Nancy Sutton

LANCASTER - Mrs. Nancy Hammond Sutton, 71, of 1571 Bob Ormand Road died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Boone officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kershaw County, Mrs. Sutton was a daughter of the late Lindsey Johnson and Maggie Johnson. She was the widow of Raleigh Hammond. She retired from the Lancaster County school system. She was a cafeteria worker at Barr Street Middle School. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Raffaldt and Maggie Dority, both of Lancaster; six grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Hwy., Lancaster, SC.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Home Care of Lancaster, 800 West Meeting St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Raymond Wright Jr.

SPARTANBURG - Mr. Raymond Winford "Copper Head" Wright Jr., 49, of 224 Sagewood St., formerly of Union and Chester, died Thursday Aug. 31, 2000, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Ken Carter and the Rev. Ray Duncan officiating. Burial will be at Rosemont Cemetery.

A native of Union, Mr. Wright was a son of the late Raymond W. Wright, Sr. and Willie Mae Smith Wright. He was a Baptist and worked for the South Carolina Highway Department in Spartanburg County.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Wright of Chester; his daughter, Susanne W. Henderson of Union; his son, Randall Wright of Jonesville; his sister, Cheryl W. Ledford of Glenn Springs; his brother, Michael T. Wright of Spartanburg; and two grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Cheryl Ledford, 300 Carnation Lane, Glenn Springs.

The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight.

S.R. Holcombe Funeral home is in charge.

Carley Dixon

YORK - Mr. Carley "Tom" Dixon, 86, of 16 Green St. died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at New Home AME Zion Church, with Dr. C.J. Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at New Home Church cemetery.

A native of York, Mr. Dixon was a son of the late Samuel George Dixon and Lessie Annie Williams Dixon. He was a member of New Home AME Zion Church and served as a member of the Trustee Board, Men's Club and was the Sunday school superintendent for more than 20 years.

Mr. Dixon was a World War II veteran and a charter member of White Hill Masonic Lodge No. 462. He was retired from Springs Textiles and Klear Knit Mills.

Surviving are his brother, Samuel Dixon of Washington, D.C., and his niece and caretaker, Doretha Hymes.

Wright Funeral Home is in charge.

James Cheatom

CHESTER - Mr. James Cheatom of 525 Thomas Davis Lane died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Christopher King's Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Otha Smith officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Cheatom was a son of Estelle Adkins Grier of Chester and the late John Willie Cheatom. He attended the public schools of Chester County and was formerly of Orange, N.J., where he worked as a dockman.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Betty Gray Cheatom; his son, Jimmie Cheatom of Orange; his daughter, Julane Mentore of Rock Hill; his brother, John Cheatom of Chester; three grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from

1 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the service Tuesday at Christopher King's Funeral Home, 703 Old York Road. The wake will be 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

George Kelley

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mr. George Clayton Kelley, 87, of 1127 Bessemer City Road died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hos - pital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at McLean Founders Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Schwantes officiating. Burial will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain, N.C.

A native of Newport, Tenn., Mr. Kelley was a son of the late George Stuart Kelley and Willie Beatrice Harned Kelley. He was a member of Bradley Memorial United Meth - odist Church. He was a member of the Shriners and was a lifetime member of Hixon Masonic Lodge in Chattanooga, Tenn. Mr. Kelley was senior vice president of Textiles Incorporated and was group president of the Primary Yarn Group.

Surviving are his wife, Mae Dell Boyd Kelley; three sons, Harold Nathan Kelley of Gastonia, Aubrey Edward Kelley Sr. of Rock Hill and Terry Lee Kelley of Waynesville, N.C.; two daughters, Sherry K. Williams of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Brenda K. Raymond of Gastonia; his sister, Nell K. Miller of Tallahassee, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McLean Funeral Directors and other times at the home of Harold and Susan Kelley, 3107 Love Court.

Jean Mikulak

FORT MILL - Mrs. Martha "Jean" Bayne Mikulak, 78, of 201 Drane Circle died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The graveside service will be

2 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Edgar McCall officiating.

A native of Fort Mill, Mrs. Mikulak was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph Andrew "Mike" Mikulak; her brother, Charles L. Bayne of Fort Mill; and two sisters, JoAnne Bayne Bupp and Shirley Bayne Howard, both of Fort Mill.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Fort Mill Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Heyward Hunter

LANCASTER - Mr. Heyward F. Hunter, 86, of 1956 Springdale Road died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hartley Funeral Home, with the Revs. Joe Moore and Mitch Ingram officiating. Burial will be at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Hunter was a son of the late Burl Hunter and Queenie Adams Hunter. He was the widower of Myrtle Threatt Hunter. Mr. Hunter was retired from Springs Industries and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Glenn Hunter of Lancaster and Gerald Hunter of Orange Park, Fla.; two daughters, Marcene H. Campbell of Lancaster and Linda Cooper of Albany, Ga.; his sister, Nell Plyler of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; 11 great - grandchildren; and three great - great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Marcene Campbell, 1956 Springdale Road, Lancaster.

Mary Stewart

YORK - Mrs. Mary Frances Maloney Stewart of 2755 Sharon Road died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at Sharon United Methodist Church.

A native of York County, Mrs. Stewart was a daughter of the late Charlie Cline Maloney and Nellie White Maloney. She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church. She graduated from Sharon High School and attended Winthrop College and Queens College.

Surviving are her husband, Marion Lacey Stewart; her son, Frank Stewart of Charleston; her brother, Albert Maloney of Sharon; five sisters, Jo Ann Grant and Patty Johnson, both of Sharon, Nell Bradley of Monroe, La., Janet Spencer of Columbia and Libby Merrill of Greenville; and her granddaughter.

The family will receive friends after the service and at other times at the Maloney home on Sherer Road in Sharon.

Memorials may be made to Sharon United Methodist Church, 3001 Shannon St., Sharon SC 20742.

Linda Mullinax

ROCK HILL - Ms. Linda Joyce Mullinax, 51, of 5109 Valleymere Road died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at home.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Jenkins officiating.

A native of Gastonia, N.C., Ms. Mullinax was a daughter of the late Earl Mullinax and Etta Phillips Mullinax. She was an underwriter for Cigna Co. and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are her son, Wayne Jones of Charlotte; her brother, Eugene Mullinax of Fayetteville, N.C.; and two sisters, Marcene Greene of Gastonia and Patricia Hepper of Spokane, Wash.

John Thrift

CHARLOTTE - Mr. John Wayne Thrift, 37, of 1728 Lombardy Circle died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000.

A memorial service will be 5 p.m. Thursday at Stamey - Cherryville Funeral Home in Cherryville, N.C., with the Rev. Herman Simpson officiating. Burial will be private.

A native of Cleveland County, N.C., Mr. Thrift was a son of Bobby Thrift of Shelby, N.C., and Ellen Hamrick Quinn of Rock Hill. He worked as a hair stylist for Norman Russell Salon and Spa. He attended St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Charlotte and served in the U.S. Navy.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his stepmother, Libby Greene Thrift of Shelby; his brother, Jimmy D. Thrift of Charlotte; his sister, Rose Ellen Thrift of Rock Hill; and his stepsister, Marie Ruppe of Forest City, N.C.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Stamey - Cherryville Funeral Home and other times at the home of Bobby and Libby Thrift, 1205 Spring Drive, Shelby, N.C.

Gene Whitworth

GROVER, N.C. - Mr. Gene Calvin Whitworth, 66, of 1104 Long Branch Road died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Memorial Baptist Church, with the Revs. Tim Lowry and Norris Willis officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Cherokee County, Mr. Whitworth was a son of the late E.Z. Whitworth and Julia Wright Whitworth. He was a retired diesel mechanic for Sterling Equipment Co. He was a charter member of Allen Memorial Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the Brotherhood, former chairman of the deacons, a former Sunday school teacher and church historian.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine Wells Whitworth; two sons, Johnny Whitworth of York and Donald Whitworth of Grover, N.C.; his daughter, Cathy Whitworth of Grover; his brother, J.L. "Leroy" Whitworth of Grover; two sisters, Linda Russ of Charlotte and Dian Dickey of Kings Mountain, N.C.; six grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home in Shelby, N.C.

The body will lie in state from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
