Pernella Bryant

CHESTER - Mrs. Pernella A. "Mama Sugar" Worthy Bryant, 87, of 2771 Pilgrim Road died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, with the Rev. Curtis Washington officiating and Pastor Keith Taylor assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Bryant was a daughter of the late Columbus Worthy and Lucinda Worthy. She attended the public schools of Chester County and was a retired domestic worker.

She was a member of the Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Choir and Senior Missionary Circle. Mrs. Bryant was also a member of the order of Eastern Star Bright Light Chapter No. 146, and the AP Society No. 17. She was the widow of Dice Bryant.

Surviving are her son, Joseph Worthy of Chester; two daughters, Lula Smith and Pauline Bryant, both of Chester; her sister, Cuevester Jeter of Chester; her cousin, Esper Robinson of Gastonia, N.C., who was raised as her brother; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Eastern Star Rites will be 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at King's Funeral Home. The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester is in charge.

Robert Reynolds

LANCASTER - Mr. Robert Frank Reynolds, 74, of 292 Cliff Road died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at East Side Baptist Church, with the Revs. Joel Rhyner and Stuart Snow officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Charlotte, Mr. Reynolds was a son of the late Ollie Reynolds and Bertha Reynolds. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, was a Mason and was a member of the Hart Lodge No. 380 and the Hejaz Shrine Temple.

Surviving are his wife, Annie Reynolds; his son, Randy Reynolds of Lancaster; his daughter, Frances Catoe of Lancaster; his brother. Ollie Reynolds Jr. of Lancaster; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

Memorials may be made to East Side Baptist Church, 1180 Garnett Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Nora Caldwell

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Nora "Nonnie Bell" Roddey Caldwell died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ray Thompson officiating and the Revs. Osbey Roddey and Johnny Caldwell Jr. assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in York County, Mrs. Caldwell was a daughter of the late Jacob Roddey and Suzie W. Roddey. She was retired from First Federal Savings and Loan. She attended public schools of York County and was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, where she sang in the hymn choir, was secretary for the usher board for 42 years and was a member of the missionary society. Mrs. Caldwell was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 291, a member of Starr Court No. 5, a member of the Golden Circle and a Daughter of Isis Menzel Court No. 153.

Surviving are five daughters, Parthenia C. Jones and Barbara C. Paige, both of Newark, N.J., Claretta C. King of Irvington, N.J., Valerie C. Brownlee of Springdale, Md., and Marilyn Caldwell of Rock Hill; eight sons, Willie C. Caldwell, Max A. Caldwell, Roddey B. Caldwell, Maynard E. Caldwell, the Rev. Herman J. Caldwell and Dennis J. Caldwell, all of Rock Hill, Clifford L. Caldwell of Plymouth, N.C., and Barron F. Caldwell of Chandler, Ariz.; 31 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Gerald Gainey

ROCK HILL - Mr. Gerald "Jerry" Scott Gainey, 47, of 1110 McKinnon Drive died Sunday, April 2, 2000, in Brinkley, Ark.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Steve Hogg and Dr. Sollie Hicks officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Gainey was a son of Doris Gainey and the late Carl Gainey. He was a self-employed businessman and was a member of First Baptist Church. He graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1971 and from Mars Hill College in 1975.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his daughter, Kristen Ledford of Rock Hill; and two brothers, Carl Gainey and Ernest Gainey, both of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and other times at the home of his mother, Doris Gainey at 913 Cornell Drive.

William Hoke Sr.

QUINBY - Mr. William Robertson Hoke Sr., 72, of 200 Quinby Lane died Sunday, April 2, 1000, in a Florence hospital.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Christ Episcopal Church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Hoke was a son of the late Wade Hampton Hoke and Marion Baker Hoke. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was a founding member of Quinby United Methodist Church and was a member of the original Quinby Town Council. Mr. Hoke was a member of the Mecca Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Bodies, the Omar Shrine Temple, the Pee Dee Shrine Club and the board of directors of Carolina Bank and Trust Co. of Darlington. Mr. Hoke was president of Pee Dee Drywall Supply Inc. of Quinby.

Surviving are his wife, Jackie Sturgis Hoke; his son, Billy Hoke of Quinby; three daughters, Barbara Parks of Florence and Leslie Green and Jan Buell, both of Lexington; three sisters, Edith Patterson of Whitewater, Wis., Ann Sheldon of Virginia Beach, Va., and Frances Long of Carlisle; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Quinby United Methodist Church, 1247 E. Ashby Road, Quinby, SC 29506.

Lewis Keith Jr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Lewis William Keith Jr., 78, of 1531 Greenwood Lane died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at Ebenezer Nursing Home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Wade Cogan officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Paris, Texas, Mr. Keith was a son of the late Lewis W. Keith Sr. and Eula Dishman Keith. A retired teacher and coach, Mr. Keith was a graduate of North Texas State University and received his master's degree in 1952 from Sul Ross University. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he saw action in Europe and Africa. He was an avid ham radio operator, was a member of the York County Model Airplane Club and was a member of the Faith Assembly. He was the widower of Betty Ruth Brooks Keith.

Surviving are his daughter, Kathy Keith of the home; and his sister, Virginia L. Keith of Tucker, Ga.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Beverly Steiner

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Beverly Jean Steiner, 61, of 319 N. Confederate Ave. died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at home.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Sosebee officiating.

A native of Marion, N.Y., Mrs. Steiner was a daughter of the late Donald Croucher and Thelma Smith Croucher. She was a counselor for the York County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs. She attended Northside Baptist Church and was a member of Singles Limited in Rock Hill.

Surviving are two sons, Timothy James Doucet of New York and Thomas Elbert Doucet of York; five daughters, Jacqueline Doucet Chamberlin of Salisbury, N.C., Donna Jean Leddick, Lucinda Mary Hebrst and Suzanne Marine Hollenbeck, all of Rock Hill, and Christine Louise Prizzi of New York; two brothers, Bruce M. Croucher of New York and Barry Lee Croucher of Virginia; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Bobby Black Sr.

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mr. Bobby Allen Black Sr., 70, of 304 Oakwood Circle died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Carothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at Hollywood Cemetery.

A native of Gaston County, N.C., Mr. Black was a son of the late Burnie Black and Evelyn Allen Black. He was the widower of Lucille Moore Black. Mr. Black was a retired graphics printer for Aladin Graphics in Charlotte. He was a golfer, gardener, fisherman and a guitarist for the Ordanaires. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are three sons, Danny A. Black of Gastonia, Bobby Black Jr. of Dallas and Joseph Black of Bloomville, Mo.; two daughters, Anita Whiddon of Gastonia and Rebecca Pate of York; two brothers, Burnie Black Jr. and Tommy Black, both of Gastonia; his sister, Mary Nella Pennington of Gastonia; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Carothers Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

William Cleere III

YORK - Mr. William Wadkins Cleere III, 84, of 111 S. Congress St. died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at J.T. Morriss Sons Funeral Home in Hopewell, Va., with the Rev. Alex Roberts officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, Va.

A native of Dora, Ala., Mr. Cleere was a son of the late W.W. Cleere Jr. and Velma Lee Moore Cleere. He was the widower of Eleanor Bridges Cleere and Helen Marks Cleere.

Mr. Cleere was retired from Firestone Inc., where he worked in the maintenance department. He was a member of Dupont Lodge No. 289 Masonic Lodge and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his daughter, Connie Moore Hubbard of Sharon; his sister, Mary Cleere Lindsey of Hopewell, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Frederick Hayes

SPARTANBURG - Mr. Frederick Brevard Hayes, 65, of 6000 Crystal Drive died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Revs. A. Mickey Fisher and Lisa Creech Bledsoe. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

A native of Monroe, N.C., who was raised in Rock Hill, Mr. Hayes was a son of the late Stacy B. Hayes and Ethel Yandle Hayes. He was a 1957 graduate of Wofford College and was retired from Van Waters and Rogers. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was an Army veteran. He was the widower of Joan Harvey Hayes.

Surviving are his wife, the Rev. Mary J. Cartledge-Hayes; three daughters, Deborah J. Hayes of Pensacola, Fla., Tara A. Flowers of Seneca and Jennifer F. Libby of Charlotte; two sons, Frederick Brevard Hayes Jr. of Manhattan Beach, Calif. and Steve H. Hayes of Columbia; his sister, Vernice Nies of Rock Hill; two brothers, Melvin Hayes of Wilmington, N.C., and Bruce Hayes of Matthews, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Josephine Cude

SUMTER - Mrs. Josephine E. Painter Cude, 61, of 303 Haynsworth St. died Monday, March 20, 2000, at home.

A memorial service was March 27, 2000, at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael Jones officiating. Entombment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.

A native of Troy, N.Y., Mrs. Cude was a daughter of the late Joseph E. Painter and Lillian Karsh Painter. She was a graduate of Albany Medical Center School of Nursing. She worked as a public health nurse in Albany, N.Y. and served as a lieutenant in the Air Force at Wilford Hall Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She was active in the Red Cross, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She taught Sunday School and was a charter member of Sumter Christian Charities. In 1989, Mrs. Cude founded Personal Care of Sumter Inc. to provide personal care aides to homebound patients.

Surviving are her husband, Michael W. Cude; her son, Daniel H.H. Cude of Columbia; two daughters, Laura Cude Greene of Rock Hill and Ann Michelle Cude of Sumter; two brothers, Samuel R. Painter and Dennis J. Painter, both of Middletown, N.Y.; three sisters, Trudy Krouse of Glenmont, N.Y., Jane Clift of Milton, Wis. and Nancy Yerkes of Ellenville, N.Y.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society Regional Office, 28 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Chase Elkins

ROCK HILL - Chase Alexander Elkins, the infant son of Tiffany Dawn Elkins, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Jerry Allen officiating.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his maternal grandparents, Tommy and Connie Elkins of Rock Hill; his great-grandparents, Melvin and Barbara Elkins of Rock Hill; and his great-great-grandmother, Thelma West of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends after the service.
