Samuel Hoyt Jr.

McCONNELLS - The Rev. Samuel Browne Hoyt Jr., 78, of 1680 McConnells Highway died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Chip Sneed officiating. Burial will be at Olivet Presbyterian Church Cemetery in McConnells.

A native of Newport News, Va., Hoyt was a son of the late Samuel Browne Hoyt Sr. and Virginia Carlisle Hoyt.

The Rev. Hoyt was a graduate of Davidson College and Columbia Theological Seminary, from which he won a scholarship that allowed him to study at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

He served churches in Virginia, North Carolina, George and South Carolina, including Bethesda, Olivet and Temple Presbyterian churches in York County and Smiths, Zion and Trinity Presbyterian churches in Chester County. Hoyt completed 50 years of preaching without missing a Sunday.

He was a charter member of the Highlands Ruritan Club and served in many capacities. He was active in the Covenant Presbytery and was a member of the McConnells Fire Department. He served as a first-line officer in the Pacific during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Lambeth Hoyt; his son, Samuel B. Hoyt III of House Springs, Mo.; two daughters, Virginia Hoyt Bach of Kershaw and France Hoyt Williams of Rome, Ga.; two brothers, Carlisle Hoyt of Montreat, N.C., and Dr. William R. Hoyt of Rome, Ga.; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Brenda Peach Moree

LANCASTER - Mrs. Brenda Peach Moree, 55, of 3268 Charlotte Highway, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Plyler officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Moree was a daughter of the late James William and Malitta Peach.

Surviving are her husband, Harvey Moree; two sons, Tim Plyler and Darin Plyler, both of Lancaster; two daughters, Rhonda Plyler of Augusta, Ga., and Lynn Dixon of Lancaster; three brothers, J.B. Peach, Howard Peach and Carlton Peach, all of Lancaster; her sister, Elaine Williams of McCormick; 15 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster chapel, and other times at the home of Lynn Dixon, 1197 Laurel Ave.

John Ruiz

NORFOLK, Va. - Mr. John Gonzalez Ruiz, 85, of 1200 Templar Blvd., died Friday, March 17, 2000, at Sentera Leigh Hospital in Norfolk.

A graveside service with military honors will be 11 a.m. today at Unity Cemetery in Fort Mill.

A native of San Francisco, Mr. Ruiz was a son of the late Joe Aquera Ruiz and Maria Godey Gonzalez Ruiz. He was the widower of Naomi Patterson Ruiz.

Mr. Ruiz retired as a ship fitter from the U.S. Navy in 1974. He served during World War II and the Korean War, earning a Bronze Star, National Defense Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Victory Medal. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 327 and the Fleet Reserves No. 60, both in Norfolk.

Surviving are three sons, Roy Ruiz of Banning, Calif., Raymond Ruiz of Keams Canyon, Calif., and Donald Ruiz of Catheral, Calif.; his stepdaughter, Barbara Scott Perez of Norfolk; and several grandchildren.

Edward Baker

KERSHAW - Mr. Edward Fred Baker, 71, of 4584 Cascade Road died Monday, March 20, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Buffalo Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bill Morris and Donald Coppedge officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Baker was a son of the late Eddie Clauson Baker and Drucilla Seegars Baker. He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, where he was a member of the adult Sunday school class. He was a member of Abney Lodge 211, a board member of the Bethune Water Co., a former member of the Kershaw County Election Commission and commissioner of the Mount Pisgah-Buffalo Fire Department. He served on the Kershaw County Council and was a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Jean Baker; two sons, Edward "Chuck" Baker of Durham, N.C., and Mike Baker of Irmo; his daughter, Althea Hendrix of Lexington; eight grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

Ernestine Garrison

LEXINGTON - Mrs. Ernestine "Tina" H. Garrison, 83, of Lexington died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Lexington Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Salvation Army Church in Rock Hill, with retired Maj. Robert Butler officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

A native of Wilmington, N.C., Mrs. Garrison was an active member of the Salvation Army Church. She was the widow of Alfred Garrison. She was a retired spinner in the textile industry.

Surviving are her son, Freddie J. Keach of Chapin; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 119 Charlotte Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

James Gill

ROCK HILL - Mr. James M. Gill, 75, of 231 Pond St. died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Sherman MacBeth officiating, the Rev. Z.B. Wells assisting and the Rev. L.L. Hancock eulogizing. Burial will be at Barber Memorial cemetery

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Gill was the son of the late Rev. Oscar Gill and Julia Gill. He was retired from the Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co. and was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth Gill of Rock Hill; his daughter, Margaret Gill Caldwell of Detroit; three sons, James Gill of Kingston, N.Y., John Gill of Brooklyn, N.Y., and William Gill of San Jose, Calif.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Calvary Baptist church building fund.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home. The body will be in church at 11 a.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends at the home.

Sarah Bailey

LANCASTER - Miss Sarah Elizabeth Bailey, 86, of 2044 Pageland Highway died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Stuart Snow officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Miss Bailey was a daughter of the late Robert Bailey and Ella King Bailey. A member of Immanuel Baptist Church, she was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

The family will be at the home of William "Fuzz" Whitaker, 1516 Cedardale Road, Lancaster.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Earline Coker

EDGEMOOR - Mrs. Doris Earline Ernandez Coker, 77, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Heath Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sam Warwick officiating. Burial will be in Lando Cemetery.

A native of Lando, Mrs. Coker was the daughter of the late Bennie M. Ernandez and Jessie Wilson Ernandez. Mrs. Coker retired from Manetta Mills, where she worked in the cloth room for more than 30 years. She was a member of Heath Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was treasurer.

Surviving are her husband, James E. Coker; and six sisters, Genola Collins of Lando, Fannie Ernandez, Vera Hough, Betty Cothran and Joyce Walker, all of Edgemoor, and Sylvia Hinson of Richburg.

William Houghton

ROCK HILL - Mr. William Francis Houghton, 62, of 313 Clayton Road died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens, with Father William F. Pentis officiating.

A native of Trenton, N.J., Mr. Houghton was a son of Catherine Fedeski Houghton of Maple Shale, N.J., and the late William J. Houghton. He was a civil engineer and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his daughter, Tracy H. Kopco of Philadelphia; and his brother, Paul C. Houghton of Clayton, N.C.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Earl Morrison

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Earl P. Morrison, 73, of 24 Church St., died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charles Bradley officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlake Cemetery.

A native of Great Falls, Mr. Morrison was the son of Samuel Edward Morrison and Katherine Estes Morrison. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. and was a member of the Second Baptist Church. He attended Chester County schools.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret H. Morrison; his brother, Pearl A. Morrison of Great Falls; and his sister, Daisey Crouch of Blackstock.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 today at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

James Faulkner Sr.

CLOVER - Mr. James Fowler Faulkner Sr., 75, of 844 Wayfield Road died Tuesday, March 21, 2000.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethany ARP Church, with the Rev. Alan Morrow officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Faulkner was a son of the late James Falls Faulkner and Carrie Fowler Faulkner. He was a veteran of World War II and a 1941 graduate of Clover High School. Mr. Faulkner was a member of Bethany ARP Church, where he served as president of the Sunday school class and as a deacon and elder.

Surviving are his wife, Edith D. Faulkner; two sons, Jimmy Faulkner and Paul Faulkner, both of Clover; two daughters, Margaret Rhyne Jr. of Clover and Mary Ellen Whitaker of Charlotte; his sister, Rachel F. Falls of York; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford Sons Funeral Home.

Corrine H. Woods

CHESTER - Mrs. Corrine H. Woods, 65, of 2365 Baton Rouge Road died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Hope officiating and the Revs. David Rice, Earl Stringfellow, George Lowry, William Abell, George Sims, J.D. McClurkin, James Good, McKinley Woods and Jerry Friday assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Woods was the daughter of the late Jefferson Head and Agnes Simpson Head. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess, past president of the Missionary Society, member of the Woods Star of Bethlehem Order of the Eastern Star No. 320 and a member of the hymn choir. She retired from the Chester County school district in food service.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Woods of the home and Odell Woods of Chester; three daughters, Clemetine Dye and Gloria Woods, both of the home, and Bronetta Johnson of Carlisle; her nephew whom she raised, Jefferson Head of Chester; her brother, Johnny B. Head of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Flossie Hardin of Chester and Patricia Truly of Petersburg, Va.; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Eastern Star Rites will be from 7 to 8 tonight at Kings' Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St. in Chester. The body may be viewed from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Elfrieda Downey

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Elfrieda Goeddertz Downey, 90, of 1611 Constitution Blvd. died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at Eden Gardens.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anne Catholic Church, with Father William Pentis officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Baton Rogue, La.

Mrs. Downey was a daughter of the late Otto Goeddertz and Martha Goeddertz. She was the widow of Robert Lloyd Downey Sr. Mrs. Downey was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church since 1983. She was a avid bridge and yahtze player.

Surviving are her son, Robert L. Downey Jr. of Roanoke, Texas; her daughter, Patricia D. Gregory of Chattanooga, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The Vigil will be 6:30 tonight followed by visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bass Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Bill and Terry Gregory, 4053 Elks Park Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Memorials may be made to the St. Anne Catholic Church, 1694 Bird St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Cecil Gleaton Sr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Cecil Lamar Gleaton Sr., 77, of 1555 Hillcrest Ave. died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dale Roach officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Leary, Ga., Mr. Gleaton was a son of the late James D. Gleaton and Lula Mason Gleaton. He was a retired security guard for Springs Industries and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, trustee and bus driver. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Robertson Gleaton; three sons, Cecil Gleaton Jr. and Dennis Gleaton, both of Lancaster and Jeffery Gleaton of the home; three daughters, Sandra Catoe of Kershaw, Wanda Armstrong of Lancaster and Carol Luddy of Charlotte; his brother, Carl Gleaton of Dowell, Ill.; his sister, Ione Sheffield of Leary, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends form 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.
