Beatrice Hammond

LANCASTER - Mrs. Beatrice Clark Hammond, 83, of 2173 Great Falls died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Mahaffey Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, with William Purvis officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Winnsboro, Mrs. Hammond was a daughter of the late Ernest Clark and Mary Elizabeth Clark. She was the widow of the late Mills F. Hammond. A homemaker, she was a member of the Church of Christ Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda Joyce Hammond of Lancaster; her son, Thomas Edward Hammond of Irvin, Texas; her brother, Leroy Clark of Lancaster; and her sister, Virginia Peay of Chester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Jackie Hartis

YORK - Mr. Jackie Hartis, 35, of 6291 Old York Road died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Union Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be at Five Forks Cemetery.

Mr. Hartis was a son of the late Jack Hartis and Polly Tinker Hartis Patterson. He was a welder and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Grace Hartis of the home; two sons, Michael Hartis and Robert Hartis, both of York; his brother, Jamie Hartis of Rock Hill; and his sister, Kathy Howard of Pageland.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Sutton Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jim and Bea Suratt, 832 Lombardy Road, Rock Hill.

Joe David Porter

SHARON - Mr. Joe David "Bud" Porter, 63, of 350 Canupp Road died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Porter Family Cemetery, with the Revs. Dewey Fowler and Randy Smith officiating.

A native of Union County, Mr. Porter was a son of Josie Belk Porter Fowler and the late William Roy "Bill" Porter. The former owner and operator of Joe Porter Paint Co., he was a member of the First Church of Acts of Chester. He was a Mason and was a volunteer firefighter.

Surviving in addition to his mother, of Jonesville, are his wife, Evelyn Campbell Porter of the home; his daughter, Donna Dillingham of Sharon; his son, William David Porter of Sharon; three sisters, Nancy Clayton of Jonesville, Betty Faye Dabbs and Hazel Horne, both of Union; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Holcombe Funeral Home, 310 West South St., Union, and at other times at the home of Nancy Clayton, 515 N. Main St., Jonesville, and at the home of his brother-in-law Walter Campbell, 221 Canupp Road, Sharon.

Ann Hinson

GREAT FALLS - Mrs. Ann McKeown Hinson, 79, of 19 Elm St. died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at her home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Greenlawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Larry Roberts officiating.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Hinson was a daughter of the late O'Neal McKeown and Margaret Dixon McKeown. She attended the public schools of Chester County. Retired from J. P. Stevens Co., she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Willie S. Hinson Jr.; her son, W.S. Hinson of Great Falls; her daughter, Margaret Hinson of Great Falls; her brother, Ed Dixon of Greenville; two sisters, Frances Black and Sara Dickerson, both of Great Falls; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Robert Johnson Jr.

KERSHAW - Mr. Robert Edgar Johnson Jr., 83, of 8617 Kershaw-Camden Highway died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel, with the Revs. John Davis and R. Edgar Horton officiating. Burial will be at Kershaw City Cemetery.

A native of Heath Springs, he was a son of the late Robert Edgar Johnson Sr. and Ellen Bailey Johnson.

Retired from Daniel Construction Co., Mr. Johnson was a member of Thorn Hill Baptist Church and the men's adult Sunday school class. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 17 in Camden.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Sowell Johnson; three daughters, Shelbia Lockamy of Bishopville and Nancy Horton and Pauline Williams, both of Kershaw; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Jimmy and Pauline Williams, 3810 Kershaw-Camden Highway, Kershaw.

Kathleen Nivens

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mrs. Kathleen Edwards Nivens, 88, formerly of 410 E. Eighth Ave., died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Gastonia Village.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Armstrong Memorial Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Leonard Bumgardner and Bruce Huffstetler officiating. Burial will be at Hollywood Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Edwards was a daughter of the late Thomas Edwards and Minnie Hunter Edwards. She was the widow of William Boyd Nivens Sr. She was a graduate of Appalachian State Teacher's College and was a retired teacher from Chapel Grove Elementary School, where she taught for more than 35 years. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Cappa Honorary Teachers Sorority, the Lucille Tatum Home Demonstration Club, the Literary Council and was instrumental in forming tutoring sessions for returning veterans, now known as the GED program. She was a member of Armstrong Memorial Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years, where she was a deacon, elder, former Sunday school teacher and bible moderator.

Surviving are her son, Jerry D. Nivens of Blacksburg; her daughter, Phyllis Lineberger of Gastonia, N.C.; two brothers, M.T. Edwards Jr. of Rock Hill and Bobby Edwards of Waycross, Ga.; three sisters, Alice E. Scoggins, Ruby E. Cornwell and Hattie E. Biggers, all of Rock Hill; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at McLean Funeral Directors in Gastonia.

J.T. Rollings

LANCASTER - Mr. J.T. Rollings, 69, of 1499 Winthrop Ave. died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at his home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Plyler officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mr. Rollings was a son of the late Luther Jackson Rollings and Mary Elizabeth Threatt Rollings. A retired supervisor for Springs Industries, he was a member of Temple Baptist Church, was a Mason with the Hart Masonic Lodge No. 380 and served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Wood Rollings; two sons, James Jackson "Jack" Rollings and Robert Wayne Rollings, both of Lancaster; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster.

Ernestine Alstaugh

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ernestine Porter Alstaugh of 310 Rolling Ridge died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hebron Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Robertson officiating, assisted by Revs. Herbert Crump, Z.B. Wells and other ministers. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Union County, Mrs. Alstaugh was a daughter of Ernest Ralph Porter and Annie Mae Bell Porter of Rock Hil. She joined Mark Hill Baptist Church in Jonesville at an early age. Later, she was affiliated with Dupage AME Zion Church in Naperville, Ill., and Mount Hebron Baptist Church in Rock Hill.

She attended the public schools of Union and York counties. She was a 1964 graduate of Emmettt Scott High School. She then graduated from Barber-Scotia College in Concord, N.C. She was a supervisor with Lucent Technologies in Naperville, Ill.

Mrs. Alstaugh was a former member of the board of trustees of Barber-Scotia College. She was a York County Adult Literacy volunteer. She was a member of the York chapter of Junior Achievement and a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her brother, Larry D. Porter of Rock Hill; four sisters, Bessie R. Gallman of Brooklyn, N.Y., Alice D. Smalls and Mazing Porter, both of Winnsboro, and Linda M. Agurs of Rock Hill.

The body can be viewed from 6 to 7 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home. She will be placed in the church at noon. The family will receive friends at 786 Laney Terrace, Rock Hill.

Willie Gaston

NORTH CHARLESTON - Mr. Willie Paul "Smiley" Gaston, 54, of 4760 Upjohn Road died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Roper Alliance Hospital in Charleston.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Ararat AME Zion Church in Richburg, with the Rev. Tommy Ellison presiding and the Rev. Rosalind Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mr. Gaston was a son of the late Tarrance Gaston and Bertha Crane Gaston. He was employed for 16 years at Island Construction Co. in Charleston as a heavy equipment operator, and he was also a truck driver. He was a member of the Mount Ararat AME Zion Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Pruitt Gaston; three sisters, Jessie Mae Heath and Annie Bell Caldwell, both of Great Falls, and Jessie Lee Heath of Fort Lawn; two brothers, Charles Gaston of Lancaster and Nathaniel Gaston of Great Falls; his stepdaughter, Jacqueline Lloyd of Flint, Mich.; five other step-daughters; his stepson; and three step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Washington Funeral Home in Great Falls and at other times at the home of his niece, Cora Ann Barber at 46 Pine St. in Great Falls.

Washington Funeral Home is in charge.

Ernestine Thompson

LANCASTER - Mrs. Ernestine Adams Thompson, 79, of 1135 Hampton Grace Ave. died Monday, March 27, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at White Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Bobby Bailey officiating and the Revs. Elton Lane and N.J. Neely assisting. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Fountain Inn, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late Thomas Earl Adams and Martha Carrie Proctor Thompson She was retired from Springs Industries, Lancaster plant. She was a member of White Springs Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and GAs Sunbeams and was a member of the choir.

Surviving are her husband, Harrell Thompson; her son, Steven H. Thompson of the home; her daughter, Janice Varney of Lancaster; her sister, Asilee McCoy of Honea Path; four grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hartley Funeral Home. The body will be taken home at 9 a.m. Thursday and remain there until 2 p.m.

Grace Eubanks

GAFFNEY - Mrs. Grace Beatrice Waters Eubanks, 95, of 306 Beaver Ridge Road died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Beaverdam Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Goforth, Bobby Cable and Clarence Hampton officiating. Burial will be at Frederick Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Eubanks was a daughter of the late Jim Waters and Susan Queen Waters. She was the widow of Clarence Dewey Eubanks. She was a retired textile employee and a charter member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Bobby Gene Eubanks, C.D. "Ronnie" Eubanks and Kenneth Eubanks, all of Gaffney; two daughters, Ruth Thompson of Gaffney and Peggy Montgomery of Rock Hill; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.

Francis Hough

LANCASTER - Mr. Francis Madison "Scoop" Hough, 88, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at West Side Cemetery, with the Rev. Roy Barnes officiating.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Hough was a son of the late Benjamin Clyburn Hough and Emma Funderburk Hough. He was the widower of Frances Bowen Hough. A retired jeweler and Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of First Baptist Church.

Mr. Hough also was a member of the American Legion, Lancaster County School Board, First Citizens Bank Board and was a charter member of the Lancaster Rotary Club. He coached Dixie Youth baseball and American Legion baseball.

Surviving are two sons, Phillip B. Hough of Lancaster and Francis "Mat" Hough Jr. of Charlotte; three grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will be at the home of his son, Phillip Hough, 1798 Windsor Drive, Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 300 S. Market St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Arlington Jans

COLUMBIA - Mr. Arlington Clayton Jans, 64, of Sharon died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at the Dorn VA Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Service in Gastonia, N.C., with the Rev. Chip McArthur officiating. Burial will be private.

A native of North Dakota, Mr. Jans was a son of the late John Jans and Katherine Jans. He was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church in McConnells and was an Air Force veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Ethel Webb Jans of Bessemer City, N.C.; two sons, David Jans of High Shoals, N.C., and Daniel Jans of Bessemer City; two daughters, Rose Pheifer of Cherryville, N.C., and Tina Adams of Bessemer City; two brothers, Leonard Jans of Toledo, Ohio, and Otto Jans of New Jersey; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
