William Kirk

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. William S. Kirk, 82, of 2782 Rocky River Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill ARP Church, with the Revs. William Roberts and Brooks Walker officiating. Burial will be at Rich Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Kirk was a son of the late Billy Kirk and Minnie Reeves Kirk. He was the widower of his first wife, Vera Rowell Kirk. A retired farmer, he served on the board of directors for the Farm Bureau and the Lancaster County ASCA Board. He was a member of the local Cattlemen's Association and Fork Hill Masonic Lodge No. 316. He was a member of the American Legion for 50 years and a member of Pleasant Hill ARP Church, where he served as an elder and a trustee for many years. He served in the National Guard during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Kate Jones Kirk; his stepson, Douglas Lawing of Union; his stepdaughter, Judy Luke of Rock Hill; his brother, Boyce Kirk of Heath Springs; his sister, Eva Hammonds of Heath Springs; and five step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hartley Funeral Home in Lancaster.

Ruby Knight

FORT MILL - Mrs. Ruby Mae Craig Knight, 81, of 375 Sweetgum Drive died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Tanglewood Health Care Center in Ridgeway.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Pleasant Christ Church in New Ross, Ind., with the Rev. Ken Arnold officiating. Burial will be at New Ross Cemetery.

A native of Hillsdale, Ind., Mrs. Knight was a homemaker and the widow of Ralph Knight. She was a member of Mount Pleasant Christ Church.

Surviving are two sons, Gene Feather of Fort Mill and Steve Knight of Indianapolis, Ind.; her daughter, Valerie Sowers of Indianapolis; her sister, Elaine Craig of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home in Indianapolis.

J.L. Mackey

LANCASTER - Mr. J.L. Mackey, 75, of 2256 University Drive died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Taylors Grove Baptist church, with the Revs. Troy Leach and Ronald Boone officiating. Burial will be at the Taylors Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Union County, N.C., Mr. Mackey was a son of the late Stanley and Minnie Wolfe Mackey. He was a veteran of World War II.

Surviving are two sons, Keith Mackey and Jimmy Lewis Mackey, both of Lancaster; his sister, Emily Ray of Lancaster; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Keith Mackey, 2278 University Drive.

Walter Mackey

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Walter Fleece "Teen" Mackey, 88, of 2507 Twitty Mill Road died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Beaver Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Hammond officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Mackey was a son of the late Minor Canady and Effie Perry Mackey. A retired carpenter, Mr. Mackey was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are his brother, George P. Mackey of Rock Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw chapel.

Sarah Martin

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sarah Rosebud Hardin Martin, 75, of 1915 Ebenezer Road died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral, rescheduled from Tuesday, will be 2 p.m. today at West End Baptist Church, with the Revs. James Lowery and Mike Lowery officiating. Burial will follow in Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of Smyrna, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Furman D. Hardin and Fannie Bell Spencer Hardin. She was raised by her father and Amanda Westmoreland Hardin. She was the widow of the late William L. "Shorty" Martin.

Mrs. Martin was a member of West End Baptist Church. She served on the Rock Hill Housing Advisory Council, was a member of the Rock Hill Senior Citizen Band and worked in the York County Fair Exhibition Hall for years. She was a retired weaver in the textile industry. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda M. Owens.

Surviving are six sons, William Lester Martin Jr. of Hickory Grove, Richard L. Martin of Greenwood, Kenneth A. Martin of Lesslie and D. Wayne Martin, Norris S. Martin and Bruce W. Martin, all of Rock Hill; two daughters, Hazel M. Adams and Helen M. Helms, both of Rock Hill; 25 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the church before and after the service and at other times at the home of Kenneth "Kenny" Martin, 2508 Mosstree Court, Lesslie.

Memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church building fund, 1727 McConnells Highway, Rock Hill, SC 29732, or Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Naomi Morris

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Naomi Brazzell Morris, 44, of 462 Willowbrook Ave. died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Soles officiating.

A native of Columbia, Mrs. Morris was a daughter of Ruby Carter Wilson and the late Howard Brazzell. She was a member of Shield of Faith Family Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Ronald Morris; three sons, Ronald "Bubba" Brazzell of Fort Mill and Howard Eugene "Pockets" Morris and Michael Lee "Fat Back" Morris, both of Rock Hill; her daughter, Jean Bumgardner of Rock Hill; her brother, Edward "Bucky" Brazell of Rock Hill; four sisters, Shirley Phillips of Catawba, Rebecca Ann Martin of Flint, Mich., and Linda Thomason and Patsy Brazzell, both of Rock Hill; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at her mother, 3153 Lesslie Highway, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Shield of Faith Family Church, 2499 Firetower Road, Rock Hill.

Arrangements will be announced by Greene Funeral Home.

Da'Vetruis Price

CHESTER - Da'Vetruis Tyrique Price, the infant son of Crystal Ann Jennings and LaTerrance Price, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Sandy River Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her brother, Terrance Price; her maternal grandparents, Deloris and A.J. Jennings of Chester; and her paternal grandparents, Alice Price and Nathaniel Price of Chester.

The family will receive friends at 520 Third St., Chester.

Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road, Chester, is in charge.

Ernest Truesdale

KERSHAW - Mr. Ernest Lee Truesdale, 70, of 416 E. Richland St. died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw chapel, with his nephews, the Revs. Steve Truesdale and Billy Truesdale, officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Truesdale was a son of the late James Luther Truesdale and Sally Belle T. Truesdale. A retired insurance salesman, he was a member of Thorn Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Randall L. Truesdale of Rock Hill, Robert L. Adams of Mauldin and Jerry M. Adams of Columbia; three daughters, Sue Dease and Sandra Truesdale, both of Kershaw, and Rhonda Carnes of Adelphi, Md.; two brothers, L.D. Truesdale of Campobello and William Truesdale of Kershaw; his sister, Virginia Faulkenberry of Kershaw; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw chapel and at other times at the home of Sandra Truesdale, 118 Blackmon Circle, Kershaw.

Margaret Wade

CHESTER - Mrs. Margaret Dickson Wade, 84, of 5914 Woods Ferry Road died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at home.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilksburg Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. James Billings and Mr. Ansel Ashley officiating.

A native of Union County, Mrs. Wade was a daughter of the late James Dickson and Nellie Osborne Dickson. A homemaker, she was the widow of Roy W. Wade. Mrs. Wade was a graduate of Lockhart High School and attended Wilksburg Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Ann Hall of Chester; her brother, Osborne Dickson of Sharon; and her special friend, Gail Fuller of Chester.

The family will receive friends at 178 Harris St., Chester.

Barron Funeral home is in charge.

Harold Wass Jr.

LAKE WYLIE - Mr. Harold Stanley Wass Jr., 72, of 9 Holly Berry Woods, River Hills, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at River Hills Community Church, with the Rev. Bruce Jones officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Arlington, Mass., Mr. Wass was a son of the late Harold Stanley Wass Sr. and Helen Lockhart Wass. He was a 1950 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and retired from IRM Insurance of Charlotte. He was the author of "Sprinkler Hydraulics," a technical resource for sprinkler system design. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a Army veteran of the Korean conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Cherry Wass; his son, Allen S. Wass of Hudson, Ohio; his daughter, Susan H. Weathers of Charlotte; two sisters, Marjorie W. Prodo Brentwood, N.H., and Winifred W. Everett of Chatham, Mass.; and two grandchildren.

Rebecca Woods

YORK - Mrs. Rebecca Woods, 93, of 110 Valley Road died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today, rescheduled from Monday, at Wright Funeral Home Chapel, with Bishop Perry Huitt officiating. Burial will be at Uniondale Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Woods was a daughter of the late Rev. W.T. Boulware and Sonora Jamison Boulware. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness.

Surviving are three sisters, Annie L. Collins of Rock Hill, Annie Bell Roseboro of Sharon and Vessie Peterson of Washington, D.C.; her brother, Odell Boulware of Gastonia; 11 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 42 great-great-grandchildren.

Phillip Young

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Phillip James Young, 50, of Augusta died Saturday, Jan 22, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be noon today at Poteet Funeral Home, West Chapel in Augusta. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Young was a son of Henry H. Young Jr. and Dorothy L. Young of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Mr. Young was retired from Army, where he served in Vietnam and was a certified divemaster and paratrooper jump master. He was a member of the Westside Club, American Legion in Sacketts Harbor, N.Y., Veterans of Foreign Wars in Watertown, N.Y., and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Ramona V. Kalpokas; two sons, Paul Jonas Young and David Alexander Young, both of Augusta; four brothers, Henry H. Young III of Chester, Donald A. Young of Charlotte, Richard Young of Rhinemain, Germany, and John Young of Sarasota, Fla.; his sister, Susan Gadson of Sarasota, Fla.

The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. today at Poteet Funeral Home, 3686 Wheeler Road, Augusta.

Claude Chavis

McCOLL - Mr. Claude Whitford "Sarge" Chavis, 77, of 3515 Sarge Lane died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at the home of his daughter in Chester.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Feb. 6 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Marlboro County, with the Revs. Roger Crump and David Townsend officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Richmond County, N.C., Mr. Chavis was a son of the late Laurence Chavis and Blanche Grant Chavis. He was the widower of Lucile Trent Chavis. He served in the Army and retired as a master sergeant after 23 years. He landed at Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy and received two Bronze Stars, two Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts and numerous other awards during his service.

Surviving are three sons, Claude W. Chavis Jr. of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., George Chavis of McColl and Michael Chavis of Charlotte; four daughters, Sharon Stover of Rock Hill, Theresa Edwards of Chester, Shannon Chavis of Fort Lawn and Angela Guy of Charlotte; two brothers, Mickey Chavis of Rockingham and Ellis Chavis of Charlotte; three sisters, Gladys Skipper of Fayetteville and Betty Ellis and Ina Childers, both of Rockingham; 23 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 5 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Marlboro County and at other times at the home of Betty Ellis, 704 Juniper St., Rockingham.

Memorials may be made to Hospice, World War II Memorial or to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

Kathleen Flowe

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mrs. Kathleen Smith Flowe, 80, formerly of Charlotte, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Forsythe Hospital.

A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Forest Lawn East Cemetery.

A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Flowe was a daughter of the late John Smith and Alice Green Smith. She was the widow of George C. Flowe. She was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Louise Bratton of Clover and Gladys Collins of York.

The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hankins and Whittington Matthews Chapel, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive.
