Lester E. Prather
January 16, 2004

Lester E. Prather, 86, of 1327 Wheeler Street, Newberry, died Friday, January 16, 2004, at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Prather was born on September 8, 1917 in Cross Anchor, a son of the late Thomas J. and Ola Chapman Prather. He was Marine veteran of World War II and was retired from Norfolk Air Station, Norfolk, VA.
Mr. Prather is survived by his wife for over 50 years, Frances Ragsdale Prather; a sister, Lillian Crowe of Collierville, TN and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Sunday at Hillcrest Cemetery in Greer by the Rev. Steve Jackson.
Memorial may be made to Thornwell Home for Children, 300 S. Broad Street, Clinton, SC 29325.

Angie Ruff
January 15, 2004

Angie Ruff, 50, of Newberry, died Thursday, January 15, 2004 at the J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home. She was born on March 26, 1953 in Newberry, the daughter of the late John David and Ethel Kinard Ruff. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Miss Ruff is survived by an uncle and three aunts, Walter E. “Jack” and Ruth Ruff of Prosperity and Lillian Younginer and Clara Gregory both of West Columbia; and a number of cousins. She was predeceased by an uncle, Wilbur Ruff.
Angie’s family knew she was special and loved her very much. She will truly be missed. She was previously a resident of Whitten Center, Clinton; the Hunter Home; and 2014 Nance St., Newberry. She worked at the Newberry Industries.
Funeral services for Angie Ruff will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Ronald G. Smith. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. Saturday prior to the funeral services.
Memorials may be made to the Bethany Lutheran Church, 2704 Nance St., Newberry SC 29108.
Active pallbearers will be Walter Ruff, Jr., Tugg Ruff, William Gregory, Gordon Eargle, Justin Ruff, and Eric Eargle.

Ruth Lytle Dean
Januray 13, 2004

Ruth Lytle Dean, 95, of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center in Laurens, formerly of Newberry, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004. She was a congressional secretary in Washington , DC for 41 years.
Mrs. Dean is survived a son and daughter-in-law, Francis and June Dean of Laurens; a granddaughter, Karen Dean Davis of Greenwood; five great-grandchildren, Landon, Kramer, Zak, and Keri Davis, all of Greenwood and Matthew C. Dean of Due West. She was predeceased by a grandson, Keith I. Dean.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg By the Rev. John Parks.

Carol T. Eargle
December 15, 2003

Carol T. Eargle, 75, of Green Acres, FL and a visitor of Santa Maria, CA for the past six months, died at the home of her niece in Santa Maria on December 15, 2003.
A vigil service was held in Santa Maria on December 21, 2003. Visitation and funeral mass were held in Lakeworth, FL on Jan. 11 and 12, 2004. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 in the West End Cemetery in Newberry.
Mrs. Eargle was raised and educated in Norwich, NY. She resided in Palm Beach County, Florida for the past 45 years. The majority her career was spent in the telephone industry, the most recent being Southern Bell Telephone, with whom she retired.
She is survived by her niece, Sally Ann Ryan and her husband , William of Santa Maria, CA and several nieces and nephews. Also, her late husband’s daughter, Tahelia Eargle Wardlaw and her husband, Charles, sons and grandsons of Batesville-Leesville, SC.
She was predeceased in death by her beloved husband, Aumerle “Ace” Eargle and son, Thomas Lynn.
Arrangements are under the joint direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary of Santa Maria, CA., Dorsey Smith Memory Gardens of Lakeworth, Fl and Whitaker Funeral Home of Newberry, SC.

Mary Hawkins Sease
January 10, 2004

Mary Hawkins Sease, 87, formerly of 4139 Bush River Road, Newberry, widow of Burton R. Sease, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Mrs. Sease was born in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Bloomer Pearson and Mary Elizabeth Sligh Hawkins. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and the Mary E. Hipp Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Sease is survived by a daughter, Rosemary S. Dominick of Columbia; a son and daughter-in-law, David B. and Millicent Sease of Columbia; two granddaughters, Marianne Sease of Greenville and Rebekah Sease of Charlotte; a sister, Elizabeth H. Shannon of Newberry; two brothers, Bloomer F. “Jack” Hawkins and Willie H. Hawkins both of Newberry; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mary Hawkins Sease will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Steven Counts and the Rev. Dick Albert. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer Growing in Grace Fund, PO Box 382, Newberry SC 29108

Thomas M. Abrams
January 10, 2004

Thomas M. Abrams, 81, formerly of 4200 Bush River Road, Newberry, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
Mr. Abrams was born in Newberry County, a son of the late Oscar H. and Phoebe Reagin Abrams. He was a 1943 graduate of Clemson College and he was an Army veteran of WWII, having served in the infantry in the European Theater. He retired in 1984 as the Director of the Newberry County Conservation Service (ASCS) Office and he was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the agriculture in Newberry County. He was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder. He was also a member of the Newberry Lions Club and he was a Bush River Volunteer Fireman. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid Clemson football fan.
Mr. Abrams is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia A. and Homer L. “Sonny” Ringer of Newberry; his grandson, Lee T. Ringer of Lufkin, TX; a sister, Inez A. Stephens of Newberry; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Frances Abrams and Gertrude Wise and three brothers, Cecil, Mac, and Ed Abrams.
Funeral services for Thomas M. Abrams will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Smyrna Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Scott E. Hill. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Smyrna Presbyterian Church, 32 Smyrna Road, Newberry SC 29108 or to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 352, Newberry SC 29108.
Active pallbearers will be Edward Abrams, Hugh Abrams, Sandy Abrams, Alex Hash, Pete Boozer, George Senn, David Sease, Heber Long and Richard Lominick.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons and Elders of Smyrna and the nurses and staff of J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.

Mary Frances Longshore McCullough
January 9, 2004

Mary Frances Longshore McCullough, 89, formerly of 1505 Caldwell Street, Newberry, widow of John E. McCullough, died Friday, January 09, 2004 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. McCullough was born on November 19, 1914 in Newberry, a daughter of the late Walter T. and Ruth Stillwell Longshore. She worked for the Newberry County School System for 35 years and retired as Food Service Supervisor. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and W.E.L.C.A.
Mrs. McCullough is survived by a niece, Miriam Gaddy of Sumter and a special friend, Peggy Sanders Longshore of Crewe, VA and several great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, McHardy Longshore, Thompson Longshore, Henry Longshore and Ernest Longshore and a nephew, Ernest C. Longshore, Jr.
Graveside funeral services for Mary Frances Longshore McCullough will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Sunday at Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Steven Counts.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 P. M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, PO Box 382, Newberry, SC 29108.
