Vera Pursley

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Vera Hall Pursley, 90, of 706 E. Main St. died Monday, May 29, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Roy E. Beckham officiating.

Born in Lenior, N.C., Mrs. Pursley was a daughter of the late Wiley Elmer Hall and Ora Izzie Rattz Hall. A member of First ARP Church, she was a member of the United Daugh-ters of the Confederacy, Beaulah Meredith Chapter. Mrs. Pursley was a retired motel manager. She was the widow of William "Bub" Stevenson Pursley.

Surviving are her son, Steve Pursley of Rock Hill; her brother, W.E. Hall of Norfolk, Va.; three sisters, Polly Holroyd, Billie Sherrill and Orene Oates, all of Rock Hill; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and other times at the home of Steve Pursley, 672 E. Main St.

Elaine Ross

COLUMBIA - Ms. Elaine Ross, 41, formerly of Charleston, died Monday, May 29, 2000.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church.

A native of Greensboro, N.C., Ms. Ross was a daughter of Richard H. Ross and Laura Hillhouse Ross. She received a bachelor's degree from the College of Charleston and was attending the University of South Carolina's College of Library Science. A principal dancer with the Charleston Ballet Company and the South Carolina Ballet Theater, she also was a photographer for the Columbia City Ballet. A member of St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, she volunteered at the church and at Hammond School.

Surviving in addition to he parents are her husband, Chris Mills; two daughters, Ross Catherine Mills and Clare Hillhouse Mills, both of Columbia; and her sister, Connie Ross of Salt Lake City.

Memorials may be made to Hammond School, St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church or to a charity of one's choice.

Atrice Sharpe

STATESVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Atrice Marie Sharpe died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Piedmont Village.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Statesville, with the Rev. Dr. J.C. Harris officiating. Burial will be at Siloam AME Zion Church cemetery.

Born in Hartwell, Ga., Mrs. Sharpe was a daughter of the late Willie Latten and Flossie Harper Latten. A homemaker, she was a member of First Baptist Church. She was the widow of Eugene V. Sharpe.

Surviving are her daughter, Bettye Sharpe Tull of Fort Mill; her son, C. Leon Sharpe of Statesville; five sisters, Rosa Lee Rucker of Greensboro, N.C., Flossie Turner of Brooklyn, N.Y., Juanita Wilson of Rock Hill, Ruth Latten of Statesville and Cordeal Cherry of Charlotte; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church.

Janie Templeton

BOONE, N.C. - Mrs. Janie Collins Templeton, 44, of Boone, formerly of Rock Hill, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Watauga Medical Center.

A memorial service will at 7 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Ronald L. Bowie officiating. A reception will follow at the church.

A native of Jamestown, N.C., she was the daughter of Wesley Collins and Joy Dearmin Collins.

She graduated from North State Academy in Hickory, N.C., and Hollins College in Roanoke, Va. Mrs. Templeton was a member and a preschool teacher at First Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of the Boone Service League.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Thomas W. Templeton; two sons, Patrick Templeton and Wesley Templeton, both of the home; her daughter, Elizabeth Templeton of the home; and two brothers, Samuel Collins of Lenoir, N.C., and Wesley E. Collins of Roswell, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Julie Carter, First Presbyterian Church, 663 Howard St., Boone, NC 28607.

Hampton Funeral Service is in charge.

David Becker

FORT MILL - The Rev. David T. Becker, 72, of 112 Forrest St. died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in Charlotte.

The memorial service will be be 7 p.m. Saturday at Fort Mill Church of God, with the Rev. Mark Leonhardt officiating. Burial will be private.

A native of Bethlehem, Pa., the Rev. Becker was the son of the late Raymond J. Becker and Ida Dillman. He retired from Bethlehem Steel and was a retired minister. A U.S. Army veteran, he attended Fort Mill Church of God. He graduated from Full Gospel Bible Institute in Coatesville, Pa.

Surviving are his wife, Jean F. Becker of Fort Mill; his son, David T. Becker Jr. of Fort Mill; two daughters, Jeannie Stair of McConnells and Teri L. Durantte of Fort Mill; two brothers, Raymond Becker and Edward Becker, both of Bethlehem; two sisters, Sadie Stout of Bethlehem and Loretta Becker of Minnesota; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Fort Mill Church of God.

Inez Carnes

LANCASTER - Mrs. Inez McManus Carnes, 90, of 4991 Pageland Highway died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, with the Revs. Kenneth Coker and Donald Coppedge officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Carnes was the daughter of the late John Washington McManus and Lizzie McManus McManus. She was the widow of John P. Carnes. She was retired from Springs Industries and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Billy Carnes, Ted J. Carnes and Ned R. Carnes, all of Lancaster; her daughter, Hattie Duncan of Lancaster; her brother, Kelly McManus of Lancaster, five sisters, Kattie Hammond, Edna Whitaker, Azalee Ricks, Frankie Couch and Euree Carnes, all of Lancaster; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church, Children's Fund, 1841 North Rocky River Road, Lancaster 29720.

Leroy Ferguson Jr.

YORK - Mr. Leroy Ferguson Jr., 58, of 6 Private St. died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Bratton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne Smith officiating and the Rev. Donald Hawkins assisting. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

A native of Spartanburg, Mr. Ferguson was the son of Leroy Ferguson Sr. and Lucille Crantrell Ferguson. He worked for E.F.P. Steel Co.

Surviving in addition to his father and mother are his brother, Larry Ferguson of York; his sister, Edna F. Ashley of York; and his companion, Lillie Mae Harlow-Reed of York.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home.

Jimmy Lee Freeman II

WAXHAW, N.C.- Mr. Jimmy Lee Freeman II, 17, of 9321 Maggie Robinson Road died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Waxhaw Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Abby officiating. Burial will be at Providence Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Waxhaw, Mr. Freeman was the son of Jimmy Lee Freeman and Rebecca Ann Freeman. He was a junior at Parkwood High School where he sang in the chorus and lettered as a defensive lineman on the varsity football team.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Debra Marin Newcomer and Kathy Ann Freeman, both of Waxhaw; and his grandfather, Dewey Whitmire of Mineral Springs, N.C.

Fort Mill Funeral Home is in charge.

Marylee Guyton

LEXINGTON - Mrs. Marylee "Mickey" Mattox Guyton, 66, formerly of Rock Hill, died Friday, May 26, 2000.

The funeral was Monday at First Baptist Church of Gaston. Burial was at the church cemetery.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Guyton was the daughter of the late Arthur Finley Sr. and Juanita Owen Finley. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gaston, where she was a Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Guyton also was a member of the Carolina Ballet Company and was active in the Town Theater.

Surviving are her husband, Hugh Guyton of Lexington; two daughters, Sandra Maldonado and Lynn Jackson, both of Columbia; two sons, Richard Mattox and Leslie Mattox, both of West Columbia; her stepdaughter, Julia Miller of Lexington; her step-son, Michael Haynes of Lexington; two brothers, Arthur Finley of Lexington and Emmett Finley of Columbia; and 12 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Myrtle Moore

FORT MILL - Mrs. Myrtle Louise Lambert Moore, 74, of 4172 Doby Bridge Road died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at home.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Pineville City Cemetery in Pineville, N.C., with Chaplain Miriam Mick officiating.

A native of Fort Mill, Mrs. Moore was the daughter of the late Jason Mack Lambert and Lucy Ann Jordan Lambert. She was retired from Leesona Corp.

Surviving are her husband, Charles W. Moore; three sons, Larry J. Moore and Ray Moore, both of Satsuma, Fla., and Gene Moore of Shelby, N.C.; her daughter, Ellen Gwyn of Rock Hill; her brother, Earl Lambert of Lockhart; her sister, Carolyn Vance of Rock Hill; six grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wolfe Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Jennings Roofe

ROCK HILL ­ Mr. Jennings Franklin "Buck" Roofe, 74, of 754 S. Stonewall St. died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Greene Funeral Home Downtown-Chapel, with the Rev. David C. Taylor officiating. Burial will be at Adnah UMC Cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mr. Roofe was the son of the late Jennings Bryan Roofe and Lorena Richardson Roofe. He was the widower of Mary L. Roofe. A retired barber and bookkeeper, Mr. Roofe was a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran. He also was a member of Woodhaven Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary R. "Bunny" Matthews and Lynn R. Totherow, both of Rock Hill; his son, J. F. "Skip" Melton; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Greene Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, Mary R. "Bunny" Matthews, 5835 Mt. Gallant Road, Rock Hill.

Leila Nichols

GREAT FALLS - Mrs. Leila Lewis Nichols, 94, of 3184 Scott Road died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Dearborn United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tony Medlin officiating. Burial will be at Bethesda United Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of Columbia, Mrs. Nichols is the daughter of the late Olin Lewis and Viola Turner Lewis. She was the widow of James Heath Nichols. She was a teacher, principal and guidance counselor at Great Falls Elementary School from 1942 to 1970. She also was a member of Mt. Dearborn United Methodist Church. She received a master's degree in education from Winthrop University.

Surviving are three daughters, Jo Anne Nichols of Columbia, Martha N. Lowry of New Bern, N.C. and Patricia N. Dalbec of Hendersonville, N.C.; four brothers, Carl Lewis of Gainesville, Fla., Fred H. Lewis of Arendtsville Pa., Blake E. Lewis of Conway and Jack L. Lewis of Anderson; three sisters, Nannette Marlowe of Loris, Sarah Johnson of Fairfax, Va. and Mary Kate Lewis of Anderson; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Fun-eral Home.

Renita Worthy

CHESTER - Ms. Renita Worthy, 38, died May 26, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church, with Pastor Curtis Washington officiating and the Rev. Columbus Pendergrass and Pastors George Lowry and Keith Taylor assisting. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Chester, Ms. Worthy is the daughter of the late Earl Sanders Sr. and Bernice Worthy. A manager trainee for DMSI of Charlotte, she graduated from Chester High School in 1980 and continued her studies at Winthrop University.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her son, Justin Renard Worthy of the home; five brothers, Leroy Worthy of Lockhart and Hubert Worthy, Terry Worthy, Wayne Worthy and Darryl Worthy, all of Chester; six sisters, Louise Ingram of High Point, N.C., Classie McNeil of Chester, Brenda Worthy of Detroit, Mich., Miranda W. Foster of Union, and Vanessa Rhyne and Lucille Worthy, both of Chester; and several cousins who were reared like brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends at 2:15 p.m. at the home of Bernice Worthy, 2573 West Chester School Road.
