Linda Gardner

COLUMBIA - Mrs. Linda Maxine Gardner, 59, formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Bernadin Hospice House.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Anthony Dick and Don Wooly officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Gardner was the daughter of the late Thomas Watson and Addie Neely Ashley Gardner.

Mrs. Gardner worked for over 27 years at the South Carolina Depart-ment of Revenue. She was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two sons, Tommy Varnadore of McConnells and Mike Jayne of Columbia; her brother, Jerry Gardner of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and other times at Tommy Varnadore's home, 5770 McConnells Highway, McConnells.

Thelma Berryhill

FORT MILL - Mrs. Thelma Lee Wolfe Berryhill, 84, of Stockbridge, Ga., died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Christian Ministries Hospice in Griffin, Ga.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte.

A native of Spartanburg, Mrs. Berryhill was a daughter of the late Roy Monroe Wolfe and Ottie Mae Dillingham Wolfe. She was the widow of Arron Lee Berryhill. She was a homemaker and a was member of Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. She was a former volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Surviving are two sons, Douglas Lee Berryhill of Stockbridge and Robert W. Berryhill Sr. of Oakland, Calif.; five sisters, Ethel Caudle of Overland Park, Kan., Vernal McGhinn of Lumberton, N.C., Flora McClure of Orange, Texas, Cirrie Kendall of New London, N.C., and Peggy Morgan of Sylva, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1615 E. Fifth St., Charlotte, NC 28204 or to the American Lung Association, 5315 Greenbrook Drive, Charlotte, NC 28205.

Margie Brock

CHESTER - Mrs. Margie W. Brock, 78, of 588 Gardendale Circle died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Reggie Parker officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Chester County, Mrs. Brock was a daughter of the late Grover C. Wilkes and Janie Allen Wilkes. She was a retired sales clerk and was a graduate of Chester High School. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Deborah Brock and Barbara Barber, both of Chester; two brothers, Harold Wilkes of Lancaster and Larry Wilkes of Columbia; four sisters, Gobie Beckham, Mary Ruth Morgan, Sara Statham and Peggy Casey, all of Chester; two grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Malcolm Dunlap

ROCK HILL - Mr. Malcolm "Floopy" Boyd Dunlap, 90, of 1019 Myrtle Drive died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Lee Bryant officiating.

A native of York County, Mr. Dunlap was a son of the late Marshal Dunlap and Margaret Ida Pearson Dunlap. He was retired from the Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Co., and he was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge 111 and the Rock Hill Country Club.

Surviving are his wife, Grace Riddle Dunlap; his son, Mac Dunlap of Rock Hill; three daughters, Faye D. Almon of Charlotte and Margaret D. Coggins and Patti D. Simril, both of Rock Hill; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home-Rock Hill Chapel and other times at the home.

Robert Fant

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Mr. Robert McCall Fant, 87, formerly of Rock Hill, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, in Gainesville.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Susan Denne officiating.

A native of Union, Mr. Fant had lived in Hall County, Ga., since 1989. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the Mackey Co. and was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill.

Surviving are his daughter, Janice Boetz of Gainesville; two sisters, Nettie Wade Fant Chase of Madison, Wis., and Josephine Fant Callaway of Batesville, Ark.; and two grandsons.

Memorials may be made to the Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton or a charity of one's choice.

Sam Jones Sr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Sam Jones Sr., 79, of 302 N. Catawba St. died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Eddie Usher officiating.

A native of Darlington, Mr. Jones was a son of the late Ike Jones and Mattie Cross Jones. He was retired from Springs Industries and was affiliated with Victory Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Vera Threatt of Winnsboro and Barbara Taylor of Lancaster; four brothers, Dickie Jones of Florida and K.C. Jones, Guy Jones and Buddy Jones, all of Darlington; his sister, Ada Crawley of Utah; six grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home and other times at the home of Vera Threatt, 721 Dutchman Lane, Winnsboro.

Memorials may be sent to the Diabetes Foundation, 23 E. 26th St., New York, NY 10010.

Frederick Knapp

ROCK HILL - Mr. Frederick "Fred" Milo Knapp, 70, of 1893 Eastview Road died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be private.

A native of Ackley, Pa., Mr. Knapp was a son of Izora Van Arsdale Knapp of Frewsburg, N.Y., and the late Frank Knapp.

He was a retired automobile mechanic and body shop supervisor. He was a retired stock car racer who raced against Lee Petty, Buck Baker and others at Daytona Beach and other tracks in and around New York and Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Living Legends of Auto Racing.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Paula Allen Knapp; his daughter, Robin Bartlett of Lake Odessa, Mich.; his stepson, James Chappalino III of Jamestown, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Peggy Harris of Jamestown and Cynthia Goodwill of Sinclarville, N.Y.; five sons, Steven Knapp and Brian Knapp, both of Jamestown, Rexford Knapp of Kennedy, N.Y., Kenneth Knapp of Niobe, N.Y., Frederick M. Knapp Jr. of Camden, N.Y., his brother, Phillip Knapp of Frewsburg, N.Y.; two sisters, Cynthia Knapp of Frewsburg and Bonnie Bush of Jamestown; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Rachel Ballard

CLOVER - Mrs. Rachel Clemmer Ballard, 71, of 309 C Willow Oak Circle died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Beverly Health Care in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Bowling Green First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harry Bryant officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of Gaston County, N.C., Mrs. Ballard was the daughter of the late John Martin Clemmer and Esther Kiser Clemmer. She was the widow of William F. Ballard. She was retired from Klear Knit and was a longtime member of Bowling Green First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Esther Hullett of Six Mile and Connie Ballard of Clover; her stepson, Frank Ballard Jr. of Gastonia, N.C.; her stepdaughter, Mary Lee Reynolds of Denver, N.C.; her brother, James Clemmer of Bowling Green; her sister, Bertie Parker of Bowling Green; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Beatrice Black

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Beatrice Turner Black, 85, of 3491 McConnells Highway died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Parrish officiating. Burial will be at Catawba Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Del Rio, Tenn., Mrs. Black was the daughter of the late Joseph Millard Turner and Mary Raines Turner. She was the widow of Frank Harmon Black. Mrs. Black ran a daycare center for children for many years from her home and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are three sons, Frank Harmon Black Jr. and William Ronnie Black, both of Rock Hill, and Robert Davidson Black of Hendersonville, N.C.; three daughters, Patricia B. Robinson and Bonnie B. Collins, both of Rock Hill, and Sandra C. Roberts of Phoenix.; two brothers, "Junior" Turner and Jerry Turner; three sisters, Lois Young, Marie Lewis and Betty Rice, all of the Asheville area of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and at other times at the home, 3491 McConnells Highway, Rock Hill.

Raeford Aiton

ROCK HILL - Mr. Raeford Y. Aiton, 67, of 712 W. White St. died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Aiton was the son of the late John H. Aiton and Jessie Lee Shurfield Aiton. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his brother, Oscar L. Aiton of Rock Hill; and his sister, Violet Roberts of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and other times at the home of Oscar Aiton, 3 Barrow St., Rock Hill.

Nellie Stanley

FORT MILL - Mrs. Nellie Alley Stanley, 73, of 8883 Shelley Mullis Road died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be noon Wednesday at Belair United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve McCormick officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Methodist Cemetery in Cornelius, N.C.

A native of Iredell County, N.C., Mrs. Stanley was the daughter of the late Robert Alley and Clemmie Sweet Alley. She was the widow of Willie Stanley. She was a homemaker and was a member of Belair United Methodist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Gary Alexander Hager of Concord, N.C., Tony D. Hunt of Fort Mill and Edward D. Hager of Pawleys Island; her daughter, Johnnie Belinda Hager of Fort Mill; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Hunt, 9408 Man-O-War Road, Fort Mill, SC 29715.

Myrtle Ussery

GEORGETOWN - Mrs. Myrtle Brooks Ussery, 92, formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be private. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Rock Hill.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Ussery was retired from Rock Hill Printing Finishing Co. She was a lifelong member of the Rock Hill Woman's Club. She was also a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Ellen Ussery Knott of Charlotte; her son, Albert Max Ussery Jr. of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the church after the memorial service.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Senior Adult Ministry, 215 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

John Varnadore Jr.

RIDGEWAY - Mr. John Olen Varnadore Jr., 72, formerly of Great Falls, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Tanglewood Health Care Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Charles Bradley officiating.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Varnadore was the son of the late John Olen Varnadore Sr. and Inez Bell Varnadore.

He was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. He was a World War II Army veteran and also served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He attended Great Falls schools.

Surviving are six sisters, Margie Varnadore of Winnsboro, Edith McGarity of Blackstock, Jessie Carter of Lancaster and Beulah Wright, Linda Roberts and Brenda Price, all of Great Falls.

William Davis

CLOVER - Mr. William Joseph Davis, 74, of 150 Beaver Springs Lane died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Beverly Health Care in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be 7 tonight at M. L. Ford Sons Funeral Home.

A native of Ashe County, N.C., Mr. Williams was the son of the late Unis Davis and Callie Cox Davis. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Ann Kennedy Davis; two sons, William J. Davis Jr. of Gastonia, N.C., and John E. Davis of Clover; two daughters, Sue E. Merrill of Denver and Shirley Ann Wiles of Arthurdale, W. Va.; two brothers, Norman Davis and Willey Davis, both of California; her sister, Pauline Robinson of California; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at M. L. Ford Sons Funeral Home.
