson, Terrell Hutchison of Great Falls; three daughters, Felisa M. Mathis of Winnsboro, Adoria S. Hutchison of Great Falls, and Natarsha N. Mack of Lancaster; two sisters, Bernice Culp and Mae Sue Barber, both of Great Falls; his stepsister, Charlotte Barnes of Baltimore; three brothers, Michael Caldwell, Richard Witherspoon and Albert Witherspoon, all of Great Falls; his stepbrother, Joe B. Perry of Salisbury, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and his special friend, Barbara Hutchison of Great Falls.

Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. today at Washington Funeral home.

Robert Caldwell

BLACKSTOCK - Mr. Robert Lee "Jigaboo" Caldwell, 66, of 4835 Tanglewood Road died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Loving Charity Baptist Church, with the Rev. W. J. Baxter officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Caldwell was a son of the late B. J. Hicklin and Ethel Hayes. He was a member of the Loving Charity Baptist Church. He attended Chester County public schools and was retired from R. A. Darby Welldrilling Co.

Surviving are his wife, Dora Lee Caldwell; four daughters, Janie Walls of Blackstock, and Patricia A. Hayes, Sadie Johnson and Esther Squirewell, all of Great Falls; eleven brothers, J. W. Hayes of Lancaster, the Rev. Moses Hayes of Richburg, Roosevelt Hayes of Rock Hill, Sammie Hayes of Atlanta, Charles Hayes of Chester, James Robert Hicklin of South Gate, Calif., Leroy Hicklin, Larry Hicklin and Joseph Hicklin, all of Compton, Calif., and Paul Hicklin and Lewis Hicklin, both of Great Falls; six sisters, Susie Hayes and Alice Crockett, both of Rock Hill, Bobbie J. Hayes of Chester, Mary McClinton and Rematta Douglas, both of Great Falls and Bertha Coleman of Los Angeles; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home. The body may be viewed from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Kings Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester and from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kings Funeral Home, Great Falls Chapel, 2367 Douglas Road.

Ira Cathcart

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ira Cathcart, 89, of 3862 Landon Lane died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at New Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. E.E. Vance officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Cathcart was a son of the late Lawson Cathcart and Fannie Cathcart. He was the widow of Janie Douglas Cathcart. He was a retired custodian from Winthrop University and was retired from Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. He attended the York County public schools. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, where he was a member of the hymn choir.

Surviving are four daughters, Margarie Cathcart of the home, Bertha Cathcart of Rock Hill, Dorothy C. Johnson of Fair Bluff, N.C., and Pearlie M. Williams of Charlotte; four sons, Willie Cathcart of the home, Crawford Cathcart of Rock Hill, Ronnie Cathcart and Leander Cathcart of Charlotte; his sister, Carrie Fields of Buffalo, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at New Zion Baptist Church.

Sally Davis

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sally Mae Davis, 62, of 628 Izard St. died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at By Faith Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. Jacob Chisholm III officiating and the Revs. Persell Ross Jr. and Herbert C. Crump assisting. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery.

A native of Union County, N.C., Mrs. Davis was a daughter of Jahue Tillman of Hartsville, Conn., and the late Janie B. Lowery. She was retired from Klear Knit as a seamstress. She attended the Union County schools and was an original member of the Davis Singers of Rock Hill.

Surviving in addition to her father are her husband, Raymond Davis of Lancaster County; her son, Timothy Davis of Lancaster; her daughter, Kim Davis Lowery of the home; two brothers, Joseph Tillman and Jahue Tillman Jr., both of New Haven, Conn.; two sisters, Joyner Tillman of Waterbury, Conn., and Barbara Tillman of California; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 7 tonight at Parker Funeral Home.

James Dickerson

ROCK HILL - Mr. James "Capp" Dickerson of 838 Crest St. died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Chester, with the Rev. W.W. Thompson officiating and the Revs. L.L. Robertson, Ernest Sisk, Georgette Boulware and LaTonya Boyd assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Dickerson graduated from the Chester County public schools and attended Friendship Junior College. He was a veteran and was self employed as a contractor and painter.

Surviving are his wife, Maggie Thompson of Rock Hill; three sons, James Dickerson Jr. and John Willie Dickerson, both of Chester, and Rudy Dickerson of Rock Hill; his daughter, Regina Barber of Rock Hill; two sisters, Exie D. Thomspon of Chester and Mary D. Talford of New York; 20 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Regina Barber, 570 Hillside Drive, Rock Hill, and his son, John Willie Dickerson, 2828 James F. Wherry Road, Chester.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester.

The body will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Lillian England

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Lillian Frances Carroll England of 4118 Lesslie Highway died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at The Oratory, with the Revs. Joseph Wahl and David Valtierra officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Washington, Mrs. England was a daughter of the late Francis Sellman Carroll and Suselle Elgin Carroll. She was the widow of James E. England Sr.

Mrs. England was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Washington and worked at The Oratory from 1952 to 1993 as secretary and office manager.

She was president of the South Carolina Council of Catholic Women in 1972. She was past president of The Deanery for the South Carolina Council of Catholic Women and the St. Anne Women's Guild. Mrs. England was named Woman of the Year in 1965 by the South Carolina Council of Catholic Women. She was a former member of St. Anne Catholic Church and was a current member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. James E. England Jr. of Chapin and Robert Matthew England of Rock Hill; her daughter, Barbara England Wallace of Catawba; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 today at Newman Hall at The Oratory and at other times at the home of Matthew England, 1979 High Pines Road, Rock Hill.

Marguerite Gibson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Marguerite "Peggy" Branigan Gibson, 67, of 2471 Gibson St. died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at St. Anne Catholic Church, with the Rev. William Pentis and Deacon Jim Hyland officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Gibson was a daughter of the late William P. Branigan and Charlotte Laurey Branigan. She was a lifelong member of St. Anne Catholic Church. She served on the Parish Council and St. Martha's Study Group. She also was the ladies' craft group leader and enjoyed quilting and sewing.

Surviving are her husband, Bobby Glenn Gibson Sr.; five sons, Bobby "Bubba" Gibson Jr., John B. Gibson, Stephen "Steve" Gibson and Joseph "Joe" Gibson, all of Rock Hill, and James "Jamie" Gibson of Boiling Springs; two daughters, Teri G. McAllister and Linda G. Becknell, both of Rock Hill; her brother, Daniel "Danny" Branigan of Rock Hill; two sisters, Pat Branigan-Jonas of Rock Hill and Suzanne B. Davison of Kings Mountain, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

Ira Haire

LANCASTER - Mr. Ira Haire, 73, of 2559 Charlotte Highway died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Eastside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joel Rhyner and the Rev. Dr. Billy Boone officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Haire was a son of the late Howard Plyler and Hennie Hair Plyler. He was retired from Springs Industries Lancaster Plant. He was member of Eastside Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Bessie Crook Haire; two sons, James A. Haire and Charles E. Haire, both of Lancaster; two sisters, Marcene Gainey of Lancaster and Eula Mae Williford of Rock Hill; two brothers, Ernest Ray Haire and Bobby Eugene Haire, both of Lancaster; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Lillian Itkin

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Lillian Gutter Itkin, 99, formerly of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Beverly Health Care Center.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Sunday at Forest Hills Cemetery, with Rabbi Jessica Spitalnic officiating.

A native of Poland, Mrs. Itkin was employed in the garment manufacturing industry.

Surviving are her husband, Max Itkin of Fort Mill; her son, Alvin Itkin of Columbia; her daughter, Elaine Itkin of New York; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
