William C. Baird
October 29, 2004

William C. Baird, 79, of 318 East 5th Ave, Watauga, TN, formerly of Colony Church Road, Newberry, SC died Friday, October 29, 2004 at the V.A. Medical Center in Johnson City, TN.
Mr. Baird was born on May 5, 1925 in Matney, NC, a son of the late James P. and Nellie Tester Baird. He was a veteran of WW II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, having served in both the US Navy and US Army. He retired as a Staff Sergeant from the US Army after serving a total of 28 years.
Mr. Baird is survived by two daughters, Wanda K. Baird of Whitmire and Luann Freeman of Hawaii; two sisters, Lena Humphrey of Watauga, TN and Ida Williams of Elizabethton, TN; four brothers, Charlie Baird of Johnson City, TN, Ray Baird and Ronda Baird both of Elizabethton, TN, and Manuel Baird of Gulfport, MS; two granddaughters, Frances Hunt Pelletier and Lauren Nicole Freeman; and one great granddaughter, Jessica Pelletier. He was predeceased by his wife, Clara Smith Baird; two sisters, Pearl Holden and Hazel Simpson; and six brothers, Clyde Baird, Leonard Baird, Clarence Baird, Eli Baird, Paul Baird, and Abner Baird.
Graveside funeral services for William C. Baird will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday in Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry, SC.

Doris "Dot" Haltiwanger Hamby
October 21, 2004

Doris Haltiwanger Hamby, 72, of 2305 Mayes Ave., Newberry, widow of Charles L. Hamby, died Thursday, October 21, 2004 at her residence.
Mrs. Hamby was born on January 12, 1932 in Little Mountain, a daughter of the late George L. and Mildred Kinard Haltiwanger. She was retired from Damon International and later retired from Revco. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church and the Adult Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Hamby is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Christie and Dale Eargle and Alice and Danny Turner all of Newberry; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lib Hamm of Sumter and Mackey and Don Satterfield of Hodges; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Betty Haltiwanger, Henry and Daphine Haltiwanger, and Mickey and Mary Haltiwanger, all of Newberry, and Jimmy and Beth Haltiwanger of Silverstreet; six grandchildren and spouses, Carol and Roger Marlow, Luther Eargle, Mikel Eargle, Lizzi Eargle, Charley and Skipper Livingston, and Allison and Michael Stribble; four great-grandchildren, LeAnn Marlow, Marie Marlow, R. J. “Little Man” Marlow, and Will Livingston; and four step-grandchildren, Lee Turner, Carl Tuner, Paul Turner, and Shawn Folk. She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth (Kenny) Haltiwanger.
Funeral services for Doris Haltiwanger will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Faith Lutheran Church by the Rev. Charles Aurand. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence, 2305 Mayes Avenue, Newberry SC 29108.
Memorials may be made to the Faith Lutheran Church, 1505 Wilson Road, Newberry, SC 29108, the Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 352, Newberry, SC 29108, or the Glenn Street Baptist Church, 300 Glenn Street, Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers will be Mikel Eargle, Luther Eargle, Jerry Haltiwanger, Curtis Haltiwanger, David Haltiwanger, and Johnny Stevens. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Palmetto Health Hospice, Dr. Thomas Bradberry, and “B” Hiller.

Katura Abrams Neel
October 21, 2004

Katura Abrams Neel, 89, formerly of 24405 Highway 34, Silverstreet, widow of Richard C. Neel, Jr., died Thursday, October 21, 2004 at White Oak Manor.
Mrs. Neel was born on September 20, 1915, a daughter of the late Claude Edward and Nancy Ellen Paysinger Abrams. She was a homemaker, Assistant Post Master for Silverstreet Post Office, a member of Silverstreet Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the Elsie P. Nichols Circle. She was a member of the Silverstreet Ruritan Club, the Silverstreet FCL, the Silverstreet Leisure Club, and the Silverstreet Alumni Association. She was a former Sunday school teacher.
Mrs. Neel is survived by one daughter and son-in-law; LuEllen N. and Douglas M. Robertson of Bluffton, one son and daughter-in-law; Richard (Dick) C. and Anne B. Neel, III of Silverstreet, two sisters; Claudia Sheppard and Shirley A. Berry, both of Silverstreet, four grandchildren; Pamela Murk of Mt. Pleasant, Nan Loadholdt of Irmo, Clark Neel of Silverstreet, Harold B. Neel of Greer, and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one sister; Sara A. Inabinet and one brother; Cyril Edward Abrams.
Funeral services for Katura Abrams Neel will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. Steve Jackson. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Silverstreet Lutheran Church, PO Box 48, Silverstreet, SC 29145.
Active pallbearers will be Clark Neel, Harold B. Neel, Eddie Abrams, Russell Abrams, Wayne Sheppard, Michael Sheppard, and Bill Hillman.

Mary Geraldine George Burriss
October 20, 2004

Mary Geraldine George Burriss, 61, of 1610 Harrington Street, Newberry, wife of Mitchel K. Burriss, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at her residence.
Mrs. Burriss was born on October 26, 1942, in Greenville, a daughter of the late Ira George, Jr. and Julia Ruby Stephens George. She was of the Pentecostal faith.
Mrs. Burriss is survived by her husband of the home, one son; Mitchel C. Burriss of the home, and one sister; Ira Lee Burke of Taylors.
Funeral services for Mary Geraldine Burriss will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Charlie Clinton. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Greenville.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 6:30 P. M. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Ruth Robinson Crapps
October 16, 2004

Ruth Robinson Crapps, 85, of 3439 Indian Creek Road, Kinards, wife of Earl W. Crapps, died Saturday, October 16, 2004 at her residence.
Mrs. Crapps was born on March 5, 1919 in Jonesville, SC, a daughter of the late Fred M. and Eva Foster Robinson. She was a retired employee from Newberry County Schools.
Mrs. Crapps is survived by her husband of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sharon C. and Vernon Batson of Wilmington, NC, Brenda C. and John Nickerson of Yonges Island, SC, and Mary Ann Sulik of Kinards; five sisters, Kellie Bevis of Union, SC, Josie White of Rock Hill, SC, Dora Holladay, Frances Beck, and Barbara Price all of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Samuel Robinson of Jonesville, SC and Thomas Robinson of Marietta, GA; eleven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Don Wesley Crapps; two brothers Wilson Robinson and David Robinson.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 PM Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Ruth Crapps will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by Mr. Robert Johnson and Mr. Al Goff. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Elizabeth Renwick Baker
November 3, 2004

Elizabeth Renwick Baker, 82, of 1905 Main Street, Newberry, widow of Ralph Parr Baker, M. D., died Wednesday, November 3, 2004.
Mrs. Baker was born in Newberry on June 26, 1922. She was the daughter of the late John Erwin and Frances Caldwell Renwick. Mrs. Baker graduated from Newberry College, summa cum laude in 1943. She was a homemaker and active in numerous organizations in the Newberry community. She was past president of the S.C. Medical Alliance, past president of the Newberry Medical Auxiliary, a charter member and first treasurer of the Newberry Historical Society, past president of the Drayton Rutherford Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, past chaplain of the Jasper chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 24, a member of the Newberry Fine Arts Club, a 40 year Rotary Club spouse, and a member of the Duke University Medical School Davison Club.
Mrs. Baker was an active member of the Newberry ARP Church, having served on numerous committees and was the former president of the Women of the Church. She was a long time secretary for Circle #1, and past teacher of the Elizabeth Shealy Fellowship Sabbath Sunday school class.
Elizabeth was an avid gardener and enthusiastic photographer. She loved history and researching family genealogy.
Mrs. Baker is survived by five children, Elizabeth R. Baker, M. D. of Columbia, Mary E. Baker, M. D. of Mt. Pleasant, Ralph P. Baker, Jr., M. D. and wife, Susan, of Chapin, Erwin R. Baker, D. M. D. and wife, Sally, of Chapin, and Catherine B. Carlson and husband, David, of Newberry; grandchildren, Mary Beth Carlson, Susie Baker, William Baker, Ralph Baker, Rebecca Carlson, Christian Baker, Russell Baker, Virginia Baker, and Thomas Carlson; a sister, Catherine R. Hardwick and husband, Dayton of Bedford, New Hampshire; and first cousin, Frances R. Counts and husband, Ed, of Prosperity.
Funeral services for Elizabeth Renwick Baker will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the Newberry ARP Church by the Rev. Dr. Tim Erskine and Rev. Tony Locke. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the home, 1905 Main Street, Newberry.
Memorials may be made to the Newberry ARP Church Memorial Fund, 1701 Main Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or the Newberry County Memorial Hospital Foundation, PO Box 497, Newberry, SC 29108.

Robert L. "Bob" Bowers
November 1, 2004

Robert L. “Bob” Bowers, 80, of 9437 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity died Monday, November 1, 2004 at Lexington Medical Center.
Mr. Bowers was born December 30, 1923 in Prosperity, the son of the late Brabham E. and Julia Shealy Bowers. He was a graduate of Little Mountain High School, and was a US Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of Wightman United Methodist Church, a former church trustee and was a retired carpenter.
Mr. Bowers is survived his wife, Voris Wright Bowers of the home, two daughters Barbara B. Morris and Martha B. Waller, both of Prosperity; four sisters, Mary Lizzie Boland, Mildred Hentz, and Kathryn Wicker, all of Little Mountain and Betty B. Haltiwanger of Newberry; two grandchildren, Terry A. Morris and Randal S. Abrams, Jr.; three great grandchildren, Michael Morris, Elijah Abrams, and Olivia Abrams.
Funeral services for Robert L. “Bob: Bowers will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Thursday, at Wightman United Methodist Church by Rev. Eddie Taylor. Interment will be in the Newberry Memorial Gardens
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 P. M. Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence, 9437 Macedonia Church Road, Prosperity.
