Andrew Sanders

ROCK HILL - Mr. Andrew Sanders of 119 S. Jones St. died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Prospect Baptist Church, with the Rev. C.D. Montgomery officiating and Dr. W.E. Garrison delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow at Barber Memorial cemetery.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Sanders was the son of the late Ben Sanders Sr. and Florine Moss Sanders. He attended Emmet Scott High School and Friendship College School of Masonry.

Mr. Sanders served in the U.S. Army and was a self-employed masonry contractor. He was a member of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church, where he served in a number of positions. He also was a member of the Sons of Thunder Lodge No. 320.

Surviving are his wife, Inez Watson Sanders; four sons, Freddie Sanders of Fort Mill, Terry Andrew Sanders of Rock Hill and Mark Sanders and Charles Sanders; his daughter, Andrea Sanders of the home; three sisters, Irmogene Blake, Mary Hall of Rock Hill and Yvone Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; and two brothers, Ben Sanders Jr. of Rock Hill and Charles Sanders of Charlotte.

The body may be viewed from noon until the service on Thursday.

Clemons Funeral Home is in charge.

James Simpson

ROCK HILL -"Dr. James L. Simpson, 79, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Westminster Health Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Robert J. Robinson and Rev. Dr. Roy E. Beckham officiating. Burial will be at Union ARP Church cemetery in Richburg.

A native of Richburg, Dr. Simpson was a son of the late William Shaw Simpson Sr. and Susan McCrorey Simpson.

Dr. Simpson was the first physician in York, Chester and Lancaster counties to establish a practice of obstetrics and gynecology. He established his practice 1952 and was joined by Dr. William Francis Strait in 1959.

A 1938 graduate of Lewisville High School, Dr. Simpson received a B.S. degree from the University of South Carolina in 1942. He received his degree in medicine in 1946 from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Upon completion of his residency in 1952, he moved to Rock Hill with his wife, Miriam, and their daughter, Sally.

Dr. Simpson held memberships in a number of professional societies, including the York County Medical Society, the South Carolina Medical Association, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Medical Association, South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Diplomat American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Simpson was past president of the S.C. Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and also of the THEGOS, a society which he helped organize.

Dr. Simpson delivered the first baby born in the new Piedmont Medical Center on Feb. 19, 1983. He continued practicing obstetrics and gynecology until 1985, at which time he limited his practice to gynecology until his retirement in 1988.

In 1990, Dr. Simpson was the roastee at the York District Leadership dinner, a fund-raiser for the Palmetto Council Boy Scouts of America.

In January 1991, Dr. Simpson returned to practice when one of his partners, a reservist, was called to active duty in Saudi Arabia. He retired for the second time in 1995.

A member of the Union Association Reformed Presbyterian Church since early childhood, Dr. Simpson became a member of the First Association Reformed Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill in the early 1950s. There he served as an elder.

Dr. Simpson was invited to join the Rotary Club of Rock Hill shortly after coming to Rock Hill. In 1997, Dr. Simpson and his partner, Dr. Frank Strait, were honored by the Foundation of Rotary International as recipients of the Paul Harris Fellow Award.

Surviving are his wife, Miriam Ragan Simpson; three sons, James Leon "Jimmy" Simpson Jr., Abel Ragan Simpson and William Francis "Frank" Simpson, all of Rock Hill; his daughter, Sara Virginia "Sally" Simpson; his brother, William Shaw Simpson of Iva; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 1526 Alexander Road in Rock Hill.

Honorary pallbearers will be the elders of the First ARP Church and retired physicians.

Charlie Barber

FORT MILL - Mr. Charlie Q. Barber, 78, of 704 Sanders St. died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at United AME Zion church, with the Rev. Hicklen officiating. Burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery.

Mr. Barber was employed with Springs Industries, where he retired after 44 years. He was a member of the Golden Rule Lodge No. 102 of Fort Mill.

Surviving are his wife, Macie L. Barber of Fort Mill; his son, George Davis of Tega Cay; his brother, James Barber of Fort Mill; three sisters, Alice Bryant of Nashville, Tenn., Janee Nash of Fort Mill and Mattie Mackey of Fort Mill; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends form 6 to 7 tonight at United AME Zion Church.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Friday.

Parker Funeral Home in Rock Hill is in charge.

Julia Carr

MINT HILL, N.C. - Mrs. Julia Franklin Carr, 89, of Mint Hill died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be Friday at First Baptist Church of Matthews, N.C. Burial will be at Sharon Memorial Park.

A native of Orange County, N.C., Mrs. Carr was the widow of the Rev. Bryant Carr. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Matthews where she served in many capacities.

Surviving are her son, Dr. Bill Carr of Gainesville, Ga.; three daughters, Becky Echerd of Matthews, Carolyn Hollar of Mint Hill and Rachel Hood of Charlotte; her brother, Wiley Franklin of Asheville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McEwen Funeral Home, Mint Hill chapel.

James Craig Sr.

LANCASTER - Mr. James William Craig Sr., 87, of 1208 Grace Ave. died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce Craig officiating. Burial will be at Blackmon Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Craig was a son of the late George Craig and Sally Jane Lucas Craig. He was retired from Springs Indus-tries and was a member of Rich Hill Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Ruby Drye Craig; four sons, James W. "Billy" Craig Jr. and Walter H. Craig, both of Kershaw, Wade Craig of Orange-burg and George Arthur Craig of Lancaster; four daughters, Ruth Mahaffey, Judy Hinson and Jane Catoe, all of Lancaster, and Sadie Bozarth of Mount Holly, N.J.; two brothers, Clayton Craig of Ruby and Lewis Craig of Lancaster; three sisters, Ida Sweatt of Rockingham, N.C., Mary Gandy of Kershaw and Ethel Conner of White Springs, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Cynthia Hammond

McCONNELLS - Mrs. Cynthia M. Hammond, 63, of 350 Canadian Drive died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at York Funeral Home.

A native of Jordan, N.Y., Mrs. Hammond was a daughter of the late F.B. McKaig and Marguarite McKaig. A graduate of Miami University of Oxford, Ohio, Mrs. Hammond was a former school teacher.

Surviving are her husband, William G. Hammond; her son, Eric Ham-mond of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, Alan McKaig of Charlottesville, Va., and Burton McKaig and Jon McKaig, both of Springfield, Ohio; her sister, Marguarite Craner of Columbus, Ohio; and her grandson, Josh Hammond of Germany.

Donald Harrison

ROCK HILL - Mr. Donald Edward Harrison, 82, of 207 N. Jones Ave. died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Evangel Temple Assembly of God in Great Falls, with the Revs. Mike Sollars and Walker Clark officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Great Falls.

A native of Manchester, Ga., Mr. Harrison was a son of the late Clarence Harrison and Dovie Moore Harrison. He was a retired supervisor from J.P. Stevens Co. He was a member of Evangel Temple Assembly of God and attended school in Fulton County, Ga.

Surviving are his wife, Edna N. Harrison; two sons, Jerry Harrison of Rock Hill and Donnie Hugh Harrison of Columbia; his daughter, Elaine Best of Greenville; his brother, Henry Harrison of Great Falls; two sisters, Mary Bailey of Lancaster and Lillian Christopher of Midland, Texas; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Reath Hinson

LANCASTER - Mrs. Reath Marie Harris Hinson, 91, of Lancaster died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Drs. Harold Owens and Edward Wade officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Hinson was a daughter of the late Benjamin Harris and Cora Blackmon Harris. She was the widow of William V. Hinson. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She was known as "Thinner Jacket" with the Red Rose CB Club.

Surviving are her daughter, Billie Steele of Lancaster; her son, Jerry B. Hinson Sr. of Lancaster; her sister, Edna Clyburn of Kershaw; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church at other times at the home of Susan Boatwright, 2572 Dudley Steele Road, Lancaster.

Neal Jennings

INDIAN LAND - Mr. Albert Neal Jennings, 85, of 9139 Possum Hollow Road died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Higher Ground Church, with the Rev. Steve Jacks and Benny Green officiating. Burial will be at Indian Land Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Jennings was a son of the late Lonnie Banks and Addie Mary Felts Jennings. He served in the National Guard and was retired from Springs Industries after 44 years service. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Moore Jennings; two sons, Ronnie B. Jennings and James R. Jennings, both of Indian Land; three daughters, Lila Merritt, Mary Neal Perkins and Nancy St. Clair, all of Indian Land; his brother, John Wesley Jennings of Fort Mill; his sister, Lib Rowell of Fort Mill; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Nancy St. Clair, 9123 Possum Hollow road, Fort Mill.

Norma Love

SPARTANBURG - Mrs. Norma Keels Humphries Love, 79, of 312 Essex Ridge Road died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at home.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Presbyterian Church, Walnut Grove Road in Roebuck.

A native of of Oconee County, Mrs. Love was a daughter of the late Charles Hilliard Humphries Sr. and Olive Keels Maxwell Humphries. She was a retired teacher with Oconee County school district with 24 years service. She was a member of Mount Calvary Presbyterian Church. She served as an elder at Walhalla Presbyterian Church and was an honorary member of the Presbyterian Women's Organization. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Surviving are her husband, R.E. "Bob" Love Jr.; her son, Robert Maxwell Love of Greenville; two daughters, Elizabeth Love Thrailkill of Roebuck and Sue Kendrick Love of Rock Hill; her brother, George Badger Humphries of Johnston; her sister, Elaine Humphries Paschal of Portland, Ore.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at Davenport Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Elizabeth Thrailkill, 850 Hobbysville Road, Roebuck.

Martha Moore

LAURENS - Miss Martha Frances Moore, 86, of 1 Martha Franks Drive, formerly of Union, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Laurens County Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

A native of Ninety Six, Miss Moore was a daughter of the late Rev. John Robert Moore and Fannie Lowery Moore. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she had been a member of the adult choir and worked in the preschool Sunday school department and the children's choirs. She also served in many capacities in the Baptist Women's Missionary Union. She was a 1934 graduate of Greenville Women's College of Furman University. She worked as a bookkeeper at Union Dry Cleaning and Steam Laundry Co. for 40 years. She helped found the Meals on Wheels program of Union County and served a volunteer chairperson.

Surviving are four cousins including Margaret L. Hoyt of McConnells.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Holcombe Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Janet Moss

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Janet Ledbetter Moss, 80, of 3464 Penshurst Road died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rick Sturgis officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Moss was a son of the late John Ledbetter and Caroline Wooten Ledbetter. She was the widow of Ben Moss. She was a member of the Four Square Gospel Church and retired from Springs Industries with 35 years service.

Surviving are three daughters, Patricia D. Moss of Temple, Ga., Barbara M. Finley of Raleigh, N.C., and Sandra M. Ludlam of Rock Hill; her caregiver, Karen Merritt of Fort Mill; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Sandra Ludlam, 3463 Penshurst Road, Rock Hill.
