I. Charles Riddle
May 5, 2004

Irving Charles Riddle, 72, of 905 Mt. Bethel Garmany Road, died Wednesday, May 05, 2004.
Mr. Riddle was born on August 8, 1932 in Newberry County, a son of the late Jimmie Lee and Vera Metts Riddle. He was an U. S. Air Force veteran and former owner of Riddle Sheet Metal. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, former vice-chairman of congregational council and a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Amity Masonic Lodge #87.
Mr. Riddle is survived by wife, Nathaline Knight Riddle of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Beth Riddle and Ronnie and Paula Riddle, all of Prosperity; Alan and Melody Riddle of Moncks Corner; two sisters, Sue Brown of Piedmont and Gladys Brooks of Greenwood; four brothers, Claude Riddle, Roy Riddle, and Loy Riddle, all of Newberry, Derrill Riddle of Tuscon, AZ; and six grandchildren, Laurie, Brandon, Tiffany, Christine, Amber, and Maggie Riddle. He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert Riddle, John Riddle and George Riddle.
Funeral services for I. Charles Riddle will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church by the Rev. Ronald Smith. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence, 905 Mt. Bethel Garmany Road, Newberry.
Memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, 2704 Nance Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers will Gary Riddle, Bill Riddle, Keith Brown, Randy Ware, Eddie Trammell, Brandon Riddle, Robin Hazel and Clyde Walters.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Bush River High School Class of 1952.

Leora Hendrix Walker
June 23, 2004

Leora Hendrix Walker went to be with the Lord on June 23, 2004. She was born on August 24, 1925, to Eula and Marcus Hendrix in Newberry.
Leora was one of ten children. In 1943, she left home at 18 years old to become the office manager of the Western Union office in Georgetown. There she assisted in delivering important telegraph messages to President Roosevelt during the war. It was here that she met her future husband, Charles V. Walker from Omaha, NE. Together they produced three during their 53-year marriage. Passionate about her service for the Lord, she taught Sunday school at Calvary Baptist Church in Lake Havasu City, AZ for over 20 years. She retired from teaching upon her diagnosis with cancer in May of 2003.
Leora is predeceased in death by her husband, Charles: sister, Corinne Merritt; and brother, Clarence Dennis, and survived by daughters, Candice Chase and husband Eric, Cheryl Palmer and husband Bill; son Charles F. Walker and wife Mary; grandchildren, Aaron, Brian, Kevin, Nicole, and Jessica; brothers, Harold Hendrix and Boyd Hendrix; and sisters, Mae Wiehrs, Martha Bowers, Lillian Bouknight, Betty Willingham, and Fronie Chaney.
Funeral services for Leora Hendrix Walker were conducted at Calvary Baptist Church on Monday, June 28, 2004. Gravesides funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday,
July 1, 2004 in Trinity United Methodist Church in Newberry.
Memorials may be made in Leora’s name to Calvary Baptist Church, 1605 S. McCulloch Blvd., Lake Havasu City, AZ.

Gracie Ann Kinard
June 19, 2004

Gracie Ann Kinard, 47, of 1116 Sinclair Ave, Whitmire, died June 19, 2004 in a car accident in Columbia.
Miss Kinard was born on February 13, 1957 in Union, a daughter of Maude Louise Caughman Kinard and the late Thomas E. Kinard. She was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Whitmire.
Miss Kinard is survived her mother, Maude Louise Caughman Kinard of the home; sister and brother-in-law, Betty K. and Carol Thomas of Whitmire; a nephew, Michael Paul Thomas of Whitmire.
Funeral services for Gracie Ann Kinard will be conducted at 10:30 A. M. Tuesday at St. Timothy Lutheran Church by the Rev. John Weaver and Rev. James Shealy. Interment will be Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church Cemetery at Prosperity.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P. M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry and another visitation will be held at St. Timothy Lutheran Church from 9:30 to 10:15 A. M. on Tuesday. The family will be at the residence, 1116 Sinclair Ave. Whitmire.

James L. "Jim" Motes
June 17, 2004

James L. “Jim” Motes, 63, of 381 Goodson Street, Allendale, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at his residence.
Mr. Motes was born in Laurens County on October 26, 1940, a son of the late Marshall L. and Mamie Louise Wallenzine Motes. He was an employee of Mabbett Transport Company, Inc. and a member of Little River-Dominick Presbyterian Church in Kinards, SC. He was a member of the Allendale Masonic Lodge # 109 and member of the S. C. National Guard for 9 years.
Mr. Motes is survived by his wife, Betty Grist Motes of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Curtis and Kathy Motes of Hendersonville, NC and Larry Christian and Jana Motes of Summerville; eleven grandchildren.
Graveside services for James L. “Jim” Motes will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Saturday at Little River-Dominick Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Kinards, SC by the Rev. Dr. Lawton Daugherty.

Charles L. Hamby
June 15, 2004

Charles L. Hamby, 73, of 2305 Mayes Avenue, Newberry, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hamby was born on June 13, 1931 in Simpsonville, a son of the late W. A. and Mamie Hill Hamby. He was a member of Glenn Street Baptist Church. He retired from the Kendall Company, Oakland Plant, having worked at the Mollohon Plant also, and was retired from the United States Army. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.
Mr. Hamby is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris Haltiwanger Hamby of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law; Christie and Dale Eargle and Alice and Danny Turner all of Newberry; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Willie Cooper of Marietta, GA, Polly Mills and Eunice Long of Newberry, and Vernice and George Fuller of Greensboro, NC; a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Joy Hamby of Newberry; six grandchildren and spouses, Carol and Roger Marlow, Luther Eargle, Mikel Eargle, Lizzi Eargle, Charley and Skipper Livingston, and Allison and Micheal Stribble all of Newberry; three great-grandchildren, LeAnn Marlow, Marie Marlow, and R. J. “Little Man” Marlow; and four step-grandchildren, Lee Turner, Carl Turner, Paul Turner, and Shawn Folk.. He was predeceased by two brothers, Carl Hamby and Claude Hamby and a sister, Roberta Hamby.
Funeral services for Charles L. Hamby will be conducted at 10:30 AM Friday at Glenn Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Todd Kirkland, Rev. Charles Aurand, and Rev. Jim Hagen. Interment with full military honors will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence, 2305 Mayes Avenue, Newberry.

Elbert J. Dickert, M.D.
June 11, 2004

Elbert Jackson Dickert, Jr., M.D. of 1527 Boundary Street, Newberry, SC, died Friday, June 11, 2004 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Dickert was born on October 1, 1921, in Newberry County, a son of the late Elbert Jackson and Geneva Thornton Dickert. He was educated in the Newberry City Schools and was a graduate of Newberry College. In 1945, he received the Doctor of Medicine degree from Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served his internship at the Columbia Hospital of Richland County in Columbia, South Carolina. Following his internship, he served as a medical officer in the United States Army until his discharge as a Captain in 1948.
In 1948, he returned to Newberry and established a practice of Family Medicine. He was a member of the Newberry County Medical Society, The South Carolina Medical Association, The Southern Medical Association, The American Medical Association, and The American Academy of Family Physicians. He became a Diplomat of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1973 and was inducted as a Fellow of that organization in 1974.
Dr. Dickert served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Newberry County Memorial Hospital, the Neonatal and Maternal Care Committee of the South Carolina Medical Association and the HRCP Committee of the State Health and Human Services Finance Commission.
In 1992, he received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Newberry College, and in 1998, then-governor David Beasley awarded him The Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest honor for civilian service. On November 24, 1998, the Newberry County Memorial Hospital thanked him for 50 years of service as a Family Physician and for the difference he made in the lives of so many Newberry citizens. In 2000, the Exchange Club celebrated his contribution to the community by awarding him the “Golden Book of Deeds.”
In 1944, he married the former Mary Layton of Newberry. They are the parents of two sons and daughters-in-law, Judge Neal Workman Dickert and Floride of Augusta, Georgia, and David Layton Dickert and Barbara of Fenton, Missouri. They are the grandparents of Neal Workman Dickert, Jr. and wife, Rachel of Baltimore, Maryland, and John Elbert Dickert and Mary Catherine Dickert of Fenton, Missouri.
He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he actively served on various committees.
Funeral services for Dr. Elbert J. Dickert, Jr. will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Miller. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends after the interment services in Henry Hall of Central United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Newberry County Memorial Hospital Foundation, PO Box 497, Newberry, SC 29108, Newberry College, 2100 College Street, Newberry, SC 29108, and the Newberry Opera House Foundation, PO Box 357, Newberry, SC 29108
Active pallbearers will be Robert Barber, Allen Bridgers, Richard Carter, John Dickert, Neal Dickert, Frank Jones, Charles Layton, Steven Layton, Dr. Elmer Long, Bruce Reeves, Douglas Roberts and Jim Neal Workman.
