Everett D. "Pop" Koon
December 29, 2003

Everett D. ”Pop” Koon, 76, of 315 Sid Bickley Road, Chapin died Monday, December 29, 2003, at Providence North East Hospital in Columbia.
Mr. Koon was born on June 20, 1927 in Newberry County, a son of the late Ira and Norvice Bishop Koon. He was an Army veteran of World II and was a retired employee of McCullough Sheet Metals Company. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, a member of the AARP, Lunch Bunch at Crooked Creek and a life member of V. F. W. Post 8069.
Mr. Koon was twice married, first to the late Minnie Lou Suber Koon and second to Katherine Bickley Koon.
He is survived by his wife of the home; a daughter, Lou K. Koon of Little Mountain; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry Koon of Pomaria and Wayne and Geraldine Koon of Little Mountain; six step-daughters, Edith Leaphart of Batesburg, Becky McCartha and Mary Coltrane, of Chapin, Ann Summer of Little Mountain, Verna Sawyer of Columbia and Debra Slagle of Brandon, FL; three step-sons, O’Neal Bickley, Donnie Bickley, and Ronnie Bickley all of Chapin; two foster children, Matthew Havird and Michael Havird, both of Little Mountain; four grandchildren, Dennis Koon, Barron Meetze, and Sonya Koon, all of Little Mountain and Melissa Adair of Simpsonville; two great-grandchildren; twenty four step-grandchildren and twenty step-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a step-son, David Bickley.
Graveside funeral services for Everett D. Koon will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Pomaria by the Rev. Steve Jackson.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 P. M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.
Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 209 New Hope Road, Pomaria, SC 29126.

Michael O. Amick
December 29, 2003

Michael O. Amick, 46, of 1107 Dreher Island Road, Chapin, died Monday, December 29, 2003 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Amick was born on July 22, 1957 in Columbia. He was a son of Katie Meetze Amick Wilson of West Columbia and the late Ralph M. Amick. He was an Air Force veteran of the Gulf War and he was an employee of Wal-Mart in Newberry.
Mr. Amick is survived by his mother of West Columbia; two sons, Jonathan Oneal Amick and Christopher Paul Amick both of Phoenix AZ; a sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and Jerry Frick of Chapin; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Jean Amick of Winnsboro; and his fiancée, Mary Frick and her two children, Brad and Justin Shealy of Chapin. He was predeceased by his foster parents, Peter and Marion Datichy.
Funeral services for Michael O. Amick will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Lybrand Cemetery in West Columbia.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin.The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Frick, 1107 Dreher Island Road, Chapin.

Claude B. Foster, Jr.
December 18, 2003

Claude B. Foster, Jr., 75, of 3710 Werts Road, Silverstreet, died Wednesday, December 18, 2003 at Ridgeway Health Care Center.
Mr. Foster was born on July 18, 1928 in Spartanburg County, a son of the late Claude R. and Elizabeth Nelson Foster. He was a retired farmer.
Mr. Foster is survived by his wife, Earlene Moates Foster of the home; three daughters, Ellen L. F. Wilson of Silverstreet, Mary F. Chapman and Betty Jane Foster, both of Newberry; a son, Claude L. Foster of Silverstreet; a sister, Estelle Livingston of Newberry; two grandsons, James O. Wilson and Glenn E. Wilson, both of Anderson.
Memorial services for Claude B. Foster, Jr. will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Alma Gamble Smith
December 16, 2003

Alma Gamble Smith, 85, formerly of Newberry, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at the Lexington Medical Center Extended Care.
Mrs. Smith was born on June 24, 1918 in Hickory, NC, a daughter of the late Annie Mae Gamble. She is survived by a nephew and his wife, Michael and Linda Doss and a great nephew, Michael Doss, Jr. all of Saluda.
Funeral services for Alma Smith will be conducted at 4:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. David Poole, 308 South Jennings St., Saluda.

Virgil Hans Ruff
December 19, 2003

Virgil Hans Ruff, age 88, of 424 N. Wheeler Ave., Prosperity, died Friday, December 19, 2003 at White Oak Manor
Mr. Ruff was born on January 21, 1915 in Prosperity, a son of the late William Foster and Mary Elizabeth Stockman Ruff. He was the last surviving member of his family.
Mr. Ruff was a graduate of Prosperity High School, Class of 1933 and a graduate of Newberry College, Class of 1937. He taught school in the upstate and also the lower state.
In 1942 he volunteered for service in the Navy during WWII. From Columbia he was sent to Annapolis for Officers Training. From there he continued his officers training at the University of Illinois at Champlaine Urbana.
From there he was sent to a port in Texas . He and other Lieutenant officers went to England on a LCI by way of Bermuda. He was then in the Atlantic Theater under Admiral Sabin. He and two other officers transported soldiers to the Mediterranean area – North Africa, Sicily, Borneo, and Italy. While his ship was docked at Italy, another LCI docked next to their ship was torpedoed. After he served in the Mediterranean area, he was given leave for two weeks, then left from San Francisco on a LST and served in the Pacific Theater on various islands.
He was honorably discharged from the Navy in December of 1945. At this time he married Martha Staley. They had one son, William Joseph Ruff who resides in Indianapolis, IN.
He taught at Brookland-Cayce School in Lexington County and worked for the Veterans Administration.
He lived in Illinois for 35 years. While there he served as Post Master at Modesto, IL. until his retirement in 1981. In 1968 he married Willie Floyd Ruff widow of his youngest brother, Julian Ruff who died in 1964.
Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved back to South Carolina, in a home in Prosperity. While there he served on the Governor’s Committee to help the needy and for persons who needed disability because of their work.
He was a member of the Civitan Club, the Retired Teachers Association, Wightman United Methodist Church, where he served on the financial committee, taught in the Frances Asbury Adult Class and in the Older Adult Class. Also, he served as church school and church treasurer and teacher at the Modesto United Methodist Church in Modesto, IL. .
He has lived through many illnesses since 1994 always courageously trying hard to overcome each of them and be able to walk with his walker.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Julian Duane Ruff, Marvin Ruff, Bertha Ruff, Harold Ruff, Geraldine Ruff, Myrtle Ruff, Raymond Ruff, and Isadore Ruff.
Mr. Ruff is survived by his wife, Willie Floyd Ruff, of the home and his son, William Joseph Ruff of Indianapolis, IN,
Funeral services for Virgil Hans Ruff will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Sunday at Wightman United Methodist Church by the Rev. Eddie Taylor. Interment will be at Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Wightman United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 376, Prosperity, SC 29127.
Active pallbearers will be Glenn Hamm, Raymond Ruff, Harold Ruff, Jake Amick, John Reuben Floyd,Jr., Gaston Floyd, Yancy Floyd, Lloyd Cousins, and Floyd Cousins.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Wightman United Methodist Women and the Wightman Adult Sunday School Classes who faithfully brought VCR tapes to our home weekly to keep us up with church news and to allow us to worship with our church family from home.

Rose Bodie Gatlin
December 19, 2003

Rose Bodie Gatlin, 82, widow of L.E. “Bill” Gatlin, Jr., died Friday, December 19, 2003 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Gatlin was born on November 26, 1921 in Saluda County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Lula Shaw Bodie. She was a member of O’Neal St. United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and the Nan Layton Circle.
Mrs. Gatlin is survived by two sons L.E. “Ed” Gatlin, III of Clemson and Milton A. Gatlin of Greer; six grandchildren, Drew Gatlin, Sanders Gatlin, Miranda Gatlin, Angie Taylor, Luke Gatlin, and Rosemary Arthur; and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Rose Bodie Gatlin will be conducted at 3:30 P.M. Sunday at O’Neal St. United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kem Thomas. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be to made to O’Neal St. United Methodist Church, 501 O’Neal St., Newberry SC 29108.

Dallas H. Willingham, Sr.
December 14, 2003

Dallas H. Willingham, Sr., 80, of Newberry, died Sunday, December 14, 2003 at the J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Mr. Willingham was born in Newberry County, a son of the late Obed H. and Etta Burton Willingham. He retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of Hospital Corpsman First Class after 22 and one half years of service, having served in both WW II and the Korean War. He was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church and the S.C. Law Enforcement Officers Association. He was the Chief of Police in Prosperity for six years and was with the Newberry City Police Department for 10 years and retired from the V.C. Summer Plant.
Mr. Willingham is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Suggs Willingham of Newberry; two daughters and a son-in-law, Merry Jo and Dr. Tim Stafford of Irmo and Virginia Wheeler of Greenville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dallas H. Jr. and Joan Willingham of Newberry and James H. and Susan Willingham of Prosperity; six grandchildren, Ali, Bryan, Joby, Ginny, Linda Jo, and Cathy; and five great-grandchildren, David, Caroline, Lexi, Taylor, and Cody. He was predeceased by three brothers, Burton Willingham, Harry W. Willingham, and Andrew Willingham.
Funeral service Dallas H. Willingham will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Buck Malcolm.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Newberry County Law Enforcement Association, 1507 Nance Street, Newberry, SC 29108.

Dorothy Lollis Metts
December 11, 2003

Dorothy Lollis Metts, 55, of 1616 Bodie Street, Newberry, wife of Charles O. Metts, died Thursday, December 11, 2003 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Metts was born in Prosperity, a daughter of Clarice Trammell Lollis and the late James H. Lollis.
Beside her husband and mother, she is survived by three sisters, Nora Drew of Bethune, Betty Jean Conard of Fountain Inn, and Shirley May Lollis of Newberry; one brother, John H. Lollis of Newberry.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Wednesday in Baxter Cemetery.
