Willie Mae Barnette

YORK - Mrs. Willie Mae Hemphill Barnette, 79, of 2140 Old Son Lowery Road died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. today at New Home AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Darial Jackson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Barnette was a daughter of the late Edward Hemphill and Lenora Dixon Hemphill. She was a member of New Home AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the hymn choir, the usher board and the missionary circle and was secretary of the Willing Workers #1. She also was a member of the White Hill chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She retired in 1998 and moved to the area from New York.

Surviving are three sons, Frontis Hemphill and Eric Barnette, both of York, and Marvin Hemphill of Gastonia, N.C.; her brother, Emmitt Hemphill of York; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 3:30 p.m. today at New Home AME Zion Church, when Eastern rites will be given.

Wright Funeral Home is in charge.

Tracy Brandon

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Mr. Tracy Lynn Brandon, 41, of 118 Prim Lane died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bratton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Olivene Martin officiating and the Rev. Clifford Cochran assisting. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.

A native of York, Mr. Brandon was a son of the late Robert Brandon and Glee Deal Brandon. He was an electrician.

Surviving are his son, Tracy Lynn Brandon Jr. of Rock Hill; his brother, Steven Brandon of York; five sisters, Debra Brandon Hoyle, Kimberly Brandon Huffstetler and Angela B. Phillips-McCoy, all of York, Peggy Brandon Jordon of Myrtle Beach and Kathy Brandon Porter of the home; three stepbrothers, Larry Childers and Michael Childers, both of York and Joey Childers of Hickory Grove; his stepsister, Pat Krepps of York; his stepmother, Ruth Brandon of York; and his companion, Roxanne Norman of the home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Robert Caldwell

BLACKSTOCK - Mr. Robert Lee "Jigaboo" Caldwell, 66, of 4835 Tanglewood Road died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Loving Charity Baptist Church, with the Rev. W.J. Baxter officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Caldwell was a son of the late B.J. Hicklin and Ethel Hayes. He was a member of Loving Charity Baptist Church. He attended Chester County public schools and was retired from R.A. Darby Welldrilling Co.

Surviving are his wife, Dora Lee Caldwell; his daughter, Janie Walls, of Blackstock; his stepdaughters, Patricia A. Hayes, Sadie Johnson and Esther Squirewell, all of Great Falls; 11 brothers, J.W. Hayes of Lancaster, the Rev. Moses Hayes of Richburg, Roosevelt Hayes of Rock Hill, Sammie Hayes of Atlanta, Charles Hayes of Chester, James Robert Hicklin of South Gate, Calif., Leroy Hicklin, Larry Hicklin and Joseph Hicklin, all of Compton, Calif., and Paul Hicklin and Lewis Hicklin, both of Great Falls; six sisters, Susie Hayes and Alice Crockett, both of Rock Hill, Bobbie J. Hayes, of Chester, Mary McClinton and Rematta Douglas, both of Great Falls and Bertha Coleman of Los Angeles; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home. The body may be viewed from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Kings Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester and from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kings Funeral Home, Great Falls Chapel, 2367 Douglas Road.

Velma Childers

LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Mrs. Velma Smith Childers, 83, of 430 Triple H. Lane died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital in Hickory, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hickory Grove Church of God, with the Revs. Fred Helms Jr., David Brown, Roger Nix and James Nicholson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Buncombe County, N.C., Mrs. Childers was a daughter of the late Thomas A. Smith and Ressie Bell Smith. She worked as a winder in the textile industry, where she retired after 20 years from Huntleys of York.

She was the widow of the late Noah Childers.

Surviving are her son, Thomas "Buster" Childers of Sharon; four daughters, Shirley Hawkins and Marjorie Blackwelder, both of York, Diane Martin, of Blacksburg and Dot Helms of Lincolnton; her sister, Virginia Anderson of Clover; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and his great-great grandchild.

The family is being served by Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton and Bratton Funeral Home in York.

The family will receive friends Tuesday night at the home of Thomas "Buster" Childers, 3016 Shannon St., Sharon, where the body will be taken Tuesday and remain until the funeral.

Janie Clifton

RICHBURG - Mrs. Janie R. Clifton, 67, of 4021 Wylies Mill Road died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Vernon AME Zion Church, with the Rev. J.E. Johnson officiating. Burial follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Clifton was a member of Mount Vernon AME Zion Church. She attended public schools in Chester County and was a homemaker. She was a daughter of the late Willie Robinson and Lillie Robinson.

Surviving her husband, Willie F. "Jackie" Clifton; her son, Dennis J. Robinson of Chester; her brother James D. "J.D." Robinson of Edgemoor; her sister, Phyllis Hatcher of Edgemoor; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester. The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

James Dickerson

ROCK HILL - Mr. James "Capp" Dickerson, of 838 Crest St. died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. today at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Chester, with the Rev. W.W. Thompson officiating and the Revs. L.L. Robertson, Ernest Sisk, Georgette Boulware and LaTonya Boyd assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Dickerson graduated from the Chester County public schools and attended Friendship Junior College. He was a veteran and was self-employed as a contractor and painter.

Surviving are his wife, Maggie Thompson; three sons, James Dickerson Jr. and John Willie Dickerson, both of Chester and Rudy Dickerson of Rock Hill; his daughter, Regina Barber of Rock Hill; two sisters, Exie D. Thompson of Chester and Mary D. Talford of New York; 20 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Regina Barber, 570 Hillside Drive, Rock Hill, and his son, John Willie Dickerson, 2828 James F. Wherry Road, Chester.

Sarah Martin

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sarah Rosebud Hardin Martin, 75, of 1915 Ebenezer Road died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at West End Baptist Church, with the Revs. James Lowery and Mike Lowery officiating. Burial will follow in Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of Smyrna, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Furman D. Hardin and Fannie Bell Spencer Hardin. She was raised by her father and Amanda Westmoreland Hardin. She was the widow of the late William L. "Shorty" Martin.

Mrs. Martin was a member of West End Baptist Church. She served on the Rock Hill Housing Advisory Council, was a member of the Rock Hill Senior Citizen Band and worked in the York County Fair Exhibition Hall for years. She was a retired weaver in the textile industry.

Surviving are six sons, William Lester Martin Jr. of Hickory Grove, the Rev. Richard L. Martin of Clover, Kenneth A. Martin of Lesslie and D. Wayne Martin, Norris S. Martin and Bruce W. Martin, all of Rock Hill; two daughters, Hazel M. Adams and Helen M. Helms, both of Rock Hill; 25 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Kenneth "Kenny" Martin, 2508 Mosstree Court, Lesslie.

Silas Ray

GREENVILLE - Mr. Silas Lambert Ray, 82, of 2 Dinwiddle Drive, formerly of Rock Hill, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Westville Memorial Funeral Home in Greenville. Entombment will be at the Woodlawn Memorial Park C.M. Gaffney Mausoleum.

Mr. Ray was retired from S.C. Industries in Florence and also from Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. He was a member of New Testament Church.

Surviving are his wife, Eva Atkinson Ray; his son, Charles E. Ray of Darlington; two daughters, Norma Hussey of Marianna, Fla., and Evie Hatchett of Seneca; his brother, Alfred Ray of Hazelhurst, Ga.; three sisters, Beatrice Miller of Denton, Ga., and Catherine Hester and Marilyn Ray, both of Hazelhurst, Ga.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his great-great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the Westville Memorial Funeral Home.

William Ward Sr.

BELMONT, N.C. - William Jasper "Whitey" Ward Sr., 56, of Lakeshore Road in Denver, N.C., died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church in Charlotte. The body may be viewed for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.

A native of Mecklenburg County, N.C., Mr. Ward was a a son of the late Marvin N. Ward and Elsie L. Watkins Ward. He was supervisor for ATC Aftermarket Technology Corp., was a member of the American Legion Post No. 353, was a graduate of West Mecklenburg High School and was a Vietnam-era veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

Surviving are his wife, Patty Sullins Ward; three sons, Curtis Ward, Patrick Glover and William J. Ward Jr., all of Charlotte; three daughters, Cheri McAbee of Clover, and Susan Ward and Tricia Morris, both of Charlotte; his brother, Gary Ward Sr. of Alexis, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Crippled Children Burn Center, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

Frances Alfano

FORT MILL - Mrs. Frances Alfano, 89, of 2617 Trumpet Lane died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Mercy South Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wolfe Funeral Home with the Rev. David Kemp officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery in Rock Hill.

A native of Manhattan, N.Y., Mrs. Alfano was a daughter of the late Rocco Emma and Serafina Emma. She worked as a seamstress and church pianist for more than 35 years. She was the widow of Dick Campagna and Peer Alfano. She moved to Heritage USA in 1987. She was a member of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving are her daughter, Eleanor Campagna of Fort Mill; her stepson, Frank Alfano of Long Island, N.Y.; three stepdaughters, Marie Savarese of Long Island, and Santa Costa and Ester Buzzio, both of Italy; two sisters, Esther Meister of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Rose Morris of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 2617 Trumpet Drive, Fort Mill.

CHESTER - Mrs. Lena Ruth Miller Lee, 89, of 2817 Armenia Road died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Chester County Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Rick Mason and Fant Steele officiating. Burial will be at Armenia United Methodist Church cemetery.

Born in Darlington, Mrs. Lee was a daughter of the late Lawrence H. Miller and Lena James Miller. Mrs. Lee was retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Jeane Miller Lee of Chester; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Barron Funeral Home.

Rachel Hilderbrand

BISCOE, N.C. - Mrs. Rachel Faris Hilderbrand, 83, of 116 Mill St. died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at First Health Moore Regional Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Page Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Revs. David Beck and Lacy B. Frye officiating. Burial will be at Biscoe Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Hilderbrand was a homemaker.

Surviving are two sons, Harvey Coleman Hilderbrand of Gainesville, Fla., and Roger Eugene Hilderbrand of Marion; two daughters, Cathy H. Harris of Candor, N.C., and Tressia H. Bailey of Troy, N.C.; her sister, Virginia Neeland of Raleigh, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Phillips Funeral Home in Star, N.C.
