Edmund Hohman

Rock Hill lost a major voice in support of preserving Confederate history with the death of Edmund "Ed" "Bud" Henry Hohman on Thursday.

During the debate over whether the Confederate flag should come down from the Statehouse dome, Hohman could be found in Columbia passing out literature and encouraging people to keep the flag flying. A member of the Confederate States of America Historical Preservation Society, Hohman was a Confederate re-enactor.

Hohman, 56, of 1166 Eisenhower Road died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Bass Funeral Home, with Deacon Jim Hyland officiating. Entombment will be at a later date in Louden Park Cemetery in Baltimore.

A native of Baltimore, Mr. Hohman was the son of Cora Allison of Rock Hill. He served in the Navy as an Electrician Mate 3rd Class Petty Officer, and was honorably discharged in 1968. He worked for Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. as an Installer Repair Tech for 26 years. He was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church. Mr. Hohman was a confederate re-enactor in the Baltimore area and worked on the set of the movie "Gettysburg." He helped with air shows and plane restoration, spending many hours at the Flying Tigers Warbird Museum. He completed a video on the life of the museum's founder, Tom Reilly. He was helping restore a B-25 Bomber.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Deborah Faris Hohman of Rock Hill; his stepfather, Walter Allison of Rock Hill; and his stepsister, Betty Bishop of Gaffney.

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. at Bass Funeral Home.

Justin Burchfield

ROCK HILL - Justin Michael Burchfield, infant son of Summer Dawn Burchfield and Ronnie Taylor, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Dewey Wise officiating.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandparents, Timothy Burchfield and Mary Burchfield, both of Rock Hill; his maternal great-grandmother, Ann DeVore of Columbus, Ohio; his paternal grandmother, Vickie Duncan of Rock Hill; and his paternal great-grandmother, JoAnn Baker of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Hattie Shelby

ROCK HILL - Ms. Hattie Shelby, 62, of 507 Whitner St., died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Chester County, with the Rev. W.W. Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Ms. Shelby was a daughter of the late John Able and Hattie Bell Able. She was the widow of McKinley Heath of Rock Hill. Ms. Shelby attended Chester County public schools. She was a retired nursing assistant and was a member of Cedar Grove AME Zion Church in Chester County.

Surviving are her son, Chris Shelby of Rock Hill; two sisters, Ruth Dickerson and Maggie Houze, both of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday and may be viewed from 4 to 7 tonight at Parker Funeral Home.

Earle Townsend

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Earle Neely Townsend, 89, of 1330 India Hook Road died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Westminster Towers.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, with Dr. William Pender officiating. Burial will be in Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Townsend was a daughter of the late James Thornwell Neely Sr. and Lilly Earle Sadler Neely. She was the widow of George "Doc" Elliott Townsend Sr. She was a graduate of Winthrop Training School and Winthrop College. A lifelong member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Townsend was one of the first two babies to be baptized there. She worked as a bookkeeper for Neely Motor Co. and Welch Motor Co. She was a member of the DAR & DAC and the Perihelion Book Club.

Surviving are two sons, George Elliott Townsend Jr. of Huntsville, Ala., and James Neely Townsend of Rock Hill; her sister, Sadler Neely Carter of Anderson; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the Westminster Towers Community Room and other times at the home of James Townsend, 630 Ascot Ridge Road, Rock Hill.

Walter Washington Jr.

THOMASVILLE, Ga. - Mr. Walter Marion Washington Jr., 72, formerly of Rock Hill, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Archbold Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Allen & Allen Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Oliver officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

A native of Thomasville, Ga., Mr. Washington was a son of the late Walter M. Washington Sr. and Mattie Lou "Hester" Washington. He was the widower of Linda "McCullough" Washington.

Mr. Washington worked for Celanese Fibers Co. in a number of capacities including: design draftsman, electrical engineer, project engineer, maintenance engineer, maintenance area supervisor, utilities superintendent and environmental superintendent. He was an instructor of electrical technology at York Technical College. He was a 1945 graduate of Clemson University, North Carolina State University and Emory University. He served in the Navy from 1945 through 1946. Mr. Washington was a member of the S.C. Water & Pollution Control Association and the Carolina's Air Pollution Control Association, where he served as treasurer, vice president and president. He was a member of the advisory committee for Industrial Electrical and York Technical Education Center. Mr. Washington was on the board of directors for the York County Council on Alcoholism. He was also on the Boy Scouts of America Technical committee and the S.C. State Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the BPO Elks Club, Masons and the American Legion, where he served as vice commander. He was also a member of the Celriver Recreation Association, where he served as vice president and was a member of the steering committee. He was a member of Bold Springs Methodist Church in Cairo, Ga.

Surviving are his wife, Linda M. Washington; two sons, Glen L. Washington of Spokane, Wash., and Jay D. Washington of Las Vegas; and six grandchildren.

Raymond Evans

LANCASTER - Mr. Raymond Elliott Evans, 72, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, with the Rev. Ted Tinker officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at the New Zion United Methodist Church cemetery in New Zion.

A native of New Zion, Mr. Evans was a son of the late Rev. John Elliott Evans and Marie Knight Evans. He was retired from Springs Industries.

Surviving are his son, Jimmy Evans of Chester; his daughter, Diane Evans of Lancaster; two brothers, Thomas Evans of Clayton, Ga., and Walter Evans of Lancaster; and three sisters, Margaret Evans Hunter of Lancaster, Willie Mae Boykin of Mt. Croghan and Elizabeth Phillips of Bennettsville.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel.

Tyreek Foster

BLACKSTOCK - Tyreek Demetris Foster, the 2-week-old son of Erica Feaster and Tyrone Foster of 3035 Keziah Lane died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Monday at Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandfather, Dennis Feaster of Blackstock; his maternal grandmother, Gail Feaster of Blackstock; his paternal grandsparents, Rosie and Johnny B. Foster; his maternal great-grandfather, Willie Feaster of Lancaster; and his maternal great-grandmother, Lizzie Feaster of Blackstock. He was preceded in death by a brother, Tyrone Foster Jr.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Taneesha Jackson

CHARLOTTE - Miss Taneesha D. "Candy" Jackson, 19, of 1019 Franklin Ave., formerly of Chester, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at King's Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ronald McClurkin officiating and the Revs. J. Boulware, Eugene Canty, Paul Long, Moses Lightner and Alonzo Gregory assisting. The burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Miss Jackson was a daughter of Elaine Jackson Osei of Charlotte and a stepdaughter of Atta Osei of Shelby, N.C. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church in Ridgeway where she was a former usher. She was employed by Lee's Living Center in Charlotte, and she attended public schools in Chester and Mecklenburg counties.

Surviving in addition to her mother and stepfather are her aunt and uncle, who raised her, the Rev. Ronald and Florence McClurkin of Chester; and two brothers, Jacques Jackson and Keomki Jackson, both of Charlotte.

The body may be viewed from 3 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the hour of service Monday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of the Rev. Ronald and Florence McClurkin, 127 Carr St., Chester.

Lura Melton

LANCASTER - Mrs. Lura Starnes Melton, 75, of 2477 Kendlewood Drive died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jack A. Nunn and William Graham officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Union County, N.C., Mrs. Melton was a daughter of the late Wilson Cleveland Starnes and Madge Manus Starnes. She was a homemaker, was a member of Pleasant Dale Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star, Antioch Chapter.

Surviving are her husband, W.K. Melton, two sons, Arnold D. Melton of Monroe, N.C., and Ken Melton Jr. of Lancaster; three daughters, Phyllis M. Burgess, Davlyn Rhyner and Joye Ellis, all of Lancaster; her sister, Edith Currie of Wadesboro, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 2477 Kendlewood Drive.

Memorials may be made the Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, 133 S. Potter Road, Lancaster, SC 28720.

Greg Pylant

CLOVER - Mr. Gregory "Greg" Pylant, 37, of 2667 Riverfork Road died Friday, May 26, 2000, in Pomaria.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Monday at Bowling Green Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Bob Abel officiating.

A native of Winnsboro, Mr. Pylant was a son of Vernon J. Pylant and Shirley Bundrick Pylant. He was a Clover High School graduate and was employed by Jacobson Textron in Charlotte. He was an avid outdoorsman and was active in Native American activities and dance customs.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Joanne Elam Pylant; his son, Joshua Pylant of Clover; his brother, Kevin Pylant of Hickory Grove; his sister, Melanie Pylant of York; and his maternal grandmother, Lillian Bundrick of Winnsboro.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Clover Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 214, Clover, SC 29710.

Tyreek Foster

ROCK HILL - Ms. Bernice Crenshaw Herring, 57, of 1123 Steele St., died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Salvation Army Chapel, with Major Robert Butler officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Pineville, N.C., Ms. Herring was a daughter of the late Frank Crenshaw and Lula Crenshaw. She was a homemaker and attended the Salvation Army Chapel.

Surviving are her two brothers, Sandford Crenshaw and Lindsay Crenshaw, both of the home; and her sister, Jacqueline McAteer of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and at other times at 1123 Steele St., Rock Hill.
