Doris Roper

MIAMI - Mrs. Doris Hough Roper, 77, of 3321 S.W. 94th Court, formerly of Kershaw, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Baptist Hospital in Miami.

The funeral will be 11 p.m. Friday at Thorn Hill Baptist Church, with the Revs. John Davis and James Roper officiating. Burial will be at Thorn Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Kershaw, Mrs. Roper was a daughter of the late James Hough and Lillian Beckham Hough. She was a widow of Ezra L. Roper. She retired from General Electric Credit Corp., where she was a bookkeeper for 20 years. She was a member of Thorn Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, the Rev. James Roper of Riverview, Fla.; her daughter, Retha Grillo of Miami; her sister, Mary H. Hair of Chapin; five grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home Kershaw Chapel.

Pius Scerri

FORT MILL - Mr. Pius "Pete" G. Scerri, 71, of 614 Stone Village Drive died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Gemma's Parish in Detroit. Entombment will be at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Mausoleum in Southfield, Mich.

A native of Malta, Mr. Scerri was a son of the late Antonio Scerri and Rosaria Spiteri Scerri. He served in the Royal Malta Artillery (RMA) during World War II. He was a professional soccer player in Malta. He was head soccer coach at Stevenson High School in Livonia, Mich., from 1976 to 1989, winning multiple state championships. He retired from Ford Motor Co. in Detroit. He was an active member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill.

Surviving are two sons, Anthony Scerri of Fort Mill and John Scerri of Dearborn, Mich.; three daughters, Rosalie Scerri of Westland, Mich., Mary Duston of Plymouth, Mich., and Margaret Strafford of Novato, Calif.; six sisters, Mary Hole of San Jose, Calif., Sister Imelda Marie "Salvina" of the Little Sisters of the Poor in France, Sister Pauline Marie "Carmen" of the Little Sisters of the Poor in South Korea, and Polly Scerri, Isabel Scerri and Nina Scerri, all of Rabat, Malta; three brothers, Paul Scerri of Oviedo, Fla., and George Scerri and Victor Scerri, both of Rabat, Malta; and one granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday at Schearder Funeral Home in Plymouth, Mich.

Wolfe Funeral Home, Fort Mill, is in charge of local arrangements.

Dewayne Wilson

SHARON - Mr. Dewayne Wilson, 29, of 4039 Craig Road died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Wallace Thompson Hospital in Union.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon, with the Rev. Raymond Davis officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Lockhart, Mr. Wilson was a son of Donnie Wilson of Chester and Dorothy Robbins Wilson of Sharon. He was a member of Mount Hopewell Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Men for Missions organization. He was a truck driver and a member of Crossroads Fire Department. He was a retired professional baseball player with the Cleveland Indians organization.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Barbara Ann Moorman Wilson; his daughter, Sierra Graham Wilson of the home; his son, Lewis Graham Wilson of the home; his maternal grandmother, Ella Hames Robbins of Sharon; and his paternal grandparents, Frank H. Wilson and Grace Thomas Wilson, both of Union.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the home. The body may be viewed at that time.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Bucky Black

CHESTER - Mr. Warren Ralph "Bucky" Black, 56, of 121 Wilson St., died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Dunlap officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Black was a son of Ralph D. Black. He was a retired supervisor at Springs Industries. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Felecia Black; three sons, Trent Oliver of the home and Chris Black and Scott Black, both of Union; his daughter, Alishia Oliver of the home; his half - brother, Tab Black of Union; his stepbrother, Ronnie Black; his sister, Anita Smith of Buffalo, N.Y.; his stepsister, Sue Black of Union; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel and other times at home.

Memorials may be made to the York County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 4975, CRS, Rock Hill, SC 29731.

Annie Bowen

SHELBY, N.C. - Mrs. Annie Sweezy Bowen, 79, of 950 Hardin Drive died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. David Fambrough officiating.

A native of Cleveland County, N.C., Mrs. Bowen was a daughter of the late Elijah Sweezy and Dollie Gantt Sweezy. She was a retired textile worker. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her brother, Hal Sweezy of Lebanon, Pa.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Clay - Barnette Funeral Home in Shelby.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

Julie Cooper

YORK - Mrs. Julie W. Cooper, 56, of 1080 Meadow Bend Drive died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Terry Corder officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Rutherford County, N.C., Mrs. Cooper was a daughter of the late Ernest J. Wilson and Rachel Nanney Wilson. She was a paralegal with Kennedy, Covington, Lobdell & Hickman in Rock Hill. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her husband, Roland Haselden of the home; three sons, Robert Wesley Cooper of Mooresboro, N.C., and Douglas Creed Cooper and Wayne Anthony Cooper, both of Forest City, N.C.; her stepson, Scott Douglas Haselden of North Carolina; two stepdaughters, Kelly Marie Haselden of York and Tammara Denine Guyton of Union; her sister, Kathy Cash of Myrtle Beach; three grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.

Isaac Eidson

statesville, N.C. - Mr. Isaac Clarence Eidson, 91, of Turnersburg Highway, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Davis Medical Center in Statesville.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Rose Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. H. Cowles Bristol officiating. The burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

A native of Tredell County, N.C., Mr. Eidson was a son of the late Manuel Edward Eidson and Ira Wright Eidson. He was the widower of Hazel Wilson. He was a retired textile plant engineer, and was a member of Rose Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, David E. Eidson of Conover, N.C., and Donald C. Eidson of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Peggy E. Gardner of Rock Hill and Lorraine E. White of Gahanna, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Bunch - Johnson Funeral Home and at othertimes at home.

Dorothy Enlow

BLACKSTOCK - Mrs. Dorothy Roden Enlow, 77, of 2312 Moffitt Creek Road died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Chester Memorial Gardens, with the Revs. Forrest Musselman and Hilton Johnson officiating.

A native of Cherokee, Ala., Mrs. Enlow was a daughter of the late Robert Otis Stallings and Mattie Mae "McGee" Stallings. She was the widow of Albert W. Roden and Lawrence Enlow. She was a homemaker and attended the schools of Cherokee, Ala. She attended Catholic Presbyterian Church and Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Gaston of Blackstock and Betty Dickey of Chester; two sons, James Wesley Roden and Carl E. Roden, both of Chester; her stepson, Harold G. Roden of Doraville, Ga.; her sister, Ruby Jo Haney of Ball Ground, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and six great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Robert Griffin

TAYLORS - Mr. Robert Wayne Griffin, 54, of 612 Lot C. Grace Meadows died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher, N.C.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Wolfe Pond Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Revs. Frank Longshore and Thurman Johnson officiating.

A native of Henderson County, N.C., Mr. Griffin was a son of the late General John Griffin and Frances Jean Starnes Griffin. He was a carpenter and was a member of Wolfe Pond Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Wayne "Bo" Griffin and John William "Jake" Griffin, both of Lancaster; two daughters, Frances Diann Griffin of Pageland and Helen Joane Griffin of Charlotte; his stepdaughter, Mary Sims of Charlotte; four brothers, J.B. Griffin of Ruby and Ray Coble Griffin, Harold Griffin, and Bobby Griffin, all of Pageland; five sisters, Diane Wright of Lancaster, Elizabeth Evans of Pageland, Eunice Manus and Johnnie Manus, both of Marshville, N.C., and Bonnie Wagner of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Thomas Thompson, Box 121, Highway 207, Pageland.

Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel, is in charge.

Evelyn Howard

STATESVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Evelyn Doris Hopkins Howard, 82, of 757 Cool Springs Road died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Davis Medical Center in Statesville, N.C.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Van Wyck Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Barry Lambert and J. Randy McSpadden Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery.

A native of Comer, Ga., Mrs. Howard was a daughter of the late James Vernon Hopkins and Clyde Lou Carrouth Hopkins. She was a homemaker and was a member of Van Wyck Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband, Roy W. Howard of Statesville, N.C.; three sons, Henry R. Howard of Statesville, Everett Howard of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Bryce Howard of Lancaster; two brothers, James Hopkins and Joe Hopkins, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Carlene Rogers and Sarah Frances Doster, both of Fort Mill; nine grandchildren; 18 great - grandchildren; and her great - great - grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home in Fort Mill.

John McBrayer

ROCK HILL - Mr. John Smith "Johnny" McBrayer, 77, of 1270 Pinewood Road died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. T. Mark Verdery officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. McBrayer was a son of the late John T. McBrayer and Juanita Susan Smith McBrayer. He was a widower of Constance Wallace McBrayer. He graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1941. A World War II veteran, he served as a U.S. Army field artilleryman. He was a retired mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service starting in 1948 and retiring in 1980. He was a member of National Association of retired Federal Employees.

He was a member of American Legion Frank Roach Post No. 34, commanding from 1965 to 1966. He was a member of Drum and Bugle Corps. He received the Distinguished American Legion Service Award in 1999, and he was awarded the Outstanding American Legion Legionnaire Award for 1987 - 1988. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church U.S.A. of Rock Hill, where he served as deacon, an assistant Sunday school superintendent and a member of the property and grounds committee.

Surviving are three daughters, Catherine M. Abernathy of Chester, Juanita "Nita" Porter of Rock Hill and Dr. Susan M. Demchak of Jacksonville, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.
