ROCK HILL - Mr. Clarence Dewese Jr., 69, of 339 Blanche Circle died Thursday, July 27, 2000, at 1425 Todd St.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nazareth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John T. McCoy officiating. Burial will be at Nazareth Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Dewese worked for the city of Rock Hill. He attended York County schools.

Surviving are his wife, Inez Dewese of New York City; three sons, Clarence Dewese, Willie Dewese and Jackie Dewese, all of New York City; his daughter, Judy Dewese of New York City; his sister, Mattie Dewese Odom of Rock Hill; and his special friend, Susie Rosbough of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 tonight at Parker Funeral Home and other times at home.

Phyllis Hairston-McPherson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Phyllis Jacquelin Hairston-McPherson of 4368 Redan Road in Stone Mountain, Ga., died Friday, July 28, 2000.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. L. L. Hancock officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of High Point, N.C., Mrs. Hairston-McPherson was a daughter of the late Thomas Hilery Hairston and Julia Mae Blake. She was an Army veteran. She was a member of White Hall Baptist Church in Stone Mountain. She attended Essex County College of Newark, N.J., and DeKalb College in Clarkston, Ga. She attended Germantown High School in Germantown, Pa.

Surviving are her daughter, Barbara A. C. Hairston of Hayward, Calif.; her stepson, Demetrius Cherry of Rock Hill; three brothers, Reginald B. Hairston of Scottsdale, Ga., Gerome J. Hairston of Long Beach, Calif., and Thomas H. Hairston Jr. of Montclair, N.J.; her sister, Carol B. Hairston of Montclair, N.J.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The family will receive friends at 837 Jefferson St.

Ada McDaniel

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Ada Belle Currin McDaniel, 64, of 1317 Centennial Drive died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Jesse Sims officiating. Burial will be 4 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain, N.C.

A native of Henderson, N.C., Mrs. McDaniel was a daughter of the late Jesse Currin and Clara Hayes Currin. She was a member of Grace Church of Nazarene and graduated from Presbyterian School of Nursing. She worked for Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C., and she retired as a LPN at Rock Hill Urology Clinic.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Lamar McDaniel; two sons, Michael Lamar McDaniel of Augusta, Ga., and Steven Keith McDaniel of Rock Hill; two daughters, Chris M. Huntley and Susan Lynn Bolin, both of Rock Hill; her sister, Zona Tant of Louisburg, N.C.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her life-long friend, Polly Picklesimer of Sneads Ferry, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and other times at home.

Memorials may be made to Grace Church of the Nazarene, 1029 Mt. Gallant Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Johnie Roberts

LANCASTER - Mr. Johnie William Roberts, 86, of 1876 J.W. Roberts Road died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Wren officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Kershaw County, Mr. Roberts was a son of the late John Ranford Roberts and Alice Holden Roberts. He retired from Springs Industries, Lancaster Plant, and was a Mason with the Antioch Masonic Lodge No. 399. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mattie Mungo Roberts; two sons, John Crawford Roberts and Larry Reid Roberts, both of Lancaster; four daughters, Linda Terry, Mary Sue Collins, Barbara Lindsey and Janet Harris, all of Lancaster; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

The family will be at the home of his daughter, Barbara Lindsey, 1883 J.W. Roberts Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

David Moriarty

LANCASTER - Mr. David Michael "Keebler" Moriarty, 16, of 1918 Neill Road died Sunday, July 30, 2000.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mahaffey Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Harold Owens officiating.

A native of Cambridge, Mass., Mr. Moriarty was a son of Karen Moriarty of Lancaster. He was an honor student at Buford High School and a member of Who's Who.

Surviving in addition to his mother, are his brother, John "Josh" Butrick of Lancaster; two sisters, Nicole Lee Cooley of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Cheyanne Marie Cooley of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Geraldine Baker

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Geraldine Sullivan "Nana Geri" Baker, 74, of 903 McDow Drive died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at home.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Forest Hills Cemetery, with the Rev. Calvin Morrow officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Baker was a daughter of the late Dewey Sullivan and Gladys Blackmon Sullivan. She was the widow of Emmett N. Baker Jr. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She worked for Rock Hill School District No. 3, where she worked in the cafeteria at Richmond Drive. She worked for Emmanual Baptist Day Care.

Surviving are her son, Emmett N. "Nat" Baker III of Rock Hill; her daughter, Renee Bigham of Rock Hill; two sisters, Vanna Watkins of Rock Hill and Betty Bowers of San Jose, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel and other times at home.

Alden Blankenship

CANDLER, N.C. - Mr. Alden Barnett Blankenship, 81, of 220 Brooks Cove Road, formerly of York County, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Memorial Mission Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home in Asheville, N.C., with the Rev. Jay Blankenship officiating. Entombment will be at Pisgah View Memorial Park in Candler, N.C., with military graveside rites conducted by Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team.

A native of Yance County, Mr. Blankenship was a son of the late Plato Blankenship and Julia Blankenship. He retired from Duke Power Co. and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Charleen Blankenship; four daughters, Diane Roach of Rock Hill, Loretta Thomas and Debbie Plemmons, both of Candler, N.C., and Beverly Orvosh of Larkspur, Colo.; his brother, Frank Blankenship of Asheville; nine grandchildren; and his great-grandson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

Wilford Carter

ROCK HILL - Mr. Wilford "Jocke" Carter, 80, of 463 Blake St. died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Boyd Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. J. T. Barber officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery.

A native of Pineville, N.C., Mr. Carter was a son of the late Lindsay Carter of Columbia and Azalee Stinson Montgomery of Rock Hill. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and attended the public schools of York County. He was a trustee and a member of the gospel chorus at Boyd Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Alburn C. Carter; two sons, James Carter and Dennis Chisholm, both of Rock Hill; his daughter, Marilyn Chisholm of Jacksonville, N.C.; his sister, Polly Hall of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Parker Funeral Home is in charge.

Joe Ibarra

ROCK HILL - Mr. Joe Daniel Ibarra, 17, of 124 Red River Road died Monday, July 31, 2000.

The funeral Mass will be 8 tonight at The Church of Our Lady and St. Phillip Neri, with Father Juan Carlos officiating. Burial will be at Jardine de San Juan Cemetery in Tepic Nayarit, Mexico.

A native of Ashland, Wash., Mr. Ibarra was a son of Jose Cirio Ibarra of White City, Ore., and Antonia Ibarra Sanches of Tepic Nayarit, Mexico. He worked for J & V Construction of Rock Hill and was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving in addition to his parents are four brothers and sisters.

Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel is in charge.

Margaret Joseph

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Margaret Anne Barber Joseph, 60, of 722 Catherine St. died Monday, July 31, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Rock Grove AME Zion Church, with the Revs. Ralph Washington and Billy Wilson officiating and the Rev. John Brown assisting. The eulogy will be given by the Rev. James T. Barber. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Joseph was a daughter of Ernest Barber and Frances Barber of Rock Hill. She graduated from Emmett Scott High School. She was a member of Rock Grove AME Zion Church, where she served on the usher board, hymn choir and as a member of the Heavenly Gospel Singers.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, J.C. Joseph of Philadelphia; four sons, Raymond Barber, Jerome Joseph, Jerry Joseph and Pernell Joseph, all of Rock Hill; three daughters, Kathy Gilliam, Darlene Heath and Angela Joseph, all of Rock Hill; four brothers, Charles Barber III, Ernest Barber, Willie Ed Barber and James Barber, all of Rock Hill; and her special friend, James Pemberton of Rock Hill; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 today at Robinson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at home.

The body will be taken to church at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Willie Gist

ROCK HILL - Mr. Willie Gist, 79, of 210 Whitgreen St. died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Nazareth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. John McCoy officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of York County, Mr. Gist was a retired landscape worker. He was of the Baptist faith and had attended York County public schools. He was a trustee of Nazareth Baptist Church. He was a member of the AP&B Society and a Mason Lodge member. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Sadie Gist of Rock Hill; his son, Grady Page of Rock Hill; two daughters, Mary G. Barber of Columbia and Sadie Gist Dunlap of Catawba; his brother, John M. Gist Sr. of Rock Hill; his sister, Helen Foster of Rock Hill; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 tonight at Parker Funeral Home and other times at home.

Paul Nelson

ROCK HILL - Mr. Paul Nelson, 75, of 2237 Brent Circle died Monday, July 31, 2000, at home.

The service will be private.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Nelson was a son of the late Glenn and Alberta Wilson Nelson. He was the widower of Mattie Sue McCullogh. He retired from Ingersol Rand Corp. of Knoxville, N.C. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and was of the Mormon faith.

Surviving are his brother, Grover Nelson of Rock Hill; and thee sisters, Mildred Hood of Ridgeway, Christine Alsabrook of Gaston and Reola Bledsod of Daytona Beach, Fla.

Greene Funeral Home-Northwest Chapel is in charge.

Denise B. McGraw

BOILING SPRINGS - Mrs. Anna Brianna McGraw, 32, of 102 Sidney Walker Drive died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Wilkes Skinner officiating.

A native of Lee County, Miss., Mrs. McGraw was a daughter of James Burcham of Corinth, Miss., and Martha Powers of Smyrna. She was a legal secretary for attorney Albert Smith. She was a Girl Scout leader and a volunteer at Boiling Springs Elementary School.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her son, Matthew Kyle McGraw of the home; two daughters, Ashley Nicole McGraw and Hanna Michelle McGraw, both of the home; her brother, Brian Burcham of Rienzi, Miss.; her sister, Angie Rickman of Corinth, Miss.; her stepmother, Nelda Burcham of Corinth; her stepfather, William Powers of Smyrna; her paternal grandmother, Frances Burcham of Corinth; and her maternal step-grandmother, Doris Woodruff of Corinth.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Bertha Buckson

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mrs. Bertha Starks "Sister" Buckson, 98, formerly of Chester, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at D.C. General Hospital.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Red Hill Baptist Church in Leeds, with the Rev. Roosevelt Adams officiating and Pastor Keith Taylor assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Buckson was a daughter of the late Joe Starks and Linda Bowser Starks. The widow of Charlie Buckson Sr., she was the oldest member of Red Hill Baptist Church. She was a retired drycleaning presser and a domestic worker.

Surviving are three sons, Dorsie Buckson, James Buckson and Robert William Buckson, all of Washington; two daughters, Ella Ruth Carter of Chester and Laura Buckson of Amityville, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Ella R. Walker Carter of 218 Jewel St., Chester.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Kings Funeral Home, 135 Cemetery St., Chester. Ruby Carroll

BLACKSBURG - Ms. Ruby Carroll, 79, of 252 Doolittle St. died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney.

A Celebration of Life service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jim Clark and Billy Boone officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of York County, Ms. Carroll was a daughter of the late Jim and Madge Bolin Carroll.

Surviving are her son, William Carroll of Smyrna; two daughters, Thelma Elliott of Blacksburg and Betty Varner of Gaffney; her sister, Lessie Martin of Smyrna; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at White Columns Funeral Service and other times at the home of her daughter, 1513 W. Cherokee St., Blacksburg.
