Ralph McGee

LANCASTER - Mr. Ralph Willard McGee, 57, of 3187 Taxahaw Road died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Revs. Kenneth Wrenn and Bill Parker officiating. Burial will be at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. McGee was a son of Julia Elizabeth Bailey McGee and the late Willard Smiley McGee. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and the Stafford Graham American Legion Post No. 31.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Sadie Black McGee; his daughter, Stacey Lynn McGee of Lancaster; and his sister, Linda McGee Arant of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his mother, Julia B. McGee, 3197 Taxahaw Road, Lancaster.

Essie Mickel

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Essie Barber Mickel of 1121 Pearson Drive died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Beverly Health Care.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roderick Pen-dleton officiating and the Revs. Ronald Broome, Walter B. White and Leroy McCrea assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. Mickel was a daughter of the late Richard Barber and Laura Barber. She was the widow of David Mickel Sr. She was a charter member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member. She sang in the Hymn Choir, served as president of the Missionary Society and assisted with forming the first black Boy Scout Troop No. 306.

In 1961, she was named Den Mother of the Year by the troop. She helped establish a gospel choir at Beverly Heath Care Center, while she was a resident there.

Surviving are four sons, David D. Mickel Jr. and Thomas Mickel, both of District Heights, Md., Oday Mickel of Jacksonville, Fla., and Divinity Mickel of Spartanburg; three daughters, Robbie Boulware and Daisy M. Chisholm, both of Rock Hill, and Dr. Lizzie M. Austin of Burlington, N.C.; 25 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

The body will be taken to the church at noon Saturday.

Bill Milling Jr.

BIG PINE, Fla. - Mr. John William "Bill" Milling Jr., 60, of Big Pine died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Fishermen's Hospital in Marathon, Fla.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Dr. T. Mark Verdery officiating.

A native of Atlanta, Mr. Milling was a son of the late John William Milling and Frances Johnson Milling. He attended Wofford College and earned his bachelors of arts degree from the Atlanta School of the Arts in 1964. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill.

Mr. Milling spent most of his career in hotel management and worked with Hyatt Corp. He was general manager of motels in Lincolnwood, Ill., Birmingham, Ala., and Winston-Salem, N.C. He was director of University Hotel and Conference Facilities at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill from 1980 to 1984. He moved to Oak Island where he started Bill Milling Real Estate. He was a member of the South Port Oak Island Chamber of Commerce and the Brunswick County Board of Realtors.

Mr. Milling retired to Big Pine in 1994, where he was a volunteer for the National Wildlife Refuge System and put in more than 5,000 volunteer hours. He was awarded the prestigious 1999 Volunteer of the Year Award given by the National Wildlife Refuge Association and the National Audubon Society at the North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in San Francisco.

Surviving is his wife, Jackie Lasley Milling of Oak Island.

Paula Moffatt

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Paula Ann Patterson Moffatt, 33, of 11318 Fox Hill Drive, formerly of Texas, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at University Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Chestnut Grove AME Zion Church in Chester, with the Rev. Ralph Cunningham officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Willis, Texas, Mrs. Moffatt was employed as a customer representative at Spring PCS. She was a former member of Joshua Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas. She later joined Chestnut Grove AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the usher board, the YAMS, the Sunday school department and the children's choir.

Mrs. Moffatt attended Southwest High School in San Antonio and York Technical College.

Surviving are her husband, Mitchell Moffatt; her son, Mitchell Moffatt Jr.; two daughters, Maleka Moffatt and Kiara Moffatt; her sister, Lakeshia Davis of Charlotte; two brothers, Frank Davis of Fort Hood, Texas, and Urannius Davis of San Antonio; and her paternal grandfather, Johnny Andrews of Texas.

The family is at the home of Sammy and Mary Moffatt, 2112 Saluda Road, Chester.

Viewing will be Saturday and Sunday at Denton Funeral Home.

Wayne Robbins

ROCK HILL - Mr. Loy Wayne Robbins, 59, of 1934 Franklin St. died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Forest Hills Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Jerry K. Sosebee officiating.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Robbins was a son of the late Loy Burdell Robbins and Violet Ferrell Robbins. He was owner and operator of Wayne Robbins Paint Co. for the past 22 years. He was a lifetime member of the Bearcat Backers. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church, Hejaz Shrine Temple, York County Crescent Shrine Club, Millennium Lodge 2000 ­ The Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Mason of South Carolina, the York Masonic Lodge No. 385 and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 1720.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Holley Robbins; two sons, Andy Robbins and Kevin Robbins, both of Rock Hill; his daughter, Holly Robbins of Charlotte; two grandchildren; and his niece.

Masonic Rites will be 6:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home after which the family will receive friends until 9 p.m. and at other times at the home.

Annie Grier

PLAINFIELD, N.J. - Mrs. Annie B. Armstrong Grier, of 336 Bergen St., formerly of Chester, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, in Plainfield, N.J.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at AAeon Baptist Church in Vauxhall, N.J. Burial will be in New Jersey.

Born in Fairfield County, Mrs. Grier was a daughter of the late Jim Armstrong and Hattie Ford Armstrong. She was a member of AAeon Baptist Church, where she was a choir member, a member of the usher board, and missionary. She was a former member of Black Rock Baptist Church in Chester County. A retired domestic worker, she attended public school in Fairfield County.

She was the widow of T. J. Grier.

Surviving are two daughters, Sylvia Miller of Plainfield, N.J., and Jenell Sanders of Woodbridge, N.J.; her sister, Lillie A. Crosby of Chester; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the Judkins Colonial Home, 428 W. Fourth St. Plain Field, N.J. 07060.

King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., is in charge locally.

Gloria Hoffecker

CLOVER - Mrs. Gloria F. Hoffecker, 62, of 2807 Propst Road died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Jeffrey L. Lingle officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Hoffecker was a daughter of the late Arthur Francis and Annie Mae Hawkins Francis. She was a retired kitchen designer for Sears Co. and a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her husband, Frank Hoffecker Sr.; her son, Frank Hoffecker of Ohio; her brother, Jack Francis of Melbourne, Fla.; five sisters, Helen F. Alexander of Charlotte, Mary F. Ross of Lake Wylie, Katie F. Wilson of Pinehurst, N.C., Ann F. Bander of Myrtle Beach and Betty Jean F. Cooper of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Epiphany Lutheran Church building fund, P.O. Box 4763, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Ezell Mobley

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ezell Ossie Mobley of Rock Hill died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ronnie L. Baxter officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Mobley was a son of the late Thomas Mobley and Kattie Hood Mobley. He was a member of St. Matthew AME Zion Church and Union Baptist Church. He attended Emmett Scott High School and served in the Navy in World War II. He was a stock clerk at Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. for 32 years until his retirement.

Surviving are his wife, Annie Henderson Mobley; five sons, Ossie L. Mobley, James H. Mobley, Ros E. Mobley, Ernest R. Mobley, all of Babylon, N.Y. and Herbert Legrande of Wingate, N.C.; six daughters, Gwendolyn Kemp and Amelia A. Mobley, both of Wyandanch, N.Y., Carrie J. Mobley of Babylon, Dora M. Saunder, Quienton E. Mobley and Trina A. Mobley, all of Rock Hill; three sisters, Thommie Mae Davis, Addie Kate Mobley and Loutisha Mobley, all of Rock Hill; 30 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Clemons Funeral Home.

Paula Moffatt

Jack Mullins

COLUMBIA - Dr. Jack S. Mullins, 66, of Columbia died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at home.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

A native of Cherokee County, Dr. Mullins was a son of the late Dever Victor Mullins and Mary Talley Mullins. He was a graduate of Simpsonville High School in 1950. He earned his bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Furman University in 1954 and his master's in 1961 and doctorate in 1964 from the University of South Carolina. He was a member of the Hand and Torch honorary scholastic organization at Furman and a member of Phi Beta Kappa at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Mullins was selected as a fellow for specialized study at Colonial Williamsburg at the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Colonial Williamsburg in 1961.

Dr. Mullins served in the Army in 1955 to 1957 as a Russian linguist in the Army Security Agency. He taught at Camden High School, Houston Baptist College in Houston and University of Richmond in Richmond, Va.

He served as director of South Carolina Higher Education Facilities Commission from 1967 to 1973 and director of the State Human Resources Division, S.C. Budget and Control Board from 1973 to 1985. He was employed with Blue Cross/Blue Shield beginning in 1985 and retired in 1999 as vice president of human resources.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Bruce Mullins; two sons, Robert Bruce Mullins of Columbia and Michael Allan Mullins of Spartanburg; two daughters, Michele Ann Neal of Rock Hill and Melissa Annette Slagle of Columbia; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

J. Kenneth Padget

RICHBURG - Mr. J. Kenneth Padget, 73, of 3344 Lancaster Highway died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Dorn Veteran's Administration Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Union ARP Church, with the Revs. Allen Derrick and Richard Webber officiating. Burial will be at Union Cemetery.

A native of Rodman, Mr. Padget was a son of the late Travis Pierce Padget and Ida Watts Padget. He was a graduate of Oakley Hall High School and Erskine College. A U.S. Navy and Air Force veteran, he was a member of Union ARP Church.

Surviving are his sister, Isabella "Isy" Frick of Chapin.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Bethia Reid

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Bethia Westbrook Reid, 92, of 1330 India Hook Road died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Westminster Health Care Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Union ARP Church in Richburg, with the Revs. Dr. Robert J. Robinson and Rob Patrick officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in Chester, Mrs. Reid was a daughter of the late James Baxter and Janie Caldwell Westbrook. She was president and charter member of the Clover Women's Club, president of Clover ARP Church Women's Society, life member of the Women of the Church, honor member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and associate member of First ARP Church in Rock Hill.

Mrs. Reid taught school in Richburg and Clover and was a 1929 graduate of Erskine College. She was the widow of William Gill Reid.

Surviving are her daughter, Jane Reid Grier of Hilton Head Island; her sister, Isabella Westbrook; her grandson and three great-grandchildren.
