ROCK HILL - Mr. C.H. "Slim" Deas, 73, of 5654 Chadwick Court died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Greene Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. John Powell officiating.

A native of Natchez, Miss., Mr. Deas was a son of the late William H. Deas and Alma Renfrow Deas. He retired from being supervisor of the Martin Marietta Co. after 29 years service.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Cockerham Deas; two sons, Bobby R. Deas of Huntersville, N.C. and Robert W. Deas of Mississippi; three daughters, Jean Deas Griffin of Columbia, Juanita D. Hancock and Sheila D. Walters, both of Sandersville, Miss.; four brothers, Dudley Deas of Los Gatos, Calif., Isaac Willis of California, Danny Willis and Bobby Willis, both of Jena, La.; two sisters, Bonnie Deas Short of Simi Valley, Calif., and Dorothy Ann Bradley of Jena; 12 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 3 p.m. Sunday and after the service and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Walter Ellis

ROCK HILL - Mr. Walter Boone "Walt" Ellis, 64, of 169 Westerwood Drive died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Revs. William P. Shytle and Bob Porterfield officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Cleveland County, N.C., Mr. Ellis was a son of the late G.W. "Jack" Ellis Sr. and Kate Mintz Ellis. He was the retired owner of Ellis Carpet Cleaning and previously was a heavy-equipment operator for Duke Power and Daniel Construction. He served in the Army and was a former member of Masonic Lodge No. 385, Crescent Shrine Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2889 and American Legion Post 34. He was a member of Park Ridge Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Glenda Reel Ellis; two sons, Billy "Skeeter" Ellis and Gregory Scott Ellis, both of Rock Hill; his daughter, Aleta Wightman of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Park Ridge Baptist Church building fund.

Patrick Gryder

ROCK HILL - Mr. Patrick Oates Gryder, 59, of 2494 Greenwood Road died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Beverly Health Care.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Friendship United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Taylor officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Gryder was a son of Frances Oates Gryder of Rock Hill and the late Roy Winfield Gryder Sr. He attended Clemson University. Mr. Gryder was retired from Celanese and was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two brothers, Roy W. Gryder of Huntsville, Alab.; Bill Gryder of Citrus Heights, Calif.; two stepsons, Randy T. Crowder and Sandy T. Crowder, both of Rock Hill; two stepdaughters, Judy C. Dansby and Angela C. McAteer, both of Rock Hill; and seven step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the service and at other times at the home.

Hazelean Stevenson

CHESTER - Mrs. Hazelean Perry Stevenson, 77, of 3127 Lyles Road died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rehoboth AME Zion Church, with the Rev. W.H. Woods Jr. officiating and the Rev. Moses Lightner assisting. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Chester County, Mrs. Stevenson was a daughter of the late Willie Barber and Della Perry. She was the widow of John Willie Stevenson. She was a retired domestic worker, was a member of Rehoboth AME Zion Church, where she was a former choir member and stewardess board member. She had attended Chester County public schools.

Surviving are four sons, Willie James Stevenson and Charles Stevenson, both of Chester, Horace Stevenson of Richburg and Bobby Stevenson of Catawba; four daughters, Della McCrorey and Shirley Strong, both of the home; Essie Beaty of Chester and Ellen McCullough of Rock Hill; 33 grandchildren; and 50 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home. The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St.

Clyde Alexander

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. - Mr. Clyde Alfred Alexander, 75, of 504 S. Main St. died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the First Foursquare Gospel Church of Belmont, N.C., with the Rev. Robert Thompson officiating. Entombment will follow at Hillcrest Gardens in Mount Holly.

A native of Charlotte, Mr. Alexander was a son of Charlie Clyde Alexander and Maggie Lois Williams Alexander. He was a co-owner of Charlotte Paint Co. and was a member of Painting and Decorating Contractors of America where he served as a past president.

Surviving are his wife, Daphine Mauney Alexander; five sons, Nelson Alexander of York, Wayne Alexander of Catawba, Mike Alexander of Rock Hill, James Alexander of Marion and Tracy Alexander of Stanley; six daughters, Sherrie Herndon of Belmont, Peggy Alexander of Charlotte, Charlene Starnes of Rock Hill, Cherryl McMillian of Dallas, N.C., Beverly Moore of Belmont and Teresa Keener of Mount Holly; and 19 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5:30 p.m. today at Carothers Funeral Home in Mount Holly.

Betty Bailey

CLOVER - Mrs. Betty Murray Bailey, 71, of 111 Knox St. died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Lakeview Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Dr. William K. Neely officiating.

A native of Pittsburgh, Mrs. Bailey was a daughter of the late Horace Dennison Murray and Helen Horn Murray. She was secretary of Clover Auto Parts and was a member of Clover Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Clover Post.

Surviving are her husband, Robert J. Bailey; four sons, Robert Pickens Bailey of Clinton, John A. Bailey of Clover, Earl D. Bailey of York and Horace D. Bailey of Charlotte; five daughters, Pat Finch of York, Donna Ferrell, Barbara Love, and Margaret Jenkins, all of Clover, and April Patino of Rowland Heights, Calif.; her brother, Sam Murray of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Jane Moser of Greenville and Marie Pettus of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Patrick Gryder

John Rodgers Jr.

YORK - Mr. John Kell Rodgers Jr., 60, of 198 S. Shiloh Road died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Allison Creek Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Alan Arnold and Larry Richards officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Monroe, N.C., Mr. Rodgers was a son of the late John Kell Rodgers and Margaret Rodden Rodgers. He was the retired owner of Rodgers Tree Service in Rock Hill and was the retired owner of Kell's Place in York. He was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church and attended Allison Creek Presbyterian Church. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his wife, Julia "Judy" Covington Rodgers; two sons, Kevin Rodgers of Asheville, N.C., and Scott Goins of Darlington; two daughters, Dee Carpenter of Rock Hill and Lynn Smith of Filbert; his brother, Wayne Rodgers of Columbia; his sister, Judy Walls of Simpsonville; and 10 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel, and other times at the home.

Samuel Scott Sr.

BESSEMER CITY, N.C. - Mr. Samuel Edward Scott Sr., 79, of 128 Thelma Lane died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Mount Beulah Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wade Hunsinger officiating. Burial will be at Westview Gardens with military honors provided by The Last Man Club of Gastonia, N.C.

A native of York County, Mr. Scott was a son of the late James Eugene Scott and Elizabeth Devinney Scott. He was the widower of Thelma Scott Moore. He was retired from Gaston College, where he worked in plant operations.

Mr. Scott was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of King Solomon Lodge No. 704 in Gastonia and was a member of Mount Beulah Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Samuel Scott Jr. and Robert J. Scott, both of Gastonia; three daughters, Sylvia S. Alexander of Gastonia, Linda S. McLean of Rock Hill and Patricia S. Walters of Bessemer City; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Carothers Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Robert Thomas

CHESTER - Mr. Robert Jefferson Thomas, 87, of 161 Center St. died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Home, with the Revs. Hugh McKinney and Clay Waldrip officiating. Burial will be at Lando Cemetery.

A native of Georgia, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Thomas was a member of First Baptist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline McKinney Thomas;, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Home.

Jean Adams

FORT MILL - Mrs. Jean Falconer Perrin Adams, 93, of 2823 Ashley Arbor died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Mercy Hospital South in Pineville, N.C.

The funeral will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wolfe Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sue Lambright officiating. Burial will be Saturday at Oaklawn Cemetery in Fairfield, Conn.

A native of Larchmont, N.Y., Mrs. Adams was a daughter of the late Howell Corby Perrin and Mae Kerr Perrin. She was the widow of Ralph Brundage and Frederick Adams. She was co-founder of Brundage Jewelry Store. She also was a bookkeeper for the Patterson Country Club in Fairfield. She served as a volunteer at the Carlton Rehabilitation Center, was Girl Scout troop leader and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Eastern Star of Norwalk, Conn. She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Fairfield.

Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Zanesky of Fort Mill; her son, Ralph Brundage Jr. of Boyton Beach, Fla.; her sister, Barbara Chappell of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

The family will receive from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Bernice Blakeney

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Bernice Blakeney, 68, of 357 Chestnut St. died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthews AME Church, with the Rev. Arthur Randolph Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Pine Bluff, Ark., Mrs. Blakeney was the widow of Horace Blakeney. She moved to Rock Hill in 1983 after living in Chicago.

Surviving are her daughter, Lucille Raymond Maywood of Illinois; her son, Antonio Bullette of Kansas City, Kan.; two brothers, William Lowery of Arkansas and William Wimbly of Chicago; her sister, Olivia Nicks of Chicago; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 today at Parker Funeral Home.

Ann King

LANCASTER - Mrs. Ann DuPree King, 80, of Golf Course Road died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Roy Barnes and James Spencer III officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Pine Bluff, Ark., Mrs. King was a daughter of the late W.T. DuPree and Sarah DuPree. She was the widow of John C. King. She earned a master's degree in education and retired after 33 years in the Lancaster school system. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa education sorority and was an active member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, John DuPree King of Spartanburg and William King of Lancaster; her daughter, Nancy Cauthen of Lancaster; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church and at other times at the home of Nancy Cauthen, 2037 Golf Course Road.

Memorials may be made to the Rose DuPree Scholarship Fund, Columbia Bible College, P.O. Box 3122, Columbia, SC 29230-3122.
