Myrtis Laney

LANCASTER - Mrs. Myrtis Ruth Blackwell Laney, 83, of 707 Woodland Drive died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

A graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Roy Barnes officiating.

A native of Jefferson, Mrs. Laney was the daughter of the late Beauford and Faye McNeeley Blackwell. She was the widow of Wilburn F. Moseley Sr. and Troy Laney.

She was a bookkeeper at Springs Industries and a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Wilburn F. Moseley Jr. of Lancaster and Tom Moseley of Santa Monica, Calif.; her daughter, Sylvia Tirpak of Charleston; two brothers, Nay Blackwell and Clyde Blackwell, both of Lancaster; five sisters, Bennie Blume of Charlotte, Kerried Miller of Rochester, N.H., and Ottie B. Stogner, Edith Threatt and Bronna Ackerman, all of Lancaster; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 300 South Market St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Annie Patterson

HEATH SPRINGS - Mrs. Annie Margaret Patterson died Tuesday, June 6, 2000.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Calvary AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Robert L. Davis officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mrs. Patterson was a daughter of the late Frazier Hammond and Lillie Mae Hammond. She was a retired cafeteria worker at Hillside School, where she worked for 35 years.

Surviving are her husband, Straywell Patterson Sr.; three sons, Ulrich D. Patterson of Hyattsville, Md., Straywell Patterson Jr. of Columbia and Howard Hammond of Lancaster; five daughters, Gretchen U. Patterson of Heath Springs, Germaine Smith of Charlotte, Felice Cargill of Marina Del Rey, Calif., Patricia Shaw of Silver Spring, Md., and Mary Ann Miller of Rochester Hills, Mich.; her sister, Betty Barnes of Charlotte; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at McCray Funeral Home.

Katherine Patterson

FORT MILL - Mrs. Katherine Wood Patterson, 74, of 605 Link St., Apt. 2B, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Independent Bible Baptist Church in Pineville, N.C., with the Rev. Arnold McCarver officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Calhoun Falls, Mrs. Patterson was a daughter of the late William Glenn Wood and Allie N. Aiton Wood. She was the widow of Henry E. Patterson.

A homemaker, she was a member of Independent Bible Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Richard R. Wood of Rock Hill, Ronnie Wood of McConnells and Randy Reese of Greenwood; two daughters, Brenda McIntosh of Greenwood and Kathy McCulley of Fort Mill; her sister, Gloria Carmen Cobb of Greenville; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Independent Bible Baptist Church.

Golda Perry

LANCASTER - Mrs. Golda Gillis Perry, 80, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Lancaster Convalescent Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Eugene Rollins officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Sumter County, Mrs. Perry was a daughter of the late James Edward Gillis and Sallie Hurst Gillis. She was the widow of Roddey Perry.

She was retired from Springs Industries and a member of Second Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, Thurman Gillis of Lancaster and her granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Hartley Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her granddaughter, Lisa Robinson, 2674 Norfolk Road, Lancaster.

James Plyler

GREAT FALLS - Mr. James Ferrell Plyler, 69, of 33 Church St. died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Greenlawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Charles Bradley officiating.

A native of Union, Mr. Plyler was the son of the late Sam Plyler and Mae Sharon Plyler. He retired from Springs Industries and attended schools in Union County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his wife, Annie W. Plyler; two sons, Danny Plyler of Kershaw and Kenneth Plyler of Great Falls; four stepsons, Danny Pate of York, Edward Pate of Texas, Stevie Stevenson of Georgia, and Robert "Bubba" Stevenson of Bennettsville; one stepdaughter, Libby McDaniel of Rock Hill; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

William Powell

WATERLOO - Mr. William Ansel Powell, 83, of 119 Broadway Lane died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Kennedy Mortuary in Laurens. Burial with military honors will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

A native of Georgia, Mr. Powell was a son of the late William Powell and Ola Powell. He was a retired master sergeant with the U.S. Army after 28 years of service. He was also a retired maintenance supervisor with Louisville/Jefferson Airport. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Sally Cannon Sullivan Powell; his daughter, Shirley M. Reitemyer or Waterloo; five stepsons, Tommy Sullivan, Benny Sullivan, Jimmy Sullivan, and Larry Sullivan, all of Rock Hill, and Robert Sullivan of Belchase, La.; one stepdaughter, Martha S. Ballew of Rock Hill; his sister, Annie Mae Hammond of Ashburn, Ga.; his half-sister, Fannie McAllister of Rock Hill; three grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Kennedy Mortuary and at other times at the home.

Arlevia Ross

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Arlevia Miller Ross, 88, 1146 Hoyle St., died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Boyd Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. James T. Barber, assisted by the Revs. Hazel Hill, Michelle Durham, Klarren Baxter and James Thompson.

Mrs. Ross attended York County schools and was mother of the church, mother of usher ministries, a member of the mass choir, missionary society and Boyd Hill burial aid society.

Surviving are her son, Melvin Ross Jr. of Rock Hill; her daughters, Nattie R. Parker and Patty R. Grant, both of Rock Hill; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Boyd Hill Baptist Church and other times at the home.

Karen Dark

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Karen Haynes Dark, 47, of 909 Normandy Way died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Covenant Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Matthew Horne officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens after a graveside Eastern Star ceremony.

A native of Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Dark was a daughter of Marcilyn B. Haynes of Dallas, N.C., and the late Jack D. Haynes.

Mrs. Dark worked for Eastern Airlines for 17 years and was the founding president of Dark III Marketing in Rock Hill. She was active in founding the Go-Go's, the senior citizens group at Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Aaron Burt Dark III; her stepson, Aaron B. Dark IV of Boone, N.C.; and two brothers, Karl Haynes of Charlotte and Jack D. Haynes Jr. of Belmont, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Edward Black

YORK - The chairman of the Regional Council of Chambers, well-known businessman and community leader Eddie Black died at his home Saturday.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Rose Hill Cemetery in York, with the Rev. Donald A. Lowery officiating.

During his tenure as the chambers' chairman, Black, 54, pushed for the Rock Hill, Fort Mill and Tega Cay chambers of commerce to merge as the York County Regional Chamber of Commerce in an effort to streamline their services to businesses in the eastern part of the county.

"He was a member of several chambers and was very instrumental in bringing in cohesiveness to all the chambers," said Paula Griener, director of the York Chamber of Commerce. "He was well-liked by everyone. He was very community-minded here in York and throughout the county."

Griener and other area business leaders describe Black as a gentleman, who was down to earth, dedicated and a quiet leader.

"Eddie had sight ... insight ... about where the county should go in the future. He wanted to see all of York County work together to achieve goals that we can't do as individual communities," said Tom Thomasson, corporate manager of the Fort Mill Telephone Company. "He will be missed. His leadership was very quiet and purposeful. He had goals in mind and would strive for them."

At the time of his death, Black also was the director for the Bank of York and had served as the past chairman of the York County Economic Development Board, the York County Zoning board of Appeals and the Rock Hill Area Chamber of Commerce.

Born in York, Black was a son of Polly Black Rodgers and the late E.C. Black. He attended area schools and received an agricultural degree from North Carolina State University.

He was president of Farmer Mutual Insurance Co. and was a member of the York County Cattleman's Association. The owner and president of Black Enterprises, Inc., Black founded his family-owned business in 1986, selling agricultural and landscaping equipment from Massey-Ferguson, Kubota, Hesston, Daewoo, Hudson Brother and Foster and others.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Diane Myers Black; his son, Robert Clark Black of York; his daughter, Jane Stockton Black of York; and two brothers, Arthur Quinn Black and John Robert Black, both of York.

The family will receive friends at home. Memorials may be sent to the Church of Good Shepherd, P.O. Box 437, York, SC 29745.

Miller Thomas

ROCK HILL - Mr. Miller Jones Thomas, 77, of 1011 McDow Drive died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at home.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church cemetery in York, with the Rev. Lewis Bozard officiating.

A native of Sharon, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Theron Thomas and Bessie Ashe Thomas.

Mr. Thomas was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He worked at Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. for 18 years in the drying department and the industrial mill until it closed.

Surviving are his wife, Lynda Harper Thomas; two sons, Zack Thomas of Rock Hill and Stacey Thomas of Clover; two daughters, Daphne Easterling of Conway and Sharon Boatwright of Fort Mill; three brothers, Leroy Thomas of Rock Hill, Marshal Thomas of York and Raymond Thomas of Charlotte; and five sisters, Ruby Blackwelder of Rock Hill, Lucille White of Blacksburg, Margaret Boltman of Chester, Irma Rockholt of Fairfax, Va., and Lillian Hullett of York.

The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel and at other times at the home.

Carl Doby

SPENCER, N.C. - Mr. Carl "Roy" L. Doby, 64, of Spencer died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at Summersett Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Roberts officiating. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park with military honors.

A native of Stanley County, N.C., Mr. Doby was a son of the late Claude Albert Doby and Carrie Austin Doby.

He attended Salisbury, N.C., city schools and graduated from Salisbury Business College with a degree in business administration. He worked for the VA hospital in Salisbury and was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church, the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion, the Hudson Miller Tatum VFW Post 3006 and was a past officer at Spencer Moose Lodge No. 543.

Surviving are his son, Austin Doby of Salisbury; two daughters, Teresa Ward of Fort Mill and Cheryl VanderPoel of Salisbury; three sisters, Helen Poole of High Point, N.C., Betty Plummer of Churchland, N.C., and Judy Bolich of Pennsylvania; and three grandchildren.

Cletus Knight

LANCASTER - Mr. Cletus Britton Knight, 83, of 1572 Converse St. died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Mercy South Hospital in Pineville, N.C.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Gilbert Rowell officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Knight was a son of the late James Hunter Knight and Blanche Starnes Knight. He was retired from Springs Industries as a section man in the spinning department and was a member of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline Gay Knight; his son, Cletus Wayne Knight of Lancaster; three daughters, Sandra Knight Snipes, Sylvia Knight Catoe and Beverly Knox, all of Lancaster; his brother, J.B. Knight of Lancaster; his sister, Doris Starnes of Lancaster; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.
