Elizabeth Rogers

FORT MILL - Mrs. Elizabeth L. Rogers, 92, died Sunday, June 18, 2000.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Fort Mill. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Rogers was a daughter of the late Gilbert Lazenby and Nancy Edwards Lazenby. She was a 1928 graduate of Columbia College, where she served as president of the Wightman-Wilson Literary Society, as president of the Pan-Hellenic Council, as president of the junior class and as vice-president of the student body during her senior year. She was a retired school teacher, a member of the Kanawah Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a life master duplicate bridge player and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she served on the altar guild.

Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth Justice of Fort Mill; and her grandson.

The family will receive friends before the service at 11:30 a.m. in the undercroft of the church.

Alice Bailey

FORT MILL - Mrs. Alice Varnadore Bailey, 67, of 204 Williamson St. died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Fort Mill Church of God, with the Rev. David Kemp officiating. Burial will be at Westside Cemetery in Lancaster.

A native of Charlotte, Mrs. Bailey was the daughter of the late James Jesse Varnadore and Bessie Viola West Varnadore. She was the widow of Alvin Bailey.

Mrs. Bailey was retired from Springs Industries as a weaver and was a member of Fort Mill Church of God. She was active in the church choir and was a Sunday school teacher. She also worked at the Senior Nutrition Center at Unity Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her son, Perry Bailey of Fort Mill; her brother, Jack Varnadore of Fort Mill; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Fort Mill Church of God and other times at home, 204 Williamson St., Fort Mill, SC 29715.

Memorials may be made to Fort Mill Church of God, Music Fund, P.O. Box 94, Fort Mill, SC 29716.

Boyd Dean Sr.

LANCASTER ­ Mr. Boyd Thomas "Shorty" Dean Sr., 62, of 1446 Kelly Drive died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Hammond officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Westside Cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Dean was the son of the late Boyd Clinton Dean and Mae Elizabeth Huffstickler Dean. He was the widower of Ella Mae Broughton Dean. He was an Army veteran and was a licensed minister at Little Lamb Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Claude Dean and Boyd Thomas Dean Jr., both of Rock Hill; his daughter, Phyllis Kirby of Pineville, N.C.; five brothers, William Dean and David Dean, both of Gastonia, N.C., Danny Dean of Dallas, N.C., Max Dean of Mt. Holly, N.C., and Dale Dean of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, and other times at the home of Phyllis Kirby, 12414 Buxton Drive, Pineville, NC.

Melissa Fisher

CHARLOTTE - Ms. Melissa "Lisa" Frances Fisher, 26, of 14049 Queen's Harbor Road, formerly of Rock Hill, died Sunday, May 21, 2000 at home.

A memorial service will be 6 p.m. Friday at Forest Hills Cemetery in Rock Hill.

A native of Rock Hill, Ms. Fisher was the daughter of Don Fisher and Elizabeth Fisher of Lancaster. She worked for Griffie's Gym and was a personal trainer. A member of Shekinah Church in Rock Hill, Ms. Fisher attended Rock Hill High School.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her brother, Matthew E. Fisher of Augusta, Ga; and two sisters, Jaclyn Fisher of Lancaster and Beth Fisher of Rockingham, N.C.

Valery Garrison

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. ­ Mrs. Valery Sadler Garrison, 51, of 104 Cameron Drive died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Billy D. Houze officiating. Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park.

A native of Gaston County, Mrs. Garrison was the daughter of John Kimble Sadler and Ruth Kimble Sadler of Gastonia. She was the First Lady of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church in Rock Hill, where she served as director of the youth, Sunday school teacher of the adult class and sang in the mass choir.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, the Rev. Dr. Willie Garrison; her son, Donavan Garrison of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Shonda Hall of Lexington, Ky. and Monique Hill of Omaha, Neb.; five brothers, Kenneth Sadler of Atlanta., Cecil Sadler of Belmont, N.C., Castadale Sadler and Michael Sadler, both of Gastonia, Mark Sadler of Kernersville, N.C.; three sisters, Shirley Dye and Elouise Pettus, both of New York, and Janice Feaster of Gastonia; two adopted sisters, Angela Ashley and Donna Riddle, both of Gastonia; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. today at the church.

James Jackson

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mr. James Marcellus Jackson of 1415 Pinehurst St. died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church in York, with the Rev. Keith Hunter officiating. Burial will be at St. James United Methodist Church cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Jackson was the son of the late James "Dewey" Jackson and Ida Caldwell Jackson. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church of York and served as past trustee, at-large member of the Administrative Council, member of the senior choir and the United Methodist Church. He was a Korean War Army veteran. He was Past Worshipful Master of Wilson Lodge No. 303 F. & A.M. and was Associate Patron of Wilson Chapter No. 207 Order of the Eastern Star. He attended Highland High School and was a 1950 graduate of Jefferson High School in York. He was a graduate of Friendship Jr. College in Rock Hill.

Surviving are his wife, Nellie McGill Jackson; her daughter, Beverly Sanders of Gastonia; her sister, Lunelee Withers of Charlotte; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Costner Funeral Home.

Ernestine Knight

GREAT FALLS - Mrs. Ernestine Sweatt Knight, 64, of 274 Wildwood Road died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Evangel Temple Assembly of God, with the Revs. Mike Sollers and C.O. Belk Jr. officiating. The burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.

A native of Great Falls, Mrs. Knight was a daughter of the late Ernest T. Sweatt and Evelyn McElduff Sweatt. She was a member of the Evangel Temple Assembly of God and was retired from Duracell in Lancaster. A graduate of the Great Falls High School, she was the widow of Grover L. Knight.

Surviving are her son, Tommy Knight of Great Falls; three daughters, Kimberly Knight and Debra Croxton, both of Great Falls and Glenda Sistare of Lancaster; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Gerald McIlwain

LANCASTER - Mr. Gerald T. McIlwain, 25, died Monday, June 19, 2000.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at White Oak AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Harold Jones officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. McIlwain was the son of Floyd McIlwain Jr. and Claudia Hayden McIlwain. He worked for News Group in Fort Mill and attended South Carolina State University in and Orangeburg.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his son, JaQwan McCorey of Charlotte; two sisters, Sequesta M. Hood of Rock Hill and Natasha M. Smith of Charlotte.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at McMullen Funeral Home.

Marjorie Meacham

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Marjorie Whisonant Meacham, 78, of 529 Arch Drive died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Eddie Ramsey officiating.

A native of York County, Mrs. Meacham was a daughter of the late Clarence P. Whisonant and Winnie Lowery Whisonant. She was a member of the Park Baptist Church, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Frank Roach Post No. 34 and Veterans of Foreign War Ladies Auxiliary. She was a retired cashier at A&P with more than 20 years service.

Surviving are her brother, Clarence P. Whisonant Jr. of Mobile, Ala.; her sister, Sue W. Nelson of Rock Hill; three nephews whom she raised, David Giles, Jeff Giles and Joe Giles, all of Rock Hill; her great niece; and her great nephew.

Ray Reeves

CHESTER - Mr. Ray Crawford Reeves, 69, of 920 Shallowbrook Drive died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Barron Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. James Sanders and Mark Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

A native of Kershaw County, Mr. Reeves was the son of the late Chalmers Odell Reeves and Lucille Haire Reeves. He was retired from Springs Industries and attended Chester County schools.

Surviving are his wife, Edith Kinsey Reeves; two sons, Richard W. Reeves and Raymond F. Reeves, both of Chester; his daughter, Cynthia Stone of Chester; his brother, Clyde W. Reeves of Lexington, Ky.; his sister, Mary R. Hatchell of Chester; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home, 920 Shallowbrook Drive, Chester.

Carl Rodgers

WAXHAW, N.C. - Mr. Carl Edwin Rodgers, 88, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Monroe Manor Rest & Retirement Home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Mineral Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Yow officiating. Burial will be at Lakeland Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Rodgers was the son of the late William John Rodgers and Eudosia Jane Perry Rodgers. He was a retired farmer and was a member of Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are his wife, Bessie Robinson Rodgers; two sons, Carl Edwin "Eddie" Rodgers of Mineral Springs, N.C., and David Lane Rodgers of Laurinburg, N.C.; his daughter, Pattie Lee Rodgers of Waxhaw; two sisters, Bessie Pettus of Indian Land and Alta Howie of Fort Mill; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the Christian Life Center of the church.

SALISBURY, N.C. - Mr. Lester Smith Sr., 87, of 1201 Davis St. died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Brian Center of Salisbury.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at West Park Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Carver officiating. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury.

A native of Cabarrus County, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Jake Washington Smith and Sarah Ann Swisher Smith. He worked for Johnson Mills as a card hand. He attended West Park Baptist Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Rosa Ann Pressley of Lake Wiley; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord.

Mary Springs

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Alma Springs, 68, of 1219 Watson St. died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Boyd Hill Baptist church, with the Rev. Thomas Barber officiating, and the Revs. Caldwell Culp and Michelle Dunham assisting. The Rev. B.R. Wilson will give the eulogy.

A native of York County, Mrs. Springs was the daughter of Harry Stevenson Springs and Connie Springs. She worked for Winthrop College in Rock Hill. She attended Boyd Hill Baptist Church and York County schools.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Boyd Hill and also from 9 to noon Friday at Parker Funeral Home.

Melvin Steele

LANCASTER - Mr. Melvin Lee Steele, 38, of 837 Culdesac Road died Tuesday, June 20, 2000.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Steele was the son of Clyde Steele and Shirley Gales Guyton. He was office manager of McDonald's Amusements, was a Shriner with the Hejaz Temple, was a member of Hart Masonic Lodge No. 380 and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Rita Green Steele; his stepson, Kris Robinson of Lancaster; two brothers, Marvin Steele of Lancaster and Tripp Pate of York; three sisters, Karen Burbach of Rock Hill, and Cindi McDonald and Ginger Meeks, both of Myrtle Beach; and his stepmother, Grace Steele of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster. The family will be at the home of his brother, Marvin Steele, 1668 Hillcrest Ave., Lancaster, SC 29720.
