Hal Pundt

EDISTO ISLAND - Mr. Hal Pundt, 66, of 8551 Pope Landing, formerly of Rock Hill, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident April 7 in Charleston. He died at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of our Saviour in Rock Hill, with the Revs. Tom Carter and Weyd Camp officiating.

The son of Betty Nasworthy of Wadley, Ga., Mr. Pundt retired after 30 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Rock Hill. He and his wife, Dr. Joan Pundt, lived on Edisto Island, where they built their retirement home. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two brothers, Joe Pundt of Wadley, Ga., and Ernest "Pete" Pundt of Monck's Corner; three sons, Harold Pundt Jr. and Steve Pundt, both of Rock Hill, and Ray Pundt of Lexington, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walt Schrader, 733 Colonial Drive, Rock Hill.

Joan Pundt

EDISTO ISLAND - Dr. Joan Schrader Pundt, 63, of 8551 Pope Landing, formerly of Rock Hill, died Friday, April 7, 2000, in an automobile accident in Charleston.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of our Saviour in Rock Hill, with the Revs. Tom Carter and Weyd Camp officiating.

Dr. Pundt received her undergraduate and master's degree from Winthrop University, and she completed her doctorate at the University of South Carolina. She taught in Rock Hill-area schools for 35 years, retiring in 1993 from Sullivan Middle School. She taught at Dalton State College in Dalton, Ga., for five years. Dr. Pundt retired on Edisto Island, where she began teaching elementary-school children in Cottageville. She was active at Trinity Episcopal Church on Edisto Island, enjoyed singing with the community chorus, gardening and was active with the local artist's guild.

Surviving are three sons, Harold Pundt Jr. and Steve Pundt, both of Rock Hill, and Ray Pundt of Lexington, N.C.; her father, Walter Schrader of Rock Hill; her sister, Elizabeth Johns of Rock Hill; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walt Schrader, 733 Colonial Drive, Rock Hill.

Alma Bates

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Alma Tanner Bates, 102, of 1957 Eden Terrace died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Tom Patterson officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

A native of Quitman, Ark., Mrs. Bates was a daughter of the late William F. Tanner and Delphia Herring Tanner. She was a member of Woodhaven Baptist Church. As an educator, Mrs. Bates taught in the same one-room schoolhouse where she went to school. After her marriage, she left teaching and became a homemaker. She was the widow of Martin Wilson Bates.

Surviving are her son, Martin William "Bill" Bates of Rock Hill; her sister, Bernice Bearden of Quitman; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son, 531 Meadowbrook Lane.

Simon Carnes

LANCASTER - Mr. Simon Roy Carnes, 84, of 4897 Pageland Highway died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, with the Revs. Kenny Coker and Donald Coppedge officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Kershaw County, Mr. Carnes was a son of the late Simon M. Carnes and Obelia Sims Carnes. He was a member and deacon of Bethlehem Baptist Church, was a 50-year member of Wannamaker Masonic Lodge No. 329, and was a member of the Scottish and York Rites and the Hejaz Shrine Temple. He retired from Springs Industries - Grace Bleachery as a supervisor in the packing department. He was the widower of Willard Kate Carnes Carnes, Mazie Belk Plyler Carnes and Ruth Hunter Byrd Carnes.

Surviving are his daughter, Barbara Ann Knight of Lancaster; his stepson, Danny Plyler of Lancaster; two stepdaughters, Kathy Knight of Lancaster and Pauline Gardner of Heath Springs; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hartley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church, Playground Fund, 1841 N. Rocky River Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Harold Carter

ROCK HILL - Mr. Harold Thomas Carter Sr., 68, of 721 N. Confederate Ave. died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Northside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Dr. Jerry Sosebee and Don Hebert officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of Madison County, Ga., Mr. Carter was a son of the late Howell E. Carter and Carria Whitworth Carter. He was a retired deputy fire chief with the Rock Hill Fire Department after 30 years of service. A member of Northside Baptist Church, he was a past deacon and taught the preschoolers Sunday school class for many years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 385 and a member of the York County Hejaz Shriners Club.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Knight Carter; his son, Harold T. "Hal" Carter of Nashville, Tenn.; his brother, Ernest Carter of Rock Hill; and four sisters, Winnie Mae Keenan, Louise Keenan and Marie Roberts, all of Chester, and Shirley Moore of Cosby, Tenn.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Greene Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church, 1140 Curtis St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Joanna Hamm

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Joanna Teresa Hamm, 67, of 4505 Saluda Road died Friday, April 21, 2000, at Beverly Health Care.

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Monday at the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Rock Hill.

A native of New York, Mrs. Hamm was a daughter of the late Gerald Smith. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Rock Hill and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross. She retired from TXL Structural as an accountant.

Surviving are her son, Michael Mortera of Arizona; two daughters, Michelle Marie Irwin of Rock Hill and Terri Anne Cowgill of Texas; many brothers and sisters; and her grandchild.

Bass Funeral Home is in charge.

Uchenna Johnson

CHESTER - Mr. Uchenna Adagogo "Go-Go" Johnson, 22, of 899 Pinckney Road died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. W.E. Page officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mr. Johnson was a son of Patricia Johnson of Chester and the Rev. Denorris Byers of Kings Mountain, N.C. He was an employee of Living Stone H&S Company of Charlotte. He attended Chester High School and York Technical College and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Johnson was an organ donor.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his son Sharmare Jones of Fort Mill; two daughters, Detreecia Johnson of Fort Mill and Stefanie Crank of Chester; his brother, Mario Johnson of Chester; and two sisters, Detreecia Byers of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Drenda Byers of Kings Mountain.

The family will receive friends at the home.

The body will lie in state at the church at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

James Joyner

BETHUNE - Mr. James Jarrett Joyner, 76, of 2250 Charlie Johnson Road died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at Kershaw County Medical Center in Camden.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at Timrod Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Bateman officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Bethune, Mr. Joyner was a son of the late Grover Cleveland Joyner and Docia Bowers Joyner. He was a member of Timrod Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Training Union Director and choir member. He was retired from DuPont and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline Bryson Joyner; two sons, Wayne J. Joyner and Curtis C. Joyner, both of Bethune; three daughters, Paulette Roberts and Patricia Young, both of Bethune and Myrtle Sullivan of Kershaw; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Mount Pisgah-Buffalo Rescue Squad, 2099 John Munn Road, Jefferson, SC 29718.

Edward Lipford

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Edward Richard Lipford, 68, of 4661 Hurst Road in Callahan, Fla., formerly of Great Falls, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Barron Funeral Home in Chester, with the Revs. Frankie Porter and Reggie Parker officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.

A native of Great Falls, Mr. Lipford was a son of the late Charles L. Lipford and Lottie Morrison Lipford McCullough. A member of Gray Gables Baptist Church in Callahan, he was a retired diesel mechanic with Daniel Construction Co. He attended Chester County schools.

Surviving are his wife, Iris Thomas Lipford; two sons, Donald Lipford of Jacksonville, Fla., and Stanley Lipford of Maiden, N.C.; his daughter, Melissa Bielling of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Charles Lipford and George Lipford, both of Chester; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home in Chester.

James Mills

ROCK HILL - Mr. James H. Mills, 88, of 1131 Charlotte Ave. died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Gold Hill Baptist Church in York, with the Rev. George McCoy officiating. Burial will be at Gold Hill Baptist Church.

Mr. Mills was a retired truck driver for the city of Rock Hill. A member of Gold Hill Baptist Church, he was a deacon and Sunday school superintendent.

Surviving are his wife, Mary R. Mills; five sons, Eddie Mills, Henry Mills and Jerry Mills, all of Rock Hill, Johnny Mills of Gastonia, N.C., and Charles A. Mills of Niceville, Fla.; two daughters, Rosa Mills of the home and Sharon Cherry of Rock Hill; and several grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 tonight at Parker Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Naomi Parker

LANCASTER - Mrs. Naomi Carnes Parker, 94, of 4198 Rowell Road died Friday, April 21, 2000, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tommy Wilkes officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Parker was a daughter of the late James Fletcher Carnes and Flora Elena Smith Carnes. A homemaker, she was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was the widow of Eugene Archie Parker.

Surviving are two sons, Archie Smith Parker and Robert Walter "Bobby" Parker Sr., both of Lancaster; two daughters, Doris Johnson of McColl and Genevieve Parker of Bennettsville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Jerome Parks

ROCK HILL - Mr. Jerome Boyd Parks, 54, of 2221 Rosewood Drive died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Cauthen Funeral Home. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A York native, Mr. Parks was a son of Bertie Biggers Carothers and the late John Floyd Parks. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his stepfather, Frank Carothers of Rock Hill; and his brother, Michael Parks of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at Cauthen Funeral Home and other times at the home of Frank and Bertie Carothers, 5056 Hampton Ridge Road.
