Wilie Mae Byrd

YORK - Mrs. Wilie Mae Haggins Byrd, 73, of 6-B White Oak Apartments died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Gold Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. George McCoy officiating and the Rev. William McClain assisting. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary White of Clover; six brothers, Andrew Mitchell, Carl Mitchell and Jimmy Mitchell, all of Rock Hill, Ernest Mitchell and William Haggins, both of York and Frank Haggins of Trenton; four sisters, Pauline Gundy of Trenton, N.J., and Maggie Curry, Johnnie Hefney and Iva Lee Miller, all of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive at the home of Jimmy Mitchell, 1280 Holland Road, Rock Hill.

Wright Funeral Home is in charge.

G. Herbert Chambers Sr.

YORK - Mr. G. Herbert Chambers Sr., 77, of 213 Herndon Ave. died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rose Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Tony Grant officiating.

A native of York County, Mr. Chambers was a son of the late Stacy Chambers and Odette Mitchell Chambers. He was a retired pipe fitter with Duke Power Co. He served with the Marines in World War II at Iwo Jima and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of York ARP Church.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanette McKnight Chambers; two sons, G.H. Chambers Jr. of Sharon and Gary Chambers of Clover; two brothers, Bill Chambers and J.D. Chambers, both of York; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

John Holmes

ROCK HILL - Mr. John Lewis Holmes of 244 Simrill St. died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church in Great Falls, with the Rev. Z.B. Wells officiating. The Rev. A.L. Mickles will give the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Holmes was a son of the late Willie James Holmes and Laura Maloney Holmes. He joined at Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church at an early age and later attended Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a member of the church recycling department. He was a graduate of Elizabeth Heights High School in Great Falls.

Surviving are his special companion, L.B. Currence of Rock Hill; four sisters, Lottie Bell Cloud of Lancaster, Sallie Elizabeth Caldwell of Great Falls, Betty Jean Relford of Chicago and the Rev. Doris Holmes of Rock Hill; and three brothers, James Lee Holmes and Dan Holmes, both of Great Falls, and Walker V. Holmes of Ridgeway.

A memorial service will be 6 tonight at Bethel Baptist Church, Porter Road, Rock Hill.

The body will be placed in Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church at 11 a.m. Friday.

Robinson Funeral Home is in charge.

Yates Martin

BLACKSBURG - Mr. Colonel Yates Martin, 59, of 304 S. Charleston St. died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Eastside Baptist Church, with Dr. Marneese Hampton and the Revs. Jamie Ellis and Randy Martin officiating. Burial will be in Clingman Memorial Gardens.

A native of Hickory Grove, Mr. Martin is a son of the late Dargin Martin and Catherine Allison Martin. He was a retired textile employee from Rosa Industries and a deacon at Eastside Baptist Church.

Mr. Martin was the widower of Betty Burgess Martin.

Surviving are his son, Roger Martin of Blacksburg; his brother, Charles Martin of Rock Hill; and his sister, Nellie Moore of Hickory Grove.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Gordon Mortuary.

Katherine McGarity

CHESTER - Mrs. Katherine Black McGarity, 74, of 123 Dewey St. died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Westside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mark Chapman and Todd Smith officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mrs. McGarity was a daughter of the late Pressley Black and Nellie Stanton Black Gulledge. She was the widow of Charlie E. McGarity. She was retired from Chester Sports Wear and attended Chesterfield County schools. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church, where she was a member of the WMU. She also was a volunteer at Chester County Hospital.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara M. Carr of Winnsboro and Patsy M. Davis of Augusta, Ga.; her brother, David Black of Mount Croghan; two sisters, Eunice Eason of Jefferson and Rosie Campbell of Kannapolis, N.C.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Mary Rogers

SPARTANBURG - Mrs. Mary Rogers Rogers of 103 Sydnor Road died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Rob Robinson officiating. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church in Spartanburg, with the Rev. Willie S. Teague officiating.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Rogers was a daughter of the late Dr. Arthur S. Rogers and Millie Lynn Rogers. She was the widow of Lott Townsend Rogers. She graduated in 1932 from Winthrop College with a degree in music. She taught school in Green Sea and Conway. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where she was active with the membership and the evangelism committee. She also served as president of the altar guild and was corresponding secretary. She was on the board of Travelers Aid and was a board member of Bethlehem Center. She was a member of the Perennial Garden Club, the Athenaeum Book Club and the Debutante Club, where she served as secretary.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Anna Barrera of Newnan, Ga.; her son, Lott Rogers Jr. of Halifax, Va.; her adopted son, James P. Watson of Tullahoma, Tenn., and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Floyd's North Church Street chapel.

John Shaw

FLORENCE - Mr. John Shaw, 86, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Southland Health Care Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

A native of Marion County, Mr. Shaw was a son of the late Evander M. Shaw and Mary S. Shaw. He was retired from Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Co. and was employed by the security divisions of McLeod and Florence General hospitals. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he was a member of Ed River's Sunday school class and was a lifetime member of the Chancel Choir and served on various committees of the church. He was a Mason in Amity Lodge 340 of Florence.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Stegall Shaw; four sons, Paul Shaw of York, David Shaw of Sumter, Bobby Shaw of Florence and John Rhett Shaw of Roanoke, Va.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cain-Poston Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Bobby and LuAnn Shaw, 4113 Pelican Lane.

Memorials may be made to the music department of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Agnes Simon

SUMTER - Mrs. Agnes Elizabeth Bochette Simon, 73, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at a local nursing center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home, with Clinton Goff, Carl Ham-ilton and Eric Hahn officiating. Burial will be at Salem Southern Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of Lee County, Mrs. Simon was a daughter of the late Dexter Boykin and Verley Hancock Boykin. She was the widow of Blease Bochette and Albert Simon.

Surviving are her son, Danny Bochette; five daughters, Gloria Brown, Shirley Watson, Judy Scurry, Sylvia Sides and Cathy Baumeister; her brother, Jack Boykin; her sister, Mozelle Barnes; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two stepchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home.

Louise Craig

CHESTER - Mrs. Louise Jeter Craig, 67, of 2844 Pilgrim Road died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at her home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, with the Rev. Curtis Washington officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Craig was a daughter of Cuvester Worthy Jeter of Chester and the late Barth Jeter Sr. She was the widow of Napoleon Craig. Mrs. Craig was a member of the Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, the Bright Light Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 146. She was a homemaker and attended the public schools of Chester County.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her son, Michael Craig of Georgia; five daughters, Loretta Chalk, Mary Land and Delores Timmons, all of Chester, Joyce Ford of Charlotte and Michelle Craig of Clinton; six brothers, Barth Jeter Jr., Harry D. Jeter, Robert Jeter and William Jeter, all of Chester, Columbus Jeter of Sharon and Louis Jeter of Charlotte; 22 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight with Eastern Star Rites at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Kelee Robinson

LANCASTER - Kelee Ryanne Robinson, infant daughter of Antonie Lee and Tracy Ann Thomas Robinson, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Unity ARP Church cemetery.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her brother, Travon Thomas of Lancaster; maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Susan and Rodney Boatwright of Lancaster; maternal grandfather and step-grandmother, Danny and Tonette Thomas of Lancaster; maternal great-grandparents, Harold and Billie Steele and Frank and Janie Thomas, all of Lancaster; maternal great-great-grandparents, Caldwell and Edna McAteer of Lancaster; paternal grandmother, Jacqueline Robinson of Lancaster; and paternal great-grandmother, Dorothy Morrow of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the home of Susan Boatwright, 2572 Dudley Steele Road, Lancaster.

Robert Gill

ROCK HILL - Mr. Robert Lee Gill, 75, of 444 Allen St. died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Prospect Baptist Church with the Rev. C.D. Montgomery officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Gill was a son of the late Sam Gill and Nancy Stevenson Gill. He was retired from Todd's Lumber Co. and was a member of Mount Prospect Baptist Church.

Surviving are his brother, Charlie Gill of Rock Hill; his sister, Josephine Gill of Rock Hill; and his special friend, Pearline McMullen of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at the home of Charlie Gill, 424 Fewell St., Rock Hill.

The body may be viewed from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Macon Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.
