Carl Mackey

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Carl Mackey, 69, of 131 Francis Ave. died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Mount Dearborn United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Tony Medlin and Jerry Phillips officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Mackey was a son of the late Thomas Rudolph Mackey and Lillian Bell Mackey. He was a member of Mount Dearborn United Methodist Church, where he served as trustee and as a member of the administrative board. He was owner and operator of Mackey's Used Cars, was a graduate of Lancaster High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He was a member of the Great Falls Masonic Lodge No. 277 and was president of the Wateree Hunt Club. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy G. Mackey; his son, Thomas Carl "Buddy" Mackey Jr. of Pinehurst, N.C.; two daughters, Debra Robbins of Rock Hill and Melissa Bumgardner of Fort Lawn; two brothers, Stover Mackey of Great Falls and Tony Mackey of Lancaster; his sister, Ann Murphy of Milwaukee; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Mount Dearborn United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 246, Great Falls, SC 29055.

Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home is in charge.

Grover Murphy Jr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Grover Cleveland Murphy Jr., 78, of 313 Gillsbrook Road died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Roy Barnes, Larry Roberts and Tom Capps officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Murphy was a son of the late Grove C. Murphy Sr. and Lola Lowery Murphy. He was retired from Springs Industries and was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Murphy was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Vera Bowers Murphy; his daughter, Sherry Murphy Easley of Rock Hill; and his sister, Mary M. Black of Greenville.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Dan Sherer Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Dan McCaw Sherer Sr., 49, of 187 Green Bay Drive died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Greene Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Douglas O. Jones officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Sherer was the son of the late Albert M. Sherer Jr. and Helen King Sherer.

He was an employee of SW Construction Corp. and was a 1969 graduate of Rock Hill High School. Mr. Sherer was of the Associate Reform faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his son, Dan McCaw Sherer Jr. of Rock Hill; and two sisters, Sylvia June Sherer of Rock Hill and Gloria J. Walden of Kenai, Alaska.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and other times at the home of his mother, 187 Green Bay Drive.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Frankie Pittman

CHESTER - Mr. Frankie Lane Pittman, 57, of 1661 Center Road died Tuesday, March 14, 2000.

The closed-casket funeral will be private.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Pittman was a son of Betty Pope Simpson of Rock Hill and the late Leonard Pittman. He was employed as a welder with the SW Construction Corp. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are in addition to his mother are his wife, Brenda Herring Pittman; two sons, Frank Lane Wood of Rock Hill and Tony Wood of McConnells; his daughter, Candice Pittman of Fort Mill; three brothers, Mike Pope, Wayne Pittman and Timmy Simpson, all of Rock Hill; and his sister, Juan Hammond of Diamond Head, Miss.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home.

Rollie Stevens

LANCASTER - Mr. Rollie Bell "Roddey" Stevens, 68, of 1701 Stevens Hill Road died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at High Point Freewill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Stuart Snow. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Stevens was a son of the late Edward Lewis Stevens and Mary Frances Sims Stevens. He attended High Point Free Will Baptist Church and operated a produce stand in Fort Mill.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Joyce Bratcher Stevens; his son, Jerry Edward Stevens of Lancaster; three daughters, Janet Darlene Stevens Richards and Loretta Stevens Barnhill, both of Rock Hill, and Annie S. Rivers of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

James Sweeney

FORT MILL - Mr. James Woodrow "Grandpa" Sweeney, 85, of

749 Jim Wilson Road died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Indian Land Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Benny Green officiating.

A native of Beckley, W.Va., Mr. Sweeney was a retired coal miner and was a member of Indian Land Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Gary Wayne Sweeney of Fort Mill and Curtis M. Sweeney of Charlotte; his daughter, Julia Carolyn Kincaid of Simpsonville; seven grandchildren including his caregiver, Lori W. Kincaid; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the graveside service.

Memorials may be made to Indian Land Baptist Church, 7583 Charlotte Highway, Fort Mill, SC 29715.

Richard Symonds

SMYRNA - Mr. Richard Cantrell Symonds, 76, of 795 Woodland Park Road died Friday, March 10, 2000, at home.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Smyrna ARP Church, with the Revs. Kyle Sims and Andy Putnam officiating.

A native of New York City, Mr. Symonds was a son of the late Alfred G. Symonds and Mable Cantrell Symonds. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Philippines. He graduated from Norwalk High School in 1941.

Mr. Symonds earned his bachelor's degree and his master's degree from Tufts University. He was a member of Theta Delta Phi Fraternity. He attended the New York University doctorate program and earned his psychology examiner license from Fairfield University.

He taught at Benjamin Franklin Junior High School and Center Junior High School in Norwalk, Conn., and at Bedford Junior High School in Westport, Conn. Mr. Symonds was an educator and guidance administrator for the Fairfield County school system and served a guidance house master at Roger Ludlowe High School.

After retirement, he became owner and manger of Woodland Park Campground in Smyrna. Mr. Symonds served on the board of the Westside Health Center in Sharon, was a former member of the South Carolina Campground Association and was a former member of the York Comprehensive High School advisory board. He also was a member of Smyrna ARP Church.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Wetmore Symonds; his son, Bob Symonds of Smyrna; his daughter, Ellen Symonds Carroll of Rock Hill; his grandson; and his nephew.

The family will receive friends at Smyrna ARP Church fellowship hall after the service.

Memorials may be made to Smyrna ARP Church, 1341 W. Main St., Smyrna, SC 29743 or Hospice Community Care, 325 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730 or the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.

Skyler Trull

YORK - Miss Skyler Nichole Trull, 5, of 912 Osteen Road died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be noon today at Jubilee Christian Center, with the Rev. Richard Little officiating. Entombment will be at Gaston Memorial Parks Mausoleum of Peace in Gastonia, N.C.

Born in Gaston County, N.C., Skyler was a daughter of Larry E. Trull and Jacqueline N. Trull.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her brother, Jeremiah S. Johnson of York; and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Trull of Clover and Mr. and Mrs. Jack W. Neal of Salem, Va.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon today at Jubilee Christian Center.

Mary Vaught

FLORENCE - Mrs. Mary Brunson Vaught, 71, of 1406 Rollins Ave., formerly of Chester, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at McCleod Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester, with the Rev. Marc Mason officiating.

A native of Bennettsville, Mrs. Vaught was a daughter of the late Emmett Wallace Brunson Sr. and Pearl Wolfe Brunson. She was the widow of Thomas Liston Vaught. Mrs. Vaught was a retired nurse at Florence Convalescent Center. She was a 1947 graduate of Chester High School. She was member of Purity Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas L. Vaught Jr. of Winnenberg-Lieberg, Germany, Marvin E. Abrams III of Greenville and Ronald S. Abrams of Whitmire; two daughters, Heidi Gore of Florence and Mary Abrams McManus of Seoul, South Korea; her brother, Emmett W. Brunson Jr. of Chester; her sister, Virginia Brunson Britt of Miami Beach, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Rebekah White

FORT MILL - Mrs. Rebekah Freeman White, 37, of 2205 White's Road died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be 7 tonight at Unity Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Dr. Dan Holloway and Jim Correll officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Unity Cemetery.

Born in Greenville, Mrs. White was a daughter of James Freeman and Patsy Watkins Freeman of York. A former resident of Rock Hill, she was a 1980 graduate of Northwestern High School. Mrs. White was employed with White Business Machines and was a member of the Rock Hill Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Sidney A. White; two brothers, James C. Freeman of Rock Hill and Daniel P. Freeman of York; her sister, Melissa F. Perry of Hickory Grove; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends after the service until 9 p.m. at Unity Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Charlie Hemphill Jr.

SICKLERVILLE, N.J. - Mr. Charlie "Sonny" Hemphill Jr., 58, of Sicklerville, formerly of Chester, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church in Chester, with the Rev. Paul F. Long officiating and the Rev. Ronald McClurkin assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Hemphill was a son of the Charlie Hemphill Sr. and Louise Foster Hemphill of Chester. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He attended the public schools of Chester County and a 1959 graduate of Finley High School. Mr. Hemphill was employed with Fortunoffs as a buyer of lighting fixtures. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a system analyst in 1993. After retirement, he was employed at Wal-Mart as manager of the electronics department. He was a Navy veteran.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Dorothy Mitchell Hemphill; five sons, James E. Hemphill and Shaun Hemphill, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Charles Hemphill III, Dwayne M. Hemphill and Derrick Hemphill, all of Sicklerville; his daughter, Monique H. Cunningham of Brooklyn; three brothers, James A. Hemphill of Montgomery, N.Y., John Hemphill and Ronald Foster, both of Memphis, Tenn.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Charlie and Louise Hemphill, 203 Peyton St., Chester.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Carolyn Johnson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Carolyn S. Johnson of 961 Steele St. died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Arrangements will be announced by Robinson Funeral Home.

Regenia McCorkle

FORT MILL - Mrs. Regenia Hunt McCorkle, 53, of 104 Grier St. died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wolfe Funeral Home, with the Rev. Elton Hunt officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

A native of Fairmont, N.C., Mrs. McCorkle was a daughter of the late Cecil Elisha Hunt and Bessie Mae Strickland Hunt. She attended Fairgrove High School and New Bethel Holiness Methodist Church in Rowland, N.C. Mrs. McCorkle enjoyed gardening, doll collecting and woodworking.

Surviving are her husband, Donald McCorkle; her son, Alex Chavis of Charlotte; two daughters, Bessie M. Chavis and Althena Chavis, both of Fort Mill; her stepson, Riki McCorkle of Fort Mill; her stepdaughter, Lana Austin of Tampa, Fla.; five brothers, James S. Hunt of Pembroke, N.C., Willie A. Hunt, Lee Edward Hunt and Wayne Hunt, all of Baltimore, and Junior L. Hunt of Charlotte; seven sisters, Vertie Thomas of Brunswick, Ga., Margaret Brown of Jacksonville, Fla., Genece Bowie of Glen Burnie, Md., Betty L. Hunt and Edna Sampson, both of Lumberton, N.C., Rose M. Pittsemburger of Franklin, W. Va., and Kathy Oxendine of Fairmont, N.C., and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at home.
