Martha Whitener

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Mrs. Martha Hogue Whitener, 91, of Derby Road died Friday, March 3, 2000, at a Portsmouth hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cradock Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Richard W. Lovingood officiating. Burial will be at Olive Branch Cemetery.

A native of Clover, Mrs. Whitener was a member of Cradock Presbyterian Church and was a former president and honorary life member of Women of The Church. She was the widow of Henry E. Whitener.

Surviving are her daughter, Martha Wade of Pinehurst, N.C.; two sons, William Whitener and James Whitener, both of Chesapeake, Va.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund of Cradock Presbyterian Church or to the charity of one's choice.

Doris Burns

LANCASTER - Mrs. Doris Taylor Burns, 52, of 2714 University Drive died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bill Poore officiating.

Born in Lancaster, Mrs. Burns was a daughter of the late William Minor Taylor and Mary Lee Eller Taylor. She was a member of Springdell Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Jimmy Burns of Lancaster; two sons, Dean Burns and Greg Burns, both of Lancaster; her daughter, Amy Wilson of Lancaster; three sisters, Pauline Threatt and Helen Wright, both of Lancaster, and Edna Robinson of Monroe, N.C.; and her grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cauthen Funeral Home and other times at the home of Doris B. Burns, 1683 Holy Dale Drive, Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to Springdell Baptist Church, 1420 Springdell Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Laura Mae Cooper

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Laura Mae Young Cooper, 89, of Morningside Assisted Living died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakland Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert D. Shrum officiating.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Columbia, with the Rev. Phil Lavender officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia.

Born in Sumter County, Mrs. Cooper was a daughter of the late Samuel Lee Young Sr. and May Walker Young. She was the widow of Col. Grover C. Cooper Jr.

Mrs. Cooper was a homemaker and was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Columbia, where she was active with the Women of the Church. She worked also with Meals on Wheels in Columbia.

Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Cooper Gentry of Rock Hill; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the Oakland Baptist Church parlor and other times at the home of Joe and Patricia Gentry, 404 Warrington Place, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 2501 Heyward St., Columbia, SC 29205.

Pauline Kale

SHELBY, N.C. - Mrs. Pauline Bell Kale, 83, of 701 Royster Ave. died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Lakeview Living Center in Pineville, N.C.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Clay-Barnette Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Steve Jirgal officiating. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.

A native of Cherokee County, Mrs. Kale was a daughter of the late John Felix Bell and Margaret Bernice Mintz Bell. She was the widow of Ted Warren Kale Sr. She was retired from Shelby Mill. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, a past president of Shelby Senior Citizens and a former Pink Lady at Cleveland Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are her son, Ted Warren Kale of Charlotte; her daughter, Joyce Allen of Rock Hill; her brother, Francis Bell of Roseburg, Ore.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Eastview Baptist Church, Gordon Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Vivian Kimbrell

YORK - Mrs. Vivian Hamilton Kimbrell, 100, of 1047 Turkey Ridge Road, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church in York, with the Rev. Lee Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill.

A native of York County, Mrs. Kimbrell was a daughter of the late John Hamilton and Margaret Hamilton. She was a homemaker and was a member of First Baptist Church in Rock Hill. She was the widow of Austin Edward Kimbrell.

Surviving are her son, Jack H. Kimbrell of Rock Hill; two daughters, Kim Kimbrell and Mickie K. Michaels, both of York; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the Bratton Funeral Home in York.

Memorials may be made to the Philadelphia United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2343 South 321, York, SC 29745.

Angela Chavarria

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Angela Chavarria, 85, of 1641 W. Lakewood Drive died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. today at St. Anne Catholic Church, with Father William Pentis officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Costa Rica, Mrs. Chavarria was a daughter of the late Carlos Chavarria and Aurola Alpisaa Chavarria. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Cecilia Llanusa of the home; her brother, Henry Llanusa of Costa Rica; and her sister, Anita Chavarria of Brandon, Fla.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at St. Anne Catholic Church.

Greene Funeral Home is in charge.

Curtis Matheny II

ROCK HILL - Mr. Curtis Van "Bud" Matheny II, 42, of 1014 Cedar Grove Lane died Friday, March 3, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mervin Horst officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill Mem-orial Gardens.

A native of Aberdeen, S.D., Mr. Matheny was a son of Curtis Van Matheny Sr. and Morna Hiller Matheny. He was a member of Faith Assembly of God.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his brother, Christopher Jon Matheny of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and four sisters, Gracia Ann Neal of Saluda, N.C., Brenda Sue Matheny of Blanco, Texas, Jody Kay Liles of Monroe, N.C., and Roberta Lynne Matheny of New York.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his parents, 4944 Mount Gallant Road.

Mary Stewart

THOMASVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Mary Henley "Sis" Stewart, 79, of 843 Bowerwood Drive, formerly of York, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church in York, with the Rev. Franklin Russell III officiating. Burial will be at Uniondale Cemetery in York.

Surviving are her daughter, Willie Elyn Love of the home; and her granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church and at other times at the home of Josie Gutherie, 9 Pinckney St. in York.

Sallie Peterson

CHESTER - Mrs. Sallie Lilly Peterson, 92, of 124 Bailey St. died Sunday, March 5, 2000.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mount Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. W. G. Boulware officiating, and the Revs. William A. Chisholm and David Walker assisting. Burial will be at Mount Hopewell Church in Rodman.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Peterson was a daughter of the late Will Lilly and Martha Woodard. She was a homemaker and was a deaconess at Mount Olive Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sister, Beatrice Jackson of Baltimore; and her daughter, Mary Owens of Chester

The body may be viewed from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.

The family will receive friends from noon to 9 p.m. today at the home of the daughter, 112 Bailey St., Chester.

Ruby Stone

CHESTER - Mrs. Ruby Page Stone, 91, formerly of Woods Ferry Road died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wilksburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Billings officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Stone was a daughter of the late John R. Page and Lula Waters Foote Page. She was a retired secretary and had attended school in Chester County. She was a member of Wilksburg Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Nathan H. Stone; and her niece, Mary Lou Griffith of Chester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Raymond Wallace

LANCASTER - Mr. Raymond Lamar Wallace, 62, of 2087 Catoe Road died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eastside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Joel Rhyner and Cecil Johnson officiating. Entombment with Masonic Rites by Hart Lodge No. 380 will be at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.

A native of Gaston County, N.C., Mr. Wallace was a son of Nancy Evelyn Huffstetler Wallace and the late William Millard Wallace. He was a retired security guard for Springs Industries Grace Bleachery, a member of Hart Masonic Lodge No. 380 and a member of Eastside Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Pat Catoe Wallace; two sons, Byron Lee Wallace of Lancaster and William Lamar Wallace of North Carolina; two brothers, Charles Wallace of Bath and Paul David Wallace of Lancaster; two sisters, Shirley McRae of Beach Island and Nancy Glenn of Fairplay; and his grandson.

The family will receive friends at Mahaffey Funeral Home from 7 to 9 tonight.

Jeff Armstrong

JEFFERSON, Ga. - Mr. Jeff Armstrong, 93, of 175 Old Pendergrass Road died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000.

The funeral was Friday, March 3, at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Burial was at Jackson Memorial Gardens in Commerce, Ga.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Jefferson was a son of the late Forney Richard Armstrong and Mamie Witherspoon Armstrong. He was retired from Georgia Power Co. and served as past president of the Rotary Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Jefferson, where he served as a past deacon.

Surviving are his wife, Frances K. Armstrong; her daughter, Janet A. Cassidy of Maryland; her sister, Mamie A. Morrison of Richburg; four brothers, Thomas K. Armstrong of Orangeburg, William Elihu Armstrong and Frank R. Armstrong, both of Chester, and Daniel M. Armstrong of Rock Hill; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jackson Funeral Home in Jefferson is in charge.

Jerry Baker Jr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Jerry Dean Baker Jr., 32, of 853 Dahlia Road died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Revs. Kenneth Wren, Joel Rhyner and Jeff Williams officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Baker was the son of Jerry Dean Baker Sr. and Linda Baker McCants. He was employed by Springs Industries Grace Bleachery Engineering Department and was a member of Pleasant Dale Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his father and mother are his wife, Tammy Johnson Baker; his daughter, Raylee Dyann Baker of the home; four brothers, Jason Baker, Bryan Baker, Scott McCants and Jamie McCants, all of Lancaster; two sisters, Susan Helms and Jennifer Neely, both of Lancaster; his paternal grandparents, Ralph and Ollie Mae Moree; his paternal grandmother, Aileen Baker; and his stepmother Chris Plyler Baker of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster. Mr. Baker's family will be at the home of his father-in-law, Jackson L. Johnson, 551 Dahlia Road, Lancaster.
