Pius Scerri

FORT MILL - Mr. Pius "Pete" G. Scerri, 71, of 614 Stone Village Drive died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Gemma's Parish in Detroit. Entombment will be at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Mausoleum in Southfield, Mich.

A native of Malta, Mr. Scerri was a son of the late Anthony Scerri and Rosaria Scerri. He was the widower of Bernarda S. Scerri. He served in the Royal Malta Artillery (RMA) during World War II. He was a professional soccer player in Malta. He was head soccer coach at Stevenson High School in Livonia, Mich., from 1976 to 1989, winning multiple state championships. He retired from Ford Motor Co. in Detroit. He was an active member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Fort Mill.

Surviving are two sons, Anthony Scerri of Fort Mill and John Scerri of Dearborn, Mich.; three daughters, Rosalie Scerri of Westland, Mich., Mary Duston of Plymouth, Mich., and Margaret Strafford of Novato, Calif.; six sisters, Mary Hole of San Jose, Calif., Sister Imelda Marie "Salvina" of the Little Sisters of the Poor in France, Sister Pauline Marie "Carmen" of the Little Sisters of the Poor in South Korea, and Polly Scerri, Isabel Scerri and Nina Scerri, all of Rabat, Malta; three brothers, Paul Scerri of Oviedo, Fla., and George Scerri and Victor Scerri, both of Rabat, Malta; and his granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday at Schearder Funeral Home in Plymouth, Mich.

Wolfe Funeral Home in Fort Mill is in charge of local arrangements.

Bobby Thrift

SHELBY, N.C. - Mr. Bobby Lawrence Thrift, 60, of 1205 Spring Drive died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Waco Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Moss officiating. Burial will be at Capernaum Cemetery.

A native of Cleveland, Co., Mr. Thrift was a son of the late Hillard William and Genlle Ross Thrift. He retired from PPG Industries with 25 years service. He was a member of Waco Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary "Libby" Green Thrift; his son, Jimmy Thrift of Charlotte; two daughters, Rose Thrift of Rock Hill and Marie Ruppe of Rutherfordton, N.C.; two brothers, J.T. Thrift of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Roger Dale Thrift of Grover, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice at Wendover, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

The body will lie in state for 30 minutes.

George Biggers

LAKE WYLIE - Mr. George Lee Biggers, 64, of the Oakridge Community died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Wright Funeral Home in York, with the Rev. Keith Hunter Street officiating. Burial will be at Uniondale Cemetery.

Surviving are two sons, George Lee Biggers Jr. and Kyle Biggers, both of Lake Wylie; his daughter, Kim Biggers of Clover.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 8 tonight at Wright Funeral Home in York.

Robert Brozina

ROCK HILL - Mr. Robert Edwin Brozina, 67, of 2081 Hempstead Road died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Dwight Pearson officiating.

A native of Carbondale, Pa., Mr. Brozina was a son of Margaret W. Brozina of Baltimore. and the late Stephen Brozina and Margaret Winter Brozina. He was a retired superintendent of Bamberg Printing and Finishing. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and University of Baltimore. He was a member of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Rock Hill. He was a Marines Korean War veteran.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Blanche Worthy Brozina; two sons, Stephen W. Brozina of Dobson, N.C. and the Rev. Robert H. Brozina of Jackson Springs, N.C.; his daughter, Anne Brozina Tinsley of Rock Hill; his brother, Stephen H. Brozina of Baltimore; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home, 2081 Hempstead Road, Rock Hill, SC.

Emily Carnes

LANCASTER - Mrs. Emily Mae Oliver Carnes, 91, of 224 Potter Road died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, with the Revs. William Graham and Jack Nunn officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Chesterfield County, Mrs. Carnes was a daughter of the late James Thomas Oliver and Martha Sullivan Oliver. She was the widow of Jerles Manley Carnes. She retired from Springs Industries, and was a member of Pleasant Dale Baptist Church.

Surviving are her son, J.C. Carnes of Lancaster; three daughters, Louise Bass and Patricia "Pat" Carnes, both of Lancaster and Bonnie Cauthen of Selma, Ala.; her brother, Perry Oliver of Jefferson; two sisters, Nettie Plyler and Bessie Rollings, both of Jefferson; 11 grandchildren; 10 great - grandchildren; and one great - great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Hwy., Lancaster, SC.

Walter Earp

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Walter Lee Earp, 79, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at home.

A graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memory Gardens.

A native of Union County, Mr. Earp was a son of the late John Earp and Zenora Benton Earp. He was the widower of Mickie Earp. He was a self - employed mechanic. He was a member of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, and was a graduate of Bain Academy. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a member of VFW Post No. 4059 in Mint Hill and the Mint Hill Masonic Lodge No. 742.

Surviving are two daughters, Gayle "Teddy Bear" Earp of Charlotte and Karen E. Forbis of Lake Wylie; his sister, Marie Freeman of Mint Hill; two half brothers, Frank Earp and Bob Earp of Charlotte; and his granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel.

Walter Harrison

SALISBURY, N.C. - Mr. Walter Rayford Harrison, 73, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at home. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Summersett Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Randy Powell officiating. The burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park.

A native of Rowan County, Mr. Harrison was a son of the late John Francis Harrison and Mamie Regan Harrison. He attended Rowan County Schools. He was an Army veteran, where he served in Japan. He worked for Southern Railway. He was a boilermaker construction worker and worked through Boilermakers Local No. 30 in Greensboro, N.C., before retiring in 1989. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and was a former member of Long St., United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Glenna Wooddell Harrison; his son, David W. Harrison of Salisbury, N.C.; two daughters, Kim H. Blackwelder of Rock Hill and Susan R. Harrison of Salisbury; two brothers, John W. Harrison of Bakersfield, Calif. and Fairfax Harrison of Charlotte; two sisters, Frances H. Davis of Salisbury, and Lucille H. Bowers of Springfield, Calif.; and three grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Summersett Funeral Home and at home.

James Hope

FORT MILL - James Alva Hope, 71, of 2270 Sunset Circle died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at home.

A graveside service with Masonic Rites will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte, with the Rev. Ralph Riley officiating.

A native of Charlotte, Mr. Hope was the son of the late William Hope and Grace Hope. He retired from Lance Inc., with 46 years service. He was a supervisor in the vending department. He was a member and past worshipful master of Derita Lodge No. 715 in Charlotte.

Surviving are his son, William Howard Hope of Marietta, Ga.; his daughter, Deborah Tyson of Charlotte; two brothers, Torrence Hope and W.C. Hope, both of Charlotte; four sisters, Dorothy Wood, Ruby Smith, Aline Barefoot and Betty Wood, all of Charlotte; his fiancee, Margaret Knight; three grandchildren; and two great - grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Fort Mill Funeral Home and other times at home.

Miriam Ness

CLERMONT, Fla. - Mrs. Miriam Louise Ness, 76, of 16600 Media Road No. 6 died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000.

A native of Dhamokin, Pa., Mrs. Ness was a retired missionary for the African Inland Mission. She was a member of Minneola Alliance Church in Minneola, Fla.

Surviving are her husband, Carroll C.; two sons, David C. of Austin, Texas and James R. of Kenya, East Africa; two daughters, Ruth Elaine Griffin of Minneola, and Mary Carolyn Ickes of Clermont; her brother, Robert C. Iricks of Pottstown, Pa.; her sister, Betty L. Smethers of Minneola; nine grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.

Lula Tate

CLOVER - Mrs. Lula M. Tate, 78, of 312 Quinn Road died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Clover AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Nichols officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Garden in Filbert.

Mrs. Tate was the daughter of Martha Patterson of Rock Hill. She was a member of Clover AME Zion Church. She retired from Marion Yarns, and was a member of Clover Zion Church Aide Society.

Surviving in addition to her mother are one daughter, Maria Tate Nichols of Clover; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Friday at church.

The body may be viewed from 2 to 8:30 p.m. today.

LANCASTER - Mr. Donald Wayne Taylor, 54, of 1343 Old Woodlawn Ave. died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Great Commission Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Eddie Hinson and Ansel Smith officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kershaw, Mr. Taylor was a son of the late Wade Franklin and Lois Outen Taylor. He was the widower of Brenda Knight Taylor. He was a member of Hart Masonic Lodge No. 380, and worked for Springs Industries. He was a member of the Great Commission Freewill Baptist church.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda K. Taylor of Lancaster; two sons, Bryon W. Taylor and Donald "Brad" Taylor , both of Lancaster; two brothers, Shannon Taylor of Glen Rose, Texas and Mike Taylor of Lancaster; three sisters, Cathy Hinson of Edgemoor, Debra Whitley and Sherry Hensley, both of Lancaster; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Lancaster Chapel and other times at home.

CLOVER - Mr. Robert Dillard Whitener, 92, of 204 Valley Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Ebenezer Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Clover Wesleyan Church, with the Revs. Wayne Spear and W. G. Davidson officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

A native of Cherokee County, N.C., Mr. Whitener was a son of Joseph Henry Whitener and Betty Elizabeth Coleman Whitener. He was a member of Clover Wesleyan Church. He retired from American Thread Co., in Clover.

Surviving are his wife, Clara Davidson Whitener; three sons, James E. Whitener of Gastonia, Robert G. Whitener of Dacula, Ga. and D. Ken Whitener of Salem; his brother, Hobert Whitener of Marble, N.C.; three sisters, Ida Kidd of Murphy, N.C., Mizie Parrish of Lowell, N.C. and Elsie Rose of Hickory, N.C.; three grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.
