Charles Bowers

LANCASTER - Mr. Charles Maxie Bowers, 57, of 1171 Faile St. died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at High Point Free Will Baptist Church, with the Revs. Dr. Stewart Snow and N.J. Neely officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park with fire department rites.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Bowers was a son of Sarah Lessie Hunter Bowers and the late Samuel Claude Bowers. He was retired from the city of Lancaster as fire chief and was a technician at Lancaster Cable TV. He was a member of Taylors Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Dianne K. Bowers; his daughter, Shari Sims of Lancaster; two brothers, Thomas C. Bowers and Teddy M. Bowers, both of Lancaster; three sisters, Sue Edge of Rockwell, N.C., and Patricia B. Pardue and Judy Knight, both of Lancaster; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Cauthen Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Mildred Davidson

CLOVER - Mrs. Mildred Davidson, 90, of 98 Clinton Ave. died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodside Cemetery, with the Rev. Al Daniel officiating.

A native of York County, Mrs. Davidson was a daughter of the late Willie Meek McCarter and Emma Melton McCarter. She was the widow of Ottman Davidson. She was a member of Ramah Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her son, Texas Henderson of Stone Mountain, Ga.; three sisters, Mary Grissom, Gladys Nunn and Ruby Bennett, all of Clover; four brothers, Glenn McCarter, Marvin McCarter and Dean McCarter, all of Clover, and States McCarter of Athens, Ga.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Hazel Eidson

STATESVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Hazel Wilson Eidson, 87, of 547 Turnersburg Highway died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Davis Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Rose Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Revs. H. Cowles Bristol and Herman Nicholson officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

A native of Greensboro, N.C., Mrs. Eidson was a daughter of the late David Wilson and Molly King Wilson. She was a homemaker and a member of Rose Chapel United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, where she was active in the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are her husband, I. Clarence Eidson of the home; two sons, David E. Eidson of Conover, N.C., and Donald C. Eidson of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Peggy Eidson Gardner of Rock Hill and Lorraine Eidson White of Gahanna, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

The body will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Blanche Gist

YORK - Mrs. Blanche Barnett Gist, 77, of The Willows at York, 42 Ross Cannon St., died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Langrum Branch Baptist Church, with Dr. Osbey Roddey officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York, Mrs. Gist was a daughter of the late Robert Barnette and Sadie Lowry Barnette. She was a member of Langrum Branch Baptist Church, where she was a member of the usher board and the missionary society.

Surviving are four sisters, Leatha Sherer, Roberta Burris and Della Robinson, all of York, and Sadie B. Barnette of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Von Barnette, 601 Fine Wright Ave., York.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Bobby Goodman

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Mr. Bobby L. Goodman, 64, of 415 Love Lane died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Anson Community Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Rockingham, with the Revs. Robert Flynn and Leonard Mayo officiating. Burial will be at Eastside Cemetery.

A native of Richmond County, N.C., Mr. Goodman was a son of the late John Lawrence Goodman and Maggie Wallace Goodman. He was a prominent figure in Rockingham city government and was a member of the City Council. He was a Mason and a Shriner, serving as president of the Pee Dee Shrine Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and president of the Outreach Sunday school class.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Shepard Goodman; two daughters, Jeanie G. Orr and Jill G. Jenkins, both of Rock Hill; six brothers, Raymond Goodman, Jerry Goodman and Bill Goodman, all of Rockingham, Eli Goodman of North Myrtle Beach, Bruce Goodman of Wadesboro, N.C., and Malcolm Goodman of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Doris G. Simmons of Lillington, N.C., and Audrey G. Carter of Graham, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church.

John Jennings Jr.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. John A. Jennings Jr., 52, of 14843 Canefield Drive died Wednesday, June 21, 2000.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Boyd Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Jennings was a son of the late John Adams Jennings Sr. and Richelene Sandifier Jennings. He graduated from Emmett Scott High School with honors and continued his studies at the University of South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army. A member of Boyd Hill Baptist Church, Mr. Jennings later served at Bethel Church in Columbia. At the time of his death, he was under the watch care of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Charlotte.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Jennings of Columbia; his son, Carl Guinyard of Columbia; his daughter, Bernell Outen of Columbia; four brothers, Glen P. Jennings, Wayne E. Jennings, Jackie E. Jennings, all of Rock Hill, and George E. Daniels of Charlotte; five sisters, Mary J. Reaves of Columbia, Barbara J. Watts and Joyce M. Jennings, both of Charlotte, Rosalind M. Jennings of Troy, Ala., and Gwendolyn P. Jennings of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Boyd Hill Baptist Church.

Marjorie Meacham

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Marjorie Whisonant Meacham, 78, of 529 Arch Drive died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Eddie Ramsey officiating.

A native of York County, Mrs. Meacham was a daughter of the late Clarence P. Whisonant and Winnie Lowery Whisonant. She was a member of Park Baptist Church, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Frank Roach Post No. 34 and Veterans of Foreign War Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of LeFeems. She was retired as a cashier at A&P after more than 20 years service.

Surviving are her brother, Clarence P. Whisonant Jr. of Mobile, Ala.; her sister, Sue W. Nelson of Rock Hill; three nephews, David Giles, Jeff Giles and Joe Giles, all of Rock Hill; and two great-nieces.

John Miller

LANCASTER - Mr. John Edward Miller, 44, of 1435 Tripp Lane, formerly of Richburg, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Duke Medical University in Durham, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Richburg, with the Rev. Benjamin Murdock officiating and the Rev. Gary Smith assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester County, Mr. Miller was a son of Ollie M. Barber Miller of Richburg and the late James E. Miller Sr. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and attended the Anointed Word Church in Lancaster. A former employee of Duke Power, he was a 1974 graduate of Lewisville High School and 1976 graduate of York Technical College in Rock Hill.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his son, Darian Miller of Edgemoor; two brothers, James E. Miller Jr. of Charlotte and Larry Miller of Columbia; five sisters, Lizzie Wilmore of Charlotte, Virginia Miller of Chester and Betty Stradford, Martha Douglas and Lorene Fourney, all of Richburg; and his fiancée, Minnie M. McClinton-Miller of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends at the home of Darian Miller, 3716 Dion Drive, Edgemoor and Ollie M. Miller, 145 Church Drive, Richburg.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at King's Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester.

The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sibyl Pearce

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Mrs. Sibyl Comer Pearce, 98, formerly of Raleigh, N.C., died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at High Point Presbyterian Home.

A graveside service was Monday at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Rock Hill.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Pearce was a daughter of the late Edward W. Comer and Ella Bates Comer. She was the widow of W. Davis Pearce. She worked as a newspaper reporter in Rock Hill and Charlotte. She was an active member of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church. She served on the board of Peace College. Mrs. Pearce was one of the first Presbyterian woman elected to traditional male positions, being both a deacon and an elder. She was a leader at High Point Presbyterian Home and First Presbyterian Church at High Point.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Brown-Wynne Funeral Home was in charge.

Margarite Settle

NEW BERN, N.C. - Mrs. Margarite Owen Settle, 91, of 5110 Trentwoods Drive died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia, Ohio.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Cemetery in York, with the Rev. Robert Sprinkle officiating.

A native of Gastonia, N.C., Mrs. Settle was a daughter of the late Melvin Clarence Dexter Owen and Marie Susan Hall. She was the widow of Roger E. Settle Sr. She was a research analyst for the Department of Agriculture and a member of Temple Presbyterian Church in York.

Surviving are her son, Roger Settle of Beavercreek, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at 1000 Owens Road in York.

Memorials may be made to Temple Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 733, York, SC 29745.

Mary Springs

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Alma Edna Springs, 68, of 1219 Watson St. died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Boyd Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Thomas Barber officiating and the Revs. Caldwell Culp and Michelle Dunham assisting. The Rev. B.R. Wilson will give the eulogy.

A native of York County, Mrs. Springs was a daughter of the late Harry Stevenson Springs and Connie Springs. She worked for Winthrop College in Rock Hill. She attended Boyd Hill Baptist Church and York County schools.

Surviving are four sons, Kenneth E. Springs, Samuel L. Springs, Lindsey J. Springs and Johnny J. Springs, all of Rock Hill; six daughters, Linda K. Springs, Mary S. Jones, Phyllis S. Jennings, Brenda Y. Springs, Vivian S. Cherry and LaChan D. Springs, all of Rock Hill; and her sister, Robbie M. Hinton of Rock Hill.

The body may be viewed from 9 to noon today at Parker Funeral Home.

Ryan Henkel

GASTONIA, N.C. - Ryan Craig Henkel, 11, of 4636 Lenden Hall Court died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Greene Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Millwood officiating. Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park.

A native of Mecklenburg County, N.C., Ryan was the son of Andrew Hines Henkel and Karen Hurley Henkel.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his brother, Tyler Andrew Henkel of the home; his maternal grandparents, J.E. Hurley and Louise Hurley of Mount Holly, N.C.; and paternal grandparents, Bob Henkel and Edna Henkel of Clover.

Donald Jones

LANCASTER - Mr. Donald Robert Jones, 60, of 1340 Shiloh Ranch Road died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Monday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Chappell officiating.

A native of Galveston, Texas, Mr. Jones was a son of H. Roswell Jones and Geraldine Bruner Jones of Lancaster. He was the owner and operator of Lan-scape and attended Harvest Time Church of God. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Jo Rinard Jones; two sons, Donald Roswell Jones of California and William "Billy" Joseph Jones of Lancaster; his daughter, Tonya Lorraine Jones of Arizona, his stepson, Donald Thomas "Tommy" West Jr. of the home; two brothers, W. Roswell Jones of Pittsburgh and Thomas C. Jones of Cleveland; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday at Hartley Funeral Home.
